So as a Christmas present to my wife, I got her a new Moto Razr phone (her choice).
What application do I download/install on that thing so it can stream music/movies on our home network? I have my Win7 laptop setup to stream my Windows Media, allowing any device on the network to stream it.
I know the MotoCast app will allow streaming over the 4G network but that will chew up data usage quickly.
I just can't figure out which app allows streaming media over our Wi-Fi network. Her phone can connect to our network easily.
Any experienced Droid users here for advice? It seems like it should be fairly easy to connect to the streaming service on my laptop.

Hmm... try searching the Android market for DLNA aware player software?

My understanding motocast will stream over wifi, I have the bionic and wifi was the only way I could get it to work. 3g wouldn't work.

No, 3G wouldn't work for your in-house network. It HAS to be over Wi-Fi.

Thanks Purp. I'll give one of those a shot.
BTW....if you haven't experienced 4G yet, i must say i'm stunned at the speed. I downloaded the NFL app (9 megs) in about 3 seconds. That's faster than my turbo-charged Time Warner internet by far.

mox, how can I tell if the phone is using the wifi or 4G to stream the content? It's a fairly limited data usage (4 gig/month) and I don't want the Motocast to stream over the Verizon network to chew that usage.

Or connect phone to wifi, find App that streams movies and it will work. Apps don't care what network you're connected to. All you need is a data connection. Wifi, 4g, 3g. All will work

If you turn the phone on wifi. It uses wifi. I know the 4g stays on but it is connected to wifi as long as the wifi is showing in status bar and turns blue.

I have encountered a couple streaming apps that required the over-air connection, and would not allow wifi. They tend to be carrier supplied streaming media though.

I stand corrected, but it will notify you need over the air so you will know what network is being used. By the way : I'm jealous of those with 4g. I made it to Columbus few weeks ago and 4g is amazing. I live in the middle of nowhere and guarantee that I won't get 4g until the end of 2013

For in-your-own-house streaming, there is nothing that should even remotely use 3G/4G. It should all be over your own Wi-Fi simply because there is absolutely nothing out there with 3G/4G that has any knowledge of your home network.... they are completely separate networks. Devices trying to stream over 3G/4G wouldn't even be able to find or talk to the media server on your laptop.
As for vendor supplied apps... call it my natural distrust of Verizon and their ilk, but I shun their apps whenever possible.

Yeah, i'm coming to that conclusion too. I first went to update Verizon Navigator (per it stating it needs updated) and after installing it, I clicked on "Open" and it takes me right back to the Android Market to Open it again. Finally got it working...for about 2 minutes and it crashes. Blah.
