Lewis confident he can lead Browns running attack By JOE MILICIA, Associated Press Writer March 8, 2007
AP - Mar 7, 9:50 pm EST More Photos
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Jamal Lewis isn't promising 2,000 yards, but thinks he can be the same bruising running back who tormented the Cleveland Browns for years.
"They know what I can do. Hopefully, we can do it to other teams now," Lewis said in a teleconference Thursday.
Lewis signed a one-year deal Wednesday with Cleveland that could be worth as much as $3.5 million, a move that takes him from first to worst in the AFC North.
The 27-year-old has seen his numbers decline since he was the NFL's Offensive Player of the Year in 2003. He believes though that can help the Browns get to where the Baltimore Ravens are.
"I've got a lot left in the tank when I have something to work with, and I feel Cleveland is going to give me that opportunity to do what I do," Lewis said. Lewis signed with the Browns without visiting another team. Lewis was convinced by Cleveland's acquisition of free agent guard Eric Steinbach and other improvements he expects on the offensive line.
His history with Browns general manager Phil Savage, a former talent evaluator for the Ravens, also was a major factor for Lewis, who served time in prison two years ago for using a cell phone to set up a drug buy.
"Phil Savage knows who I am and what I'm capable of," Lewis said. "I just know he's going to take care of me and put me in a good position."
Lewis embarrassed the Browns by running for an NFL single-game record 295 yards in 2003 on his way to 2,066 yards, the second-highest total in league history.
He hasn't come anywhere close since.
He ran for 1,132 yards and nine touchdowns last season, his best statistics in three years, but averaged just 3.6 yards per carry.
"Everybody looks for me to get 2,000 every year," said Lewis, who indicated he was frustrated by Baltimore's unwillingness to make him the focus of the offense.
Lewis was due a $5 million roster bonus and was released by the Ravens last week in a salary-cap move.
Baltimore turned around and traded three draft picks to Buffalo for running back Willis McGahee on Thursday.
Bone spurs prevented Lewis from planting on his ankle last season, he said, adding that he is in better condition after recent surgery to have them removed.
"On the football field, I still have the breakaway speed. I still hit the holes like I need to," Lewis said. "With 20 to 25 carries, I can put up those nice numbers everybody likes to see."
He could be sharing carries if the Browns select Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson with the No. 3 overall pick, a move that would surprise Lewis.
"They can spend that money somewhere else," he said.
The Browns also must decide what to do with feature back Reuben Droughns. They owe Droughns a $1.75 million roster bonus later this month, but may choose to cut him instead.
"I didn't even raise the question about Reuben Droughns," Lewis said. "That's something they have to deal with."
Lewis ran for 7,801 yards and 45 TDs in seven seasons with Baltimore. Many of those yards came against the Browns, a team he viewed as having some talent, but always unable to put it together.
"My perception before was, 'Does this team really want to win?"' he said. "Now going in, I can see they really do want to win."

well, his comments are a little harsh,, but then I think I want someone that just wants to win,,,
I liked the comment about Peterson,,,,"they can spend that money somewhere else" I kinda got a kick out of that.
I'm good with this signing...

Now this is what I want to hear.
Even Lewis knows he won't do much if the Browns don't build him an offensive similar to the one he had in Baltimore.
This statement tells me Savage is not done with the offensive line..."Steinbach and other improvements he expects on the offensive line."

The statement above is the writers opinion, not that of Lewis.
Lewis followed the above statement with this..."They can spend that money somewhere else," he said.

Just watching PTI kornheiser gave Lewis 80% that he'd get 1000 yards and Dan Lebatard gave him 0% to get 1000 yards behind the "leagues worst offensive line"

Any chance at all that Phil said, "we are going to use you like Pittsburgh used Bettis, every time we get inside the 20, you get the ball. That way you get a GREAT TD ratio."
?
I just can't beleive that Phil would let Jamal have ANY clue what he was going to due, or how he was leaning, in the draft.

Yea, I saw that. Dan Artard must not know we signed Steinbach and are leaning on drafting Joe Thomas.

No. Lewis has stated he wants the rock around 25 to 30 times a game. I seriously doubt he would have come here if he had to share carries w/a guy who would be an obvious fan favorite.
Let me put it to you this way..........if I wanted the Browns to draft Peterson, I would be seriously pissed right now, because I would realize the odds of that happening are slim and none.

Is Lewis naive enough to think we are not going to do anything at RB in the draft because he signed for 1 stinkin year.....gimme a break. It may not be Peterson but we will get a back in rounds 1-3....outside chance 4th round.

