Looking at the free agent QB list, I see that Jason Campbell is going to be a free agent and might be looking to move on since Carson Palmer came to Oakland.
I'm not pimping the guy but just throwing his name out as a possibility. Rather than using any of our high draft picks on a QB, pick up a veteran free agent QB and continue to fill needs via the draft.
The Browns could replace Seneca Wallace with Jason Campbell as the veteran QB.
Let Campbell compete for the starting with McCoy.

I've actually been a huge advocate for getting Campbell since the end of the offseason.
It would be a great competition between him and McCoy.

I agree and I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned much before; the raiders will presumably go into next year with Palmer (they invested too much in him to let him rot on the bench or get rid of him), which suddenly creates a situation where a red hot jason campbell could be on the market. i have always believed in campbell's talent, there were just times where he seemed out of rhythm which you can attribute a lot to the fact that the redskins had a very poor supporting cast during his time there... he isn't exactly cam newton, but i think there is a comparison to be made between the two. another one that jumps out at me for some reason is aaron brooks, similar play styles, and they are definitely quarterbacks that can be successful for a team, especially in a role where maybe they are serving to mentor a developing qb. just look at what happened when brooks finally retired and brees took over.

I don't believe that QB is a position to be "filled just to be filled". I think that a team must have a superior QB is they want to win championships. If they simply want to be competitive ..... then any QB might do ...... but a team needs that exceptional QB to win championships.
I am tired of trying to get to "competitive". I want to find players who will help us get to the point of competing for championships ... not just to try and win a few games.

i completely agree with this sentiment, there is no sense in getting a quarterback to lead your team to just the point of getting into the playoffs; it is not like baseball where getting to the playoffs puts you in a crapshoot position where you could go on a nice streak and end up winning a world series, i believe in the NFL you truly need to have a dominant team that is driven by a good leader (and obviously there are the dilfer-type exceptions, but their defense was also tremendous)... but i feel like campbell is a veteran qb who has experience playing in tough situations, and while he has struggled at certain points in his career he seems to be at a point in his career where he has a lot of knowledge to bring to the table in a mentorship-type role to go along with drafting a quarterback this year. i don't think campbell will win us a super bowl, but i do think adding him would improve our overall prospects in the next decade if we can bring in a good quarterback this year and give him time to learn our system. and at the same time he is probably the best available option in free agency, so if the stars were to align at some other weak positions, i think he could become an elite quarterback.

I was a fan of Jason Campbell since before he was drafted. I still like him, I know he's got some things wrong with his game, but he's got alot of things right too. I'd love to see him on the Browns, if he were I'd want to see him play.
I think you can argue he's a top 20 qb in the NFL at any givin point, when healthy, .. he may not be but you can make the argument. I can't make that arguement for the current Browns Qb, not yet anyway. I mean with Campbell, he would at least have a chance to have a really good game, maybe not, but once in 20 games he's going to have a really good game. I mean if they got Campbell at this point in his career, it would at least be as good as when they got Delhomme at the end of his career. Provided Campbell gets healthy that is.
Go Browns! Get offense! Hooray!
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Oh yeah... and are we really in the Jason Campbell thread again? I'd rather stick with Wallace. Maybe even McCoy.

My ideal situation would be to pick up either Campbell or Flynn in FA, draft Tannehill or a latter round prospect and then, next year, let Flynn / Campbell and McCoy battle it out for the starting position and let the rookie sit and learn UNTIL HE IS READY.
We can then address WR, LB, DE and RT with our first picks.
I would really like it if we could trade down to between 8 and 12 and pick up an extra 2nd and a 4th this year and maybe a 3rd next year too. I would have no problem with that as we have no chance with Luck and Griffin III seems too much of a gamble at 4. Let someone else gamble. If it was Barkley, I'd take the chance.

the problem is that there are no "superior QBs ' just walking the streets.
Which QB that is avaliable either in the draft or FA is better than Campbell?
top FAs
Campbell Orton Flynn
Top draft picks
Luck RGIII Tannehill
Which is better than JC that we could actually snag?

Not 100 % sure, but I think it was either Django or diem or somebody that was pimping the beejeesus out of Campbell a year or so ago..
He was realy doing a pretty good job until he he got injured last year. so I'm not sure the raiders will let him get away.. not sure.

