WOW....LOL You really want a QB don't you

I do too. But with a team as bad as the Browns some times you have to curb your enthusiasm. My biggest concern is that we go out and get us a shiny new quarterback and then put him out on the field to see what he's got. Problem is we haven't really addressed the offensive line quite yet, and we're about four receivers short of a load, so the guy looks like a bum. Bums are easy to come by in the NFL, apparently, because we've had our share of them over the years. Cleveland has become the place where quarterbacks go to let their careers die. I'm thinking there's more wrong with the team than who's under center. We don't dare pass on one if he falls to us at #4 but I just don't see the sense in trading our draft to reach for one.

But this thread isn't about quarterbacks. It's about signing a running back before he hits free agency. So far it's all just rumors and nothing with any meat on it's bones. I really want to see him back on the team. We'll need him if we ever get to the point where we have a lead and it's time to grind out a win by eating the clock. That's what your running game is all about, eating that clock. You pass for points but you still have to run to seal the deal.

Teams used t win with defense and a strong running game.

the 49ers, Ravens, Texans all seemed pretty good at both. Saints also had a very strong running game (just not 1 guy). there's more than 1 way to win.

and, I do not buy the WCO means no top running game argument I have seen either. the Eagles, Vikings, Saints, and Texans all run some variation of the WCO and all finished in the top10 of rushing.

all that being said, I don't think we need to shift entirely in that direction. just that we do need playmakers and if we can get one, we should not ignore him just because he is a RB. we need to draft the best players available and if we decide that is Richardson, then we should snatch him up (and if we can trade down, pocket an extra high pick and still get him, then all the better).

Chiefs Free Agency: Peyton Hillis Could Make Sense To Reunite With Brian Daboll
Feb

by Matt Conner

Read More: Jamaal Charles (RB - KAN), Peyton Hillis (RB - CLE), Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Browns

When it comes to free agency analysis and predictions, the Kansas City Chiefs are usually predicted to land some sort of running back amid the veterans available. BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been discussed here already since former Patriots seem to wash up on the shores of Kansas City (figuratively speaking) every year since Scott Pioli was brought in. Now Peyton Hillis is being mentioned because of his ties with new Chiefs offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

Of course, none of this makes sense unless the Chiefs need a running back, but they definitely will address the position in some way this offseason. Jamaal Charles will return from a torn ACL next season. Rehab is reportedly going well, but such an injury is going to be a risky comeback. Thomas Jones is getting older and the team will need more of a bruiser type, especially in the red zone. Enter a guy like Hillis.

Daniel Wolf writes, "It seems Hillis is destined to test the free agent waters and he may not have to look far since his former offensive coordinator could be looking to add another rusher into the mix with his new team. In 2010, Hillis broke out under Brian Daboll's offense and Daboll is now the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

"The Chiefs do not need a starting running back since they have Jamaal Charles, but what they do need is an insurance policy in case Charles is not fully recovered from the ACL injury he suffered in September ... Hillis would probably have to take less to play more of a backup role, but he also might need a change of scenery since it seems the Browns are more or less fed up with him."

Hillis is coming off of a dramatic year where it seemed that both he and the Browns were at odds with each other, and Hillis ended up a frustrated player with only 3 touchdowns on the season. He rushed only 161 times for 587 yards, a far cry from the season that landed him on the cover of Madden 2012. Yet that could be the perfect grab for a team like the Chiefs who will find a good bargain in Hillis and a player motivated to turn the corner in a new town.

Certainly nothing concrete there.., just another story on Hillis

10 of the top 15 teams in rushing last year did not make the playoffs.

Teams 32, (won the Super Bowl) 29, and 27 did make the playoffs.

Team 31 (Titans) was 9-7.

Teams are using the short passing game as a substitute for a pure running game. It's not a question of whether they are doing it, it is happening.

Teams are using a variety of players in the run game, as opposed to having that one "stud".

Like I said earlier, I would love a great RB .... but we have more pressing needs. If we still ran the Mangini offense, then maybe a RB at 4 might make sense. However, we don't. We now run the WCO, and that relies upon passing, passing, and passing ....... even on 3rd and 1 or 2.

As far as rushing attempts ..... 5 of the top 10 teams in the NFL last year in rushing attempts made the playoffs ...... 5 did not. 5 of the team in the top 10 in rushing yards last year made the playoffs, 5 did not. 5 of the top 10 teams in rushing TDs made the playoffs, 5 did not.

