I know this is soon, and please feel free to move the thread Refs if this belongs in Tailgate.
After watching the Jacksonville game today, I figured it might be time to talk about who everyone thinks may be gone at the end of the season and who may fill their roles.
I'm pretty sure the definites for getting fired, at least so far, will be:
Del Rio Sparano Spagnuolo
Some people I think are definitely on the hot seat:
Whiz Dare I say Shanahan? Reid Turner
People whose seats are getting warm:
Carroll - not sure why he was hired. Team has regressed badly in a division that stinks Frazier - how is this team still so awful?
That's about as far as I can think off the top of my head. Now where I really fall short is thinking of potential head coaches waiting in the wings. So far, I've thought of:
Mike Zimmer Jeff Fisher Morninwheg VanGorder Fewell
What are your thoughts? Personally, I'd love for Zimmer to leave Cincinnati. He has worked miracles with that defense. Their defense from Bresnahan to him has been night and day.

I don't think he is a definite at all. His seat is definitely warm, but I still think he will get another year.

I'd say their GM's (the guy who traded for Kolb) seat is hotter than Whisenhunt.

His team finished 7-9 in a crappy division last year and they are currently 4-6. Not too much regression. Not only that but he's got a huge contract.

Pete Carroll won the division and a playoff game (vs. the Saints in NO) his first year.
Sure, he went 8-10 (including playoffs), but the end result is the end result. I doubt there is any way he gets fired.

I don't think anyone would take a chance on Jauron. He has been a head coach twice and has a winning record only once.

Currently, Jauron is in charge of the NFL's #1 pass defense, which surrenders just 166.5 ypg. Yes, you read that correctly.

I gotta say I was a bit surprised by that stat.
#29 against the run #1 against the pass #5 overall D.
That pretty much tells you where our problems are.....
Here's a hint, not our D
As to the thread discussion, no way Whiz is gone, or Carroll. They both get another year. The Miami coach is on the seat, but there is a lot of talk down here about giving him another year with a good QB....(sound familiar?)

I would take that ranking with a VERY healthy dose of salt for a couple of reasons:
1. With the exception of a couple games, we've played the sewer level teams of the NFL thus far.
2. Nobody has HAD to pass on us; most teams have been content running it down our throats and burning the clock. When good offenses have decided that they want to move the ball on us, they've done so nearly at will (49ers early & late, Houston).
IF our offense continues to show improvement and move the ball and score like we did yesterday AND we maintain that ranking at the end of the season, then I'll consider it validated.
It'd be nice to see it validated, but I firmly believe that it's a Fool's Gold ranking. No doubt that we have some good players and our pass defense is better than most... but I'm not even close to being ready to agree with it being the best in the NFL.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

http://www.nfl.com/stats/team
We've also played 4 backup QB this year, plus Blaine Gabbert in 10 games.
In most games we are down 2 or more scores, and teams go into "prevent offense" mode against us. They start running the ball, do so effectively, and don't have to pass at all.
Our "#1 pass defense" faces far fewer pass attempts than any other defense in the NFL.
We have 6 INT, which is close to the bottom in the NFL. Teams only throw the ball 28 times/game on average against us. No one is ever in catch up mode against us. No one goes hurry up to try and win a game.
Remember earlier in the year when people went nuts over the fact that we led the league in sacks at the time? Well, now we're 21st in the league.
We are 7th right now in scoring defense, and that's the most impressive stat as far as I'm concerned. However, we have played a lot of crappy teams, with crappy QB play.
We'll see where we are at the end of the season, when we have played through our divisional schedule. I think that the defense shows glimmers of promise ...... but yesterday, as an example, was a case of the Jacksonville receiver dropping a TD that hit him in the hands, as opposed to any great play on the part of our defense. Jacksonville scores like 12 points per game coming into yesterday's game. Holding them to 10 is hardly a grand and glorious accomplishment, especially when we came that close to giving up 17, and losing.

Do you plan on telling the rest of the story?
Only the Colts have allowed more rushing attempts than the Browns.
Here's a list of the QB's we've played over this stretch:
Andy Dalton Curtis Painter Chad Henne Matt Hasselbeck Charlie Whitehurst Kyle Boller Alex Smith Matt Schaub Sam Bradford Blaine Gabbert
Yeah buddy.....that's a murderers row right there.
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves when talking about Jauron's #1 rated pass defense.
Teams don't have to throw to beat us, so they haven't. It's a phantom stat that doesn't mean much of anything.
Having said that, I've also praised Jauron for doing what I consider to be a great job with a cast of iffy characters.

