I think when it comes to McCoy "Stat Padding" The only argument people are having is semantics.

Some People are saying McCoy is Padding his stats.

People are taking that to mean he's LITERALLY only trying to make his numbers better...

While I don't think he's PURPOSELY trying to make his numbers better, I do think that towards the end of the game, his style of play makes his numbers seem better than the game he played...

A competent Rookie QB is not going to fix what is wrong with the Browns offense at RT and WR.

We already have a competent QB. What we don't have is a competent OL and serviceable backups on that line. We also don't have competent receivers. Massaquoi won't come back to help a scrambling QB. If it's anything but a perfect pass, our receivers won't catch them. Even if it is a perfect pass, they're dropping the ball and killing drives in the process.

Quote:

Also, I'm not so sure the Browns don't need an OG, given that Steinbach had back surgery and is not getting younger.

We certainly do need an OG, particularly a RG.

Quote:

Here is what I look for the Browns to do in the offseason...move Pinkston to RT, draft a stud OG with the 2nd round pick. Draft a WR with one of our two first round picks and draft defense with the other first round pick.

I'm not certain about that move to RT for Pinkston. He's shown to be somewhat competent substituting for Steinbach, and could be his future replacement. Lauvao would be an emergency substitution only.

I'd also take the OG in the first round and I'd be targeting DeCastro with the second of our two first rounders. If Steinbach comes back, you have Pinkston as our backup OG and OT. Then you draft a RT and anchor that OL within the second or third rounder.

With the other first rounder, I'd be looking to draft a WR (preferably Blackmon) but I'd consider trading back again and getting more picks, including future picks.

Quote:

If the Browns use their first round pick on a QB, it leaves the pick the Browns got from Atlanta to address our WR or Defensive needs, but they can't address both needs with the top talent in the draft.

We need more need on the offensive side of the ball than on the defensive side. To be sure, we desperately need an improved LB corps, but after having addressed the D with Haden & TJ Ward last year and then again with Phil Taylor & Jabaal Sheard this past year, it's time to seriously address the offensive side of the ball.

No, I do not think that he is purposely trying to pad his stats at the expense of the team ..... I think that he is trying to get his team back in the game with a score. However, until defenses loosen up on us, he simply is not able to get it going in a great number of games. His stats improve as defenses start playing a looser "prevent" style defense at the very end.

You haven't heard me comparing Colt to a Manning or anybody else.

Ok.....I'll compare him to Tim Couch, simply because he is a Browns qb.

We need to have another QB in place.

Simply put, we can't stick with Colt because we have nothing else.

We know Wallace isn't a option and we know whoever the heck the 3rd string guy isn't a option.

We can't afford to stick with Colt 5-6 years as we did with Tim before we figure out it isn't going to work.

We have to get this right. We can't fail.

I really think that we'll keep the LT-RG alignment the same next season. I can see a possibility where Steinbach comes back and moves in to the RT spot.

Because the post I responded to brought up Manning.

Another reason why I made the post I did (because somoeone else was comparing him as such)...that PLUS you and others continue to compare him with the great QBs of the league...in more than just that post/thread.

Quote:

Maybe I should have answered that post by comparing him with Spurgeon Wynn?

Yes...it would fit perfectly with the typical Colt bashing that goes on in here. The non-bashers say that we are awful in too many spots in order to evaluate Colt...which is true.

The Colt-bashers say that we can't wait for everything to be perfect in order to evaluate Colt...which is also true.

From awful to perfect...from Manning to Wynn...playing the extremes fits in nicely with the argument of the bashers.

A real NFL RT and a real NFL WR is all I need to give to Colt to see if he's got something long-term. Just a real one...a legit NFL one...not perfect...not awful. He presently has awful.

You think that he needs to have all of the pieces in place and perfect before we can appraise his play. I (and others) disagree.

We'll see what those whose opinions really matter have to say about things in the off-season.

