I think we will hear Shurm at some point this offseason (right around when we hire an OC) say something to the effect of "I have decided to concentrate on the HC and will leave the play calling to the new OC in order to take some of the load off my shoulders". Thus, making it HIS decision instead of Holmgren forcing the issue (although in reality, I am sure Holmgren is going to force the issue).

I recall reading somewhere shortly after they hired Shurmur that they were looking at OC's but none wanted to come here and not call plays.
I can't imagine any coordinator worthwhile will come here under that arrangement.
If Shurmur relinquishes playcalling duties, and Mike Sherman doesn't get a HC gig somewhere else, I would love to see him here. This would be a great setup for Shurmur. He will have three former HC's to school him.

Bdragon...that is all it takes and this really is not a big deal and won't have any affect on whom the Browns pursue as OC.
Like I said, if Holmgren is standing in front of Shurmur and says this is what I'm going to do and this is how it will work...I seriously doubt Shurmur is going to have much to say.

There's no need to "Force" anything...
U guys get way overworked about simple stuff...
We didn't hire an OC this past year because anyone we would consider wasn't available...Simple...
This year we WILL hire an OC...And it appears it may just be a good one...WHO CARES who calls the damn plays...
As Peen said...And u guys get so irate about this on gameday because of emotions...Plays are Plays...95% of em' will WORK if they are executed the way they should be...
Mour & I have talked about this...This team is not far away...Defensively Jauron has done an outstanding job with a young roster moving to a 4-3...FS is the Wild Card on this D...If we get a chance to obtain a REAL Center-Fielder...We will...But it's not a FS that will help this team stop running games...And THAT is our single biggest problem...The FIX???
Adding a DE that can seal the edge and get in the backfield... Adding an OLB that can seal the edge and Cover... GET WARD BACK HEALTHY...
Those 3 things will help immensely and CAN BE HAD this draft/FA period...
QB---This is the single most wide-open what do we do spot on this offense...Do we go after Flynn???...Do we try for Luck???...Do we move to 2 or 3 for Griffin...Or do we stick with McCoy???...Thanks BARKLEY...
WR---Obviously we need one...It WILL BE addressed...Only question is do we bring in a Jackson???...A Garcon or Bowe???...Or do we go Blackmon???...Not real high on 6' 1" WR's as high as 4...And lacking top-end speed...Then there's Wright...A SMURF with speed...Doesn't do much for a #1 WR to go with Little...Whatever we do will knock MoMass down the pecking order...He'd be a solid 3...And the further down the order we get Cribbs the better...He's on the field WAY 2 much as a WR and is part of the problem...Regardless...This will be addressed...
OL---Another spot that WILL BE ADDRESSED...Pashos has played his last game in Cleveland...
RB---Hillis is replaceable but we might as well just ink em' for 2 or 3 years and go with what we have with Jackson coming back...
We address those Offensive Positions and this Offense won't be stuck in 13 point a game territory...Addressing the Defense will go a long way in turning this team into a potential PLAYOFF team as soon as 2012...With as pathetic an offense as we had this year we were STILL IN 14 games...It doesn't take much to turn those CLOSE ones into WINS...
Go Browns!!!

I'm not sure which way you're going.
Holmgren said that they were going to hire an offensive coordinator after the season, but that he expected that Shurmur would continue to call plays.
If they hire an offensive coordinator and that coordinator calls the plays, that would be a change from what they had previously said.
Back up a little,, I never mentioned anything about Playcalling,, don't confuse the issue..
I'm saying that the reporter LIED.. or at the very least, he's MISINFORMING.
There is NO confusion over it.., NONE.,

I think you hit the nail on the head, on so many levels. We are young, and the pieces are starting to fall into place. It just does not happen over night.
Just throwing another name for OC- wasn't Bill Callahan under Gruden? I believe his contract is up with the jets. He could be an option.

1) The 95% stat.. Cmon man.. u just COMPLETELY made that up. I get ur point though. haha.
2) We get a RDE and offenses will FEAR our front 4. No doubt about it. This year's draft has some talent too. I'm on the Vinny Curry bandwagon, but there is also Mercilus.
3) In regards to a LB.. just give me a guy who has some speed, is good against the run, and has a tad bit of awareness. It doesn't have to be a first rounder, or even 2nd rounder.. just a guy that produces.. I like DQ @ MLB.. I don't want to move him. That leaves a OLB spot open for a new starter. Danny Trevathan? Sean Spence?
4) O-Line - I'd rather pick up someone in free agency.. even if we do have to pay a good bit.

Callahan was under Gruden with the Raiders. Then he was head coach of the Raiders when they played Tampa Bay in the Superbowl
Callahan was the guy I wanted last year. If he fits the WCO, I'd love Callahan. But I think he might be the Jets O-Coordinator next year.
Any of those three guys work with me though, but as I said, I think the issue might end up being over play calling. I'd also like Andy Reid or Mornwig if either of them get fired as a result of the Eagles disappointing 8-8 season

Oh give it a rest mac ..... there is no way that a coordinator calls the plays and then the head coach signals them in. That is an assistant coach and/or a backup QB job.
It ain't happening. If we do hire an offensive coordinator who calls plays, it will be done in the normal manner. To force the head coach into the middle would be damaging to his standing with the team, and would ensure his departure the same year. I don't think that Holmgren wants to push Shurmur into a position to fail so that he can go try to find his 3rd head coach in 4 years.

