With all this draft talk, I was just thinking about what are realistic trade down options people on this board believe could happen in different scenarios depending on who is drafted in front of us. My cousin and I were talking about this one today and we both kind of like it (not saying it will happen, but it will be fun to start a discussion).
Let me know your thoughts/opinions on this trade...or post your own!
Let's say (I'm starting to believe that this is what is going to happen) that:
Indy takes Luck Rams take Blackmon Minn trades down with someone to jump in front of us to take RG3
That would leave Kalil on the board whom I think could be trade bait to someone who is in dire need of a LT. Detroit's starting LT just tore his bicep muscle and is scheduled to turn 35 come the start of 2012.
What if Detroit offered us a deal like Atlanta did last year (2012 - 1st, 2nd, and 4th...2013 - 1st and 4th) to drop us from 4th to 23rd (giving us the 22nd and 23rd overall picks) so that they could take their starting LT for the next 10 years to protect Stafford???
I'm not saying that the "NFL Draft Point Value Chart" is the end-all, be-all system everyone uses to move draft picks around, but the numbers add up to be right on point.
I would be more than willing to trade down if this was offered to us. We would have the option to then trade back up into the teens if we had someone targeted that we wanted (let's say the Browns have Michael Floyd rated higher than Blackmon for example, not saying it's true, just an example). It would also give us another first next year to potentially use as trade bait to take Barkley if Colt does not appear to be the answer...Or we could stay put and have 4 picks in the top 55ish.
Thoughts??

Unless I'm sure the guy at 4 is my guy and will become a top of the line NFL player at a valuable position of need I make the trade.
The prospects, the salaries, the amount of good players we still need.
Add the fact that we have a great GM who is good at hitting on these Day 1/2 guys and I'm all for it.

I'd consider doing that if I get all that (1st, 2nd and 3rd this year) and thier 1st and 3rd and a 5th next season on top.
that way, I got something to trade to move back up because I really don't want to drop that low.

I trade down. We need to accumulate talent. Having more picks in the early rounds will help do that. And with this draft I don't think the talent gap is that huge from pick four to pick seventeen (for example).

i think the talent gap is huge from #4 to #6 even, but since we would be using that talent at a position of less value (RT), i would also make the jump
i'd really prefer it to be a team with a pick before Cinci though as i would like lamar miller and see them taking him (assuming Richardson doesn't fall that far, which I do not think he will)

Only an imbecile would move up 19 spots to take a LT,and Millen is now on TV. Some scenerios are so far fetched that they don't warrant the time or energy to be discussed, this is one of those.

yeah, it's like moving up 21 spots to take a WR. and it's not as if LT > WR or anything.

You're smarter then that. It's never happened,probably never will happen.If a team gives up that much,it willbe for a playmaker,and LT's aren't playmakers.

most teams value LT as the 2nd most important position on offense. i would imagine that could warrant a trade-up. no, it's not as much of a fun sell to the fans of the team on the trade-up and I cannot think of an obvious example off-hand where a team traded up real high. here's one with the Packers going from 14th to 7th in 1985. man, that's a long time ago and there's got to be a better example since then: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=14...BAJ&pg=6724,10569067

ok, found one more significant 1st round trade up more recently and I won't go back further for now.
Philly traded up with SF to go from #28 to #16 to select Shawn Andrews in 2004.

What did Philly give up?
Never mind, they added a 2nd round pick, #56 overall.
Not much of a bounty to drop that far.

IMO.. up top it's a two man draft.. Luck and Kahlil.
I'd be happy to trade down to maybe Miami's spot at 9 depending on what we got for the 4 spot.

I had this posted in the 4 and 22 thread but think it belongs here better.
I wish there was a way to trade for Dez Bryant. Dallas has Austin and Robinson. I would love to trade our pick to Washington get theres and an extra 2nd or third(whatever the draft value is) Trade our pick to Dallas for Bryant and Next years first. Dallas needs secondary help and Kirkpatrick would fit nicely in that slot for Dallas as would top tier OL. We would then have the
14)?? 22)Burfict Whatever picks from Washington to move for RG Dallas next years first and Bryant to move from 14 to 6 Wishful thinking I know.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I think management gets the idea this team needs a "star" type pick this year to get some excitement back. I heard a reporter tell Holmgren and Heckert during their last presser that he had gotten a few emails from PSL holders and said "If Heckert trades back AGAIN they are going to dump their tickets.. LOL. If one of top guys are still there at 4 I think we pick em.