A few things in response to the folks that repsonded to me:

Django- Thank you for acknowledging the points in my post. I agree with you that it is looking more and more like Colt is not the guy, but I will continue to stick to my guns in regards to the talent, or more specifically the lack thereof, around him. I will also remain adamant that given our needs and our draft status, it would not be in our best interests to pursue a QB unless one falls to us. Even then, I would hesitate and concentrate on RT, WR and LB in that order.

Attack- I have followed Roethlisberger since he was a child. I am from the Findlay area and played his first school as a conference rival. I you recall, last year after the rape allegations went unpursued, Findlay businesses and townfolk were disavowing him, so he decided to claim Cory Rawson as his hometown. What is truly funny is that there is no such place as Cory Rawson, it is a school that is comprised of two municipalities, Mount Cory and Rawson. I played for a school called Van Buren and Cory Rawson was a rival of ours. He transferred to Findlay after 6th grade, I believe. I have met him a few times at parties and a few friends of mine that played ball at higher levels knew him better. I personally can't stand the guy, and it goes a lot deeper than the crap team he plays for. Needless to say, I have followed his career with somewhat interest, given my love for the Browns and the desire to see him crumbled in half.

As for Joe Flacco, I didn't really see him in college, but then again, unless you lived on the east coast, I don't really know how many folks did. Interestingly enough, my roommate played DT for Pitt the year Flacco was a redshirt Frosh and said he seemed like the real deal then.

Finally, YTown- I took the liberty to quote you (and I hope it works, as I'm not themost tech savvy person here) " ." I think we are looking at the same painting, just coming to different conclusions of what we see. Being a former offensive lineman and having played with numerous different QBs thoughout my time, I think that a QB is a part of the collective. I have already stated that I think the importance of the QB is utmost, yet the TEAM that surrounds him is important as well. The stats you threw out there regarding the Colts were interesting, but they can also be manipulated to prove other points, too. For example, didn't the Colts FO dradft Donald Brown in the hopes that he could help take some pressure off Manning by providing a boost to the running game? Addai is always hurt, and the thought was that Brown could come in alleviate some of that, yet he didn't pan out. Thus, putting more of an onus on Manning to throw the ball, especially when Addai was hurt yet again and Brown was proving to be a bust. Also, what is the status of the OL this year compared to last? Is it the exact same? Are there any injuries, additions, subtractions, etc..? The one thing that is undisputable fact is that they are all a year older, and there is no equalizer like time!

I guess what I am trying to say is that to continually try and draw parallels or differences between the best QBs that have been around a while and a 3rd rd QB in the first year of an overmatched HC (had to get that dig in, as I do dislike Shurmur!) is ridiculous. Give this kid a toy like Dalton has Green in the form of someone like Blackmon and then I'll make my judgements. Until he has a chance to compete with at least a semblance of an offense (playcalling included) I can't hold anything in fair judgement.

Again, I disagree that a QB needs all of the pieces in place before he can fairly be evaluated. I think that there are many things that a QB does that can be evaluated regardless of who he plays alongside.

'Some' drops? Hell...that was just the Ravens game. How many games have there been 4+ drops?

You say that as if the drops we have is 'normal' in the league. It's not. It's not even close.

We are simply not a good enough team - including the QB - to overcome the droppping of very-catchable balls.

Quote:

People want to talk about drops and such, but man, there are 3 games with this type of situation, and there might be more, with the same story. His garbage time stats more than balance out the drops. He is what his numbers say he is. He is a below average QB with many flaws in his game, and probably too many to ever overcome.

I heavily discount his stats due to garbage time...to the point that I ignore them...the Colt bashers heavily discount the drops. Well...the critical drops aren't happening/remembered in garbage time.

The drops are as big a part of the problem as any of his own personal flaws.

I agree that he certainly is what he is...and he may be below average...but his numbers FAR from tell the story.

I agree.

As I have recently said, you see flashes in the special guys. Special flashes.

Not the type of flashes Colt had....avg. QB flashes.

The guy is a NFL back-up QB and we have people pretending he is a solid NFL starter.

No wonder we suck if Mgt. can get away with that.

