Wow, that seems sudden... Sure he's been off a little this year, but must be more to it than we know, can't imagine a few bad snaps and they give up on him, how do we explain half the roster if that's the case?
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

Wow, that sucks. Always liked the guy, thought he was a true pro. But, he's been off his game this year, and it's tough to justify keeping a guy who only plays a position like long snapper if he's struggling.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Shame to see him go but, as has been said, if you are a pure specialist, you better be flawless. Ponti was for a long time...but is no longer.
When you muff two snaps that badly that cost you a W in both in just three games, you can;t be that surprised.
See ya Ponti.

Hadn't heard a peep outta him since I blasted Botch for using a 5th on him..now he's cut..interesting..wonder if he was having problems in practice also.

Well, this sucks!
I wonder if his back never fully healed or something?? The dude's been snapping his entire life - ya don't just forget how to do something you've done ten thousand times unless you're having to work around something.
Hmmm..... I dislike this regime even more now. I wonder who will fill the spot on ST's?

I was thinking that maybe it was something like what Dodger's second baseman, Steve Sax, went through where, after years of playing 2B, he stopped being able to make the throw to 1B. Everything was in the dirt or wide of the mark - a real mental block of what you'd think is a matter of muscle-memory.

They have yet to say who will replace him. I would think they would already have someone on the roster first, no?

WOW,, two bad snaps this year and what, maybe 2 in the previous 7 years?
One of them this year isn't even his fault..
I really don't' understand this move. On it's face, it makes no sense.
I can't defend this move.. Just can't.

It's a long snapper. Might be the easiest roster spot to fill.
With all the non contact rules surrounding the position, you can get a guy off the couch.

Yup, that's the first thing I though of too. Snapping a football should be so easy and repeatable....but it's not. If doubt creeps into your brain, the whole process can fall apart.
Good luck Ponti.
And yes, when I read the title of this thread, I first thought of Purp's sig. Funny.

He has been absolutely horrible this year. Last year I doubt he got more than 3 snaps outside of that 6 inch square. This year he has just been all over the place. He lost it, time to move on.

Wow! You'd think that, given this team is going NOWHERE this season, they'd give them the rest of the year to work through any issues he was having. He's a two-time Pro Bowler at his position for goodness sake. Stupid never takes a holiday.

This is the one time where we don't have anyone saying, "We gotta get Insert Player's Name" because none of us even know any longer snappers. Especially ones that are available.
Jared Allen long snapped for Minnesota last week. I think we should get him.

Rewatch some of the games. His snaps have been all over the place. Our punter (who's also the holder) should be relieved. I felt bad for him standing or kneeling back there, wondering whether he's going to have to jump or dig one out of the dirt before concentrating on the task at hand.

I saw the FB that we cut, Tyler Clutts, longsnapping for the Bears a few weeks ago. Not sure if he was filling in for someone. I think it was on the Sunday night game 2 weeks ago.

Stupid move....and I've been grilling Ponty all season...it's not like we're contending, you just don't cut 1 of the best LS for years after 10 or so bad games....I suspect there are either personal problems on Ponty's part or there was some heated exchange of words after Shurmur's PC comment
This is stupid, really

I disagree... As you said, we're not in a position to contend. Ponti is slipping so may as well go youth movement.
As others have said, his snaps have been pretty unpredictable this year. Luckily, Maynard is a pretty good holder.

What other option is there when your long snapper isn't getting the job done? Waste a roster spot by benching him? The only other option I can think of is to put him on IR.

It was time. He has been really erratic this year.
Sucks to see a long time guy leave like that ..... but he wasn't doing the job.

Sad to see the guy go. I wonder if he was looking bad in practice too.
Probably Butch's best draft pick.

Yeah it doesn't make any sense to do it right now, wait until the season is over then find a new long snapper.
I don't get it.

I agree, the snaps have been off.
I think it is a bit of a overreaction by a regime looking to mitigate the record, but it is what it is and I won't lose any sleep over it.

I don't think so in a bad way.
As was said, maybe his snaps in practice have been way off. Add that to a bad snap yesterday in the game and it provided the motivation to make the move now.

Long Snapper certainly isn't the end-all be-all of a football team by any stretch...but he was literally the best on the planet for almost the last decade.
One bad year and the regime over-reacts and flat out cuts the man?
Hey Shurmur, your entire season has SUCKED ASS. For that matter, hey HOLMGREN....your entire tenure here has been an unmitigated DISASTER. Can we cut both of them too?
Please???
What a farce this front office is. Holmgren is an f'n joke.
