it didn't say that he was fired, only that he's no longer the Browns Beat reporter. Even if he was fired, I won't feel a single bit of sympathy, nor empathy.
All I can say is that it's about time. He's been worthless as a reporter for years.
well, you are technically correct, but his job has been beat writer for the Browns/NFL for, I don't know how long,, 15 or 20 years or more.. Dunno.
So, if that's his primary job, and he's been moved off that beat, then he's in essence fired. That is not to say that he won't be covering basketball or baseball or soccer or college sports. Or he may even still cover the NFL. Just not the Browns.

I think they should keep him on to cover the Canton Charge at a fraction of his current rate.

Sources: Tony Grossi Pulled from Browns Beat Over Randy Lerner Tweet POSTED BY VINCE GRZEGOREK ON WED, JAN 25, 2012 AT 2:07 PM
Multiple sources tell Scene Tony Grossi is no longer the Browns beat writer for the Plain Dealer as of today.
Last week, Grossi accidentally tweeted the following about Randy Lerner: "He is a pathetic figure, the most irrelevant billionaire in the world." He has lost his post as a result of that.
He was in hot water with his editors and bosses at the PD over the inadvertent tweet, which displayed a huge bias, hatred even, toward the Browns' owner.
There was an obvious question whether he could objectively continue to cover the beat, one which the Plain Dealer weighed in on today with the move.
Managing Editor Thomas Fladung had no comment when reached by Scene.

I'm not surprised the Plain Dealer removed Grossi from covering the Browns..as this brief story points out, Grossi compromised his objectivity with his tweet which "which displayed a huge bias — hatred even — toward the Browns' owner", according to this story...I agree.
It's ok to think Lerner is "Pathetic" and an "Irrelevant Billionaire"...
It's ok to tell others how you feel...
But when you put your personal thoughts down in writing, whether paper, internet or tweet...there is a record...sometimes, a public record which can be very costly. Grossi is not the first person to pay a price for tweeting thoughts that should have remained private...and he won't be the last.
Probably just a matter of time before Grossi leaves the Plain Dealer..he might "retire" like Bruce Arians did, who knows...

Wow .. that's actually kinda shocking.
I wonder how or if this changes his status as a Hall of fame voter? He has always been a staunch defender of Cleveland against an Art MoSmell Hall of Fame induction. I think that they have a voter from every NFL city ...... but I don't know if Mary Kay Cabot would do as good a job of defending the city against the indignity of a MoSmell enshrinement or not.
Well .... he was stupid to do what he did, and has now paid the price.

Years ago, when I used Yahoo Messenger far more than I do today, I was talking to a friend on there. I had agreed to watch another friend's kids.I wrote something like "Yeah, I have to leave soon to go watch those little monsters. I hope I don't have to tie them to chairs", or some otherwise really mean comment.
I realized, when I got a reply from the friend whose kids I was all set to watch ........ that I had sent my response ......... to the wrong person.
Ooops. They were little monsters, who misbehaved and screamed almost non stop every minute of the day .... but I still felt bad afterwards.
I would assume that it works the same on Twitter? Maybe a private message was accidentally sent as a public message? I know that I have seen that happen, especially on the old board. lol

Twitter has a direct messaging feature. It would be like you posting to this thread instead of sending me a PM on it. This happens fairly often, surprisingly.

Well, on twitter, you can send a "direct message" to someone. It's essentially a message that goes right to their mailbox, for lack of a better word. It's like a PM on here.
I think the belief is that he meant to send it as a direct message but instead tweeted it.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Its my understanding that is exactly what happened. He meant to direct message and end up finger farting (or mouse farting) his job away.

LOL,, thats freakin rich.. in the last 12 years, there never was a time that Grossi was objective... Nothing new.. it just took the PD 12 years to figure it out.
Been saying it for years,, Grossi had/has it in for the Lerners and the Browns..
ya know what's funny, a man of integrity would have pulled himself off the browns beat if he found himself unable to be objective.. or at least ask to be removed..
to me, this is absolute proof positive that Grossi is NOT a man of integrity......
I'm not the least bit disappointed.. But a man lost his job, so I'm not going to stand up and applaud either.
I'm not going to applaud about a man losing his job but I will applaud the PD for righting a wrong that has been long overdue. I certainly hope they rework this whole department because maybe I will start subscribing again. I did write them after the Tweet and voiced my displeasure and received a generous and timely response. It was encouraging to read to say the least.