thanks YTown and Toad for posting most of what i was going to in response to that.
If you can't stop the run, and play from behind, your opponents aren't going to pass on you much. Also, the clock is going to run faster, so there will be fewer plays from scrimmage. We are 4th-best in covering YPA and 7th in opponents' passer rating, so that does add some legitimacy to the ranking... but how many of you feel we can cover a pass-catching TE? How comfortable are you that Sheldon Brown won't fall down on a deep ball? Who feels good about Haden tracking down deep balls to Wallace or T. Smith?
I am definitely happy with what Jauron has been able to do with the defense, which is what I think was the point of the OP, but I don't think we're a top-5 defense (HOU, CHI, SF, BAL, PIT) in the league. We do seem to be in that 6-10 (CIN, ATL, TEN) range right now though.
While the QBs we've played have had almost everything to do with our success against the pass (Matt Hasselbeck is clearly the best QB we've faced this year,) some allowances should probably be given for facing the following RBs as well:
Benson Johnson McFadden/Bush Gore Foster/Tate Jackson MJD Even Reggie Bush has been a big producer the past couple weeks.
Our offense is definitely our teams' weak link, but our defense is not beyond reproach.

I feel good about Haden. I don't know about the guys backing him up in the cover-2 though.......
Good points though, and I agree with all of it.

To tell you the truth, I'm a heck of a lot more interested in talking about who might be available as our new OC next season. Pick the right guy, fill some holes and who knows

I'd honestly have to imagine it would be some young, up and coming position coach whose next step would be as an OC who doesn't call plays before he would get a gig as an OC who did call plays.

And other teams have played a Browns offense that has a starting RB that wasn't on the team a month ago and his backup that wasn't on the team 2 weeks ago. A WR that was released, a rookie HC that has had play-calling issues, a decimated OL with two rookies (Lauvao is one for all true purposes) and putting nothing at RT would be almost as effective as the rejects we've put out there.
Would you be saying that our opponents stats are improved by this fact? Whatever you want to say, but this is the NFL. I wouldn't exactly say that SF and Houston and Oakland are nobodies! Even Cincy can't be considered a 'nobody' right now. Miami has been a scoring a ton of points recently.

Actually, two teams face fewer attempts than us, KC and SD, but only 5 teams have a lower completion percentage against than the Browns.
The Steelers have 4 picks with 6 more passes against them per game!
There are only two teams with fewer TDs allowed, BallsNoMore and the Jets.

And we've faced some rather nice QBs too. Matt Schaub, Alex Smith, Sam Bradford (yeah, I know, he's been out most of the season), Schaub was 14-23 for 119 yds and no TDs against us. Alex Smith was 15-24 for 177 and 1 TD. Sam Bradford was 15-25 for 155 and 1 TD.
As for the running game, we've been run on alot and the longest run we've allowed is a 39yd TD and we've allowed only 7 rushing TDs.

Why dont they just promote the QB coach.. and then find a new QB coach? An OC position without playcalling ability just isn't attractive IMO to someone who is established.

I pretty much agree, although I'd bump Norville up to that top level, he's gone unless they go on some ridiculous run. The guy is simply not an NFL HC.
Somehow I think Reid stays, but right now I agree the pressure is on more than ever.
Sparano has turned the Fins around. They still only have a few wins, but they have been killing their opponents. It's like a brand new football team. The defense has really stepped up. Matt Moore is doing what he does. Stepping in right away, doing well, and soon the league will adjust to him just like they did in Carolina, and he'll go back to backup status.
I honestly think that team is one competent QB away from being very good.

If ever there was a stat that LIES. Since most every teams has run at will and controls the game vs the browns vaunted defense, we are passed on much less because of the success of a ball control running. we are NOT adept covering the pass yet so easy to run against and burn the clock why run? testimony to how we do vs the pass is any time we do happen to seize a momentary lead and a team decides the pass, our crappy safeties, downtown Sheldon brown, our slow lbers and lack of pass rush really puts the fear of God in opposing QBs. Junk stats. watch the game: we are so soft vs the run teams don't have to pass yet when they do it is very easy.

I wanna take you to the woodshed with this latest post, AkJoe, but I just can't.
(You heard it here first, folks,,, Joe and I agree on something!)
This stat is why folks say, "stats are for losers." ...and there's no better example than the 2011 Browns.
We have some good things in development... but "the eyeball test" is more than enough to tell us that:
1. We're (still) porous against the run, which means that teams don't have to pass to defeat us. 2. We're suspect against the pass when teams HAVE to throw against us,
We don't get regular pressure on the opposing QB. We leave short-medium passess open all day. We have ONE corner who can shut down his side of the feild. The rest? "iffy," at best.
Outside of that, we have a D that has been the happy recipient of some less- than stellar opposing QB's, some lucky breaks, and a schedule which has featured some pretty paltry offensive 'juggernauts,' if you ask me.
I reserve the rigt o amend this opinion when we shut down a legitimate offensive threat. Until then, honest posters MUST admit that Joe has a point.
just sayin'....

no doubt.
however, we are much better on defense than I thought we had any right to be coming off a year where we were bottom 1/3 in defense and then switched from a 3-4 to a 4-3. and we are better against the pass than the run.
we definitely need another starting DE (and some better depth on DL), another LB (or 2), a FS, and another starting CB. Still, less holes than the offense and Jauron has done a decent job this year with what he was given.

