I know I've read others complain about not being able to cite twitter before, but twitter is where this issue has come from in the first place. Hope this is allowed, and I apologize if it's not in the right location.************************************************************* Tony Grossi Calls Randy Lerner "Pathetic" and "Irrelevant Billionaire" in Now-Deleted Tweet Posted by Vince Grzegorek on Thu, Jan 19, 2012 at 1:55 PM Browns owner Randy Lerner went on the Triv show yesterday for an interview. (You can listen for yourself here.) Naturally, this is of interest to Browns fans, and, you would think, the Browns beat reporter for the Plain Dealer. But not so much. At least, not in a tangible news sense. Only as an excuse to fire away with an opinion what was likely meant as DM to someone, but which found its way to the public eye. Here's what Grossi had to say, after telling Twitter that he didn't listen to the interview, because, ya know, covering the Browns isn't really his job or anything: "He is a pathetic figure, the most irrelevant billionaire in the world."***************************************************************** http://www.clevescene.com/scene-and-hear...w-deleted-tweetYou can read the "tweets" on the provided link - their's also the obligatory apology from the PD and Grossi himself, so that didn't take long at all to back away from. Honestly, how can he continue to be the Browns beat reporter after telling the world he thinks the owner is pathetic and an irrelevant billionaire? He's always seemed tremendously bitter to me and this is just another example... he got ticked that someone else in town got the interview.

I don't care that Grossi dislikes Lerner. That's his right. Grossi isn't a fan; he's a writer. He can't be both.
However, to say this in public is a terrible, unprofessional idea. Just stupid.

You know, he's allowed to express his opinion and everything. And maybe he really hates Lerner. Whatever.
But I (and I think several others on this board) feel like Grossi is often very hostile toward the Browns, always drumming up controversy, etc. Maybe it's because he loves the team so much that it's driving him crazy (as it does for all of us).
But, he just comes across as so negative at times, it seems like he'll only be happy when everyone's fired so he can complain about everyone being fired, and then when everyone's hired, so he can complain that we hired the wrong guys.
And now he's complaining about the owner of the team, a guy who, IMO, is the perfect owner. He hires the people, then doesn't interfere. Say what you will about who he hires, but I'd love if my boss just said "do your job, here's a blank check."
If this was another writer, I probably wouldn't give it a second look. But since it's Grossi, it makes me think this guy just hates this team (or loves it to the point of psychosis).
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Very unprofessional on his part. At this point I'd rather have Roger Brown back and Tony Grossi gone.

He needs to go. His act is tired, played, and so predictable. Get someone from outside of Cleveland to come in and be that guy. Kind of like how Vic Carucci is with the Browns (love the outside non-biased in either direction viewpoint)

Yes, he's gone too far. He's chastised many people for screw ups far less negative than this one. Time to take your own medicine, Grossi. I frickin' love it when a reporter that fabricates controversy for every minute incident gets caught with his pants down.

j/c Yea it is pretty funny. I take 90% of what he and Mary Kay write with a grain of salt. I am not from Cleveland so I miss a lot of the news articles but seems to me that Terry Pluto is the most level-headed and non-biased. JMO

Who cares? lol
Lerner hasn't exactly been some incredibly effective team owner. He also hasn't been some incredibly amazing business figure as well. He sold off the assets his father left to him and his family, like MBNA, and bought a soccer club to go with the Browns. To the best of my knowledge, he really hasn't accomplished all that much in the business world. he hasn't been a raging success in the sporting world.
Pathetic isn't the most politically correct or polite term ...... but he hasn't been hugely successful on his own.

Yup, he sure did.. Now you know what I've seen in grossi for years.. It's just that now, it's VERY much out in the open..
Like I said,I give him credit for apoligizing, but you know,, I don't think he meant it at all..,,

Maybe somebody should "grossi" up this story:
Like fabricate an ongoing feud between Grossi and Lerner....or:
Tony's not happy with the amount of press time he's getting.
The apology was only given at the recommendation of his agent, and he faked carpal tunnel syndrome to avoid writing an in depth response.
An unnamed source said that Grossi is looking to move to another rag.
Another source said that the other reporters at the PD did an intervention with him, causing turmoil within the organization.

Personally If I was Randy Lerner I would tell the PD that guy is not welcome at any of my facilities and have all his pass credentials revoked. No more access to the locker room nothing.
I've argued with Grossi on twitter before he's a pompus person that thinks he knows more about running the team then the people running the team.
The he would see just how much an irrelevant billionaire is to his paycheck.

well, it's not like he's a total loser either.