Not sure but I personally hope it's not her. She's as bias as anyone. She used to carry Quinns Jockstrap around for him so bad it was sad. People questioned Quinns arm strength and it was a topic of debate. He threw a pass like 45 yards in the air at Family Day so the Big Headline in the paper the next day was Quinn throws 50 yard bomb..or something along those lines. I wonder if Carrucci can be hired in a dual role?

I'd love that but it would put him in a tough spot, I don't think you can do that job fairly if you are employed by the team. Too hard to really speak your mind.
I would like to see someone brought in from the outside. Maybe someone with NFL connections but not so much Browns connections. Would love that kind of perspective.

You guys are actually pretty pathetic.
All I see on here is a continuous rant about how bad Tony/Mary Kay/Any other Browns writers are. Yet these are the articles that are always quoted when they agree with what you're thinking. They only turn into turds when they say something derogatory to the Browns.
News Flash: Do you have any idea how hard it must be to write something positive nearly every day about a team that has essentially sucked for 20 years?
I live in a small town where the sports writing, when it's actually done locally, actually is horrible. Be careful what you wish for, boys.

Im not a real big fan of Mary Kay but Im glad we are finally done with Grossi. Wonder if he will keep his TV stuff? I would imagine they are going to have to drop him there as well. Not sure.
This was just posted there as well.
Updated: For those saying that Randy Lerner called for Tony Grossi to be moved off the beat, here's an update. Sources tell Scene that, "Randy Lerner and the Browns had zero to do with it. The Plain Dealer acted independently." They never asked the Browns' opinion. They acted internally.
not sure if i need to put the same link up as the previous poster?
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Nobody is asking for positive. How about fair and objective or fair and informative. I don't need a whole article on Tony's opinion and push it as fact. It's not a coincidence that most people have the same opinion of him and I bet if you asked Dieken or Donovan they probably don't think much of him either(Judging by some of the looks Doug gives him).

Not so much Mary Kay as much as Tony. I thought they did a great Job getting Pluto but something happened to Pluto between Akron and here because he is not the same. Mary Kay is okay but she drove me nuts with her coverage of Quinn. I swear she was in love with the guy. I have just been down on the PD for a while.

The only guys that complain about the writers on here are pretty much professional media bashers. I take their opinions with less than a grain of salt.
I've read Tony's and Mary Kay's stuff and it usually seems pretty good to me. As I've said many times the stuff written on the Browns seems to be pretty good quality when compared to what you get in a lot of places.
Most of the griping on here occurs when something is written that doesn't gibe with the Browns' party line. Or ticks off the biggest whiners on the board. That doesn't automatically make it bad.
I think it's easy to make this next prediction: Whoever takes Tony's place will not meet the high journalistic standards that you think you've set.

Are you related to Grossi or something? You seem pretty upset that he got canned for his own ignorance. Grossi has been a ego maniac, and finally got what is coming to him.

I think he may have been good at one time (honestly!) but the complacency of a seniority-based, not a merit-based business, made him fat and happy and egotistical. Also, the union would protect him if mgmt were to actually fire him, as he is one of the older employees in the "system."

It's hard to write for a small paper like the one in Fremont and be incentivized, so to speak, when you know you're getting the same pay as a college kid at Starbucks. ($10-14/hr, even with college degree and 5 years of experience). You could work as a truck driver, janitor and/or general custodian and make much more ($16-23/hr plus benefits) even with no college degree!
The colleges are partially to blame by not being honest with the kids and by not letting them know that the career path they are choosing will never net them a fair standard of living.
Go do PR instead, I tell them. Hopefully the younger ones will listen.
Go Browns!

I'm curious what you mean "fair" standard of living?
Part of it is out of curiousity ... and part comes from what I think the deeper problem is.
With things like message boards, facebook, twitter, blogs, and etc ... anyone and everyone can be a reporter.
Don't get me wrong ... we aren't all 'good' or 'official' or anything ... but part of the job of a journalist / reporter / beat writer is to inform and the other part is to entertain in my opinion.
Grossi seemed to know what he was talking about but he came off as biased and as if his you know what didn't stink. When you combine the fact that he wasn't all that cordial with the fact that a lot of his news was opinion and not just "breaking" ... you can start to see why there may be a shakeup in the news and media industry. I won't argue that individuals are professionals but these days any guy with a computer can relay the information (as in any of us). Is it pretty? Nope. But it does start to squeeze out the Grossi's of the world.