Yea, I know , (as Vers smiles), But I never give up hope, I am a Browns fan after all .
And I don't think it's quite "slim to none", It just took a serious hit .

I agree with this wholeheartedly. But I was amazed listening to the NFL channel on Sirius today how many of those guys think this means we're dumping Reuben and drafting AP.
Of course, at least one of those guys said (twice) that we'd now have to dump William Green. So take it with a grain of salt.

Give you a break? Why?
I think the intelligent course of action would be to ride Lewis this year and draft a RB early next year, because next year's RB class is outstanding.
We could always ink Lewis next year to a new contract when he might be more willing to split carries, as he will be a year older and his options won't be as good.

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/blawg/post.php?id=6553Blawg Pound Jamal Lewis's Blawg >> Jamal Lewis Email Jamal Lewis March 8, 2007 I'm excited to be a Brown posted by @ 4:30 pm | comment First off, let me say I'm excited to be a member of the Cleveland Browns. I plan to do everything I can to help the team win and entertain the fans, and hopefully -- despite the past - you will all welcome me with open arms. A big part of me coming to the Browns had to do with my prior relationship with Phil Savage. I first met Phil when I talked to him at the NFL Combine in 2000. At the time he was the director of college scouting for the Ravens. What impressed me off the bat about Phil is that he's a people person. During my time with the Ravens, he'd ask me what I needed and what I wanted. He really wanted to get my input on how to make the team better. A player likes when a GM shows he's really interested in our opinions. It made an impression on me. I was kind of upset when he left Baltimore. But it's good he came to Cleveland because now I'm here, too. When I took my visit to Cleveland on Wednesday, I saw the commitment the team has made to improving the offense with the changes in the offensive staff and the new coordinator they brought in and it showed me the team is committed to winning. From there, I was sold. Now that I'm a Brown, it's certainly going to be a little crazy come this season when I line up against my former teammates for the first time. I played with them for seven years so those guys are good friends of mine and they'll remain good friends. But when it's time to play each other it'll be a different story. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the fans in Cleveland. I've played enough in Cleveland Browns Stadium to know the team has great fans that ride behind the team through thick and thin. That's something you really want to be a part of. It's also exciting to know I'll be putting on the same uniform that Jim Brown -- one of the greatest running backs of all time -- did back in the '50s and '60s. I've been compared to him a couple times, but those are big shoes to fill. This team has a great history of running backs and I really want to be a part of that. I know you're used to rooting against me, but I hope you'll be happy I'm on your side of the field now. Hopefully you'll welcome me like anybody else. I plan to come in and do my job and entertain the fans, have a good time and win some ballgames.

Yea, all this interview really shows me is that we are leaning toward drafting Thomas if he is there. I mean do you really think that Lewis would have come here if Savage didn't tell him we were going to continue to improve the line? Judging by what is left out there in free agency, the only real oppourtunity for us to significantly improve the line is in the early part of the draft. Be it Joe Thomas, Sears, Blaylock, whoever, I believe we will definately address the O-line in one of the first two rounds, if not both.
As others have said, do you really think Lewis would come here if he thought we were drafting Peterson? He complained about not gettting enough carries last year, and if we drafted Peterson he would get fewer than he did with the Ravens. The pieces just don't fit together with everything that has been said by both Savage and Lewis.

Seriously? Signing Lewis has NO impact on our draft strategy. None.
What did you expect to hear from Lewis? "Well, I sure hope the Browns draft Adrian Peterson because I haven't proven that I can cut it lately. I'm only on a one-year contract anyway, so it's not like I expect the team to keep me around for the long haul. I took a one-year deal with the Browns because no one wanted me for longer, nor did they want me as a feature back, so I figure that in my platoon with Peterson, I'll get a good chunk of the carries. Oh... and I don't want Cleveland to add any more linemen because we're good enough there."
Come on. Does anyone here (other than Vers) seriously think Savage told a free agent (with no ties to the team before a contract is signed) what exactly his plans are for the draft? Lewis is a professional running back. Professional athletes think they're the only man for the job, no matter how ill equipped they are. Running backs want all the carries - they don't want to split. They also like offensive line.
All I heard from Lewis today was exactly what I expected him to say. Nothing has changed.
We're... we're good?