Campbell is an upgrade over both McCoy and Wallace...but not significant enough
a stop gap guy like Campbell or Orton only makes sense if we intend to draft a QB fairly high who needs more seasoning (Tannehill, Foles)
Signing Flynn would mean he's our guy for the next 2 seasons minimum because of the contract he'll demand
Drafting Luck or RG 3 means they are the guy
If we go 1 of the above routes, I don't see how we go into the season with Colt as starter...only option would be if we draft a project QB and no FA...then he gets another season

we can easily draft RGIII #4 and let Colt start the season. it's been done numerous times with QBs drafted that high. we would be signalling that RGIII is our QB of the future, but when the future starts is a little hazier.

Man I hate these options being thrown around...It SUX not having a REAL QB...
Campbell?...No thanks...
Flynn?...Man I hope Miami gets this chump...This has Holcomb written all over it...
Tannehill?...No thanks...This kid's a major major project...Way 2 risky when u consider a 1st round pick...
I'm at the point I hope Flynn goes to Miami...Indy takes Luck and ships Manning to the Skins...
And we go RGIII at 4 and save ALL our picks to manuever a little in rounds 2-4...I have doubts about Griffin too...But if we see future QB in him then just GO WITH IT...
We can get really good...Really quick...IF we do this right both draft and FA...
Go Browns!!!

I was not a fan of Campbell when he was coming out of college but he has developed into a solid NFL Qb which is something I think the Browns need. We have had all these Qb's pass through who are not starting quality NFL Qb's either because of talent or lack of seasoning or both. We know this guy is a mediocre NFL Qb. And yes that is a major upgrade over McCoy (as of his development to date) and Wallace.
Bring in a guy like Campbell (if recovered from injury) and we know what we are getting. Then we can see how good/bad our wr's, oline and our scheme really are. We also start winning games. Maybe 8-8 is nothing to be proud of but one of the things Savage was right about is that we need to get past this culture of losing. Bad teams need to learn how to win. When the Browns are up 3 in the 4th quarter we expect to lose. When the Steelers are down 3 in the 4th quarter they expect to win. Why? Because that is what we/they have seen. I truly believe those expectations become self-fulfilling prophesies. Success breeds success.
Then when the draft comes we don't feel the need to over value a qb. If we can get Luck for 2 1st rounders (not gonna happen) then great we do it, if not then that is fine too. Tannehill? Ugh. No offense Mourg. He is a 3-4 year project at best. RGIII - i am not sold on. I would prefer to pass on him and eye up next years draft for a Qb prospect I believe in, not just take a guy because he is the "best available" in this year's draft.
Campbell will never be that great Qb to put the team on his shoulders and carry them to the super bowl but he is a guy who can lead this team to respectability. One step at a time. And frankly at this point respectability is a couple steps away.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

dj...I'm not thinking of Campbell as a "stop gap", but as possibly being "the guy" to lead the Browns to the playoffs and a chance at a Super Bowl.
Jason Campbell's career stats are not stop gap, nor has he played like a stop gap QB. His numbers are solid while playing for two teams that were in "less than elite".
How many would consider Eli Manning a "stop gap" qb?
Compare Jason Campbell's career stats to Super Bowl winning QB, Eli Manning's stats...
..STATS..CMP....ATT.....YDS...CMP%....AVG.....TD....LNG...INT...FUM...RAT.. Career....1296....2,131...14,417..60.8.......6.77......74.....84.....50......32.....82.8.. Career....2291....3,921...27,579..58.4.......7.03....185.....99....129......50.....82.1..
Campbell is 30 yrs old and has been in the NFL for 7 seasons but in game experience and wear and tear on his body, Campbell has approx 5 yrs. As you can see above, Eli Manning has almost twice the mileage on his arm/body as Campbell does, in the number of passes thrown with the point being, Campbell is not all used up and his best years may yet be ahead of him.
Again, I want to stress this, I'm not pimping the guy but trying to point out that he may be an option at QB for the Browns to consider. Is Campbell a better option than... ...Seneca Wallace? ...Colt McCoy? ...Matt Flynn? ...RGIII? ...Ryan Tannehill?
Here is my opinion... ...is JC a better option than Wallace?...YES...not much to argue here. ...is JC a better option than McCoy?...YES...McCoy could continue to develop. ...is JC a better option than Matt Flynn?...YES...Here is why... To acquire Flynn could be very costly in dollars for sure but could be costly in draft picks, too! If the Packers franchise Flynn then trade him for the best deal that means draft picks. I have little doubt that there could be teams willing to pay the Packers price, even if they do franchise him. The Browns cannot afford to get into that kind of bidding war for a QB who has so little game experience to judge him on and the Browns cannot afford to spend their draft picks to acquire Flynn or any other QB. ...is JC a better option than RGIII?...YES...a rookie who has an "unknown" amount of potential vs a 7 yr veteran. ...is JC a better option than Ryan Tannehill?...YES...same answer as above.
Keep in mind, Jason Campbell is but another option the Browns could be considering to upgrade the talent at QB, especially if Matt Flynn is franchised by the Packers. The Browns are still building the team via the draft and need to continue using their draft picks to add quality talent at positions of need, on both sides of the ball.

