Trump to moderate GOP presidential debateBy NBC's Garrett Haake Real estate mogul Donald Trump will host a debate for Republican presidential candidates in Iowa just days before the state's Jan. 3 caucuses. Trump spokesman Michael Cohen confirmed the details of a New York Times report to NBC News: Trump, the star of the reality show "The Apprentice," will moderate a debate on Dec. 27 in Des Moines, Iowa. The debate is being sponsored by the conservative magazine Newsmax. Cohen told NBC he had no list of confirmed candidates, and wasn't able to name the venue yet. He also stressed that it is not a "Donald Trump Debate," just that Trump would be moderating. Still, the debate keeps with the outsized role Trump has played in the primary process since ruling out running himself for the GOP nomination. Most of the other candidates in the race have met with Trump, though, who has continued to opine on the race -- and even flirt with an independent bid for the presidency. http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/02/9170757-trump-to-moderate-gop-presidential-debateKudos to Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul for turning down the invitation to this debate. Gingrich has accepted. IMO, taking part in such a circus gives the appearance of the GOP candidates "kissing the ring" of this bloated self-promoter. They should all reject it out of hand. Dave.

I agree.
Trump is a clown, and participating in these debates is participating in the circus.
Trump or not, on the whole I think these constant debates are hurting the GOP candidates, not only because it gives them more opportunity to trip up, but also due to the nature they seem to have taken, especially in terms of crowd reactions. The base may enjoy them, but the booing of an Iraq vet or the cheering for the notion of a man being left to die because he doesn't have insurance isn't going to play in a general election.
The more of these that take place, the more the candidates seem to drift towards unelectable hardline stances. Thus far, only Romney and Gingrich seem to understand that. Eventually, it will come down to them, with Romney as the obvious choice.
I think the GOP hurt themselves by not backing him strong from the outset.

Donald Trump is obviously a successful man., and he should be applauded for his success.. but as a political figure or even moderator,, he's a clown..

he's fine as a moderator because he's just there to get more eyeballs to the debate. that is fine.
Phil has some good points about the number of debates, but with the candidates that are out there; it's sort of a lost cause at this point. Obama looks to be getting a 2nd term unless someone comes up with something they haven't put out there yet.
i'll be voting for Ron Paul at this point (speaking of lost causes - and I completely disagree with his isolationism stances, but least of evils)

Donald Trump presents:
GOP Apprentice!
I wonder if at the end of the debate, he will declare a winner and tell everyone else that they are "Fired".
To be serious though, it is all a joke. The entire Republican party is a joke and this is the topping on the cake.

How does pointing to the Democrats refute his point that the GOP is a joke?

Gratuitous smack begets gratuitous smack. So it goes in political "discourse" nowadays.
Regarding your point about too many Republican debates, I'm torn because on one hand I think its good to hear them speak on issues, and on the other hand its just more of the same rhetoric, and they run the risk of becoming really tiresome and over-exposed. But then I remember that nobody's even watching, except junkies like me. I thought the CNN foreign policy debate was pretty good, but some of the other were way too over-moderated. I'm looking forward to the field thinning to 2 or 3 (probably Gingrich - Romney - Paul) so the candidates can have enough time to give more expansive responses to questions, rather than having the 45 second bell interrupt them mid-thought.
Last, the audience at the one debate was not cheering the idea of a person not having health insurance dying because they chose not to purchase it. They were cheering the concept of taking responsibility for yourself and your family, and of actions having consequences. The gay soldier was booed because his question was pretty much agenda-driven, not to mention moot, since DADT is no longer the law of the land.

WOLF BLITZER: But, Congressman, are you saying that society should just let him die?
CROWD: (cheers) Yes! Yeaaaaah!
View it any way you'd like ... stuff like that absolutely will not play in a November presidential election, and costs the GOP some points among moderate voters.

yeah, but he also said that (and i'm paraphrasing here) before medicaid, that the hospital never turned anyone away.
At some point people have to be responsible for there own actions.
People will always step up to help their neighbor...they have done it willingly for years.
this government takes your money whether you want to help or not...depriving you of your "choice"
