It seems like Jacobs has been washed up for a couple of years now. Upon further review in 2010 he averaged 5.6 yards per carry (he averaged 3.8 in 2011).

I still don't want him though. Like others have said, Hillis is the guy if we sign a running back.

I seem to recall reading something that he wants to be a wrestler or something.

Yeah, here it was:

Colts in Full Overhaul Mode

Quote:

The Indianapolis Colts will be a very different team in 2012.

In addition to Andrew Luck taking over at quarterback and Peyton Manning playing elsewhere, the Colts will have a whole lot of holes to fill with the news that they have released Dallas Clark, Joseph Addai and Melvin Bullitt.

That report came from Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, just moments after the report that longtime defensive captain Gary Brackett had been cut. Also coming out today was news that the Colts would like to trade Dwight Freeney.

Just as there’s been talk that Reggie Wayne and Manning could be a package deal, speculation can immediately commence that Clark or Addai could be targets of whatever team signs Manning.

UPDATE: Quarterback Curtis Painter was also released. “These players all made tremendous contributions to the organization and will forever be members of the Colts family,” owner Jim Irsay said in a team statement. “It’s always difficult to make these decisions which the nature of the salary cap requires. Their legacies with the Colts will be forever remembered by the organization, fans and Indianapolis community. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”

I wonder if Addai could be a target. He's always been a pretty decent receiver out of the backfield.

That's one thing that just drives me nuts about the whole Peyton Hillis thing though ...... he is a really great receiver out of the backfield. He would seem to be a great fit for a WCO team ....... give him 12-15 carries/game, maybe have another guy who could take some of the other carries and keep him healthy ..... but throw him 50 balls and let him do his thing.

I couldn't agree more, YTown. I wish he and the Browns could find some common ground to get a deal done. Maybe this week it will happen.

Shocked to see those names. I can't imagine too many Colts fans are happy about this. I've never seen this many core players from one team released in one off-season.

It could be that Indy might be looking to trade out of the #1 overall spot and acquire some additional high draft picks for it. They'll need as many picks as they can get to rebuild after jettisoning so many critical players.

What would those advocating for RG3 be willing to give up for Andrew Luck?

If the Colts traded out to the Browns spot, would Washington then move up to the #2 spot to get RG3 with Indy sitting at #4, possibly taking RG3 there or look to work a trade with Minny (as trading down and then up again that close to the top of the draft is ludicrous and I can't see Indy doing it).

What about this scenario?

1. Luck (Indy trades with Browns)
2. Kalil (St Louis)
3. RG3 (Minny trades with Redskins)
4. Claiborne (Indy trades again...with Dallas)

Or this scenario?

1. Luck (Browns)
2. Kalil (St. Louis)
3. Claiborne (Minny)
4. RG3 (Indy)

... with the amount of players being released by Indy, it looks like they're in tear-down and rebuild mode. Acquiring picks is going to be crucial in that effort and I can see a trade down (or even more than one trade down) in Indy's future.

There will be another crop of expected quality QBs coming out next year I can envision them building their trenches first and getting that QB next year or signing QB in free agency as a short-term fix and selecting a mid-round QB to develop over the next year or two.

An interesting thought, but I really don't see it happening. I think they're tearing down and going to build up with Luck as the face of the franchise (similar to what they did with Manning).

The only way any of that makes sense is if they still had Manning to bridge the gap...

Unless they plan on signing Flynn

Unless some offers them a Ditka, Luck is going to be a Colt.

I'd offer them Our two firsts this year and first next year, plus some later round picks, because I think Luck is going to be THAT good RIGHT AWAY. But I don't even know if they would take it...

You could be right. Indy might just go ahead and draft Luck, but without any good protection around him, few weapons and a defense that's less than stellar (Mathis is gone to FA and the Colts are looking to trade Freeney) and it's a complete rebuild. If they draft Luck with the intent to start him from Day 1, they're setting the man up to complete failure.

I really do see them fielding offers (even with Luck for the taking) and demanding a ransom for it. Luck is very well worthy of the demand of a ransom for and there will be a bidding war for him if he's available.

Now, it's quite possible that the Colts draft him while accepting calls by those interested to move up and get him and then work out a trade on draft day while they're off the clock. If they can't find a suitable trade, they simply keep him and continue from there.

The Colts really are in a no-lose situation.

Indy would have to be completely nuts, to trade the pick after letting Manning go.

It would not happen in a thousand tries.

They are rebuilding around Luck. End of story.

Yeah, it would take 6 or 7 1st round picks for them to consider it. That might not even be enough.

We are destined to remain in the unfathomable depths of the abysmal pit known as the factory of sadness. Yea us.

You don't trade the pick for the best quarterback to come out since Peyton Manning after releasing Peyton Manning.

It worked out pretty well for the Colts, it may have been a year or two, too soon, but you have to just smile, if you are a colts fan...

Oh I agree.

The Colts will rebuild around a great young QB. We'll ...... do whatever it is we do to churn out losing season after losing season.