Also, why would you want to play Telephone to get the play in? I'd think you'd want the guy calling the play to just get it to the QB directly.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

That's not totally accurate. Holmgren said that they didn't hire an OC because they weren't enamored with any of their candidates, not that they were set on one particular guy who ended up being unavailable.

There are 32 OC jobs in the NFL. They're not easy to get. Someone will take the job even if they're not calling the plays.

It's Minute, and not significant at all.,., not even a little bit.. THey tried, did'nt find what they wanted, made the decision to stay with Shurmur as HC and OC. He also said that they will probably hire an OC this year and that Shurmur would probably continue to call the plays. That of course, could change depending on who they hire.
I'm not sure what's so damn hard to understand,,, the reporter in this piece flat out misinformed the readers and on top of that, he's about 45 days late with this story..
You and a few others are trying thier best to discredit my comment about the lies and misinformation that reporters report, but then something like this pops up within days of my comment about it and the only way to refute it is to pick on minute details that don't change a damn thing...

Sure its significant. One says that they gave Shurmur the job, but really they wanted somebody else who just wasn't available. The other says that they thought Shurmur was the best of all the candidates for the job.
If they were fixated on one guy but he wasn't available then why did they interview other people for the job?

mac... what you're missing here is that method gives the HC a job that doesn't take an HC to do. Anyone can relay the calls to the QB, the quarterbacks coach as has been mentioned or even the backup QB.
If you're trying to relieve the HC of some of his responsibilities so he can be a better HC then why saddle him with a duty that is empty and valueless?

NO, it's not significant at all.. Doesn't matter if they interviewed 10 people.. if they had thier hearts set on one guy and he wasn't availble, they had to make a choice,, Hire someone that was thier second or third choice or go with Shumur.. They chose Shurmur to do both jobs..
Again, give it up,, the reporter lied.. like it or not. he did

I really believe this with all my heart.. Last year, they wanted someone as the OC.. they didn't name him.., But he wasn't availble for some reason.
My thought is, this year, they go after whoever that was and if they get him and he wants to call the plays, Shurmur will go with it.
My feelings are that whether or not Shurmur calls the plays next year is directly related to who they get as an OC....
I don't think they will hire someone they don't feel is a quality OC..you may disagee, but what's new about that
Wait for it,, food reference is on it's way

it won't matter.. Holmgren has Shurmur as his head coach.. anyone below the todem pole of HC is below and nothing more..
If they were that good.. they would already be a coach.

That would mean that we could never hire a quality coach. I don't buy the "Shurmur would be intimidated by a strong OC" argument. if any guy should bring in the best possible people it is Shurmur. If he wins, he is rock solid in his job. No one is going to "show him up" from a coordinator position. Holmgren hired him, and he's not going to dump him because a coordinator came in and did a good job. That's the whole point. You want your coordinators to do great work for you.

I suppose my feeling is that if Shurm needs an OC (or isn't good enough to be OC) how is it that he is qualified to be HC?

b/c he has other responsibilities than just call plays and run an offense. Plus he needs help teaching his young offensive players the game; that includes in practice AND during the game.

Learning to be a HC, teaching your offensive system to young guys, help with development of players, game plan etc IS TOO MUCH for a first year guy and probably most guys as most HC's have coordinators.
Get a strong OC and some next level talent and see what we have!

He certainly didn't look all that intimidated by having three former Head Coaches running around the building (rhodes, jauron and holmgren)
I, like you, believe he'd want to hire a guy that could do the job, if that meant, someone better than he is (or perceived as such) then so be it.

I still don't like Shurmur. I lost faith in him in those last few games where he made some questionable calls. but at the end of the day could care less really.. I just want to win.

Because a Head Coach has completely different duties than a coordinator has.
I have long argued that this is why so many successful coordinators, who have won Super Bowls and coordinated some of the league's best offenses and defenses, fall completely on their faces when they become head coaches.
As a coordinator, you handle one unit. You prepare part of the team to play a game.
As the Head Coach, you handle the whole team. You manage your coaches. You balance the abilities and capabilities of both the offense and defense. You handle the gameplan, and finalize what that plan will look like. You are the final vote on what form that gameplan ultimately takes. You settle the debates between coaches and units as to the gameplan. You handle interplayer problems. You set the agenda. You create the environment for others to succeed. You create the vision for your team, and enforce it both to the players, and to, and through, your subordinate coaches. The Head Coach must be the guy who sets the agenda, and keeps everyone else on track.
This is completely different from being a coordinator. It is big picture vs brushstroke. As a coordinator, you do what the Head Coach tells you to do, and the Head Coach approves or sends back your gamneplans for changes based upon his requirements and ideals.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I agree. My wishlist would be Morhinweg and Sherman at the top. But, I don't see Sherman going back to the NFL (he'll find a soft-landing spot in college if he wants it) and I don't see Marty getting fired (Philly media likes to overreact - they went 8-8 and Andy Reid has a great track record).

Lots of HC openings! The potential list could seriously shrink or at least we will have a long wait until teams finish up their season and the HC search can commence.

Shurmur just had a press conference and said that they will hire an offensive coordinator and that, "I want to get the best guy I can and if he's outstanding at calling plays, hey I want to win games."