3rd down converted percentage ...... top 5 teams were the Saints, Chargers, Packers, Steelers, and Patriots. These are all passing oriented teams.

In the bottom 5 in 3rd downs converted? The Broncos and 49'ers. (2 great running teams)

Running the football is not the end all/be all of the NFL any more. It's important ..... but not vital. Having one guy who can carry the load used to be the ideal. Not anymore. If you only have that one RB, and he gets hurt, then you're out of business.

I am also going to check one of your assumptions here in a moment, but my browser is doing funny stuff and I don't want to lose all of this ......... stuff. lol

And I certainly do not mean to imply that the run game is completely unimportant. I do think that it is far, far more important to be able to run the ball when you want to run, than just being able to run the ball overall.

The old saying was that you score with passing, but win games at the end with the run game. That may be ...... and probably the reason why some winning teams are higher up in the rushing totals are because they ice games using the run. Other teams played from behind a lot more, (like the Giants) and did not have that opportunity.

I do think that the old saying "You win in the NFL by running the ball and stopping the run" is outdated. I think that you win today more my passing the ball effectively and aggressively, and stopping the pass. Thus, given the options I was originally given, I think that I would probably go for another plus CB and get a great defensive backfield.

Just my humble opinion.

Thanks, Daman . . .

I guess this counts, too.

It’s an easy year to avoid overpaying running backs

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 21, 2012, 10:44 AM EST

The best free agent running backs aren’t going anywhere. The rest of the free agent running backs aren’t too inspiring.

Perhaps this is the year where NFL teams realize you don’t need to overpay runners in free agency.

Ray Rice, Matt Forte, and Marshawn Lynch are all expected to remain with their current teams under a franchise tag or long-term deal. (We’d argue the Seahawks are likely to overpay for Lynch.)

Assuming Arian Foster — a restricted free agent — stays in Houston, that leaves Michael Bush as perhaps the most complete back likely to hit the open market. We’d rank Peyton Hillis, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Cedric Benson, and Mike Tolbert as the next guys in line.

Bush wore down late last year, failing to top 80 rushing yards in his last six starts. He’s better used as a complementary player. Tolbert may be the best value of the group because he has a versatile skill and won’t cost a lot. Benson no longer breaks tackles and can’t help on passing downs.

Hillis and BGE are examples why you shouldn’t overpay for backs.

Hillis would have cost a lot more money a year ago, but his limitations, attitude problems, and injury issues popped up in 2011. Green-Ellis entered the league as an undrafted free agent and wound up as the starting running back on the No. 1 AFC seed the last two years.

Instead of paying Green-Ellis in free agency, teams should look to find the next Law Firm late in the draft. Or after the draft is over.

Yeah, you say his full name and it sounds like a 4 lawyer firm . . . As to whether or not that's a real nickname or this guy at PFT thinks he's funny, remains to be seen . . .

well, if we want to take it even further, it's not even that you win today passing and stopping the pass.

some of the most successful teams won by passing and creating turnovers in the passing game and letting teams rack up the yards while doing so (GB, NE, NO - though NO had a strong run game too).

i just think there are still lots of ways to win though and don't care which we pick as long as we find one that works.

His nickname comes from Bellichick. When the kid first showed up to Patriots' camp as a rookie, Bellichick supposedly read off his name and then said "Benjarvis-Green-Ellis... that's not a last name, that's a law firm.".

Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis unlikely to be franchised, but team will try to re-sign him

Monday, February 27, 2012, 7:23 PM
By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns running back Peyton Hillis, who had a tumultuous 2011 season, is unlikely to be franchised by the Browns.

But they'll still try to re-sign him before he hits the open market March 13 at 4 p.m.

Now that the Browns have signed linebacker D'Qwell Jackson to a five-year, $42.5 million deal, they can use the franchise tag on someone else. It's doubtful the Browns will use it at all, but if they do, they'd be more likely to use it on kicker Phil Dawson than Hillis.

The franchise salary for Dawson in 2011 will be about $3.8 million, and for Hillis, it would be about $7.7 million to $8 million.

Teams must franchise players by March 5. If the Browns don't use their tag, they can continue to negotiate with all their free agents before they hit the market on March 13.

The Browns are interested in re-signing Hillis after he finished the 2011 strong. But the two sides were far apart when talks broke off midseason.

