The Browns have hired Tim Hauck as their defensive backs coach. The Cleveland Browns today named Tim Hauck defensive backs coach, the team announced. Hauck comes to the Browns after spending two seasons (2009-10) as an assistant secondary coach with the Tennessee Titans. Prior to joining the Titans, Hauck spent five years as an assistant on the collegiate level, first at his alma mater, the University of Montana (2004-07) and also at UCLA (2008). He enjoyed a 13-year playing career as a safety in the NFL, which included stints with New England (1990), Green Bay (1991-94), Denver (1995-96), Seattle (1997), Indianapolis (1998), Philadelphia (1999-2001) and San Francisco (2002). He originally signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2000 and appeared in 183 career regular season games in addition to eight playoff contests. link

no idea what to think about this hire. he's pretty new for the NFL (3 seasons) and the Titans are the 'other' team that appears good at pass defense until you start look more closely (3rd w/ 6.4YPA, but 21TDs to 11INTs). then again, Tenn struggled to generate a pass rush, so that is a factor there too.

To those who may view Hauck's Bio as a little weak on experience...Browns DC, Dick Jauron was a safety for 8 seasons in the NFL and first coached in the NFL as a DB coach for the Bills in 1985 and the Packers from 1986 to 1994 before being named a DC for the Jags.
Hauck will have a pretty good coach to lean on should he need some help...

Tim Hauck Titans Biography
Tim Hauck enters his second season as the Titans assistant secondary coach and his 15th year in the NFL.
In his first campaign with the Titans, the defense totaled 20 interceptions (16 from the secondary), which ranked eighth best in the NFL.
Hauck joined the staff in 2008, after spending five years in the college ranks. Prior to joining the Titans, he coached safeties at UCLA for a defense that ranked second in the Pac-10 in pass defense. Prior to joining UCLA, he spent four seasons at his alma mater, Montana, coaching the full secondary in 2007 and three years working with the safeties from 2004-2006. In 2007, Montana ranked 10th nationally in pass efficiency defense while totaling 17 interceptions and allowing only eight passing touchdowns.
Hauck also brings the understanding of a 13-year NFL career that included 183 games of experience. He was originally an undrafted free agent with the New England Patriots in 1990 and went on to play with Green Bay (1991-94), Denver (1995-96), Seattle (1997), Indianapolis (1998), Philadelphia (1999-2001) and San Francisco (2002). His greatest season came in 1999, when he started 15 games at safety for the Eagles and totaled 60 tackles and one interception. For two seasons (1991-92) in Green Bay, Hauck and Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil were secondary teammates with the Packers.
An All-American safety (1988-89) at the University of Montana, Hauck ranks third in Grizzly history in tackles (305) and interceptions (15) and twice earned Big Sky Defensive MVP honors.
A Butte, Mont. native, Hauck (12/20/66) and his wife, Denali, reside in Nashville.

one thing I noticed with this hire is how experienced we are overall at coaching on defense (outside of Hauck now) and how inexperienced (NFL-wise) we are overall at coaching on offense. http://www.nfl.com/teams/coaches?coaType=assist&team=CLEDwaine Board - DL - coaching since '90 Bill Davis - LB - NFL since '92 (coaching since '90) Dick Jauron - DC - NFL since '85 Jerome Henderson was the baby of the group starting NFL coaching in 2006. College coach in between. George Warhop - OL - NFL since '95 Whipple - QB - college coach except for '04-06 w/ Pitt, '98 w/ Philly and last year with us. Mike Wilson - total of 6 years of NFL coaching experience, but it's choppy (95/96 w/ Raiders, 04-06 w/ Cardinals, 11 w/ us). I don't know what he did from 07-10.

i actually really like this hire; i've followed this guy's career, and he did a great job turning around tennessee's secondary... his first two years with the titans they gave up top 5 in passing yards allowed if you remember the titans 2009 and 2010 seasons, but in 2011 their secondary was gave up 18th most passing yards. hauck is kind of a no nonsense type of guy, but he breeds excellence and his coaching style is very similar to his play style... great hire, and i expect to see us go after another young corner in this years draft in the first couple rounds, giving hack a chance to work with a very young group of high potential guys; if there is anyone that can turn tj ward into a better coverage safety, hauck is the guy that can do it.

