Breaking News - "Wikipedia Will Go Dark On January 18 To Protest SOPA And PIPA"

Last updated 38 minutes ago

According to this article from TechCrunch; Wikipedia has decided to take a stand against the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act. In an effort to be heard, the online information hub, Wikipedia, has decided to shut down it's English site for 24 hours tomorrow, January 18, 2012.

There has been much talk about the newest bills set in place for the Internet. Wikipedia decided that by having a 24 hour black out on their English language site, they could truly encourage Internet users to contact their Congress members and encourage them to change the bill.

What do you think about the Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act? Do you support the bills? How do you think Wikipedia's day long strike will impact the future of the Internet?

The title is the condensed version... although, being that I first saw the story yesterday, I'd hardly call it "Breaking News", hehe

Wikipedia Will Go Dark On January 18 To Protest SOPA And PIPA

Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales wanted to send a “big message” to the U.S. government regarding the two heinous internet censorship bills currently being considered, and after a brief period of debate the world’s encyclopedia will soon do just that.

The Wikipedia founder announced on Twitter today that starting at midnight on Wednesday, January 18, the English language version of the world’s encyclopedia will go dark for 24 hours in protest of SOPA and PIPA. With their commitment confirmed, Wikipedia will be joining a slew of websites and companies that will suspend their operations for one day in an effort raise awareness around the two bills.

Meant to curb IP theft and piracy, the (imaginatively named) Stop Online Piracy Act and the PROTECT IP Act have raised eyebrows recently due to their decidedly scorched-earth approach to handling suspected offenders. Websites found to offer pirated content, along with the services that they use, could be hidden from US internet users by being delisted on search engines and potentially on DNS servers themselves.

Rather than let users access Wikipedia’s vast stores of English-language information on the 18th, Wales mentioned that the Wikipedia landing page will instead be populated with a letter of protest and a call to action that urges readers to get involved with the issue. It doesn’t appear as though the new landing page has been finalized, but one of the community’s prototypes can be seen above.

The news comes after a lengthy debate as to the particulars of such a grand gesture — whether or not the site should participate at all, which versions of the site would be affected, and how exactly the blackout would go down were all on the table for the community to discuss. Ultimately, the consensus pointed to a full blackout as a the proper way to make their collective displeasure known. There’s no official word on how other parts of the site will handle the event, although Wales has mentioned that the German language version of the site will be displaying a banner in support.

Meanwhile, some of SOPA’s supporters are already reacting to the very public backlash against the bill. Ars Technica reports that Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) would be pulling his DNS-blocking provisions from the bill after having consulted with “industry groups across the country.” What’s more, the White House has responded to two petitions about SOPA and PIPA on the official White House blog stating that they will not “support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

Wales notes on Twitter that while SOPA has been “crippled,” buts its counterpart in the Senate is still very much alive and very dangerous. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recently popped up on Meet The Press claiming his continued support for PIPA even though it “could create some problems.”

Though the event is meant to raise public awareness over two critical pieces of legislation, Wales still took a moment to offer a bit of sage advice for students heading back to school:

LOL Well, like I said, I'm no techsavvy guru type so I'm not sure of how significant this is..

Just went on Wikipedia and changed the story.

They are now shutting down to take a stand against people calling hooded sweatshirts 'hoodies' because it is annoying . . .

So - if I have this right - wikipedia won't be available for a day?

Oh, the shame. Oh, the misery they will inflict on the masses.

Wiki might want to be careful lest people decide they don't need wiki to live their lives..................

Depending on how it's worded, the SOPA could cause people who post on message boards, on Wiki, and other sites that "refer to copyrighted material" to be in violation of the law. In essense, this site could be in violation for just discussing a copyrighted NFL game ..... or by discussing a copyrighted Plain Dealer article. It's an asinine bill ..... once again, poorly worded and full of unintended consequences. This is usually what happens when Congress gets involved in areas it does not need to be involved in. There are already copyright laws. The FBI already prosecutes sites and owners of sites who violate the law. I bet that they could block foreign sites, like those from China, if they found that the Chinese government wasn't doing enough to stop piracy there.

Instead, we will get this convoluted mess full of consequences and penalties for people who are innocent of intent, and who want nothing more than a discussion of current events.

Also, imagine going to Google to look up a site for information, and the link you goes to has some forbidden link on it ..... or forbidden material. You could be in violation of the law simply by having visited the site. This proposed law is so badly written with such broad terms, conditions, and definitions that even poor old grandma might be facing an FBI raid if she visits the wrong site or mentions something she saw or read that was copyrighted. .

I would invite those who enjoy such discussions to write to your Congressman and Senators to express your opposition to this law. Tell them that they should enforce current laws instead of passing laws that could have serious repercussions for the average internet user.

this is exactly why it is such a big deal.

no one cares until they have no freedom or are in jail for a crime so stupid as this bill.

Exactly. The legislation basically introduces a U.S. equivalent of The Great Firewall of China or the limited internet that Iranians are allowed to have.

But the government is just here to protect us, because we are all to stupid and incapable of making daily decisions to maintain basic life functions.I know I thank Government every morning I wake and see "Breathe" imprinted on my bathroom mirror.

And thank heaven almighty they warned me about using my hair dryer in the shower.