Well Wait a moment here.. the stats say we are what we are right?
It's not like QB stats. when a QB has only 100 yards passing in a game,, you can look at several things like, how many passes were dropped, how many sacks did he take, how many hurries.. these are things that would cause you to think twice about stats.
But this is a bit different. We allowed x number of yards per game..
I suggest that's going to change in the next 6 weeks because we have Pitt and Balt twice each.. so that number is, I'm sure, going to changs a bunch.
But today, it is what it is..

I will agree with Clem and AJoe as well. Is this looseness on defense a personnel weakness? Or is it scheme? I think some of each. Even some of our starters don't match up well, and the later strings can't match up well or are playing out of place (TE in backfield). Some must be scheme because game after game the defensive corners and flats are torched. When we hold, it has often been the result of the zebras (refs), they dropped a pass, threw it poorly, and such. If it gets that group off the field, I am for it. But it seldom is because of a sack or pressure, seldom a defensive play on the ball (anyone else concerned about the number of drops of potential picks?), or fine tackling. But it is working hard and getting somewhere, though it may be better or worse, wait to see if it passes the sniff test.

as with all stats, not really though. to have a truly good metric we would have to do a bunch of different things. including factoring in for opponent strength, injuries, etc.
yards/game is also a bad metric because some teams like the packers gamble a ton expecting to get turnovers to make up for the big plays (yards) that they do give up.
if you look at points/game, we are quite similar with the Packers despite that they are giving up a ton more yards/game.

Well Wait a moment here.. the stats say we are what we are right?
I've used this example on here before when talking about stats to show how they don't tell the whole story: Jerome Bettis once had 4 carries for 6 yards in a particular game. You see those stats and think he didn't help his team much that day. But upon further review three of those carries were 1 yard touchdown runs. He scored 3 TDs on 4 carries.
Point? Stats can be very deceiving.
If no one passes the ball on you because they are playing with a big lead and run the ball to eat the clock then it's going to look like you're #1 against the pass. When in reality being #1 against the pass in this case is both deceiving and worthless.
It's not an indicator of how good we actually are against the pass. Other stats point out that there's been a minimum number of passes being thrown against us.
A wide receiver who'd never been thrown the ball has no drops.
MoMass has a passing completion percentage of 100% and throws a TD every time he throws a pass. Another stat shows he's thrown 1 pass. (Remember his TD pass to Robiskie?)
Silly examples yes. But examples of the same sort that has us #1 against the pass.
"Against Indianapolis, the Browns faced an immobile Kerry Collins – which led to a season-high sack fest. Miami produced a still healthy Chad Henne, who has become famous for fourth-quarter meltdowns. Seattle offered Charlie Whitehurst – which speaks for itself and Jacksonville’s Blaine Gabbert alternated laser strikes with balls thrown in the dirt."
"So far this season, the Browns have not played against an elite quarterback and have only faced mid-tier talent in Houston’s Matt Schaub and San Francisco’s Alex Smith.
Perhaps this might explain the Browns’ top-ranked pass defense and seventh-ranked overall defense."

General comment: We have faced: Andy Dalton in his 1st start, and Bruce Gradkowski Kerry Collins on his last ..... well, his legs are gone, so last hip? Chad Henne Matt Hasselbeck Jason Campbell/Kyle Boller Charlie Whitehurst Alex Smith (who only threw 24 passes) Matt Shaub (who only threw 23 passes) Sam Bradford Blaine Gabbert I would say, that of that group, we have one star QB.(Shaub) 3 servicable starters, (Smith, Hasselbeck, and Campbell) 1 up and comer, (Dalton) 1 big question mark who has had trouble this year (Bradford) and a whole lotta scrubs. We lost to Bruce Gradkowski ... and Charlie Whitehurst ..... and Blaine Gabbert .... and beat Chad Henne ... and Kerry Collins. Lump that group together and I might give them a grade of Scrub - - -. Add in that many of our games have been games where we have been down 2 or more scores, and no one fears our offense ... and no one takes chances. They run the ball, complete safe stuff, punt when necessary, play field position, win field position, and win the games. I think that our defense has potential, but it needs more parts. It is not a top defense, no matter what the numbers might try to say. It's like the BCS argument ...... "Who have we played?".
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

