I am not a superfan of KISS,, But dang, you would think that they would be in the HOF..

Is there a reason they aren't? What am I missing.

Here is the criteria directly from the HOF website

Quote:

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

I don't know, but from my perspective, they seem to meet all the criteria..

Are they just not taken seriously?

Like I said, I'm no big fan of thiers. I do like a couple of thier records but I wouldn't pay to see them.. but still?

To me they are kind of a niche band, but the trends they set for rock and roll the rest of the way are undeniable. They really were pioneers. Marketing, presentation. I don't think their music is as good as a lot of HOF bands, but their contributions alone should get them in.

Don't forget it took the HOF forever to get Black Sabbath in.

KISS should be. They kinda made the arena rock show a real thing to be seen live. I mean Steely Dan,you won't find a more musically talented band..but seeing them live..total bore..might as well listen to the CD,album.
KISS never claimed to be musical genuises or savants by any means.
But I will put "Detroit Rock City".."Black Diamond" up against anything Led Zepplin did.....Zepplin was great..but they hijacked everything from Willie Dixon..John Lee Hooker and whatever Mississippi Delta Blues artist....
anybody that says KISS songs don't hold up......go to You Tube and punch in KISS..especially the live stuff from 1990..which was their high point performance wise...
KISS and Judas Priest belong in their.

and live..KISS smokes Zepplin.
in fact Zepplin is a tad overated.
Black Sabbath are the godfathers of metal. Vol.4 and Master of Reality blows away anything Zepplin put out..
and I like LZ 1 and 2 and 3....everything after Physical Graffiti blows for Zep...
but remove the songs Zepplin stole and what do you got.....

KISS was one of the biggest bands of all time.

They sold 40 million albums.

They created the "how to" of marketing a rock band, and one of the most interactive approaches to growing their fan base.

They absolutely belong in the Hall of Fame.

You are off your rocker. In what way are LZ overrated? Zep set the bar for guitar, drums and vocals in the R&R world. Just look at how they transformed music in the short time between when Page joined the Yardbirds until Led Zepplin 3.....what was it, 6 or 7 years? I'm also a Sabbath and Kiss fan. Sabbath (along with Judas Priest) set the bar for metal. Kiss is unequalled for stage presence. I do believe Kiss should be in the HOF for that and longevity, but to say their music is better or more deserving than Led Zep is ludicrous.

I think the bigger travesty is that bands like Rush and Boston aren't in the RNR Hall of Fame. Both bands were pioneers in their own genres. Rush influenced progressive rock while Boston was responsible for pioneering arena rock. I'd also add Boston's debut album as a major accomplishment. The album is full of quality songs that one rarely sees on a modern day rock album.

I love Zeppelin and can't agree that they are overrated.

For the record, I don't think KISS is overrated, because I think most of their fans know they aren't the greatest band ever, and they realize KISS is all about the presentation.

Rush should certainly be in. Didn't know that they weren't.

I always thought Warren Zevon should be in, but I understand why he isn't.

I heard Zevon wrote "Reconsider Me" as a direct appeal to the Rock HOF. True story.

Well, if blowing were the only criteria for not being allowed in, then IMO, the stones shouldn't be in the HOF... I've never been a stones fan, but there is NO QUESTION that they had/have an impact on RnR.. They belong in the HOF..no question about it.

As I said, I'm not a big fan of KISS.. But they've had a ton of hits, sold millions of Albums and even to this day, they sell out large venues around the world..

I'm not sure whatelse they can do....

I'm not a big Rush guy (can't stand the singer's voice, always thought it was a girl singer when I was a kid) but that's kind of a joke they aren't in.

Jimmy Page made a living off stealing off other artists.

Babe I'm Gonna Leave You was recorded way back in 1952 than covered by Joan Baez

Black Mountain Slide..copied

Dazed and Confused...when Page was playing with the Yardbirds...a guy named Jake Holmes opened up for them....Holmes performed Dazed and Confused and when he(Page) went to form the New Yardbirds....he stole it from Holmes.

How Many More Times was wrote by Howlin Wolf.

I like Zepplin.Robert Plant reinvented what being a front man is all about.
John Bonham was a monster.
I got a soundboard recording of their show at Richfield Ohio in 1975.

But stealing and not giving credit..thats wrong.
KISS's songs stand up to Zepplin's...
Zepplin influenced many artists.
But Deep Purple..Sabbath..KISS...all as good as Zep.
Zep is not the greatest RNR band of all time...

