god I hope not, thats all we need is to over pay a washed up QB who sits the bench.
If Mcnabb wants to come onboard as a coach of some sort, great, but as a player, lets not waste the money.

I remember having this same debate with one of my buddies about Kurt Warner. Right coaches, right scheme at the right time can do a lot for someones career. Still eating my words for saying Kurt is scared to drop back, he will never even make a decent backup at this point.

I'd be shocked. But then, it wouldn't be the first time

I don't want a coach who as a player didn't know the rules (OT), showed up out of shape to training camps (and TO said out of shape in SB), and wasn't known as an extremely hard-worker.
So, let's just say no to McNabb.

I'll pass on McNabb. I believe that his better days are behind him, and I also don't see the team tossing Wallace overboard to bring in McNabb.
If we bring in a rookie, then it will almost certainly be McCoy, Wallace, and the rookie. Depending on who the rookie is, and where he is drafted, he could either sit for a year, or step immediately into the starting role.

I dont see how this is a bad thing. Are there better candidates out there? probably. Are they willing to come to Cleveland? probably not. There is no way he can make it worse than not having anyone last season. Im glad he is on the team.
As far as previous OC hires since 1999, this one is the most credible. I think that is something all Browns fans should be pleased with. I didn't follow Philly while he was there, so I'm with the group in the middle of the road. At least we have an OC with experience now.

I think that this is about the biggest thing we have going, now, with our OC.
Granted, you have a guy like Bruce Ariens that has gone on to have some success elsewhere, but that's as close to good as we've had.... and he wasn't all that good when he was here. Additionally, Pittsburgh didn't renew his contract because Ariens is too pass-happy (something we saw with him as well)... that's gotta tell ya something.

It's easier to be a good OC when you have a QB to work with.

I'm not necessarily saying McCoy is our future, however, he has only 1 full year under center in one of the most inept offenses last year. With an established OC and possibly some weapons, we will be able to see what McCoy is truly capable of at the NFL level. He was a winner in Texas, why not evaluate Colt with a team around him?

Oh please. The simple fact is that 2 of our most hated OC have gone on to succeed elsewhere. Arians has won a Super Bowl. Daboll improved the Dolphins offense tremendously in his only year there. On top of that is Chud going to Carolina and doing a lot of good things there with a rookie named Cam Newton ...... Those are our last 3 offensive coordinators, as far as I can recall ......... and all 3 have had some degree of success since leaving Cleveland. Why? What is the common denominator? So ..... if we have OCs who could succeed elsewhere, let's look at the other side of the equation. How have the QBs we have let go fared elsewhere? Which have had even good years since leaving the Browns? How has Brady Quinn done since leaving Cleveland? How about Charlie Frye? Derek Anderson? Kelly Holcomb? Tim Couch? How many starts do all of these guys have combined since leaving Cleveland? How many games have they won? You need a plus QB (or a great defense) to compete in today's NFL. You can win games with an average type guy ... but usually just enough to fall short of the playoffs ... or get blown out in the 1st round. You need an elite QB to win a Super Bowl. Both of the Giants and Patriots "best" receivers are UDFA. (Cruz and Welker) What key thing do they have that we don't have? An offensive coordinator? Hell, can you even name the offensive coordinators on the Giants or Patriots? I can't. Do the Patriots even have an OC? Plus ... if you look at the OC position ....... look at Shurmur. He was touted as the reason that Bradford had the quality rookie season he had. Did he suddenly become stupid in a year? Cross OC off your list. We have an OL that is, at least, at the middle level of the NFL. I don;t know how the NFL rates OL play .... but they have ours rated at 18th in the NFL. That's ahead of the Jets, and Packers, and Cowboys, Broncos, and Steelers ......and 49'ers ... Bears ....... Rams ...... and so on. Room to improve? Sure. Did teams with 'worse" OL do better than we did? I seem to recall a few of those teams in the playoffs. We have a top 10 TE in Watson as far as both blocking and catching. Alex Smith was a huge help filling in as a backup. Moore has some value ..... even though he can't block at all. Overall, as a group, I really like our TEs. We just stopped throwing to them. We have receivers who have gone up and down with our QBs. Massaquoi averaged almost 18 yards/catch as a rookie. He somehow got open then. Of course ..... now he just sucks ... along with everyone else on offense .......... because it simply can't be that we have a problem at QB. No ... that's just not possible. Cribbs has gotten better each year. he had to practically get down on his knees and beg for a long TD pass to be thrown to him. he was wide open enough to have time to do it too. We could draft WR .... but if no one will throw them the ball, we might as well line up in a wishbone and run all day long. I also find it interesting that our passing game didn't completely fall apart at the end of the season when we lost our starting QB (McCoy) ..... TE (Watson) ..... backup TE (Smith) ....... slot receiver (Norwood) ...... and had to play 3 quality defenses. It didn't improve ... but it also didn't drop off at all. Why didn't it? One more thing. People make fun of Blaine Gabbert ....... but he was a rookie, thrown into the fire, in an offense he was completely unprepared to run ..... with possibly the worst receivers known to man. He was terrible. He completed 50% of his passes for 2214 yards, 12 TD, 11 INT, and 5.36 yards/pass attempt. He had only 25 passes of 20+ yards in 413 attempts. Just awful. McCoy completed 57% of his passes for 2733 yards, 14 TD, 11 INT, and 5.9 yards/attempt. he had 26 pass plays of 20+ yards in 463 pass attempts. Awful too? I'd say so.