Early life: Lerner graduated from Columbia University in 1984, spending 1983 at Clare College in Cambridge, England. He graduated from Columbia Law School and is a member of the New York and District of Columbia Bar Associations. Prior to entering the business world, he worked as a lawyer in New York City.
Business history; Lerner's business career began at the Progressive Corporation as an investment analyst. In 1991, he started an independent investment firm with Progressive capital called Securities Advisors, Inc. (SAI), which he owned and managed until 2001. SAI initially specialized in arbitrage before shifting its focus to equity investing.
He's had his share of successes without his father, But clearly, not anywhere near the level of Al..
I'm glad Wiki is back up and running

I kind of think we all should care. Not that he thinks Lerner is pathetic - he can think that all day long, many do, I happen to think they're all wrong - but that he's the beat reporter for the team OWNED by Randy Lerner and he's putting his feelings out there in public. You mean to tell me his personal feelings of Lerner couldn't bleed into the way he covers the team? I certainly think they do.
As someone above wrote, he's acting like a petulant child because Randy Lerner won't talk to him. Boo hoo. I wonder why?
I just don't see how he can be taken seriously in covering the Browns anymore, or how the Browns can continue to grant him access. Can you imagine the PPG beat writer sending out a tweet like that about Rooney and then walking into Latrobe? lol. Wouldn't happen.
Have fun covering the Arena League next season, Tony.

He kinda has to be, he works in the same building as them. I think he actually offers a bit of insight, but it's a tough place to be when you are a few rooms away from those guys working their rear ends off.
I think if Vic worked for the PD, you'd get better stuff. He's not the best writer in the league, but he's well-respected and understands the NFL very well.

I don't understand why Grossi still has a job.
Most readers hate him. Most see his columns for what they are: a bunch of tripe.
Hopefully somewhere in Bristol Coach Mangini is having a laugh over this.

I wonder how many people are blasting Grossi today, but would have praised him up and down if they knew what he said to, and about our former coach from his 1st presser on?
Grossi hated Mangini ..... and I mean hated like someone would hate the kid who took their lunch money, spot on the football team, and girlfriend all at the same time. I never understood it ...... but he was irate from the word go where Mangini was concerned.
Grossi can also be quite an ass on Twitter. This isn't the only example. His back and forth with people can hardly be described as fan friendly much of the time.

How long have I been saying this about the Media in General and Grossi in particular? YEARS AND YEARS..
The thing that threw me over the edge on him was on the TV show he was on with donovan, Coach Sam and deiken. The Point After. he announced and guaranteed that the next head coach of the Browns would be Bill Cowher.. he totally guaranteed it. at that moment, I know he was a joke and could not take anything he said as gospel...

Why is it true? He called him a pathetic figure and an irrelevant billionaire... he didn't call him an ineffective owner, which might be true, he didn't call him a poor businessman, which might be true.. he called him a pathetic figure... to me, that sounds awful personal... so I'd like to know how it's "true".
And Lerner owns 2 professional sports franchises and has a net worth of over a billion dollars (I don't care if he inherited most of it) and the professional blogger with for a paper with declining readership is calling him irrelevant.

jc,
Grossi has a right to his opinion, and his right to express that how he chooses.
But from a professional standpoint, when he calls me for an interview, I wonder what he REALLY thinks of me before I accept or decline now.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I cancelled my subscription to the Plain Dealer a couple years ago. The woman on the phone asked why and encouraged me to keep it. I told her They have the worst Sports Writers in the Nation. I said when they get rid of Grossi and Mary Kay I would come back. She said they get a lot of that!

LOL,, Now this is just a guess on my part, But I'm thinking that if Grossi calls Lerner for an interview, his call will not get returned... Again, just a guess on my part.....
Grossi and Channel 19 WOIO have been taking pot shots at Lerner for years. Channel 19 because Lerner booted them as the preseason broadcast partner over his nieces drowning incident and the coverage that 19 gave it.

That would be the best news for The Plain Dealer because I would think they would see a bump in sales. The guy is bad and I don't know of anyone who likes him for his writing or his bad opinions on that show. I think Dieken wants to punch him in the Mouth.

No doubt about that. Grossi comes off as such an arrogant tool on all the STO shows. As one poster mentioned above, he's not the friendliest guy on Twitter either. Last summer I asked him a question about a players contract on Twitter, and he responded with snide comments.

intervention--lol
tony and gloria--I just ate dinner a few mins. ago. NO. just no.
As far as Grossi is concerned,
in fairness to him, he may have meant to DM someone on twitter but screwed up.
However, he is protected by the union and will most likely get nothing more than a tongue-lashing.
The Guild is a powerful union, plus he is tenured and won't lose his job. He makes good money in a dying industry and doesn't realize how good he has it.

To the best of my knowledge, he really hasn't accomplished all that much in the business world. he hasn't been a raging success in the sporting world.
Pathetic isn't the most politically correct or polite term ...... but he hasn't been hugely successful on his own.

I wonder how many people are blasting Grossi today, but would have praised him up and down if they knew what he said to, and about our former coach from his 1st presser on?
Grossi hated Mangini .....
So it's not okay to blast Grossi if he's dogging Genie, but Who Cares? If it's about our Owner? Typical YTown. I know you've said it's water under the bridge but...You sure have not acted like it all season long. Any chance you've gotten, you been dogging the crap out of our FO.
