In laws have gas heat. When the furnace kicks on, they have a big smell of gas. Any quick tips or tricks or ideas to help them?

Yeah ..... have a professional check it ASAP.
Anytime there is a smell of gas it is nothing to mess around with.

What I figured. They shut off their furnace for the time being(live in a slightly warmer climate) and are using electric space heaters until they can get someone out there. Just thought I'd ask around in case it's something simple to repair before paying some the big bucks to come out.
They were going to wait until nearly Feb. to have someone look at it. We made them promise to have someone come out next week. They're on a fixed income,so they can't really afford a big repair right now. Looks like hubs and I may have to dip into savings to make sure it gets fixed ASAP!
Any idea what it is and what it could cost? New furnace required, etc?

They should be able to call their gas company to check it without a cost to them. They won't be able to fix anything that might require parts but they'll know if it will and what is necessary and lesson the chance of being taken advantage of.

Good point. Plus, I bet the gas company has people on call right now. A phone call to the company, someone will be out shortly. Like you said, they probably won't fix anything, and may very well shut the gas off until the furnace is fixed - but that's not a bad thing in this case.

Will that work if they have propane tanks on their property? So, they don't necessarily have a gas company, just someone that comes out and fills their tank when they need it.

If its not a utility probably not but a phone call to find out is free.

Yup! Do not mess around with gas leaks, and don't hesitate.

I would imagine that it could be any of 10 different things with a propane furnace, from modestly priced simple repairs, to replacement.
I have no idea what a propane furnace runs.
I would suppose that it depends on the efficiency of the furnace .... just like a gas furnace.

Thanks all! Luckily, my in laws were smart enough to shut off the furnace. Now, if they would just call for the repair NOW, I understand that money is a concern, but still.

There are tax incentives that expire today, unfortunately.
I do not know if they have been, or are expected to be extended.