If we use your logic, we should never draft anyone, because any average player with experience will "always" be better than the "unknown" amount of potential any rookie possesses.
I think that Campbell is a decent QB. He is probably about average. I want better than average at the most important position on the football field. I want a great player at the only position, outside of the Center snapping the ball, that touches the ball on each and every offensive snap.
Frankly I hope that most, if not all of the teams reportedly interested in jumping up for RG3 decide to go after free agent QBs instead.

jc..
It might be worth noting...while researching Jason Campbell's, yearly stats, his best performances came in 2008 and 2009, when Jim Zorn was the Redskins HC. Jim Zorn came to Redskins after spending 7 yrs (2001-2007) as the Seahawks QB coach under head coach Mike Holmgren.
This from Zorn's wiki profile... ...During his time in Seattle, Zorn worked with Seahawks Head Coach Mike Holmgren and Offensive Coordinator Gil Haskell in implementing the team’s offense while also furthering the development of the team’s quarterbacks.
web page
Jason Campbell played in the Jim Zorn's form of Mike Holmgren's west coast offense when Zorn was the Redskins HC and had his best performances as a QB in those 2 seasons.
If Holmgren needs to know something about Campbell's ability, all he has to do is talk to Zorn.
Also worth noting...Jim Zorn is currently the QB coach of the KC Chiefs. Zorn has an excellent record of developing QBs in the NFL. Before the Dan Snyder hired Zorn as their HC, he first hired Zorn as the Skins offensive coordinator. Jim Zorn might be an excellent fit for the Browns offensive coordinator job..stressing "might".
Here is a link to Zorn's KC bio... web page

Actually, I had forgotten all about Zorn. He would be a quality candidate.
I just wonder whether or not KC would let him make a move with the Crennel taking over?

I agree, I'd like Zorn. And Zorn is QB Coach, so moving to O-Coordinator isn't a lateral move. I don't think it matters if he has the Ass Head Coach title or not. QB Coach to O-Coordinator is still a move up.
And if the Chiefs haven't hired him as OC yet, we should still be able to interview him.
I'd definitely be interested in Jim Zorn. I always thought he got a bad rep from Wash. I'd like to see him as an OC period. I think he was high on the list of guys I wanted to get last year..........

Vince Young is younger than Jason Campbell, has a better win %, and can run.
Young finished his tenure in TN with his best year (98 QB rating) but was ousted because Jeff Fisher stubbornly did not want him. All Young needs is a change of scenery.
Better upside than all the other FAs mentioned, and much better than Colt. My favorite stat on Young is he led the league last year in compl % on deep balls. He will immediately stretch the field, and the Browns NEED this!
Beat the Giants this year and threw for 400 vs the Patriots.
And....HE WINS!

not sure about that. Andy Reid is awfully good at making QBs look better than they really are. And yet, VY had 4TDs to 9INTs throwing 58% and going 1-2. He did have a good YPA at 7.6 but was only throwing 120yds per game.
there were also some stories about VY really struggling to pickup the WCO playbook.
doesn't seem like a real fit here despite the fun storyline (best 2 Tx QBs dueling for the starting gig).