Few things from the radio interview... wrote on the fly, sorry if it's a little cryptic or sloppy. Said he signed because he's gonna be the feature back. Browns are commited to the run. We're making moves to improve the line. Works hard in the off-seaon to come in and do the job. Convinced by coaches, RAC & Phil when he walked through the door. Said he wanted to be here so it was up to the agent to get the numbers worked out. No animosity about leaving Ravens. Just glad for the opportunity here. No particular weaknesses in the Browns D leg to his good games. Just prepared for the games and had the good days. Thinks there will be more additions to the O-Line. Says he's a quiet and humble person, and got caught up in something when he was young, but has put it behind him and is getting on with his life. Just started running about a week ago off the surgery. Thinks he can run a high 4.3 to low 4.4 40 if he needed to, but it's more about finding the hole. Happy with the way things worked out, thinks Ravens are moving more toward being a passing team. Browns have some good talent, but need to put some things together and feels they are moving in the right direction, that was a big part of his decision to come here. In NC now, will be in Cleveland soon. Record day was just a great day with the O-line clicking, him clicking and good blocking downfield. Would not be dissappointed if we drafted Adrian Peterson. Maybe a little surprised (could spend money somewhere else). Wants 20-25 carries to get the good numbers and beat the Ds up. Because of bone spurs he couldn't fire off or plant like he wanted to. Feels much better now and has much more range of motion. Re: staying more that one year: If he does the things he knows he can do, he thinks one day he may retire as a Brown. Eric Steinbach and other on the O-line, bringing in Chud, and himself shows that we're commited to winning and these moves will help us improve this year. Has speed to get to outside as well as being a bruiser, beats people up in the 1st & 2nd quarter and turns on the speed in the 3rd and the 4th, that's his M.O.

A little arrogant in his comments, but I guess that's what you need out of a RB... it should be interesting watching what we do with both RD and the 3rd overall pick... i personally agree with Lewis and think we can spend our money a little better than Peterson (JT if he's there) but I wouldn't be overally upset with Peterson... especially if lewis is here as a one year and done.

i'm wondering about the deal for one year. Anyone have a feeling for that? Is it a tryout of sorts, with a possible longer deal if things work out, or is it a one-year stop gap while a new guy gets groomed?

1 of two things are going to happen mark my words:
1) In the first round with get Joe Thomas
or
2) In the 2nd round we take the best Guard/Tackle available Ugoh, Blalock, Grubbs, Sears..whoever is left...
Face it people Jamal Lewis is going to be our featured back....that is why we brought him into this organization..
Go Browns!!

All depends on performance. As he said in his interview, if he does the things he's capable of he could see himself retiring as a Brown.

To me Cap it to see if he can "walk the walk", It's no secret that over the past couple seasons his running abilities have diminished. With that being said if they continue to diminish this year he is gone.
However if he runs for 1200-1400 yards then we resign him..
So ya I would call it a try-out

Thanks Cal - I'll try to listen to it a little later... I'm still trying to shake the black and purple off my mental picture of him... I just hate Balti so much that it takes me awhile to get use to us having one... Phil is still on a tightrope with me even after a couple years

So we're gonna cut Droughns who had like 3 years left on his contract and sign a guy who averaged 3.6 ypc on a good team and has clearly run out of steam to a 1-YEAR DEAL and then say we have 0% chance of drafting a guy who is probably #2 no our draft board behind Russell? This make 0 sense to me and has no logic.
Our chances of drafting Peterson dropped maybe 1 or 2%. If Peterson is higher on Phil's board (highly likely), then Peterson is gonna be a Brown and Lewis is gonna be one half of a great platoon in a division that is about running the ball.

No, but I thought it was interesting that he said it. (Not sure he ever ran in the 4.3s, anyone know?) He went onto say that the 40 is like a track meet and that it had very little to do with being on the football field, that it was more about finding the holes.

I highly doubt that he means that he could do it right now being only a week removed from surgery. However, he obviously feels he can get back to that point. All I know, is if Jamal is back to where he can run in the 4.3-4.4 range, everyone wearing Orange and Brown is going to be very, very happy.

Seriously? Signing Lewis has NO impact on our draft strategy. None.
Good......that means we are STILL drafting Joe.

Come on. Does anyone here (other than Vers) seriously think Savage told a free agent (with no ties to the team before a contract is signed) what exactly his plans are for the draft?
An eyeroll? LMAO..........
I never said he told Lewis his drafting plans. I think he promised him that he would be the feature back and he would get the carries he desires.

I agree with that... that was Green's biggest knock in that he couldn't set up his blockers or find the holes... Lewis has always been very good at finding the holes.
