We should not have let this guy go......I don't understand this move by Phil.. Russell is one of the smartest players we had and a great leader for the secondary.

I agree, but it's entirely possible Brian wanted to test the Market and see what he's worth out there... probably more than we're willing to pay with the emergence of Pool & Jones and given the potential of Justin Hamilton.

Where they gonna play him? According to ESPN they signed Deon Grant earlier today and he's a FS and they have that Boulware kid that i thought they were pretty high on at SS. If he's signing to be a backup then Phil better get on the phone with him and see if he'll stay here to be the same.

The fact he is getting offers now shows he is a second tier player. His offer there might not be better than any he gets here.

I would like to keep him, but if we lose him it isn't any great loss. Jones is ready to lead the secondary.

I really like the guy's leadership and smarts, but frankly I think we need the roster spot for a higher caliber player.

I like it too, but we don't need to get stupid over Brian Russell.

He is a nice player and a guy you like to have on your team, but it isn't like we are talking about Ed Reed.

We might miss his leadership in reading offenses but, I guess it might be time for Jones to step in.

Exactly, I am not going to lose sleep over losing Russell. He is a decent player who provided good leadership. Time to let our young guys take over and see what they can do. Jones is solid and with playing time I think Pool is an upgrade over Russell.

Seahawks | Team reaches agreement with Russell

Seahawks agreed to terms with S Brian Russell on an undisclosed contract.

Odd, considering Seattle just gave Deon Grant a huge deal. Russell, recovering from offseason elbow surgery, will be asked to compete with Mike Green and Michael Boulware as a pecking order at safety is established. Restricted free agent Jordan Babineaux is also in the mix.

Good luck Brian. He brought some real smarts and leadership to our defensive backfield, and when he wasn't in there, it was noticeable. However, hopefully Jones will thrive on the added pressure of having to be the leader back there.

That's a beauty highlight. Someone posted that the week it happened, and I emailed it to buddies at work. Major league pop, and Chad was on the right end of it.
I would have rather kept Russell than not, but we're young at safety. Hope he does well in Seattle.

NNNNNNNOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! You're not allowed to pursue him. That would be pretty funny if he refused to sign any contracts, and said "I want Cleveland, I'm not in it for the money."

I don't understand how Savage thinks sometimes. He lets Russell walk and wants to sign that stiff from the Bengals.

The Brown's secondary and defense took a turn for the worse after Russell went out of the lineup last year. Pool is the most overrated player on the team. He is one of those guys who has all the physical attributes you want, but can't get it done on the field. I've never seen a db stand around as much as he does.

And that safety from the Bengals is absolutely terrible. Yeah, he had 6 picks, but he is constantly in highlight reels.......too bad it's on the wrong end of them.

I have been happy w/some of Savage's moves this off-season, but letting Russell walk and persuing Kae is dumb.

How do we know that it wasn't Russels wishes to leave and test the market and maybe Phil Savage just decided to respect his wishes or something. Maybe that whole rant from Breyby just got under Russels skin so much that he told Phil he wanted out (I'm making stuff up right there, but it's just an example). I mean, I don't know what goes on in Phils head, but Brian Russel was a leader on the team and I can't see Savage just "letting him walk" unless there was a real reason behind it or it was Russels wishes.

I know it's a business and you don't let a good guy out (Barry Sanders in Detroit, even when he tried to come back Detroit wouldn't let him join a different team), but I mean, how well is a guy going to do or WANT to do if he doesn't want to be on the team anymore.

I'm just throwing stuff out there for possibilities b/c Savage doesn't seem to be an idiot.

Russell said he wanted to stay w/Cleveland and it has been public knowledge that the Browns weren't interested in keeping Russell for quite some time. Actually, that news came out during the season.

And I didn't say Savage was an idiot. I said I didn't like him letting Russell walk and going after that piece of crap from the Bengals.

I have praised Savage for getting Steinbach and Lewis and not throwing stupid money after Clements. I simply call each move as I see it. Whereas many posters think every move he makes is brilliant. Hell, I still remember all the praise he got for signing guys like Stewart, Coleman, Fisk, Andruzzi, Baxter, etc.

I wanted to keep Russell too, but I doubt Savage merely let him walk. As I stated above, he may have wanted to test the market, and it sounds like it paid off for him.

