http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2007/03/browns_sign_bengals_dt_smith_t.htmlBrowns sign Bengals DT Smith to offer sheet Posted by Tony Grossi March 09, 2007 14:39PM Categories: Breaking News, Browns The Browns today signed defensive tackle Shaun Smith, a restricted free agent of the Cincinnati Bengals, to an offer sheet, according to a league source. The Bengals have seven days to match the offer. Terms have not been disclosed. Smith entered the NFL in 2003 as an undrafted free agent from South Carolina, so there would be no draft-pick compensation to the Bengals if they elect not to match the offer. Smith, 6-2 and 325 pounds, was with Dallas and New Orleans before joining Cincinnati off waivers during the 2004 season. In the Bengals' 4-3 defensive system, Smith was a backup tackle behind starters John Thornton and Sam Adams. The Browns see him as their nose tackle of the future.

Forgive me, but I think player-specific signings are large enough news that they qualify for their own threads. We'll be talking about this for the next 7 days and it doesn't need to be buried in a thread about a list of people who have visited Berea.

I just don't know how we can say he is the NT of our future. I mean, what's the guy got? How old is he? How much starting experience? Is he any good? Does he have the talent? I just don't know anything about this guy.

so because u know nuttin about the guy means Opie can't see him as our future NT?? *LOL* ... OK .. Ammo ... if we see him as a starter its more than likely a contract that the bungles won't wanna match for a back up .. now maybe they see him as a starter at some point in the near future as Sam Adams isnt getting any younger .. no clue about this guy other than he plays a position of MAJOR NEED on this team ... DL ... so heres to hopin hes ours ... worse case we have some much needed depth ... best case we have a starting NT for the foreseeable future .. or until we have time to aquire a REAL GOOD ONE anyhow .. bout time we got a DLman .. any DLman ..

You can gather that contract is such they won't want to match it..well at least early on ..they might..but what they tendered him was so low I doubt if they do match it.

I 'm not clear on all the workings of the offer sheet system, are other teams allowed to make offers as well? Or do they have to wait until the Bengals match, then make a higher offer?

Once he signed the offer from us..if they match it , they retain him if not he's ours..no one else gets a shot since he signed ours first.

This could be the thrid free agent we've stolen from within the division. So not only our we adding, we're subtracting from our rivals. I like it!

Well I decided to figure some stuff out on him, so get off my back, LOL.
Here's a scouting report:
Full Name: Shaun Jamel Smith Born: August 19, 1981 Brooklyn, NY Height: 6-2 Weight: 315 lbs. Age: 25 Pos: DT Experience: 3 years College: South Carolina
Comment: Smith has good size and athletic skills. He reacts with above-average play recognition to blocking patterns. Against the run, he is a short-area player who has some functional strength at the point of attack. He has above average technique. He can hold his ground against some double-team blocks, allowing his linebacker to stay clean and play inside-out to ball carriers. He is an upfield power rusher in the passing game. But Smith struggles to disengage from blocks and lacks quality range. He isn't ver explosive with his hands. He struggles to play laterally down the line of scrimmage. He lacks good initial quickness to get on the edge of blockers and close on quarterbacks. He has a limited array of pass-rush countermoves.

Here's a key even though the rest sounds like he's a underachiever:
Against the run, he is a short-area player who has some functional strength at the point of attack. He has above average technique. He can hold his ground against some double-team blocks, allowing his linebacker to stay clean and play inside-out to ball carriers.
He has better techniques..occupying or commanding a DT is something we need..

I think he's closer to 325... and from the description above, sounds like a 3-4 NT to me.

True, he really does. I hope the coaches and Big Ted can turn this kid into something. If he has above average technique, that's a great sign because using your low center of gravity helps big time.

U made the statement not me bro .. *L*
and if that scouting report is true .. he looks like a much much better NT than DT .. his skill set isn't great for any position cause u never want anyone who is limited in range but his STRENGTHS are right along the lines of what u want for a NT ..
Attack do u have any contract details???

No..not that U care Thats not my area..lol heres what I do know: Because he’s an undrafted free agent tendered at $850,000, the Bengals would get no compensation for losing Smith.
That was from their website.

Really liking the moves so far... hope the Bengals can't match.

I was reading they are trying to restructure some other players and they don't like doing that to vets..I would guess Opie should know their cap limits and set a price while not too high for us , but make it annoying for Bungal GM to want to match ..and since he's like the third DT..it would seem unlikely they would do it.

Cool... so they have seven days to match... can they decline to match sooner, or do we have to wait a week to find out?

They can match at anytime, but we may have to wait a week to find out if they are not going to match.

I believe so yes. I think they would have to do so in writing to the league office, but then it would be effective immediately, yes.

Thats exactly why I think they'll match. If he had an offer from some other division I think they let him go but I'll be surprised if they let him come here. This'll be interesting.

• DT Shaun Smith, Cincinnati (compensation: none): Just a big, ol' 325-pound anchor who doesn't move all that well but who won't be moved, either. His numbers will never be very impressive, as evidenced by just 44 tackles and no sacks in 34 games, but he will eat up blockers inside and allow linebackers to flow to the football. Occasionally, he'll even get a little penetration. He can be a solid No. 3 tackle in some team's rotation.

I don't know much about the guy.
I will say that we really need DL help, but not being able to start on the porous interior DL of the Bengals doesn't exactly thrill me about his prospects here.

FWIW, on "the other board" there´s a Bengal labeling Smith as "very good", even saying he´s their best run stuffer.....he´s POed and thinks they´ll match the offer

But they're playing a 4-3.
All we need him for is to demand double-teams and eat 'em up.
As that report that I posted read, at 325 lbs. he doesn't move very well but won't be moved either. That could be of some use in the middle for us.
I hope so anyways.

is he any worse then big al who didn't get much of an offer from us?
We're trying to throw the ball downfield and he checked the ball down to Trent Richardson and the Indians on the choice.

I wish we had kept McKinnley. With Simon Fraser at the left end, McKinnley on the right and Big Ted in the middle we had The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon & Theodore). Now we've got bupkis.

I hope the Bengals don't match....I mean we would have signed an O-lineman, a RB, and D-lineman all with potential to start......who in the world are we going to draft

Good one PPE!
Let's hope that Opie has big plans in the draft for our DL.................I feel that is one of his major focus points at this time!
Hopefully two OL..........and two DL in the draft.
Maybe one more of each with FA!
Man, talk about a team that is ready to turn it around.................let's just do it now!

i dont want to get chastised for starting a new thread on it.... but I saw Kevin Kaesvaharn was visiting with us today. Decent back up for Brodney and Pool. Some people have been disappointed with our FA, but I think savage has done well, he got one elite player and now has signed some very good depth and keeps trying to bring in solid depth. Believe it or not, this could actually be our best FA yet! he Browns entertained free agent S Kevin Kaesviharn on Thursday. Arizona is out of the running for Kaesviharn after signing Terrence Holt to a $15 million deal. Kaesviharn would likely be a reserve behind Brodney Pool and Sean Jones in Cleveland. The Saints also have interest. Source: Cincinnati Enquirer Related: Cardinals, Browns, Saints rotoworld.com
