I agree with the love for Heck giving the media . . .well, Heck. Like we don't stink it up enough they are packing poison for our waterhole and giving away pretzels. We are better with him; his stats were limited as was this O-line. Repeated predictable calls up the middle certainly crippled many drives.

Throw out the stats. Find a reasonable price for a loved back who didn't produce at a premium. Though we do not know the price and dollars discussed, the refusal to franchise tag might be seen as above the ceiling the Browns are willing to go (possibly well above!). I hope he wants to stay and lead. But if it is an ego/headache thang, much as I pimp him, he is better gone. Maybe he can get a D'Qwell Transfusion . . .
He is a big boy; signs if he wants. Glad to hear there is public admittance of our interest in keeping him.

jc..

Saying we won't tag him is the FO's way of saying we aren't paying you 7.7million dollars, so negotiate or you will be a FA and lucky to get 3-4 million from anyone else.

Same here. I was 51% hoping that the Hillis era would end now but after reading that he was thinking about retiring, joining the CIA and getting a new agent.....please, 100% to moving on without him now. He could have had a VERY good extension during the season and balked. Too bad.

Oh well. I've wanted to see Obi+Jackson+rookie (NOT Richardson) in our backfield and I hope they can deliver.

These guys are trying to build a team here.
Giving 8mil to a guy that doesn't deserve it,will lead to some PO'd players when it's their turn for contract renewal.
No,the long term ramifications outweigh any short term gains Hillis would provide.
3-4mil a year is about right.Hillis don't like that,have a good career elsewhere.

The Browns have made the decision not to use their franchise tag on running back Peyton Hillis, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Throughout the past season, Hillis has wavered about whether he wants to continue playing football, and even considered joining the CIA, according to team sources.

Hillis told Browns coaches as recently as the end of the season that he was contemplating retirement, though it now looks as if he will continue playing, the sources said.

But Hillis has felt defeated throughout his time in football, whether it was being benched at Arkansas in favor of Felix Jones and Darren McFadden, being traded away from the Denver Broncos, or being unable to procure the long-term deal he desired in Cleveland. It led him to tell Cleveland's coaches that he didn't know whether he wanted to play football anymore.

Now Hillis is about to become a free agent and test his value on the open market.

AFC North blog
ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley writes about all things AFC North in his division blog.

Browns general manager Tom Heckert told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Wednesday that the team would like to keep Hillis if the contract is reasonable.

"If we can work something out with Peyton (Hillis) we will," Heckert told ESPN. "Did he have some rough patches during the season? Yes. Were there stretches where things were blown out of proportion? Yes. Honestly, I feel like a lot of that was blown up in the media. Now, of course things will still come down to the money, but we'll just have to wait and see."

Hillis and his agent Kennard McGuire have made the mutual decision to part ways. McGuire declined comment, and Hillis could not be reached for comment.

Well, if this is true, then it makes perfect sense for the team to only offer him an incentive based deal with very little in the way of guarantees.

I agree. I like Peyton too but I think it could be risky.

I think you look at the DQ signing as how it should be done. The guy still has many good years left, he shook off going 2 years while be plagued with an injury, and came back strong. I thought he played well last year, and earned what he was given this year.

Hey, if he wants to serve our country, I'm not going to bash the guy.

But, at the same time:

Now that we know he's interested in different career paths, I think he might go into acting.

CBS will be announcing CSI Little Rock soon.

y'all, git ur hands in the air.

Hillis in the CIA... hard to imagine. Actually hard to believe it's even remotely true making the whole article look like just another smear campaign on Hillis. I think I'll believe Heckert calling out the media and stick this in the trash bin.

Hillis is country dumb, but I don't think he's an idiot. At the end of the day the guy expected a nice contract. I'd bet that between the agents, the media and rumors he has watched that potential contract lose at least half it's value... That would leave me a little sour on the whole thing too.

Somebody will sign him to a 3 mil a year deal.

Oh, my Liberal Democratic Alter Ego was killed off decades ago.

The old saying: "If you're not a liberal at 18, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative at 30, you have no brain." really applies to me. I was a full go liberal at 18 ...... wanting to help everyone ...... thinking that people would just take what they need if we could only just help them get back on their feet.

Then I met the real world.

As for Joe, he is still on the user list, so I assume that he's not banned. Who knows? Maybe his head finally exploded.
