And technically that's true.

However, if Manning does not pass a physical and is released after being paid his roster bonus, then it would accelerate. (amounts depend upon when he is released, and over how many years the bonus could be pro-rated)

Yes, that is true... but that has no effect on them keeping him, which was the point of the question

I still don't see them paying him a $28 million bonus unless they are 100% sure that he can come back as close to100% healthy as is humanly possible, and play this year.

If he is released now they accelerate his signing bonus. If they keep him they retain the pro-rated signing bonus, ($20 million divided by 5 years, so $4 million per year) plus add the $28 million roster bonus, and add his $7.4 million salary on top of that.

Now, the one thing that I have absolutely no clue on is how the guarantees work. His deal was reported to have $54.4 million guaranteed, including his $20 million signing bonus. I would assume that salaries and not bonuses are guaranteed in some fashion .... because those could still be spread out if necessary ..... but I'm not sure how that works.

Well, it is because of how it all fits into the cap is why I am certain that the ONLY thing that will matter is whether or not they believe he can come back healthy.

If they have significant doubt, then yea, I can see them releasing him. I can also see them waiting until after June 1 to do that, though that means that they'd pay the option bonus.

yeah, but it's a contract thing between the player and the club so if both sides agree, can't they negotiate a lesser amount? Making it easier to stomach the risk?

Didn't he agree to restructure his contract before so that they could keep Harrison? I don't see why he wouldn't agree to do that again. He isn't as greedy as the typical athlete imo.

Was it to keep harrison or someone else.. don't remember, but yeah, he did that once before.

The difference this time may be that he's nearing the end of his career. And with his Coach getting the axe and the front office in turmoil after the Polians were canned, he may just say,,, no.. I want it all.

But if he truly wants to stay and the Colts truly want him to stay, there is probably a number both sides will live with.. and I have NO IDEA what that number would be..

And that's only if he is healthy. Which will be hard to tell before the deadline date. How much healing can a neck do between now and whatever the deadline date is (March 6th or something)?

If he can play, he's going to play for Indy I assume...

The question is WHEN will they KNOW that he can or cannot?

If it's at that Bonus deadline and they say "we'll we still aren't sure" You almost HAVE to cut him right?

I understand what he's done for the franchise and all that, but they say it's a business, and I think if they sat down with Manning instead of fighting about it over Twitter or the media then it wouldn't be that big of a "falling out" per say...

I think the Colts are taking Luck no matter what happens with Manning, they almost have too...

Awkward situation.

Part of me just wishes Manning could retire and it be over, but I think like Favre, he's a competitor that still believes he has something left to give and possibly win another title, I don't think his public opinion will crash as severely as Favre's did, but if he goes out there and takes that one hit, and doesn't get back up for basically the first time in his career... Eh...

Well, yeah, I guess that's true. But wouldn't making the deal palatable for both sides just in case he can't play again make a degree of sense?

Nope. The Colts are drafting Luck. It makes no sense to keep Manning if it is unclear whether he can play or not.

I agree they are drafting Luck.. But I think it makes a ton of sense to hang onto Manning.. A slow transition is better if you can do it. (ala Favre to Rodgers in GB)

It makes sense to have a slow transition when the guy you are drafting is not prepared for the NFL.

OK, your assuming that Luck is ready for the NFL... Was Rodgers? funny thing is, we'll never really know will we.

But back when he was drafted, most felt that Alex Smith was..

Point is, do you, as a team owner, wanna take that bet when you don't have to?

I don't.

So is the general consensus that Peyton Manning will not play another down in the NFL?

That's my guess.

Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

You can only guess. But the recent track record has shown that most guys are ready to step in and play. Newton, Dalton, Ryan, Flacco, Bradford, Stafford, Ponder, Freeman.

Wow tough question. Myself I think the Colts will cut him and he will sign with another team with all sorts of outs/options. Doesnt mean he will play again but I think hes going to try.

actually there were a ton of people who felt that Alex Smith was not ready to start in the NFL.

he was coming from a spread-offense and there were all kinds of questions about being able to read a defense, going under center, picking up the playbook, etc. and this was before the dam broke on the spread offenses too, so NFL teams were likely not as prepared to help him make the transition.

One year for Newton and Dalton,, little early to tell. Flacco, ya know, he's got plenty of detractors. Jury is still out on Bradford. Stafford looks like the real deal, Ponder I don't know about and Freeman wasn't all that and a bag of chips.

Anyway, putting all that aside, if you don't have to go into the season with a rookie, why would you.

Especialy if you got a guy like Payton Manning...

because honestly, it would be ridiculous for the Colts to go with Peyton.

they should either say that their contending window (despite last season) is now and go all-in. trade Luck for as much help as they can get to open that window for Peyton to win another superbowl for them.

or

they should start the rebuilding process. make sure that they are building around their newfound centerpiece and start building to open up their window in 2-4 years when he's matured enough to lead them there.

going halfway sort of stalls either plan.