Of course no one is saying that. What we are saying is that there is a huge difference between a point in the game where the game is lost, and the pressure is off, and the defense wants to get the game over with ....... and a point in the game where the opposing defense is worried about actually stopping you.

A word about Colt's garbage time stats:

4th quarter, game within 7 points (Crunch Time): 37/65 (57%) for 293 yards, 4.5 yards/attempt
4th quarter, Browns down by more than 7 points*: 50/80 (62.5%) for 478 yards, 5.9 yards/attempt

*Note: We have only been up by more than 7 points in the 4th quarter for 3:30 against the Colts.

So yes, his stats are better when there is nothing on the line in the 4th quarter, but only marginally. The yards/attempt stat is telling though. However, statistically, his best quarter is actually the 2nd.

Wolfey26: NIce to see another NW Ohio resident. I'm from Bluffton and have heard similar stories about Roethlisberger being a jerk.

It's not just about the stats..

It's the fact that Colt can only consistantly move the Owfense when the opposing teams Defense is allowing him too...

What? Really? That's the only time he can move the offense? Ridiculous.

What defense were the Ravens in when Moore dropped the TD pass? The let-Colt-move-down-the-field-defense?

If you said that Colt's stats are meaningless because much of the stats come in garbage time, then I would agree. I would then say that Colt's stats are meaningless for lots of reasons.

That comment is so typical of the extremes used by many to bash Colt.

When we hired Homgren it seemed like most if not everybody on this board was excited, and one thing we all agreed on that he was a QB guru. He has had the utmost success finding and developing QBs, and if he would end up getting one thing right, it's the QB.

So let's see what he does this off-season.

It might be free agency, a trade, a draft pick or some combination of the above, but I bet he does something (about the starting quarterback situation, that is.)

We'll see.

I believe that we can evaluate McCoy without any different players. You want to see him with different players first.

However, remember the OL with Frye? Then remember the same OL with Anderson? Same players. Different results. I believe that a QB impacts the players around him more than the others player impact him. You disagree. that's fine.

We'll see what happens after the season.

No.

Matt Barkley 2012

I disagree. Put Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers behind this line and with our receivers they'll stink it up too. You can't compare those guys to McCoy with the simple fact that they came onto teams with more skilled players around them than what we have on our team. Couple that fact with the ineptitude of Shurmur as an offensive, offensive coordinator; there isn't as single quarterback in the league that would succeed on this team.

Give McCoy another year after we address our offensive line issues and actually bring in an OC that can coach.

Doesn't it just seem like the Colts, Steelers, Chargers, Packers, and Saints have struck gold drafting receivers? Mid rounders, late rounders, even UDFA types all seem to have success.

Colt is supposed to play the game as it unfolds in front of him. Nobody's saying he should do anything different.

What I'm saying is that his numbers can be misleading, because his best production generally happens when games are out of hand. Nothing more.

Certain Colt-bashers have a disdain for Colt's garbage time stats that go waaaaaaaaaaaaaay beyond him simply playing the game as it unfolds in front of him...they speak of garbage time as if that was Colt's intended plan to pad his stats. (Not saying that is you.)

I understand that line of thinking and I am agreeing with all of that except the "Nothing more" part. Some of his best potential production that is lost due to simple drops happens BEFORE garbage time.

In fact, those drops - along with portions of his own play - play a large part in what GETS us to so much garbage time.

Basically if Colt doesn't show us anything against the Steelers or Ravens the next 4 games we should cut our losses now.

It was amazing how in 2006 I got skewered for having the same thoughts on Frye. At least people are coming around on it.

What could you possibly expect to see that would be any better than the crap football we have played so far?

What is "show us anything"?

Are we picking up a legit NFL WR and RT for those last few games?

Is Hillis going to play? Or are we back to Obi as our feature back?

Will Moore drop another TD pass? Will Watson take one in the facemask again?

Will Pashos and Lavauo get McCoy killed?

Will McCoy have another pick 6 brain fart?

