Quote: Game definitely came down to the wire. Just so everyone knows though, Conn has beaten Cinci 7 of last 10 meetings. This was just an anomaly.
Cincinnatti is on a roll, this game had me nervous too. Two big wins for UConn before this game, and Cinci quietly has won like 9 of their last 10.
Connecticut is the superior program without a doubt but a lot of those 7 wins out of the last 10 came during the down years after the Huggins fall out. They're still not quite on Uconns level right now but are on the way back up.
I was shocked to see they have 7 Big East road wins in a row. A positive sign that they are indeed turning the corner.
Not having Ryan Boatwright is killing us, and it's gonna be an even bigger problem later in this game against Tenn. I don't think we expected to be playing this year with only one point guard.
The latest i've heard is that Boatwright is facing this investigation because his mother flew to one of his colleges with him, and the plane ticket was paid for by Derek Rose's brother (and AAU coach). I guess he and Boatwright's mother know each other, and he gave her the ticket so that she could go check out the school with her son. Makes sense........
It's just too bad. Derek Rose's brother really has absolutely no connection to UConn. So we're stuck playing Shabaz Napier pretty much the whole game, and he just doesn't have the legs to do it. He's a very high energy player, and not being able to take any breaks is definitely affecting his game.
We really need Boatwright back ASAP. I guess some of this is because we have limited scholarships with the NCAA stuff, I just wish we had more than two ball handlers on this team....... (Napier and Boatwright) ------------------------------------------------------------- Great job by UConn trying to come back at the very end, but they shot themselves in the leg in this game. No depth in the backcourt without Boatwright in the game and Alex Oriaki fouls out with like 9 min left.
Conn's gotta figure it out. Tons of potential, but the Boatwright thing has to get figured out and UConn needs to figure out how to get consistent offense this year. Sometimes it seems like the other guys (SF, PF, C) aren't moving. It's all isolation, NBA 1 on 1 style for Jeremy Lamb and Napier. It can be a lot better.
We'll see. I have faith though, come tourney time, Calhoun will have these kids ready. Two losses in a row means, fire will be lit under the behind of this team. There's a long lay off after this game, hopefully we'll get Boatwright back, Napier can nurse his troubled ankle, and we can rest our guard's legs, while getting some insane Calhoun practices in
Oriakhi is not playing as intense as he did last year. Uconn as a whole is not playing with a lot of fire and passion. I think this is where not having Kemba will hurt. He always went 110% and inspired his teammates to do the same. It could be because of Drummond not being ready yet.
OSU news, still the best defense in college basketball:

We'll be okay, we're just running Shabaz Napier and Jeremy Lamb at 40 min a game piece. We have two guards, and only one of them can carry the ball.
Even Kemba Walker needed short breaks. And when he couldn't get them, he was exhausted by the end of the game. The team seems to get resurgence of urgency when it's the very end of the 2nd half, which is great, but we lose our legs toward the middle of the 2nd half.
Not having a 3rd guard is killing us. It's really too bad with this Ryan Boatwright - NCAA thing.
You are right though, Kemba was an extraordinary leader, and Napier, as competitive and hardworking as he is, isn't a leader like Kemba was. I don't think UConn's ever had a leader like Kemba though.
But as I said, we don't play again till the 29th, so I hope everything will get better. Oriaki is replaceable once Tyler Olander gets healthy, we just need to continue to grow and the NCAA to finish investigating Boatwright
We aren't the best team in the NCAA yet, but Conn still has a month and a half to get there. That's what's kinda screwed up about March Madness IMO (there's not enough advantage for teams have have a great regular season), but this year, it works out in UConn's favor.
And Oriaki last year had similar problems until the Big East Tourney. His defense will always be pretty solid, but sometimes he is missing from the rebounding game and his offense is so freakin soft. Luckily, in big games, he shows up. I'm willing to bet he will this year also. I guess it's better to give your all in big games than not, but Oriaki's inconsistency is brutal.
Quote: It's just disapointing, because last years team fed off of Kembas emotion and energy.
OSU vs Michigan Sunday at 1
Don't you worry CandyMan, UConn's not gonna let me down. Therefore, they won't let you down either. We'll see your Buckeyes in the Final Four, that'll be a long five days of smack talking!
I'll prob watch that game on Sunday, should be a good one. Michigan has become a relevant basketball team in the past two years. I think they beat UConn last year actually. And they just beat MSU. Should be a good game.
I've watched both a few times this year and I don't even think it would be that big of an upset. I have not been impressed with UNC at all for most of the season... they seem to have the ability to turn it on when they want to, like they did against Va Tech in the second half but they seem to be rather lifeless for large portions of games...
It would not surprise me at all to see NCSU beat them.. in fact if it wasn't AT UNC, I might pick NCSU to win...
that game was hideous and disgusting. Long ways to go for state, but hopefully this will light a fire under their asses. They played so timid today its unbelieveable. When they play Duke twice, and defensive minded Virginia, and defensive minded and long Florida State, they cant be lacksadaisical on offense or defense...
Have to treasure possessions. Make them count for you
"It has to start somewhere It has to start somehow What better place than here? What better time than now?"
Trey Burke vs. His best friend Sully, going to be interesting to see if he can control his emotions. He grew up a huge Buckeye fan but Matta never offered him.
Conn lost another nail biter today. Constantly playing from behind though. Offense isn't moving enough and the right guys aren't taking the right shots. Usual good UConn defense, the team just doesn't have good chemistry yet.
Jeremy Lamb reminds me of Ben Gordon when he played at UConn, except not quite as good with the ball. He's as good of a shooter though, and he's probably a better defender. The guy is good, but man, he'd be better with one more star on his team who can draw double teams, drive to the hoop and kick him the ball.
Lamb also needs to take more shots period. He can get separation for jump shots with the ball. I'd just rather have him take jump shots off the dribble than some of the other Conn players. May be Jeremy doesn't want to hurt his FG percentage
I think Michigan could give teams fits in the tournament. they nearly beat duke a year ago. their defense was very good today, they just couldn't hit shots. I think besides Ohio State, the wolverines have the team to get to an elite 8 or final 4.
16 teams? if you only had 16 teams, where would all the mid majors go? this isn't college football where you only have 120 schools in division 1. I believe there's over 300 for basketball. no way could you have that few teams in a tournament.
the past 5 years there have been plenty of lower seeds make deep runs in the tournament. the tournament is the best thing going today in sports outside of the super bowl. no way you mess with that. The regular season is just a way for teams to prep for the tournament.