Never, ever, ever mention Judas Priest and Kiss in same sentence again. Rob Halford is arguably the greatest hard rock vocalist of all time and JP is the start from which all modern metal came from.

Kiss was a gimmick act, the only thing that came from Kiss was the glam rock era.

Nice connection with these posts. Zep recognized the talent Paul Rodgers was and signed Bad Co. to their Swan Song record label. Then, Rodgers and Page collaborated on The Firm. More recently, Rodgers fronted Queen for a tour. I agree with Peen, he should definitely be in the HOF. He has one of the most powerful voices I've heard live.

Let's be fair here...Paul Rodgers toured with Brian May and Roger Taylor. Queen was Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon Freddie is irreplaceable...greatest frontman in rock'n'roll history.

I don't know about that.

I suppose Elvis was more than a front man, but he was.

I wasn't a big Elvis fan, more a Cash fan, but it's hard to beat Elvis at the front of the stage.

I was never a Queen fan, but I do agree Freddy was good.....if you like transvestites with high voices.

Seriously....he was good.

I hear so many people say that. I saw them twice, the second time was the Sheer Heart Attack tour. They absolutely rocked back then. They didn't play the bubblegum stuff until after A Night at the Opera.

Gimmick acts don't last 38 years. KISS strong songwriting is proof of that.
I've seen KISS live when they did all acoustic in Cleveland in 1994.
they deliever the goods.
Priest is one of my favorite bands..saw them in Nov with Zakk Wylde..good show.

Do not get me started on this discussion...KISS should be in. I boycott the Hall of Shame until they fix this.

Haven't been on in awhile, but I like this Kendall Storm guy. He raises all the credible points and facts, but but gets met with traditional posters personal opinions. Heck, maybe the Rock Hall CEO posts as Dave?

And kingo, you and I usually agree on stuff...maybe not the brothel on W. 25th, but while I agree Halford defined vocals for heavy (read: HEAVY) metal, Paul Stanley can carry a pitch with any lead singer.

Black Sabbath was supposed to sign with Swan Song records in the spring of 1974,but Warner Bros would not let Ozzy and Co. out of their contract.
Sabbath's manager Patrick Meehan was stealing $$$$ from them.....
they wanted to be managed by Peter Grant.
all the backstabbing led Sabbath to name their next album Sabotage.

I actually believe KISS should be in the RRHOF. So many albums sold, so many tickets sold, theyare icons of a certain type of rock.

I was just saying, musically they are not in the same class as a Judas Priest or a Led Zepplin or a Deep Purple with Ian Gillan fronting. Can't knock Kiss for their success, some of their songs have become iconic, in a sometimes irritating way.

All accomplishments aside, they should be inducted based on the other members in the HoF alone.

I mean there are some inductee's that made me shake my head, especially when you look at the ROCK bands that have been snubbed over the years.

I am sure they were, and wasn't really saying that is a disparaging way.

It was about that time where rock changed to my ear. As you get older the sounds you remembered were replaced. Once they have been replaced a couple of times, it is no longer enjoyable.

You are old enough now to where I think you know what I am talking about.

Music evolves but what we like evolves at a much slower pace.

I always liked country music, but liked rock as well. Sometime in the early 80's is when I pretty much quit listening to rock and just kept it on the country dial and the country bin at the record stores.

Now that evolution has taken place with country music and find myself seeking only solid country gold.

I'm through evolving, my tastes are what they are. There hasn't been anything new in the last 15 years or so that I listen to. As George Thorogood said, "All the good songs have already been written". Anymore, almost all the music I listen to (and watch) are video clips from Youtube. I almost always find some newly posted high quality footage of old classic RNR everytime I log in there.

I'm 39. I hope this never happens to me. I find new music all the time that I love. I certainly don't allow anything on the radio to sway me. As a matter of fact I no longer listen to the radio for music at all. I can't stand all the 'new rock' such as Cold Play, nor can I stand what is being passed off as 'country' anymore.
Keep an open ear. There still some great music being made. Just don't expect to find it on your radio dial.

They CAN'T put everyone in @ once. They have to stretch it out and they want to cover bands from different decades. Heck, Donavan is just now getting in . . .

KISS will get in. Rush will get in. EVERYBODY will get in . . .

lol, I don't know who Donavan is so good point.

I don't like Kiss at all and like Rush a little so I'm not speaking as a fan of either. But Grand Master Flash getting in before those bands has cost the RHOF it's credibility.
