Why do we view Childress as an awful OC again?

Because like Jauron, chilly wasnt a good HC lol. I would rather have Mike Sherman, been a fan of his for a long time but I would not complain with Chilly. The guy is a good OC and a good teacher.

From reading the article in the link he posted...Sounds like it's going to be a done deal...never know thou...

With Sherman wanting to be a HC so fast..I'm not sure if I would want that hire..Here for a season then gone...

I know that's common...But it sure would be nice to get a good fit here and have them stay for 3 or more seasons...jmo...

The Article crfs posted says that Sherman is being considered as OC in Miami.

So I'm wondering, just because he's being considered, why would anyone think that he's out in Clevelnad for essentially the same job.

Now, if it's between a HCing job and our OC... Yeah,, I get that. makes perfect sense.

Just my opinion here....even with Shurmer backing off the play calling issue, I don't think many are buying it.

I don't think many guys with experience are going to want to come in here and negotiate over who is going to call plays.

It is also a possible drawback we are keeping the same O. I know it is a WCO, but somehow I have to feel Shurmer has massaged it in to his version and it isn't a stock, out of the box O. If you take a OC position you want to do what you have always envisioned. Not something someone else envisioned or be there as OC and have the HC call the plays. How's that going to get you promoted to the next level??

My guess is we'll get some low level QB coach who is attracted to the title and money even if they are more or less Shurmers marionette.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Over analysis there Peen..

1. If the man said he'd give up playcalling, why o why would you think otherwise?

2. WCO,, NCO,,, whatever it's called, the Head Coach, GM and President are on board with it, it's not going anywhere.. So, why would they even think to interview a potential OC that doesn't already have a handle on it.. So thats not a reason to shy away either for the right guy.

3. Woo is us, we're in a cold climate, we don't have a dome, we've been loosers for 12 years..

Those are reasons to come here and be the guy that turns it around..

What value is it to be the OC of the Patriots.. or The Payton Manning led Colts. with all that talent,, you could almost phone it in.

not here,, this is gonna take work.. exactly what a coach wants..

If I was a guy in line for an OC job and I was a WCO kinda guy.. I'd first check to see if the powers in berea are serious. having found out they are, I'd rush to this job..

and that,, is JMO

Childress never called plays for Philadelphia. He got hired by the Vikings and was terrible at calling plays.

That's probably because his QB's were Tavaris Jackson and the ghost of Brett Favre.

Brett Favre actually played pretty well his first year in Minnesota (33 TD's, 7 INT's) but everything fell apart his second year when he got mad at Childress for his poor play-calling.

1. Childress interviewed for the Dolphins OC job last offseason and lost out on that job. Brian Daboll won that job.
2. Lots of play-calling issues he had in Minny (Adrian Peterson even calling him out on it.) Though he was HC too when he called plays.
3. Didn't have play calling duties in Philly because that was Reid's job at the time.
All that being said, he never did get a chance to be an OC calling plays rather than HC. He could be a good call. Just not alot of overwhelming evidence to back that up from his history.

1. Sherman took the 28th ranked Texans offense to 14th in 2007 (his first year as OC there).
2. Sherman was Holmgren's hand-picked OC in Seattle before GB stole him back to be their HC. GB was pretty darn good on offense those years and alot of credit went to Sherman (not sure how much was truly him).

Those are the main reasons I prefer Sherman, but we'll see what happens.

You must've missed this part of my post...

That's weird because he hasn't spent any time at our training facility with our head coach. And now, what do you know...

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Sherman is in South Florida today, presumably to finalize details on a deal that will make him the Dolphins’ new offensive coordinator.

yet La Confora is saying the Browns are in play for Sherman. So, presumably might be a presumption that is wrong (Miami does have reasons to be a better fit though - better existing offensive talent, lesser defenses in division, etc.).

Is it possible that he just doesn't want to come here and it has nothing to do with the coach or the FO? Just doesn't want to come here?

Just because we don't get the guy everyone's talking about doesn't mean we aren't trying or that we're failing. We don't know what's going on.

Or it could be someone we have never heard of.

Never discount that possibility, especially with this front office.

