What free agents do you think we can realistically sign? Do you think we will go after one and pay them 12-15 mil per year?? If so, who?
I really like the Claiborne/Wright combo if we decide to stay at 4 and Claiborne is on the board (even if Blackmon is on the board)...IF that is the way we want to go in the draft, I would like to sign a WR to be our 1 and RT/RG as a starter in free agency (maybe a back-up DT and possibly LB). Do you think would pay a top free agent WR 12-15 mil a year to come here?? Bowe, Meachem, Steve Johnson??

I just think it would be interesting to see who you want in free agency to create some sort of mock draft...Because if you think we can get a top free agency WR, would you still want to draft Blackmon if Claiborne is still on the board?? If we get a starting RDE via free agency, would you still want to go after Ingram/Mercilus with possibly 1B??

Unless it is extremely close - I don't think you can play around and leave talent on the board. If Claiborne and Richardson are the two that are available and Claiborne grades out at a (just making up numbers) 90 while Richardson is an 85 ... why leave talent on the board? Take the best player.
If that means scooping up a starting Wideout in FA and one with one of the first rounders, then we go from having a weakness at the WR position to a strength.
Imagine having *(just throwing it out there - not exactly who I want) DeSean - Little- and then Floyd or Wright as the top 3 ... then with either Evan Moore / Josh Cribbs / Jordan Norwood / MoMass as the 4th .... I bet we see some open lanes and that opens the running game as the safeties back off as well.

This season we carried 5-7 wideouts. I checked the roster and we seemed to have Little,Massaqouai,Cribbs,Mitchell, Windsor,Norwood and Owen Spencer( never heard of him). We could easily add one WR through FA and one through the draft.

If I had to list my top 5 or 10 free agents (meaning the guys I'd love to see in a Browns uniform), here'd be the list, in no particular order:
DQ
Ray Rice (or Marshawn Lynch)
Jermichael Finley
Cliff Avril
Mike Wallace (restricted)
Carl Nicks
That being said, I can't see us signing anyone other than DQ - there'll be some big contracts on that list above.
Per your list, no thanks on Bowe. I'd take Meacham, mixed feelings on Johnson. Vincent Jackson would be interesting.
Solely because of past relationships with either Heckert or Holmgren, I could see interest from the Browns in DeSean Jackson or David Hawthorne. As a matter of fact, if we don't re-sign DQ, I could see us being aggressive trying to sign Hawthorne.
Dan Connor might be interesting LB as well.

You also have to consider teams are going to have to start spending up towards the cap limit as dictated in the agreement.
Rookies aren't going to get the money anymore, so that leaves paying your current players more.
I agree. I'd be surprised if more than maybe 20%
of the people listed as free agents actually end up on the market, and most of the ones who do won't be all that great.

I agree. FA is tricky, you've got 31 other teams, some going after the same exact guys. And usually the good players are all tagged or re-signed by their teams.
That leaves a large demand for a small number of players. Anyone that's proven good is usually very expensive

I agree, I always say that guys have to want to come here for us to get them.
Someone always says "It's all about the money", and that's a huge factor, but they also have to be willing to come here and play for this team. People want to enjoy their job, and these guys are very competitive. They hate to lose. They want to play for a team that at least has the potential of becoming very good.
It's just not all about the money......... Players have to want to come here. Heckert even said it in that interview I listened to (the one on 1/12/2012)
Getting guys to come to Cleveland over another team might require a bit of overspending. Nothing against Cleveland, but it's not as appealing as it might be to play in other cities

NFL teams can begin assigning franchise tags on February 20. On Tuesday, the Bears publicly confirmed that they’ll either be signing Forte to a long-term deal or tagging him between those two dates. “We’d like to (strike a long-term agreement),” Bears president and CEO Ted Phillips told ESPN 1000 Chicago. “But as (new G.M.) Phil (Emery) pointed out, we obviously will at least consider placing the franchise tag on him. We don’t have any intention of letting Matt hit the open market.” The 2012 franchise tag for running backs is expected to cost roughly $8 million. The Panthers paid DeAngelo Williams a five-year deal worth in excess of $8 million per season in July 2011, and Forte’s agents would surely settle for no less on their own long-term arrangement. As the piece points out, teams can trim salary by waiving players or restructuring deals. The Browns have several free agents of their own to try and work out agreements with as well, including MLB D’Qwell Jackson and RB Peyton Hillis. Not to mention everyone’s favorite kicker, Phil Dawson. The Cincinnati Bengals top the list of available cap space with an estimated $40 million to spend. Much of that should go to keeping several of their own players, however they will have cash to play with in the FA market. The Steelers will have the most fat to trim, as they are projected to be over the cap by around $25 million.

He is also a free agent and we need a wide receiver. We will probably be linked to most of the quality wide receivers who are available. Last off-season we were linked to many of the defensive ends that were available. It's all just speculation during a slow time in the off-season, but also a time when fans want to hear positive things about their team.
I think Manningham is a quality player, but I don't want to overpay a #2 receiver who is famous. If Massaquoi played on the Giants would he be just as good as Manningham? I think he would.

Well if we're talking speculation, every talking head and their second cousin is saying Brandon Lloyd will for sure "follow Josh McDaniels anywhere" and is for sure going to become a Patriot.
I'm guessing the free agency talk should start ramping up more after the Combine. The non-Peyton Manning talk that is. That's in full force now.
I haven't really heard much of any rumors . . . Someone just posted their opininon that they think Hillis is a good fit on the Raiders. Also heard a guy on the radio say the Bengals might be interested in him.
Speculation, smoke, mirrors, blah blah blah . . .

Guys like Manningham are going to want to play in an offense where they can make big plays.
That's not us, at least not right now.
We're probably going to have to settle for an aging veteran type and draft another WR in the 1st-3rd round.

Manningham's only 25. If he goes to a bad team, or a team with an unsettled QB situation, he could find himself retired in a year or 2.
Maybe I'm wrong ..... but until we settle our QB situation, it will be hard to attract anyone at WR except for unproven types or older veterans on their last contract.

Wouldn't Manningham become the #1 WR for the Browns, and if so, is he capable of that? I worry how he'll do without Nicks and Cruz on the field with him.

Manningham isn't a number 1.. He is a slot guy.. and I'm not sure how much better he is than Jordan Norwood.
Norwood is a pretty good slot guy.. He has great awareness when it comes to reading the defense and finding holes to get wide open.

OK... Let's get real... Who among our receiving corps is better than Manningham right now? I'd like to know because, right now, I can't think of one.
I'm not saying Manningham has what it takes to be a true "#1" (whatever that means). However, we have a serious deficit of talent at the WR spot and I think it is quite easy to make the case that, were he to come to Cleveland, Manningham would be the most talented WR on the roster (at least pre-draft and all else being the same).

I'd take Little over Manningham, but I think you could make the argument for either. Neither run good routes, Little has a bigger body and more upside, Manningham has better hands.