My biggest issue with ALL the sports reporters is the STUPID questions they ask over and over and over again, to coaches and players. Uh Coach.. how do you feel ? Do you think the outcome would have be different if you didn't have 3 turnovers ? How bad did the 5 sacks hurt the offense. DUH ! I want content folks.. When the QB threw that interception was it a bad throw or did the receiver run a bad route ? Your right tackle looks lost out there half the time.. isn't it time to try someone else ? Is it normal for a 2nd rd pick to be a heathy scratch all the time ? Heck.. if your gonna get fired at least do it for a good reason .

What the H is up w/ Florio's last sentence??? I always went easy on the guy w/ so many others hating on him and PFT, but come ON . . . http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...om-browns-beat/Report: Accidental tweet gets Grossi removed from Browns beat Posted by Mike Florio on January 25, 2012, 3:55 PM EST Last week, long-time Browns beat writer Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer inadvertently posted an unflattering message about Browns owner Randy Lerner on Twitter. “He is a pathetic figure, the most irrelevant billionaire in the world,” Grossi said. The tweet was later deleted. As it turns out, Lerner may remain sufficiently relevant to influence the work assignments at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. According to CleveScene.com, Grossi has been removed from the beat. Last week, the newspaper addressed the issue at its website, Cleveland.com: “Last night, Plain Dealer Browns beat reporter Tony Grossi made an inadvertent, inappropriate post to Twitter concerning Browns owner Randy Lerner. Grossi has reached out to Lerner to apologize. The Plain Dealer also apologizes.” Grossi also addressed the situation in a video podcast: “Last night there was a comment attributed to me on my Twitter account. It was inadvertent, it was inappropriate, and I do apologize for it. I’ve reached out to Randy Lerner to apologize to him for it and we’ll just leave it at that. It was inappropriate and not meant to be tweeted, but it was inappropriate nonetheless.” Though no one has explained specifically how it happened that the tweet was posted on Grossi’s page, it appears this is the latest example of someone not understanding how to properly use the “direct message” function. Grossi apparently intended to express his opinion privately to one of his Twitter followers, but he accidentally posted it onto his primary Twitter profile, which can be viewed publicly. And while we know nothing about any other issues or circumstances between Grossi and his bosses, the reaction seems more than a little harsh. Though the not-intended-for-publication message raises potential questions about Grossi’s objectivity when it comes to Lerner, it’s not as if Lerner is actively involved in the management of the team. In many respects, Lerner is an absentee landlord, with little or no interest in doing the things that so many other NFL owners love to do. But while Lerner takes a hands-off approach to the Browns, he has shown a willingness to respond to indignities with aggressive action. In 2008, the Browns ended a preseason partnership with WOIO-TV after the station broadcast a portion of a 911 call made by Lerner’s sister when her daughter drowned. “The recent coverage of the Lerner family tragedy is but the latest, albeit the most shocking and insensitive example of this destructive behavior,” Browns vice president Michael Keenan wrote in a letter to WOIO terminating the contract for “irresponsible journalism.” It’s currently unknown whether Lerner or the Browns requested, suggested, or demanded that Grossi be reassigned. Regardless of how this all came to be, Grossi’s only wrongdoing, in our view, was his failure to properly navigate the Twitter application on his smartphone. Besides, the substance of Grossi’s comments don’t come off to us as objectively offensive or inappropriate. He referred to Lerner as “pathetic” and called Lerner an “irrelevant billionaire.” (I’ve been called much worse than an “irrelevant billionaire,” and I aspire to be much less.) If it turns out that Lerner indeed pushed the Plain Dealer to dump Grossi from the beat for his accidental expression of a private opinion he’s entitled to have, it definitely will be evidence, in our opinion, of a pathetic act by the billionaire owner of a largely irrelevant team.

If I were Tony Grossi I'd want to strangle whoever it was who posted that comment that was attributed to his twitter account.

I guess all I can say is "jealousy".
Who cares if he's a millionaire, a billionaire, a trillionaire, or a hundredaire? Honestly - does his money matter?
Florio makes himself look like an idiot.
Hoping he gets fired too.