I have long held that you can evaluate a QB regardless of the team around him based strictly on his own play.
If he has receivers that drop the ball, fine. Was the ball thrown to the right spot? Was the pass on time? Was it placed properly to allow the receiver to make a play after the catch? (VITAL in the WCO) Does the QB make quick decisions? Does he go through his progressions quickly and properly? Does he understand the offense? How does he work in the pocket? Can he find throwing lanes? Does he properly feel pressure and move the minimal amount he needs to to elude that pressure, or does he break and run when pressured? Does he maintain his awareness down the field when pressured? The list goes on and on ..... and none of those things have anything to do with whether or not the QB has great talent around him or not.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Im just asking because I really dont understand one thing that I keep hearing about and that is RG3's scrambling ability and how he can move out of the pocket and gain yds down field yet when McCoy did it he gets creamed for not standing in the pocket.
Why was that such a bad thing for McCoy yet a skill for RGIII that makes him better?
This could be a question to you YTB or to anyone in general.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Actually, RG3 isn't a running QB. I know that sounds strange ..... but they do run a lot of running plays for him on options and such. However, when he is in the pocket, he is usually looking to make plays down the field throwing the ball first. if all hell breaks loose he can run .... but he is definitely a throw first QB.
RG3 also will move within the pocket to escape pressure and find a throwing lane. He ran for 700 yards this past year .... but he's never been that guy who runs for 10 yards/carry like some college QBs do. He runs for about 4 yards/carry ...... and many of those carries are planned option runs. He can break contain and run if he needs to ..... but I don't see him as a "running QB".
Comparing RG3 and Luck, RG3 threw about the same number of passes Luck did this past season. (402 to 404) RG3 ran 179 times for 699 yards and 10 TDs (3.9 per carry) and Luck ran 47 times for 150 yards and 2 TDs. (3.2 per carry) I think that Griffin's offense called for him to run a little bit more ..... but that's not necessarily his strength. (although he does have elite speed)

Excellent question.
However, it's the ABC disease that answers it.
If ONLY we had a qb - just look at Cam - he increased his teams scoring. (what was their record again?)
Same old thing would happen if we got Luck, RG, or Flynn - they get 1 1/2 years, 2 tops - if we aren't in the playoffs, they sucked and we'll be looking for the next "can't miss qb" in the draft.
Hey, I'm hungry. I could go out to a restaurant and order a filet mignon, but that would take time. Instead, I'll just microwave a hot pocket - then complain that my hot pocket wasn't as good as a filet - totally ignoring that I didn't want to "waste" time.