One of these guys has to be there when the Browns pick: Luck RG3 Kalil Claiborne Blackmon
Each of them warrant a top 5 pick and would fill a need for the Browns. I don't see how they could go wrong with any of them. The only one that isn't exciting is Kalil, but I couldn't care less about that factor. The Browns need an OT at some point in the first three rounds and Kalil is simply the best available. Personally, I would love to see them land RG3. I think he will transform the offense and with the other picks they have, there are bound to be WRs to fill the #1 spot.

let someone mortgage the farm to come up and grab rg3, (wash or mia?) get another 2 if poss this year and another #1 for next year. now we can draft bpa (using need to slightly influence the choice) and we have another building block for the future.
I think if we follow last years path, (and if you listen to Heckert, he sounds firmly committed to building through the draft, and acquiring extra picks when possible) in this years draft as well, we won't be picking in the top 15 in 2013.
I know we need a QB, but I still think that the team as a whole has other needs that can be turned into strengths now. IMO the stronger the rest of the team, the more room for growing pains with a qb, or maybe one of our own or a FA tuns into our franchise guy
I say trade down all the way unless Luck fell or Luck/RG3/Kalil were all gone (then i look at Claiborne) I want no part of Blackmon. WR/RB are too easy to find else where and still depend on OL/QB play anyways

I'm in the group that says stay put. This team needs players, but they need top end players. Trading back is good to fill a roster. Our roster needs added to not filled. Top end talent has been passed up for years now. It is time to take the playmaker at the top.
If Kalil is there at 5 IMO it is a no brainer. RT is the biggest weakness on the line. The only one that I would maybe hesitate on is RG3. I think Cam Newton has fogged up the thinking of many. IMO, RG3 is not the same thing.
Blackmon is my pick or Kalil. Richardson is tempting, but I like a FA choice at RB instead.

Here is what they know,., whatever fan base they lose by picking someone that doesn't excite the fans and media, it's short lived. Once they start winning the fans will come back and if the media beats on them, fans will revolt against the media.. and they damn well know it.
If drafting to satisfy the fans is in direct conflict with thier own better judgement, DON'T do it. that would be idiotic

I don't believe that to be true anymore. The new paradigm places more value on a game-changing WR.They are much harder to find.

I'm a fan, just a fan, I don't run an NFL Franchise. It Never has and never will matter what I or the media know they should do or think they should do.. as long as they do what they feel is right then they can sleep well at night,,
My point was, we (the fans and media) should have NOTHING to say about what or who they draft.. again, as long as they have a plan and are following it, that's the right path.
If/when it works, they can laugh at the fans and media and say "I told you so".. Until then, they will take the beatings. that's why they make the big bucks.
If it doesn't work, they have nobody to blame but themselves when they are sitting out, unemployed.
If they follow what the fans want or the media wants, and it fails, do you think the fans or media will accept the blame? HELL NO they won't.
So they might as well follow thier beliefs right to the very end.. GOOD OR BAD..
if you would have bothered to pay any small amount of attention, you would have realized that and not made a comment quite as dumb as you did.
When you attack someone then attempt to dress up it as a funny comment by using this you look pretty damn silly..

Lol first thought came to mind was I wonder if Belichick knew that about Cleveland media? Took over a team that was aging and turned them around. Media hated him. That team eventually got to the SB and won although with a different coach and city but what we had here in cleveland was going to be special. What ifs now.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I'd stay where we are. Let's get some premier talent for a change instead of stockpiling average guys.

As I said on another thread, We all want playmakers....so draft the only one that will be there when we pick ... Richardson. RB handles the ball more than anybody else except QB. Doesn't it make sense to finally draft the true playmaker that we always wanted?