I agree with I believe all 3 WR being FA and the total ? mark over Mannings head the only real choice to them is to move on and reload at the QB pos now.
They either totally handicap themselves for years to come or just start freash and reload over those couple of years.

Actually, Freeman is kind of going through the normal development of a young QB, He started out with promise, with a a decent rookie year. He completed about 55% of his passes, and had more INT than TDs, (10-18) His 2nd year was much, much, much better. he completed 61% of his passes for 25 TD and only 6 INT. He averaged 7.28 yards/pass attempt, and had 48 plays of 20+ yards in only 474 attempts. That's a really nice ratio. He had a fabulous sophomore year.

This was his 3rd year, and he improved his completion percentage to almost 63%, but had fewer big plays, and only 16 TD passes against 22 INT. I know that he had injuries to his thumb and shoulder, and I would bet that hurt his game quite a bit, especially the deep game, but I don't think that any were long term serious injuries.

I would gladly take Freeman over anyone we have on our roster.

Wow - you give Freeman a "pass" because he is only a 3 year player, going through the normal development of a young quarterback..........

Yet you dump on McCoy? With all the things that transpired during his so far 2 year career? See - I just don't understand that thought process.

And let me RE-STATE: I am not a Colt lover. It just, simply, amazes me that he - Colt - is held to a standard that you hold no one else to. It limits your credibility when you make posts like this.

I agree that McCoy hasn't reached his bar as far as how good he can be in this offense. The question is how high is his ceiling? If neither Luck nor RGIII are there at 4, I think I'd just prefer to keep McCoy and Wallace this year and just accumulate as much talent as possible. I think you should improve your team as much as possible when you draft. I think Luck and RGIII would both improve our QB talent significantly. If they're not there, then our other positions can be improved significantly.

Look at Freeman's 2nd year. 25 TD passes to 6 INT. Over 7 yards per attempt. What has McCoy done that is even close to that?

Freeman had thumb and shoulder injuries this year. He still improved his short range accuracy. He had issues with other throws. There was a physical reason for that ... and those reasons should be fully healed come training camp.

Freeman does not have the physical limitations that McCoy has. He had an injury plagued year. That can happen to a QB.

If some on this board get their way, we'll never find out.

Injuries to Freeman, some say - so ignore Freeman's td to int. ratio they say.

Colt had a shoulder injury - but we should ignore that in looking at stats?

All the other stuff has been discussed at length (team, new offense, etc etc etc), no sense going there again.

IF - IF RG is there at 4, take him. I have no problem with that.

Again - I am NOT a "Colt is the guy" person. I just like to throw some fairness in when discussing Colt - and some don't like that I guess.

Great,, they can become the Rams..

Seriously, If I'm the owner of the Colts, I do my best not to "couch' Andrew Luck. That means, keep Manning if possible (I wouldn't want to pay the 28mill without knowing he can play) then use the rest of this draft and the next to reload.

Manning gives a smooth transition to the whole thing.

But that's just my opinion

Ahh, it doesn't matter... Manning may not even be able to play again.. he just may be done..

probably alot more then you think. Im on the page as well if the FO thinks RGIII is the guy. Theres a few vocal people that like to bash Colt relentlessly not sure why either to just bash the guy or advance their cause of we must get this other guy but they are there.
Most the people on here Ive read are in the middle on the whole thing me included. This much I do believe the FO has a plan and I have no idea what their steps are going to be to implement that plan. Draft a QB this year QB next year QB FA or we have the QB already.
If nothing else it gives us fans a reason to debate all the possiblities.

Freeman showed his capabilities in his 2nd year, which was a spectacular year. 25 TDs. Only 6 INT.

Neither of our guys has had a season even remotely approaching that level.

yes. that's the point. they develop, cash in a few of these cheap top10 pick guys the next couple of years while Luck is learning, and let alot of youngsters play and grow with him so they are veterans when he is.

you take your lumps now to be a better team later. now, I would make sure that you do what you can to invest in OL first to make sure he doesn't take a beating, but it is a good way to become a contender again.

worst case for the Colts:

they keep Peyton and draft Luck. they don't have enough weapons for Peyton to compete, but sign a bunch of stop-gaps trying to get there anyway. Peyton gets them to 9-7 to 12-4 every year but cannot win more than 1 game in the playoffs. Peyton retires in 3 years and now Luck has 1 more year on his contract, they have few good young players around him, and they have to scratch their team out again.

And.....................they finished 4-12 that year. Thanks.

You love to toss out qb stats - here with Freeman, in other threads with Newton...........yet you never mention win loss records.

I think that he either plays for the Colts or know one at all ... It's fun to speculate otherwise, but the only way I don't foresee the Colts resigning him is if he can not play.

I don't think Manning wants to end his career as anything other then QB for the Colts.

I also think that he feels there is unfinished business to do, but the body has to be willing and we all can be witness to that ... Just live long enough and it will be an issue at some point to us all.