Aslong as it's not someone promoted from within...

Or a lower assistant (Like a QB Coach) that would be a first time Coordinator...

And usually, you'd want somone maybe that's worked with/under Shurmur before, But IMO that's the LAST thing I want...

Because they didn't have the pieces and Brett Favre was absolutely terrible. If Favre got upset, then that is Favre's problem, not Childress.

And who says Chilly is going to call plays anyway? I'm pretty sure there is still a very good chance that PS is calling plays.

Sounds like it.

To be very fair to Childress, for what Pat described in his press conference, Chilly has done before. Even if he hasn't called plays as an OC, he has crafted game plans and the like before at an extremely high level.

I'm excited for what this could possibly mean.

Brad Childress closing in on Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator position, says NFL source
Published: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 9:25 PM Updated: Thursday, January 26, 2012, 9:58 PM
Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

A lengthy history as peers on the Philadelphia Eagles staff could be helping Brad Childress land the Browns' offensive coordinator position under head coach Pat Shurmur.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- With Mike Sherman close to becoming offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, former Vikings coach Brad Childress is the frontrunner for the Browns' vacancy at that position, a league source told The Plain Dealer.

The Browns had narrowed their choices to Sherman, the former Packers coach, and Childress, the former Vikings coach, the source said. But Sherman spent Thursday with the Dolphins and came close to taking the job, where he would replace former Browns coordinator Brian Daboll.

That means Childress -- the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia from 2003-05 when Pat Shurmur was quarterbacks coach there -- will likely become the Browns first coordinator under Shurmur. The hiring could happen in the next few days.

Shurmur was his own coordinator in 2011 and called the plays. The Browns finished 29th in offense and 30th in points per game, scoring just one more point (218) than the 1999 expansion team.

Shurmur and Childress spent seven years together on the Eagles staff under Andy Reid before Childress left to take over as head coach of the Vikings from 2006-10.

But if Childress is hired, will Shurmur relinquish his play-calling duties?

Shurmur said during his season-ending press conference that he'd be willing to do that if the right coordinator came along. He acknowledged that he's good friends with Childress and respects his ability.

Childress, 55, did not call the plays under Reid in Philadelphia, but was on the staff for three consecutive NFC title games and a trip to the Super Bowl in 2004. Childress was the quarterbacks coach from 1999-2002, as quarterback Donovan McNabb earned three of his six trips to the Pro Bowl.

Childress was fired by the Vikings after 10 games of 2010 season after going 39-35 in his four-plus years, and 1-2 in postseason. The Browns did not interview him for the coordinator job last season.

Both Childress and Sherman are represented by agent Bob LaMonte, who also represents Browns President Mike Holmgren and Shurmur. web page

Sounds fine to me. Possible OC's I've wanted was Callahan from the Jets, Clements, Sherman, Childress, and Zorn.

We got one of those guys. Jauron had a tough time in Buffalo or Detroit (wherever he coached), and he had a good year hear last year. I'm hoping Childress will mean the same thing.

Best thing to me is that we aren't signing Wipple. Now we'll get an experienced OC to go with our experienced DC.

I know, he was just my top candidate last year for OC when he was with the Jets. Him going to Dallas sort of put him outta the running. Do guys ever switch teams then get hired at a higher position during the same couple week offseason?

That's what I'd think. Sorta why I figured we wouldn't get Callahan. You know he's coached a superbowl with the Raiders? Head Coach and everything

I personally wanted them to take a look at Carmichael in New Orleans but I am fine with Childress for the simple reason that this is the first time we have had an experienced Offensive and Defensive coordinator in a long While. Let's face it, the more time Shurmer has to dedicate to Game planning, strategizing, and focusing on what's going on during the game the better. I am relieved that he will not be calling play's at this point. I think Childress will do fine too because he doesn't have to be the Head Coach. Everyone has a role now and each can be responsible for the development and progress for their respective Units. Childress has 16 years as an OC under his belt, and maybe the year off gave him a new perspective or drive to refine himself. Experienced Coordinators on both sides of the ball might just be what we need to speed up the process and really establish the system.
