My Uncle, who served in WWII, and was a POW, is in critical condition/Hospice in one of the VA hospitals in Cleveland. His condition is such that he is not expected to recover. His body is basically just shutting down, one system at a time. If you would, please pray that his passing is peaceful and without pain or fear.

Thank you.

Thanks everyone.

He's still hanging in there somehow. They said that he probably wouldn't survive the night about a week ago. He doesn't want anything except for pain ...... and has said that he's ready to go ...... but evidently he's still fighting somewhere deep inside. I think that he wants to give up, but doesn't know how to do so.

Just to further update ..... my uncle is still somehow hanging in there.

He has had his 4th "last rites", yet keeps coming back for more. I guess he is just too tough and stubborn to let go easily .... even if that's what he wants.

My aunt was kind of the same way. She was written off numerous times, yet kept coming back from the brink.

I guess they had to be tough people to survive the ordeals they went through in the war.

On Sunday, we went to see my grandma in the hospital. Her body was "shutting down". She - barely - recognized me. I told her my wife and daughter were there.

She started praying........for everyone in her family - prayer went on for about 25 minutes - she was incoherent, but not on pain meds or anything. Tough to understand, but she listed off names - sometimes saying the same one 5 times within a minute, interspersed with other family members..........

We left later, feeling it was the last time we'd see her alive. Later that evening, my mom told us "grandma is confessing now."

A bit later, when g'ma was harder to understand, she spelled out "T R I C K". Then later, she said "the son of the seventh will be deceived." She managed to get out "I'm ready see dad". (dad is what she called grandpa - he died 24 yrs. ago)

Even with her bi pap mask, her oxygen levels were terrible......I fully expected a call saying she had passed away.

This afternoon, they sent her home from the hospital! Amazing what stubborn people can do, huh?

As a rule of thumb the human body typically shuts down without water after 3 to 5 days. I once had a patient last 23 days without a sip. The human body is a crazy machine.

My Uncle Al passed this afternoon at shortly after noon.

RIP Uncle Al. I know that your wife of almost 50 years awaits you with love and joy.

Thank you.

He definitely got more extra time than anyone expected.

The say that the greatest compliment you can give a man is this: That "He was a good man". My uncle was demanding, and far from perfect, but he was a good man.