If you think dropping down into the 20's will yield the same talent as the top 5 you're just not paying attention. Sure, it happens occasionally. So does getting a winning scratch-off lottery ticket. But you don't bank your future on it.
I could see them dropping down 2, maybe 3 spots from #4 but unless there is a "Ditka" deal they won't go any further down than that.

What are the rules come draft day about trading players for picks? With all the questions regarding Manning, I was wondering if a team like the Redskins would trade their number 6+ for Manning and if that is a trade that could happen on draft day.

You can definitely trade picks for players. Something somewhat complicated would have to be worked out to some degree beforehand. There is only so much one can do while on the clock.
Before the draft, something like "Hey, if we do not get Luck or Griffin, then would you consider this for Manning ..."

Obviously there is more talent at the top of the draft, but I don't think the drop off is as big as some believe (especially in this draft).
Also obviously, I wouldn't want to trade down to the 20's if it were for only a few picks. But if we could get another deal like we did last year I would do it. As I have said before, we need to accumulate talent. Getting multiple ones and twos will help do that.

That is absolutly a direct quote... But once again, what you fail to grasp and I really didn't think I needed to explain it is,, " if they pick someone that they don't want, (but do so to gain fan or media approval and acceptance), I'll lose all respect for them"
Of couse, you will ask, how would we know that? the answer is, we wouldn't right away., but at some point, these things come out. Just like when it was reported that the scouting staff all said for us to pick Richard Seymour but Butch Davis wanted someone else, (I think it was big money) These things have a way of making it to the surface.
I'm absolutly shocked you couldn't understand that.. But maybe it's my fault for not spelling it out better... I'll accept responsibility for misleading you.
You wanna talk absurd,,, I'll tell you whats so freakin absurd.. Telling someone that using this makes them look foolish.
Those Graemlins are there for us to use as we see fit, there aren't any guidelines that I"ve seen as to how and when to use them so everyone is left to thier own devices...
You need to take a moment and just think,, if they weren't there, how the hell would people know what others mean? There are times when words just aren't enough.
What else is absurd is you picking me as the one that looks foolish using them.. I have no doubt that others use them as much or more than I do, yet it's me you decide to single out.
Does that describe what I'm feeling for you at this moment.
Sorry for my part in derailing this thread... I got nothing more to say to BC on the subject...My guess is, he's not done yet.. But I am.

If Jeff Fisher takes the Miami Job I can see him trying to trade up from 9 to get RG3 at 4. This could play out Beautifully for the Browns. We will be in an enviable position for teams that think they are one player away or a team that wants Griffin. Fisher might like that Griffin is the vision he had for Vince Young without all the Drama. I can see teams like Dallas or Detroit wanting to trade there for Claiborne or Washington or Miami for Griffin. We could come out of this with a ransom like deal.

Throwing out another scenario for you all to discuss/debate:
Let's say Cincy falls in love with Trent Richardson and believes they are a RB away from really being able to compete in our division, which may be the case after this past year. Anyways, they call us and offer both of their 2012 firsts and fourth round pick to us for #4 (once again, I am basing these draft pick trades off of the NFL Draft Point Value Chart). Would you take it knowing that you will have to face Dalton/Green/Richardson twice a year for the next 10 years potentially??
That would give us three first round picks this year at 17, 21, and 22 (plus 3 4th round picks). It would give us many different options where we could combine picks to move back up into the early teens if we wanted to (maybe higher).
Potentially, our first three picks, if we want to go offense could be the Stanford G DeCastro, Baylor WR Wright, and the Miami RB Miller...
or, depending on if we focus free agency on the offense side of the ball...
We could go 3 defensive picks and pick up the Nebraska CB Dennard, South Carolina DE Ingram, and Alabama LB Hightower...
Thoughts??

Are you assuming Blackmon is gone when we make that trade? Because I really hate the idea of seeing him throw whoever our #2 corner is to the ground then sprint upfield into the end zone like he did against stanford. We don't know who they will pick if they trade up, we only know who they can't pick.

I'm sorry, I forgot to preface it with Luck, RG3, and Blackmon off the board.