I think the FO and Shurmur have already made a decision and these last few games don't mean squat unless McCoy goes into the fetal position during the game.

By now, they have enough games under their belt to make one of any three conclusions - in no partcular order:

Colt CAN be the guy

Colt CANNOT be the guy

We simply have no idea if Colt can be the guy or not...it will be given more time.

Maybe i did start rambling after agreeing about adding qb's if you can.

I would like to clarify that i'm not saying that we need to just up and keep colt as a starter for 5 years.

What i was implying was more of a question of whats a reasonable amount of time for a qb to develop?

Holmgren says 2 years...same system. Then you know what you have.

Many posters have already made their judgement, and are screaming for change. I don't disagree that what we see on offense sucks for the most part.

If qb is a position you have to develop, then time is going to be needed no matter who it is. Look at what pitt does to rookie qb's.

It takes time for any qb and receiver to develop chemistry too. This is what makes an offense click.

At some point we have to stop yanking the rug out from under these guys and let them develop.

I might agree, if I actually knew what you meant by: "cut our losses."

If you meant "Send the kid packing for whatever we can get for him," I'd strongly disagree. If you meant: "Find another, more suitable #1... on the hurry-up," you'd probably get no argument from me.

Now look- I'm still in that camp that thinks:

1. He hasn't yet adjusted to NFL speed
2. Protection is shoddy
3. Running game has been largely unsupportive
4. WR's drop too many passes (blame it on bad passes ifyawanna, but WR's are paid to catch the damned ball if it's within their grasp)

...for anyone to truly know if he's reached his ceiling yet... but I will say this much:

He's a viable backup with the skillset we've already seen.

If we never develop the team to the point that all those 'variables' I mentioned get put into place, he's at least shown that he can move the ball, burn clock and manage an O for 2-3 series per game. He might even be able to do it for a game or two, against teams that have planned for our #1. What else does a team expect/need from its backup? If you need a backup to take over for a starter who's put on IR in Game Seven and take you to the playoffs, then you're actually talking about a 'starter' (on a lesser team, at least)... or a "Cinderella Story."

On the other hand, I'd loved to have seen some quicker growth this year from Colt (despite the new system/coaches)... but his rate of progress has left me less than impressed. He could grow beyond what we've seen, but if too many pieces need to be perfectly placed for him to thrive, I'm afraid it would take 2-3 more drafts before his "ideal scenario" is in place.... and by then, it will be too late for the QB (read "Tim Couch Syndrome").

Truth be told- I don't see a single college QB prospect available in this next draft who'd look decidedly better against the Ravens and Steelers in his first or second year, considering the 'supporting cast' we have available for him.... and I see only a handful of NFL QB's who could even get us to .500 by season's end. Bottom line: NO (am I being clear enough here?) NFL quarterback, prospective or established, could produce a .750 season for this team with the personnel we now have... or will have next year. None. Not even Aaron freakkin' Rogers.

With that said, I think the FO would be prudent to start looking for the Browns' Next Big Thang at QB, but I don't think the answer lies in this year's crop of draft prospects. The timing's not right. Who's gonna teach (by example) the rook about the Holmy/Shurmer NCO? The QB everyone wants to fire? Where's the established 'veteran presence' to provide the example for Young Stud to follow? If Young Stud doesn't get his "clipboard year(s)"... what makes him any different than Colt McCoy is now?

Same old "same old" for the Browns. No depth. No 'leadership by example.'

In the long-term outlook, it may be better to give 2012 to McCoy, while other (upcoming) QB options are considered, and other holes filled. FO/Coaches will get another year to work out bugs, Heckert will have another draft to plug in, and a clearer picture might emerge.

What promising Sophomores/Juniors are out there at QB? Has anyone looked that far down the road... or is everyone just "stuck on Luck?"

Not guaranteeing solutions... just thinking out loud here.

In effect,, you did.. If you wanna tell me and everyone else that with a better QB, the line plays better, the Running game improves and WR's improve.. Then you are in effect, laying everything right at Colts feet..