The Browns will also try to re-sign Dawson, as well as many of their other free agents, including Marcus Benard, Mike Adams and Dimitri Patterson.

Dawson said at the end of last season that he wasn't sure he'd be back in Cleveland for a 14th season, but that he intended to continue playing.

Mike Adams and Dimitri Patterson.

These two guys i'd like to re-sign before worrying about Hillis. Patterson is money and I'm really hoping we keep him on this team. For someone that people said was gonna be garbage from the Eagles, he's not that bad. A number 2 corner? Probably not. But he's good depth and can fill in when needed. Plus he's young enough that he can still improve.

And Mike Adams has gotten better every season. He can play both safety positions and provides Veteran Leadership. The guy's been on this team since.......2007. That's just as long as Joe Thomas/Eric Steinbach (not as long as Jackson though). He's a good guy to have around and definitely brings something to the table. We wouldn't have to worry about drafting a safety with him, Young, and Hagg. Plus, if we go through a corner crisis, Young/Adams both can play some corner. He was definitely better than the likes of Ralph Brown, Cousins, and Hank Poteat

The one thing that sounds good about franchising Hillis is that we get one more year to see if he's the real deal. Two years ago, he was awesome. Last year, terrible year. I'd like to see how things work out this year. I doubt we'll be able to do something like a four year 16 million dollar contract.

I guess it all comes down to his asking price and who's interested in us. I wish we could have those inside meetings at the combine to see if any of the top WR's or DE's are interested in us. If we're going to save our money, I'd like to franchise Hillis.

We are one of the few teams whose kicker scores 80% of their points.

But on a serious note, if you have a kicker that has proven he can kick in AFCN conditions in the winter time, can be reliable, and can kick fairly well from distance... that is a valuable guy. Most teams place very little value on the kicker until he costs you a couple games.

WHY is MKC saying we are trying to re-sign Benard? Did we establish that the Browns were doing no such thing or was that falsely reported?

I thought we WERE going to try and resign him ... just not tag him because it would cost more money and there isn't a strong likelihood that he would get interest (or at least not enough for a tag anyways)

I'm not going back to get the names of the reporters, but yeah, same day, conflicting reports.. One said they weren't going to pursue him, the other said the wanted to resign him..

so, as far as what to believe,, Got me...LOL

I believe the report was we weren't going to tender him because no one would want him, so rather than tender him and pay him that amount we'll try to resign him for less.

That's my take on it as well. The Browns probably feel that there won't be a ton of demand, given that he is coming off of a stupid type injury, and has never been a full time starter.

That said, watch the damned Steelers sign him and turn him into a 10 year force at OLB.

Peyton Hillis can’t stop changing agents

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 29, 2012, 3:11 PM EST

Last October, we noted that Browns running back Peyton Hillis used three different agents in 2011 alone. He’s celebrating the upcoming new league year by making another change.

Hillis is looking for his fourth agent since the start of 2011 after parting ways with agent Kennard McGuire, according to Josina Anderson of ESPN.com. There is a minimum five-day window before Hillis can hire a new agent.

It’s a bad look for Hillis. Again. The Madden cover subject consistently overvalued himself last year, which is why he felt the need to keep firing agents. His contract push became such a distraction that his teammates had to pull him aside intervention-style during the season and tell him to knock it off. There were accusations he didn’t play through injuries or give his best effort.

We hear a lot in the buildup to the draft about “off-field” red flags. It usually involves drugs or arrests, but Hillis’ behavior over the last year is a red flag. He struggled to work with teammates and put money concerns aside. He’s struggled to work with agents.

Hillis likely keeps changing agents because he wants more money than the agents think he’s worth. He doesn’t seem to realize that he hurts his value every time he creates another negative headline.

I guess if you wanted to be positive about it, maybe his agent was pushing him to "hold out" for more money, but he wants to sign quickly, so he's going to get someone who will be a more fair negotiator?

That doesn't fly for me, but I'm just trying to stay positive.

Well, the only team he can, and has been able to negotiate with right now is the Browns ..... so maybe he doesn't feel that his agent was doing enough in that regard?

So fire your agent and negotiate yourself, and pay an attorney to review the final documents.

I can't believe that after all the stuff he's caused that he's going down this road AGAIN.

Is the 4th agent in a two-year window a record?