SOPA Shelved After White House Petition Response

The White House has responded to petitions complaining about SOPA and Protect IP, a response that could lead to their demise.

The U.S. online piracy bill causing waves across the Internet may either receive a complete rewrite, or be tossed in the trash thanks to a White House response to several petitions over the weekend.

Just last week the legislation, known as the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House of Representatives and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate, saw proposed revisions by Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Lamar Smith that would see the Domain Name System (DNS) blocking provision removed from the impending bill. But now there are talks that the revisions will need to go much deeper than previously realized (aka replacement language) if Congressional staffers don't want to receive a veto by the White House. There's a possibility that they may even need to create an entirely new bill instead.

"While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet," the Obama Administration said in a public statement.

The White House stated that the proposed laws must not tamper with the technical architecture of the Internet through manipulation of the Domain Name System (DNS). Before the proposed revisions on Friday, there were fears that users would seek out foreign DNS servers to access blacklisted sites -- a splintering of the internet's architecture, so to speak. Even the White House saw a problem, stating that "analysis of the DNS filtering provisions in some proposed legislation suggests that they pose a real risk to cybersecurity and yet leave contraband goods and services accessible online."

"New legislation must be narrowly targeted only at sites beyond the reach of current U.S. law, cover activity clearly prohibited under existing U.S. laws, and be effectively tailored, with strong due process and focused on criminal activity," the White House stated. "Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing."

News Corp. chief Rupert Murdoch didn't appear happy about the White House response on Monday, saying that "Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery." He also seemingly blames Google for piracy, claiming the search engine giant "streams movies free, sells advts around them. No wonder [we're] pouring millions into lobbying."

The debate over the proposed bill is expected to intensify over the next few weeks. The White House said the organizer behind the We The People petition and a random sample of the signers will be invited to a conference call to discuss the issue further with Administration officials. After that, the White House will host an online event to get more input and answer questions about the bill.

Saturday's White House response was written by Victoria Espinel, Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator at Office of Management and Budget, Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, and Howard Schmidt, Special Assistant to the President and Cybersecurity Coordinator for National Security Staff. The full response can be read here.

Yeah, Wiki is blacked out, and Google has a big black box over their name with a link to an online petition.

Just finished writing the congresspeople -- it's an easy step but with the masses it really does make a difference. You don't have to make the most eloquent argument either, what counts for these things is numbers (somewhat unfortunately)

Wiki is still technically open for "emergencies" - the script which forwards you to the Stop SOPA page was written only in javascript, so disabling javascript on your web browser will allow you to surf wiki as usual

Not sure if sarcasm?

But probably 150 times a day - there's a reason why it's the 6th most visited website in America (ahead of ebay, twitter, espn.com etc.)

If you're using firefox, using the add-on "no script", will block that redirect and show you what you're after.

SOPA Shelved After White House Petition Response

The White House has responded to petitions complaining about SOPA and Protect IP, a response that could lead to their demise.

Be wary of it coming back in a different form that is still just as bad.

SOPA allows big media to shutdown DNS for sites like this one without having to work through the legal system (DNS is the system that translates domain names like dawgtalkers.net into IP addressess, without it, you would have to know IP addresses for all sites that you are interested in). Currently, if you want to prevent someone from infringing on your copyrights, you have to be watchful for infringement and then work to get this addressed through the normal legal channels that involve some sort of judge/jury.

Under the proposed system, service providers, like the owners of this board are required to watch for everyone elses infringing content or they will have their DNS revoked without a judge/jury even being involved.

In short, it violates at a minimum the First, Fourth, and Fifth amendments to the Constitution.

For those here in Ohio, you should know that your Senator Sherrod Brown is a co-sponsor of the Senate for of this bill, PIPA. Originally, he opposed similar legislation in COICA, but then received enough donations from big media to change his mind. Do not be shy about contacting him and letting him know how you feel.

Yup, I sent a few message to my reps. I tried not to use too many 4-letter words (to offend them or confuse them.....3-letter words are usually their limit for comprehension).

And don't worry Arch, we all know you're our resident anti-technologist. You don't understand why anyone needs anything technical (phones, internet, computers, etc to live their life). While nobody NEEDS Wikipedia, like how we need oxygen, but it is a very important and useful tool. Like someone said above, it's like the 6th most visited website in the world. I know I use it all the time (my wife asks what other movies actorX has been in....BAM, answer).

It's not just about wiki being down for a day. It's about the bigger picture if these bills were to pass.

FYI, reddit is also blacked out

It appears that the Senate site has crashed.

We all know that no politician does anything without being prodded and poked or paid (in the form of donations to a campaign or similar)

So, who is behind this. Who's pushing politicians to do this..

Find that out and you may get a sense of why people sponsor bills like this.

Well, most of the major content producers (not distributors) are strongly in favor, and wrote quite a bit of the legislation. So people like the RIAA, MPAA, hollywood studios, CNN, FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, etc. are all behind it.

Complete List:
https://sites.google.com/site/boycottsopasponsors/home/list-of-supporters-and-sponsors

The only web company that was for awhile was Godaddy.com (because they were specifically excluded from being prosecuted in the bill, i.e. "web hosts, with the exception of godaddy.com, can be sued for....") which gave them a major leg up. They backed off after a very successful boycott in december (where tens of thousands of website owners moved their sites off of godaddy)
