Good depth signing - hopefully Ted can help groom him. He has the best attribute of a 3-4 NT; he's hard to move.

Sounds like the anti-Jason Fisk

That he does...

Attack...The Tender Cinci gave him means nothing now...

We offered him a contract...They either MATCH or LOSE...Don't matter if it's 5 years and 100M...

Sounds fishy given that Cincy has to decline to match first, and they hadn't even acknowledged receiving the offter sheet as of 5:00pm. But who knows...

He signed a offer sheet with us.....I doubt Cincy would react today...they have a week to think things over.

I agree... and this from the article above:

"It’s not known if the Bengals have officially received the undisclosed sheet from Cleveland because the Bengals don’t comment on offer sheets until a decision is reached."

And:

"The conventional wisdom is the Bengals won’t match for a guy whose playing time dropped this past season and the club is trying not to re-structure the contracts of veterans in the face of what they say is a tight salary cap. The offer isn’t believed to contain a “poison pill,” that would make it unmatchable but given the Browns hope the Bengals don’t match, the sheet is probably in the $1.5-2 million per year range."

As much as we rip the Bengals, they aren't a bunch of dunces over there. They are going to take the time allotted to digest the offer.

With him being third on their depth chart I can't see them matching...

From what I've read on here it sounds like he could be a solid NT... you just need a big ol body that can eat blocks at nose... and it sounds like that's exactly what this guy is... good move!

Not to put anybody down with this comment, but 85% of what you read here is a big pile of crap.

If Savage likes him, fine, but I wouldn't take what is read here as something to bank on....and that includes me, as hard as that is to believe!

well I was basing it more on the 'reports'... not fan comments... but yeah... I trust savage... and like I said, most of the reports say his big... doesn't move well but won't be moved... which is fine for me in a NT.

You don't need a high profile superstar NT to have a good defense. If Shaun Smith stops the run well and commands a double team, and our run defense is solid with him then good, he's not gonna be a stat player. If not then it's not like he's a first round bust or anything, no big deal.

lol, I knew what you meant, just couldn't resist... The guy can play corner too, just wonder at the move if we made it... he would have to come cheaper than Russell, no? That's the only way it makes sense to me seeing as he's a career backup.

I think I found what your friend was talking about... this from an article on NFL.com:

"Also, the Browns have signed Bengals defensive tackle Shaun Smith to a four-year offer sheet. The Bengals have seven days to match the deal or they'll lose the restricted free agent, who would follow offensive tackle Eric Steinbach to Cleveland."

It's a four year Offer Sheet, not contract.

Sounds to me like that would make it difficult for the Cats to match if they're in cap trouble.

The Tender Cinci gave him means nothing now...

I know but the tender helps give a little insight how high Phil is going to price Smith..
I'm thinking in the 2.7range..would cincy match that for a backup DT?
The article said in the 1.5-2mill range..we'll see..I have a hunch they're not gonna wait 7 days to do something..

Ummm you guys can have him..He basically slipped to #4 on the depth chart last season and we can find a replacement for him in the draft..

He can play pretty decently at times....

if the bengals cut his PT.. i doubt they match the offer.. why match an offer on someone who isn't producing the way you want..

Go ahead Phil, and get the big guy his jersey and new number..

Smith actually might be a good signing for our 3-4 scheme.

He is miscast as a "penetrating, disruptive" DT in the 4-3. He appears to be better suited to duty as a "plug up the middle" immovable NT in a 3-4.

This offer sheet thing is annoying. It's a waiting game and I HATE waiting. I just want to know, will they keep him, or will they let him go.

Someone PM me when it's all figured out, this thread is worthless till then.....

JK, I'll keep checking this thread, who am I kidding.

I just hope we are still going after a DE as well. Even if we get this guy we need 1, maybe two DE's.

Man I'll tell u what...

The longer these DT's like Robaire Smith and Ian Scott are out there...The lower their contracts are gonna be...

If I'm Savage I go sign BOTH these guys TODAY...That gives us 2 Ends and a NT in this dude from Cincy...That's a REVAMPED Line before even touchin' the draft...

Sign Mahan and Hood too...And be done...

This team can take MAJOR strides this year with EXPERIENCE on the 2 lines...We got it with Fraley and Steinbach...So much so that a Rook at RG would be just fine...And a Thomas at LT...

I wish we had kept McKinnley.
With Simon Fraser at the left end, McKinnley on the right and Big Ted in the middle we had The Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon & Theodore).

Now we've got bupkis.

Did Theodore and Simon sign with another label?

simon I think is signed with us as an ERFA like this smith kid... alvin hasn't resigned with us or that I know of has met with any teams.
