So, anyone else following this?

Game of the week this coming week is going to be Steubenville vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney in Div. III. Two big time powerhouses.

In Div. I, in this area, gonna be paying attention to Canton McKinley vs. Toledo Whitmer. And of course St. Ignatius vs. St. Edwards.

Any games you're going to be keying on this week?

My alma mater, Boardman, got drilled by Ignatius last week ...... so my specific interest is over.

Yeah, Boardman's my alma mater, too. But it's tough to compete with an Ignatius, and I love me some high school football, so I'll keep paying attention.

Also, the Mooney coach went to school with one of my sisters, so I like to see him do well.

Kirtland Crushed Columbiana 49-8 in a Div V Playoff Game Friday.

They are #2 in the State and #1 seed in the Region.

They play Sugarcreek Garaway this weekend.

I can't stand Mooney. I hope they lose their opener 150 to -2.

I hate the fact that they can pick and choose athletes from all around the area ...... have similar quality as teams like Boardman, but get to compete in these ridiculous lower divisions.

It's not like they could compete in division 1 over time. Mooney might have have 50-60 players on the team. Some of those Cincy schools have 80-90. All boys schools like St X, and Moeller, have over 1500 boys to choose from. Mooney probably could play in division 2, but that's the highest level they could play at.

Mooney recruits from the entire Youngstown area.

They play against Division 1 schools throughout the year. They win their fair share as well. They are like an All Star team.

However, because their overall enrollment is far lower than Boardman, and other local schools, they get to beat up on the weaker schools in the playoffs year after year after year.

Further, Boardman has something like 65 kids on their football roster. Fitch is something like 70. They're both Division 1. Girard has mid 60s. They're division 4.

Mooney has 68 on their football roster. They're division 3.

What's the difference? Mooney has recruited many of their players. It's absolutely ridiculous.

Overall enrollment is a joke for determining Division eligibility. If you want to put limits on rosters as part of lower division qualification, then that would be one thing .... but this overall school enrollment is, and has always been a joke where parochial schools and athletics are concerned.

Kirtland Romps....on to Columbia Crestview tonight

GREEN — The Division V regional semifinal between top-seeded Kirtland and Sugarcreek Garaway kicked off at 7:30 p.m.

By 7:45 p.m., the Pirates and their fans wished they were anywhere in the world but at Green's Infocision Stadium.

The teams both play in Region 17, but it didn't take the undefeated Hornets long to prove the programs are on different levels. Kirtland erupted for 35 points in the first quarter en route to a 52-7 win over an overmatched Garaway team.

Thanks for coming, drive home safely.

"You can't ask for a better start than that," Kirtland coach Tiger LaVerde said. "We knew they were going to come out five-wide and be ready to play. But we prepared and got some huge plays early, and it was all fun after that."

Kirtland advances to a regional title game for the third time in four years. The Hornets will play Columbiana Crestview at a site to be determined.

Garaway (9-3) won the toss on Friday and elected to receive. A three-and-out was not how the Pirates wanted to start, and it was the beginning of the end.

The first time Kirtland touched the ball, the Hornets plowed 70 yards in nine plays with Christian Hauber starting the festivities with a 3-yard TD run. On Garaway's next possession, Ryan Loncar blocked a punt and returned it 5 yards for a touchdown. The next time the Pirates ran a play, Zach Santo returned an interception 21 yards for a score. Following another three-and-out for Garaway, Damon Washington did his best Marcus Allen imitation, reversing fields on a handoff to the right and electrifying the crowd with a 46-yard TD run.

All of that occurred in the first 6 minutes, 44 seconds. Before the Pirates faithful could get comfortable in their seats, the Hornets were comfortably on their way to Week 13.

Kirtland 28, Garaway 0 with 5:16 left in the opening quarter? Good night, and good luck in the next round Hornets.

"We came out with great intensity," Santo said. "Ryan made a big play, the secondary made a big play. We were excited."

Hauber added another 2-yard TD run late in the first quarter to push the advantage to 35-0 after 12 minutes of play. Washington added an 8-yard TD run late in the second quarter to give his team an insurmountable 42-point edge at the half.

It was not the kind of start to a game Garaway coach Jason Wallick was looking for.

"Things snowballed on us early and we certainly didn't need that," Wallick said.

The second half was a formality for Kirtland and a chance to get some young players in off the bench. Before the starters got an early end to the evening, Washington took a short pass from QB Scott Eilerman and made another highlight reel play on his jaunt to the end zone in the third quarter.

Jared Lyon, who was booming kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks, added a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Hornets.

"There's always room for improvement," Loncar said. "We can still get better on offense and defense."

After the first 12 minutes on Friday night, you might have a hard time convincing Garaway that is possible.

Crestview could score, they will give up some points. You guys are lucky Ursuline didn't get in. Outside of Coldwater, you guys probably should win D 5.

One step at a time.... we have to get to Coldwater first....and to do that we have to beat Crestview.....

I feel about Ursuline like the others feel about Mooney....I don't think it is right they compete based on the size of their schools when they get to pick and choose the makeup of their demographic....

If they were a public school and dominated as they do...I wouldn't have an issue...It would SUCK...lol...but I wouldn't have an issue.....but they recriut....and that is a serious unfair advantage.

Moeller and St. X tied at 21 in the 4th.

Monty Madaris is a badass, Moeller was down 21-7 at the half. He's brought back them back almost by himself.

My brother-in-law works at Green HS. He does the official score book for some football games, and he got to see when Kirtland played at Green in the playoffs. He said they were a really impressive team. Obviously so!

The finals are set:

Div. 1: St. Ignatius vs. Pickerington Central
Div. 2: Avon vs. Trotwood-Madison
Div. 3: Cardinal Mooney vs. Shawnee
Div. 4: Kenton vs. Norwayne
Div. 5: Coldwater vs. Kirtland
Div. 6: Marion Local vs. Buckeye Central (apparently Western Reserve missed a go-ahead FG with 30 seconds left).

*Edit* I'm going to the D-I game, but I'm seriously considering skipping out of work on Friday and going to see the Coldwater vs. Kirtland game (at 11:00 at Massillon Paul Brown).

That Whitmer/Iggy game was atrocious. There must have been 10 turnovers. Ignatious took advantage and Whitmer didn't. That was the ballgame.

They have a tough game ahead in Coldwater....Coldwater has been denied by Ursuline the last couple of years...(last year the most recent) so I am sure they beleive just a as strongly that this is their year.

I'm just hoping to see some good games. Last year's Huber Hts. vs. Lakewood St. Eds was a great one, and the previous year's Glenville vs. Davidson was classic as well.

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be hitting the Coldwater vs. Kirtland game, the Mooney game, and the D-I game as well.

I don't doubt it but Iggy's D shut down Ed's and Whitmer who both had superior talent so we'll see. My money is on a close game in the teens...could go either way

I'll be rooting for my alma mater Wildcats. At least one of my Cleveland teams has a shot at the championship.

Well, I had plans to go see the Kirtland/Coldwater game tomorrow (even scheduled off work), but my son's come down with a bug, so he can't go to daycare. So, I'm staying home with him in the a.m. so my wife can go into work for a bit.

But, I'm still going to the Mooney game at 3 and the Ignatius game Sat. night. And I'll definitely have the games on TV.