With a better QB, the line plays better, the running game improves, and the WRs improve. I'll also add the defense improves.

This is a 100% accurate statement. It's no coincidence that it takes a top 10 QB to win the Super Bowl every year.

Whether you want to believe it or not. But I don't think it's that you don't want to believe it ... it's that you just don't get it.

It's the one ultimate truth of the NFL.

I understand what he's saying.. he's placing all the blame on McCoy.. I'm saying that McCoy has fault and some blame also, but I don't see how getting another QB would make the Line better or the receivers catch catchable balls.

I think you don't get it.

I really think that we'll keep the LT-RG alignment the same next season. I can see a possibility where Steinbach comes back and moves in to the RT spot.

Why would we swing Steinbach to the RT spot?

if anything, I'd think Steinys absence has proven everyone wrong that thought he wasn't getting the job done as the left guard.

I also think that Pinkston might just make a decent Starting RG.. I think he could be better than lauvao.. that leaves us to find Pashos replacment. We really need to find that guy..

I agree. He is way undersized for RT.

It's not just about the stats..

It's the fact that Colt can only consistantly move the Owfense when the opposing teams Defense is allowing him too...

You think some of that might have to do with the play calling and the fact that McCoy didn't have the ability to call audibles?

The last game against the Ravens wasn't a good one, but the results weren't exactly astonishing. We have a sub-par offense (taken as a whole, not just McCoy, the RBs and the receivers) against one of the best defenses in the league.

We have a rookie HC who has also been doing the OC duties. I think this is a clear case of having Shurmur (and Holmgren by allowing it) having 'bitten off more than he can chew'.

Maybe we'll see a different result next year with an actual OC calling the plays on offense.

For reference, take a look at Shurmur's OC calling stats from last year with St. Louis. Not exactly worthy of inspiring confidence in his abilities. Look at the scores that his play calling abilities produced.

Is it any surprise we can't get the ball into the end zone? Really?

Look at Bradford's QB stats from last year and compare them against McCoy's this year.

WOW...112 responses since I left yesterday...I'm not going to go back and read thru all of them...concerning Steinie and the offensive line...

Daman...I agree, watching the difference in the left side of the Oline without Steinie vs with him last season made me appreciate his play at RG more than I had previously.

If Steinbach fully recovers from his back surgery, he will return to his old spot at RG, which will force Pinkston to move. Playing for the Pittsburgh Panthers, Pinkston played RT for 3 games as a freshman before being injured and when he returned as a sophomore, he took over the LT spot and held down that position for 3 years.

Given Pinkston's college experience, it is very possible that Pinkston will take over the RT spot for the Browns next season. That does not mean the Browns will not be thinking of drafting more OLine talent, imo.

If the Browns do not pick up a OG in free agency, I look for Heckert to draft a stud OG early in the 2nd round to compete with Lauvao and give the Browns more OL depth.

Hey,, if Pinkston is moved to RT and plays it well, I'll have no problem with it.

Yawn..I tire of this cat n mouse game with QB's.
Amd for those who keep saying they're on the fence with CM just ask your selves a question..what do U see when he plays?
I saw very little in him that gets my attention and makes me feel he can go to another level.

As you watch the Browns offense stall time and time again..he stalls..he cannot sustain a drive to score points consistantly.
Now strike out the drop passes ,we see that every year..but look at the QB himself and evaluate him alone..it isn't that hard..it took me a few games this year to see he wasn't improving REGARDLESS of what piece of crap wideouts are trotted out there.

of course, if anyone is moved there and plays well, then noone will complain. the problem is there are reasons that when we drafted him Heckert went out of his way to make sure people knew it was as an OG. and, that is also the reason he dropped in the draft.

my hopes are that Steinbach comes back healthy for the LG spot and Pinkston can take the RG spot next year. and, we draft a RT in the 2nd or 3rd round (FA is pretty meek as usual there).

Ha,, That's funny.. On this board, if a guy plays well but makes a mistake once, there is always someone or group of someones that want them gone.. NO MATTER WHAT.