Assistant Coaches are Assistant Coaches no matter what title they hold. The only promotion from Assistant Coach at any level from 3rd Assistant in charge of touchback on kickoffs to Offensive Coordinator/Assistant Head Coach is to Head Coach. Any other move can be blocked by the team the coach is currently under contract to.
Most teams will not stop a coach from leaving if it is a step up the ladder .... but they do not have to let him go if they don't want to.

Jason Campbell wouldn't be the guy of the future, but I wouldn't mind grabbing him and RG3 this offseason. RG3 seems, to me, to be a guy that could be elite, but just needs some time. Rushing a guy like him into starting duties would just be a waste of a pick.
I could also see Campbell being the steal of this offseason. The guy really did some nice stuff in Oakland. Oakland has some talent in its offense, but was a mess (and would've continued to be a mess) until they got some stability at the QB position. JC did that for them, and I give him props for that. Further, he's proven himself WAY more than Flynn. Flynn's had some really nice games, but Campbell has been a starter everywhere he's been and has weathered some brutal storms already in his career (i.e. Redskins and Raiders).
That said, he's not the QB of the future. Mac had it backwards when he said JC's 7 years were more like 5 years. He's played behind some brutal olines and been knocked around quite a bit. Plus you can toss a season-ending shoulder injury on top of that. That's wear and tear.
Barring any red-flags with his health, I give him the "We gotta get this guy" seal of approval (and not the sarcastic one). Just get me a QB to groom behind him.
There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

i'd rather just go with Colt until RGIII is ready if that's what we are going to do.
I agree that Campbell is more proven than Flynn, but Flynn has alot more upside. Campbell is what he is. A QB that will get a rating in the low to mid 80s and not turn the ball over a ton.

Exactly, that's why I like him. He's not the guy of the future. He'll come in, hold down the fort (as he has so far in his career during a couple stops) until we're ready to plug in the guy. I think he'll do a good enough job so that a raw, young QB won't be rushed into service. I think that's why I like him. I see him coming in here and not stinking it up enough so he can hang onto the job, but not good enough so that we fear letting him go when our young guy is ready to take the reins. That's like the sweet spot for veteran FA quarterbacks!

so why not run Colt out there and have a chance he plays well so that we can trade him for picks?

Because there is some idiotic movement from people on this board that you need to be good immediately, and if not, they'll tear apart every flaw you have, thereby thinking they enhance their "get a new qb now" agenda.

I agree, I'd like Zorn. And Zorn is QB Coach, so moving to O-Coordinator isn't a lateral move.
We had a big discussion about that and you are incorrect., Anything under HC or Asst. HC is considered a lateral move..
I know I know,, I don't get it either,,

If I'm not mistaken this is like three years running that there is a Jason Campbell off season thread?

3/4 I believe. He signed a 2yr deal in Oakland, so there shouldn't have been on last offseason.

Yikes, I think that's a bit harsh. I know it's the off-season for us already and people get grouchy around here during this time, but you should dial down the aggression.
I think it's a foregone conclusion that the FO is at least looking for an upgrade at the QB position. How hard they're looking is definitely up for debate. I'm definitely pulling for McCoy, I'm a homer when it comes to the Browns, but the simple fact is that McCoy was a 3rd round pick. Expectations should be set accordingly, but were artificially pumped up by fans. We really haven't invested anything into him, as far as QBs go. Bringing in a vet to compete with him is the best course of action, in my opinion, for the short run, but then you also have a high-potential guy waiting in the wings. Some are saying that guy will be Tannehill. Knowing nothing about Tannehill, I'm saying that guy is RG3.
Anyways, I really don't have a problem with McCoy starting another year, but I don't think he really reached out and grabbed the position for his own. There are enough questions about his game to bring in a vet that will actually push him, and we need to plan for the future in case he doesn't pan out.
In short, McCoy was a 3rd-rounder. He wasn't brought in here to be our savior.

LOL,, I think you are right..
But let's be honest,, Jason Campbell isn't the stud/elite QB that a few want us to give up our draft to move up to get.
he's a stop gap at best. Someone to put in place while a young guy learns the ropes..
The problem is, we have one of those AND we have a guy that started most games last year. both are under contract and both have the beginnings of the system that is being installed.
Why o why in heavens name would we waste a dime on a guy that would serve the same purpose as McCoy and/or Wallace.
If you want a starter and he's there when you draft, take him.. But please, no more has beens/never was guys..
