I got to thinking today.........
Chad Ocho-cinco's career is just about over. He is playing in NE, and his production is definitely way down from his years as a top-flight wr in The League. He in on the decline and within the next year, or two, or maybe three; he will be out of the league.
His departure will follow the likes of Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and even Joe Horn....and it strikes me that when Chad leaves, it will be the end of a certain era in NFL football.
Like it or not, these diva's, with their huge personalities and choreographed end-zone antics have left their mark on the game. They have even transcended the game to leave their mark on popular culture, with TO and Chad having television series allowing those who are interested, access into their lives....
While their were diva's before---this past decade saw these wide-outs set a new precedence in diva-hood.
And while some may say that there are certainly still some up-and-coming diva's to take the place of these aging vets; I think that the book is rapidly closing on an era where these exceptional athletes really pushed the boundaries of what it meant to be an NFL player.......
Thoughts.........................................

Old school NFL guy here ... count me as one who thinks you should flip the ball to the ref when you score, and trot off the field. I liked it when players let their playing ability speak for itself, and when the game was the spectacle, not the "notice-me" antics of players.

I saw so much of that "old school" yesterday while watching college ball, it was refreshing.

I agree to an extent, Tyler. I always liked TO, Randy, and Chad Johnson. Joe Horn was lame as hell, but those other three guys had fun and showed some creativity.
There will never be a better TD celebration than the sharpie. It was perfect. And now, it's illegal.
The guy scored a touchdown while there was a sharpie in his sock, for crying out loud.
The good news is that it's not the end of dynamic wideouts by any means. Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, Desean Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, and Dez Bryant should continue to amaze us with their athleticism for year.

The Sharpie celebration was the worst one. Pre-planned celebrations are well extremely lame. Give me a spontaneous celebration any day over this pre-planned celebrations with extraneous props.

the sharpie was a little bit funny at least. planting a cell phone in the FG post was corny and stupid (Joe Horn from his 4 TD game)

jc.. If your pre-planning your TD celebrations, then your not putting your full focus on the team or the game itself, and showing what a self-center arrogant PoS you really are. And it really annoys me when a guy makes a tackle, not a sack or a TD save, just a tackle, then does the chest puff and "pants full of crap" walk. And usually doing it toward the opponents side of the field to boot. Just get back on your side, get the play and get ready, your paid to make tackles, not every one of them is special. /chest puff ::: "I just finished my post..Oh yeah, I'm great, look at me."
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Maybe I just don't understand what is so funny about pulling a sharpie out of your sock and autographing the ball after you score, but if I want a laugh, I'll go watch a good comedy.

he gave the ball to one of Shawn Springs close friends in the crowd who apparently was talking smack in the week leading up to the game. that was the funny part.

You mean like last week when Usama Young pushed the Texans RB out of bounds after about a 12 yard game then got in his face and started shoving him and talking crap... the very next play the very same running back came upon Young in the secondary and ran past him like he wasn't even there for the TD?
Yea, I know what you mean.

I like our boy Rubin. After a sack he gets up and walks back to the defense.

I grew up watching Jim Brown either hand the ball to the ref or drop it in the endzone after a TD run.... and I venerate those old-school guys who said: "act like you've been there before."
Still.... I realize that it's a different time now- and I'm open-minded enough to recognize that a TD celebration is something to enjoy as well.... so long as it's creative and humorous.... and that's where the "personal taste" caveat comes in.
TO's Sharpie? It gets a pass from me, because it was so new at the time. Joe Horn's "cell- ebration?" Contrived.... and over -the-top. Fail. Chad's "one knee proposal to the cheerleader, who jumped into his arms?" Laughed my arse off.
Like all things, these trends follow a trypical trajectory: they hit big initially, then escalate to realms of the absurd. After that, they trail off.... only to be resurrected later with something "completely new."
For my money, celebrations were never that big of a deal. I loved watching The Fun Bunch back in the early 80's, because it was a squad effort... and was devised from a spirit of comeraderie that was one-of-a-kind back then. The individual celebrations? Not so much.
So I guess I'm split. If it's truly creative and makes me laugh, OK. If you try too hard, and it looks stupid (to me), then it's "thumbs down."
I guess I'll have to grade them on a (purely subjective) case-by-case basis.
Still.... there's nothing quite as stylish as making a highlight-reel type play.... and acting as if it was nothing at all:
"I just 'wowed your azz' with my feats of prowess.... suck on the memory of THAT- instead of watching moves that I haven't practiced since the 8th grade Homecoming dance..."
TylerD: it may seem like the end of an era, but it's only because the Big-Named front-runners are nearing their exit moments. Others will try to "one-up" their initial efforts... until we get to the point that "endzone celebrations" become passe. Dance routines will hibernate for awhile, then come back with a vengeance. all things in life are cyclical... that's for sure.
For my money, I won't miss them.... but if some kid who's only 13 years old in 2011 decides to "bust loose in the year 2020, I won't flip out, and go all "Grumpy Old Man" on him.
After all.... I'll have seen it all before.

As long as Drew Rosenhouse ( I don't know how it's spelled) is an agent, there will still be Diva's or percieved Diva's.
2. If you want to talk Chad Ocho Cincho's career, Check out everything before and after he put on a tan sports Jacket, ( ala, hall of fame induction attire), for one of his end-zone celebrations.
I personally chalk it up to a bad vibe slight at the hall of fame and coincidentally everything about his play since that day has been subpar to before that day. Way to go Chad! Way to hang a cloud over your own career, I guess it is just a coincidence, but OOPS!

What does Drew Rosenhaus have to do with how others' behave?
The guy's only power in that regard is in terms of holdouts, which his biggest 'diva' client ever, T.O., never did.

I watch football to be entertained.
If a endzone celebration is funny, it is good for the game.

Clem, I agree with all that. The one thing I would add is that touchdown celebrations get a lot more latitude in my book than do other play celebrations.
Sack dances, big hit on a 2 yard run muscle flex, signaling first down after catching an 8 yard slant route... those I can do without. If you make a stop on a big 4th and 1, by all means have 30 seconds of spontaneous jumping around and slapping your guys on the helmet for a job well done.. then get off the field.
To paraphrase something coach Roy Williams of UNC says, "It's a scoreboard, it's not a yards board or a catches board or a tackles board, it's a scoreboard.. and in the end the only thing that matters is scoring more points." So with that in mind, scoring points is really the only thing that deserves a serious, even orchestrated celebration.
Edit this in.. you know what would really crack me up? If Phil Dawson had a special 50+ yard FG dance. I think that would be hilarious.

Could you imagine if people did this kinda stuff in real life?
Could you imagine a cop pulling you over and jumping out of his car doing the Matthews "flex"?
How about a kid in class being the first to finish his final exam doing the smack down on his fellow student as he goes to hand in his test? lol

Dude... you and I should watch a game together sometime.... we'd certainly see it from the same POV. TD's only- that's the way to go. Quote:

Just the very thought of Phil doing something like that's enough to have me chuckling right now. WTH would he come up with?

I think one of my all-time favorites has to be T.O. doing Ray Lewis' dance after breezing past him into the endzone.