i'm not against bringing in anyone to help the team win, and finnegan is obviously a competitor; sheldon brown just doesn't seem quick enough to keep up with receivers on deeper routes anymore, and i think if we were to bring in finnegan or even draft a cornerback and shift brown to a nickelback type role it would seriously improve our secondary. finnegan garners a lot of disapproval from fans because he has a reputation as a dirty player, but it's impossible to really judge someone's character based on some isolated incidents, and maybe it would benefit us to get a fiery veteran cornerback to provide a spark to our coverage unit.

honestly, all i do with my free time is watch NFL game film and scour the internet to expand my knowledge of the game, and try to get a better idea of who the browns could bring in that would fit the mold of the franchise; i've sent a bunch of emails to our front office in the past with recommendations and what i deemed to be pretty fluid, straightforward analysis, but i am not sure if they actually read any of it (and even if they did, they probably wouldn't actually take any of my advice); doesn't hurt to offer my opinion as a fan though... i try to stay on top of what's happening on the sidelines as well, since it's always fascinated me how there are so many more personnel actively involved in different facets of the team than just simply head coach, offensive/defensive/special teams coordinator; in the past, i have been a candidate to attend almost all of the training camp sessions, and make (usually unsuccessful) attempts to talk with some of the more specialized coaches.
there was actually one time where i talked to a couple coaches and two tight ends after a training camp session (i believe the players were darnell dinkins and steve heiden), and i had a chance to learn a bit more about what goes on in the film room, and how ideas for playcalling and other things get generated, and ultimately the different motivators that coaches try to use to get players to get the best out of them. i just thought it was a unique opportunity, and i think its always great when a fan can have a chance to meet their heroes who they see play every week. i think my goal one day would be to be a consultant for the browns front office, but i am still looking for advice on getting into that field.

I say........... Nonsense! He even says he wasn't sure but thinks it was Heiden and Dinkens. These guys both played on our team multiple years. Heiden was good!
If I meet Steve Heiden and/or Dinkins, I know that I met the guys. There's absolutely no question. I only know one NFL football player, and he has been to different practice squads (although managed to get a superbowl ring with the Bucs, someone got hurt and he was put on the active roster for the superbowl) But yeah, his name is Idris Price. No question about that one.....
You meet some Browns players, not sure if you have their names right, but they were interested in your coaching ideas? Give me a break...............

lol, honestly i wasn't giving them coaching ideas, i just had a chance to talk to them after a training camp session; i know it was darnell dinkins, and either steve heiden or maybe aaron shea (was he even on the team at that point? now that i think of it i think the player was actually not a tight end, but a safety named justin sandy who i don't believe ended up making the final roster)... we didn't really talk about what i thought the team should do, i just asked them questions about what it's like to be on an nfl team, and a couple coaches what their experience was like. in no way was i any more than an overzealous fan in their eyes, so i don't want to create the impression that i was preaching any philosophies to them.
and nah, i didn't ask for their autographs, i figured that would be a bit tacky given the context. it was more that i had been to almost all the camps that year and gotten to know one of the security guys who gave me the hook up to meet a few of the players, but it was a big experience for me getting a chance to meet my heroes. but one day i would like to be on the other side of that discussion, so that's my goal right now.
and before you ask, no i have not met charlie batch.

Couple of quick points
1. we'd like to have an idea of your age.. it will help us a lot.
2. Given your choices of players to pimp/support coupled with your desire to be in a consulting role with an NFL team, may I suggest that the Steelers need a consultant.. I really think they could use your help.
And the best part of that, if you go to work for the Steelers, you will in effect be helping the Browns..

back to topic: i think this is a really good hire, maybe its just because of my Montana days.
He was never the most athlethic guy, but he was smart and savvy. The eagles tried for years to move on from him, and time after time he just kept surfacing. He was rock steady and a smart player. I would presume that the Heckert connection is how he landed here. I'm excited to see what he can do for the secondary. If Hauck can just teach these guys some of the instictiveness that he played with and combine that with athletic ability that he lacked- we will be on to something.

Can you teach instinct? 
I get what you're saying. Try to get these guys so well trained that it almost becomes instinct. When they see something, they react without thinking about it.