I agree that it makes things more exciting. But it also creates a situation where being the #1 ranked team in the country means absolutely nothing. It's the bad part of the tourney. One and done in such a competitive sport.
We talk about where our team is ranked, or who beats who. But at this point in the year, what does it matter. As long as you're in the tournament, you're basically back at square one.
That's the way that college basketball is set up. You might as well just play to be one of the 60 best teams in the country, and then kick it into high gear during the tournament.
I've come to accept this, I just don't know if it's right. I mean, UConn this year, we aren't looking so good lately. But I bet we have a good chance of making the tourney, and we have the players to make another run. I wouldn't be surprised if we win it all again this season. You all might disagree, but we were losing games like this last year too. We've lost 3 out of our last 4 games to Notre Dame. Lost twice to them last year and once this year, lol.
I enjoy reading your posts. And I know you're a UConn fanboy. But you cannot seriously think they'll make the championship game playing like they are now, can you?
At this point it wouldn't surprise me if they got nailed in the first weekend of the tourney.
Of course, at the start of every season I think the Browns will win, too, so what do I know.....

At this point. But with the players on our team, we've got as good a shot as anyone. We've lost all our recent games by very close, most of the recent ones were without Ryan Boatwright.
Once we get offensive chemistry going, the team can go far. Offensive chemistry was the same problem Conn had last year, and down the stretch they figured it out. This team is no worse at this point in the season than they were last year.
With our three guards, Lamb, Napier, and Boatwright. And our big men, with Drummond this year, we have the talent to beat any team in the league. Just have to figure it out. Last year we figured it out
Last year, at this point in the season, we were losing games like the ones we've recently lost too. We just happened to put it all together at the Big East tourney, won five games there and then won the whole NCAA tourney
Quote: If UCONN doesn't get a leader they will be finished early.
We'll see, I have faith that everything will be figured out come NCAA tourney time.
We have a sig bet going don't we? UConn wins, you rock a sign I want you to for a month, and the same goes for me if OSU wins. Some other team means a push.

Going to my first UConn game tomorrow! Can't wait. Conn tickets are hard to get, and I didn't get into the college coming out of high school.
I watch all the games on television, but this will be my first time seeing live and in person. Can't wait! My best buddy just started going there this fall and he'll be giving me his and his girlfriend's tickets (they can't make it). So I'm going with another buddy to the game. They're student tickets though, so I have to borrow an ID card from a friend of mine (his freshman ID from 2004!) I'm thinking god has a plan, he wants me to see UConn, I will not be denied by the door guy!
Unfortunately Calhoun won't be there Once again we have that George Blaney coaching, when I want Kevin Ollie to be the coach, and we are on a 3 game losing streak.
It's a major revenge game, and not having Calhoun puts us at a big disadvantage.