Yeah, I wish him well though. I really liked how he handled himself on and off the field. Maybe not the most physically gifted safety out there, but he was a good leader on the field and in the locker room and he left it all on the field every Sunday.

i would have like to resign Russel, but 5 YEARS?!...i understand why we let the guy go...to match/trump a 5 year deal in this market woulda been a serious commitment, to both the cap and the field...Pool has the (unfulfilled) potential, and all GM's will give their own draftees the benefit of the doubt...this could turn out very bad if Pool doesn't improve in his 3rd year (which is about the time most DBs turn the corner if they're ever gonna)...if he does prove a starter, this loss will be quickly forgotten...i'm crossing my fingers...

Yeah, this is pretty much how I saw this thing going down too. Russell has been a pretty reliable vet back there for us and I highly doubt we just let him walk. Chances are we were offering 1-2 years and Brian felt, correctly apparently, he could get more elsewhere. Good for him, bad for us.

This seems to be the prevailing thought. It's just not quite accurate.

Seattle signed Russell for 5 years, but that doesn't mean that the Browns would have had to sign him for 5 years.

Russell made it know that he wanted to stay w/the Browns. During the season, the Browns made it known that they were NOT interested in resigning him. There was no talk of 5 yrs. It was the player wanting to stay and the team not wanting the player.

I didn't think very highly of Russell when he came here, but the guy played pretty good. Our defense obviously missed him when he went out this year. Check the numbers out pre and post Russell. I do know that Russell has played much better at FS than Pool has. As I said before, Pool is the most overrated player on this team.

I did like what I saw of Hamilton. He's pretty big and has nice football speed. I don't know what his 40 time is, but he plays faster than Pool. He could help us. I do NOT want the Browns to sign that Kae bum from the Bengals.

I think the best thing to do would have been to sign Russell earlier in the process for a 2-3 yr. deal. Too late now.

I don't know what his 40 time is

The 6’03” 220 lb. safety vaulted up the draft boards after his incredible performance at Virginia Tech’s Pro Day. Justin ran his 40 in the 4.4’s, vertical jumped 42 ½”, broad jumped 10’06” & ran his 20-yard shuttle in 4.04 seconds!

http://www.defrancostraining.com/ask_joe/archives/ask_joe_06-05-12.htm

Justin Hamilton S Hamilton (6-2½, 218) ran his 40s in 4.54 and 4.52 seconds. He also ran the short shuttle in 4.04 and the three-cone drill in 6.66. In addition, he had a 42½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-6 broad jump and 19 lifts.

Thanks. Impressive numbers.

I don't know how closely you guys watch the game, but if it's more to you than just an excuse to get drunk, you probably noticed that Hamilton looked big back there and he was very active. You probably also noticed that he took playing time away from Pool. You probably also noticed the guy was moving around pretty good on the football field.

I'm not annointing the kid, because it was just a few games, but he is an interesting prospect. I'm going to pay attention to his progress during the camps. Hopefully, he can be the answer that Pool was supposed to be.

I totally agree Vers...i'd feel more comfortable with Hamilton starting over Pool right now. Pool just seems that he isn't all there in the head, doesn't play smart.

Well, I don't drink. I watch the games in slow motion all week ( just too fast for me at regular speed) and I focus on Justin a lot. Last year was only his second year at safety since high school. I think he is the reason Russell was expendable. He can step in and take over for Pool or Jones if need be.More useless info I have;

College Career

Started 15-of-52 games during his career at Virginia Tech, with eight starts on defense as a senior and seven more on offense as a receiver his sophomore campaign…Joined the program as a halfback, switching to wide receiver in 2002 and then moved back to halfback as a junior, before settling in on defense his final season…Finished his career with 35 tackles in 13 games on defense and collected 336 yards on 75 carries (4.5 avg.) and 3 TDs along with 34 receptions for 369 yards (10.8 avg.) and 1 TD in 39 games on offense.

Sounds like you watched him closer than I did. I saw that he was big; a willing hitter, active, and around the ball. Tell me if you noticed how he did in the following areas:

---closing speed

---angles to the both a ball carrier and receivers running down the field

---hips......was he able to turn and run w/out a hitch

---play recognition

I don't want any college scouting reports. Just tell me what you saw w/your own eyes in those final few games last season. If you don't know, that's okay. I'm just trying to get more info on him. Like I said.........the kid kinda intrigues me.