All this is true, but, three of the top defenses in the league are who? Pittsburgh, Baltimore , and Cincy right? Well who the hell did they play? So while stats are deceiving, other teams are being propped up in the same way. They have pretty much played the same crappy schedule we have, and Cincy only beat us because of a fluke play.
All these bad teams we've played, all have been touted as some of the best defenses in the league, many as tops at certain things. But still the Browns ratings are the only ones that are faux.........GMAFB.
Rankings are what they are, like them or not. I get sick of all the crap thrown at this team from it's own fans. They have a high ranking, can't we enjoy that fact without the constant, waah waah, I can see we suck crap all the time.?
My favorite is the bellyachers that claim Ryan's defense was so good. That loudmouth had more experienced players, and one familiar with his scheme and they couldn't stop anybody. OVERRATED to the max. Our defense last year was no better than what you see now. We just had a big mouth as a coach that people liked. They said he did more with less. I say, less than what they have this year? Bullcrap.

agree and disagree.
On your point about Ryan's D, you'll get no backtalk from me.
On your point about stats and "feelgoods," I see it differently. No matter what the stats say, I have to ask myself, "do I feel confident in this squad pitching an afternoon of 3 & outs?" Do they dominate a game? Can they force a momentum change every week?
I think you know the answer. They're not a bad D... they seem to do just enough to keep us in the games (which is fine with me for now), but aren't exactly the Great Wall of China.
And pointing out weaknesses isn't necessarily badmouthing the team, you know- matter of fact, if you re-read some of these posts, they're actually pretty complimentary to Jauron for getting this much production so early. I'm in that camp, as well... and think that it bodes well for this team down the road.
As much as it seems to bother you, these posts seem fairly balanced to me.... and have the ring of truth to them. It's actually possible to feel good about what we have and still be hopeful about potential improvements. That ain't badmouthing, imho... it's seeing things the way they are.

Excuse me here, but the subject was the Browns defense. So I didn't mention, nor did I think I had to, that the inaccuracy of any rating by the exclusive use of NFL stats obviously applies to every team.

Yes, and I'll bet Arron Rogers and the Packers are feeling very, very fortunate that they don't have to face the Browns since we are ranked #1 against the pass.
How about you give me that break you're asking for.
Look, I'm never one to bag on my own team. I love everyone on the roster as though they were my best friends. Even though we're losing. I look for the positives, progress and realistic reasons behind our lack of success as much as anyone and more than most. I don't throw players or coaches under the bus, (other than the Mangini/DaBoll act of last season).
But facts is facts. The Browns do not have the 5th best defense in the NFL.
Yes, according to NFL.com we are ranked 5th in overall defense and 1st in passing. What it doesn't say is we have played a lot of bad teams so far. We don't have to be all that great to rank good vs the competition. So maybe it should say, as a qualifier, is that vs Very Bad Teams the Browns are the 5th ranked defense. Because that would be closer to the truth.
Where would we be ranked if we were playing the average or the Very Good Teams who cannot be discounted when you're talking about "overall" rankings.
Football Outsiders.com has us ranked 19th overall, 13 against the pass and 30th against the run. That is more accurate to who we really are as a defense*. Rats at #1, Steelers #11 and bengals #16
*The Houston game in which we gave up two one-hundred yard rushers skews our run defense a lot so maybe we're a bit better than 30th considering that game as not typical.
Our whole division is ranked high in overall defense by NFL.com primarily because we've all played the majority of the same opponents which everyone would agree has been a pretty weak schedule this year.
This is the classic example of the definition of "stats are for losers". A loser will point to meaningless, though accurate, stats as something positive to hang onto to feel good about their team. Winners never do that. They just point to the scoreboard.

Only by NFL.com who compiles rankings using only total yards in each category. That is a faulty method that does not take into account the strength of schedule or anything else related to the reality of the games.
As I'd posted above, FootballOutsiders.com takes everything into account and they have Baltimore ranked #1, the Steelers at #11 and the bengals at #16.
Their top 5 ranked defenses are:
Baltimore (pass1-rush4) Jets (pass2-rush6) 49ers (pass7-rush1) Detroit (pass3-rush16) Jacksonville (pass6-rush5) Which just might be an indicator to the improvement of our offense. Either that or they came out flat and non-typical
And when you stop to think about it don't those rankings make a lot more sense than us being at #5 and the bengals in the top 3?
While I'm at it and we're coming up on the bengals game a comparison of their rankings:
Defense:
bengals (pass19-rush12) Browns (pass13-rush30)
Offense:
bengals #13 (pass11-rush13) Browns #25 (pass23-rush31)

I can easily see all those you listed as "fired" getting the axe. I think those are givens. Reid? Might be a different story. It's his first real bad season in a while, but so much has gone against him.
I'll tell you what. Some may hotly disagree, but I'd trade Shurmur for Reid in a heartbeat. Eventually, even the best coaches see their message and manner of delivery get stale. Fresh starts for those guys can be great things. I do think Shurmur has a future, but Reid has a very proven track record. Of course it'll never happen, but I'm just sayin'...
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