It doesn't take a very critical analysis to see that the Panthers' bottom-5 defense had a lot more to do with their record this season than their top-5 offense did. But keep on marching out that argument. If the Browns were scoring 25 a game and giving up 27, would you say that our offense just wasn't doing enough, or that our defense should be doing a lot more?
The Panthers increased their win total from the previous season by 4 wins. The Browns regressed by one. Then again, we had a "rookie" QB and a first-time head coach in a lockout-shortened offseason, right?

There are at least 2 different ways to scramble.
One being the Qb drops back, looks for read #1 if covered then read #2 ... until the pocket starts to collapse. At that point if there is a big opening up the middle he takes it, if the space is to the outside he rolls out and keeps looking down the field. If a receiver comes open he hits them with the pass if not he pulls the ball down and runs for a few yards.
The other is: the Qb drops back looks for read #1. If covered then he panics. Despite the pocket being intact he roll out, often into the rush, often resulting in a sack or if he avoids the end throws an ill advised pass that if lucky falls incomplete but too often results in an INT.
I have not seen enough of RGIII to know what kind of QB he is but I have seen enough of Colt to know that he is the second kind of scrambler. Will he always be that kind of QB? Unknown. But once a Qb deelops that habit it is very hard to break.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Would the fact that the browns d wasn't very good change your mind?
In a quick scan, I found only the Colts that had more runs against them than the Browns did.
Hmm.........is that because our d gave up points early, and we were playing from behind most games?
You would say it's because our o didn't score. A fair minded person would say our d was so "good" against the pass because other teams didn't pass much against us.
Regardless, if we were scoring 50 points a game, but giving up 51, I'd say " we lost". If we score 10 pts. a game, but give up 9, I'd say "we won".
What was your point again? Oh, Cam's defense cost them games - not the fact that he couldn't score enough - it was his d, right?

i think you missed what arch was trying to say. Arch is talking about time....experience....waiting for something to be done....however you want to take it....i happen to agree with it. We're the micro-wave generation, and we can't even follow directions there....if the directions for a hot pocket say 1 1/2 minutes i'll call anyone here a bald face liar if they can't admit to ever taking one out 5-10 seconds sooner take something like madden.... why take the time to learn how to play, when you can just hack the stats of the players? My son used to do this crap....he was probably 9, and hated losing. He's playing with NE and a hacked qb named after himself. I had the browns....he's owning me, talkin' smack, so i get serious down like 3 td's. He's doing stuff like fake punting on 4th and 10 from his own 20. I'm trying to teach him that he needs to punt for field position, and he says, "why would i listen to you, you want to win" needless to say, a few of those failed fake punts....a few fumbles, and some time i get the lead with 7 seconds left....my ex looked at me like i was a big jerk he's crying cause he lost...i tell him to finish the game....thats when i learned that i shouldn't be distracted by chicks during football...instead of flubbing it, i boot it to welker, and he returns the damn thing for a td....thank God we don't have cheer-leaders....lol so much for my lesson in taking the time to learn...hehe The cleveland browns just need to grown and learn...replace and upgrade where you can...but give time....time....
Attitude is everything....FEAR THE ELF!!!

Change my mind in what respect? Probably not, but you've gotta be more specific. And, though the Browns D wasn't great, they were a lot better than the Panthers' D. Maybe it was just fool's gold because you could beat the Browns by scoring 14 points, but if that's the case maybe we shouldn't be heaping praise on Dick Jauron, no?

When you average 25 points a game, and score at least 21 points in 12 of 16 games (27+ in 8 of those games), but only win 6 games, I think its safe to say that the defense is probably the most pressing issue to correct.

No, his point is far more transparent than that: he has stated ad nauseum that Cam Newton did not make the Panthers better because they still finished only 6-10 with him.
Anyways, I'm not going to belabor the point any further, since this thread is about Brad Childress.
Congrats on your victory.

And, at the end of the day, you still lost, right?
I guess Cam's team can be glad they didn't trade 2 or 3 first round picks to get him, as they obviously still need help.

Hope we can build a perfect world for him to succeed and thrive (and survive) in. I think he is better than he was allowed to be, but he got more frustrating to watch as the season wore on IMO. All Purp's comments seem worthy here. So many holes, so few picks.