If this is the case, if the losing continues and we can't solve the QB puzzle, the Browns fanbase as we know it will cease to exist ... or it will go away and only come back when they get good again. The diehards will get apathetic, the new generation won't tune in at all and will likely pick new teams. We are probably 3-4 years away (if the losing continues) before this happens.

And if RG3 turns into a super stud and we continue to flounder at QB, it may happen sooner.

You are 3-4 years behind the times, there is no new generation.
This is an unscientific study to be sure,but of 40 teenagers in a weightroom in the Youngstown area;
4 are Browns fans
13 are Steelers fans
2 are Packers fans
2 are Bengals fans
2 are Eagles fans (including my knucklehead kid)
The rest don't care.
This is from an area that was 90% diehard Browns fans just 25 years ago.
The Browns have lost the Youngstown area.If they don't improve they'll lose the Toledo area to the Lions. Then the C-bus area to the Bengals.
Then the next step would be to follow the original Rams and head west.

After seeing what the Redskins got for the 2nd pick? I don't know, I think that the Colts could demand five first round picks (one of them being a swap this year) and have two first round selections over each of the next 4 years. I think you could build a quality team with that many high draft picks over a number of years, including nabbing a premier QB along the way.

j/c this got me wondering do they have any rules in place on how far out you can trade picks like in the NBA? I dont know, I cant remember any trades involving more then 3 1st round picks.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I don't disagree. I think you have to take Luck with the first overall pick. And you let him take his lumps, but I also think you have to get him some protection and weapons (yeah, trying to unload Freeney is an attempt to do that).

I fully expect that the Colts to look at securing their OL (after taking Castonzo last year). They will probably move their second round pick from last year to the interior RG spot and look to draft the best C that they can and probably draft some more depth later. Their line is extremely young! Outside of Ryan Diem, their line has nobody with more than 2 years of experience.

With the mid-round picks, I think they'll try and get their offensive weapons, including some smart, quality receivers. They have Donald Brown who they'll be using at RB.

I expect that they'll draft some replacements or move 2nd string players into starting roles this year on defense, but their impetus will be entirely on offense.

They'll go heavy on defense next year and get some replacements on offense next year too. They'll make sure Luck has protection around him and weapons.

You have to start with a QB, and Luck is the best thing to come along since Manning.

My evil twin thinks they tossed in the towel to get to this position. But getting a QB is pretty important, just ask the Browns.

All this study show's is that bad Parenting is Rampant in the Youngstown area outside of those 4 smart ones and kids really are as dumb as they look these days.

It's the Now Generation, these kids will jump on the train of anything that is good now or in demand or what their buddies think. It started with the Barney and Tickle me Elmo Craze that ripped through the nation when they were youngsters..Now it's the latest Iphone or Pad or instant access to the internet. Can you imagine if these kids had to wait for a dial up..

In all seriousness, It is sad. I fully expect these bandwagoners(just in general) to jump on the Brown's bus once they start competing and challenging for Division titles and or Championships. If they are like my kids, they see the love I have for the Browns and are Growing up Brown's Fans totally different than when I did. I was hardened by The Drive and Rich Karliss' kick(wide right), the Byner fumble, and vaguely remember Sipe and The Kardiac Kids. We had to watch our team get torn away from us and the painful overly long process of Rebuilding and ineptitude which is all they Know. We carry a chip on our shoulder and yearn for that moment of Redemption where we can collectively give a big you know what to the rest of the sports world and everyone that has piled on over the Years and the list is long. Winning Cures all and Those that have gone into hibernation(The Weak ones) will all come out when we do.

Maybe your evil twin is right, but I don't think that's how NFL players look at the game. They want to win. There might have been some that 'gave up' on trying to work hard to win the games as the season went on.

As we know, the front office and coaching staffs were totally terminated. There was a complete and wholesale firing of both groups. I'm not certain that a single coach was retained and the entire front office is gone.

Do you think the coaches tanked the season to give their successors Andrew Luck? Do you think the front office wanted to be fired?

I think that the new front office and coaching staffs will be there for a while. I think 5 years minimum.

Man, your love for RGIII is pitiful. Reading post after post by you, you would think that if we drafted RGIII, every problem this team has will disappear. I thought your man love for Mangini was bad, but this thing is hilarious.

By your thinking, this team will never ever have a chance for a franchise QB, because Colt might actually win more games than you want and we won't be picking high enough. As if trading up is impossible

You also make it sound like H&H deliberately passed on RGII because they are cheap and stupid, and do not care if the team succeeds.

The things I state above are not my thinking, but what I get from reading your woe is me posts over and over in every thread. I can't see how you can be so sure RGIII will be such a stud. I call it 'Cam Newton" syndrome. It seems like years past when a guy like this came up people worried about him being able to play in a pro offense, but since Newton, guys like you think it is inevitable that Griffin will be just as good. Wishful thinking, and mostly all speculation.

I have to laugh at CleveSteve also, when he makes a comment like "since we lost out on RGII, we should leave the line alone to gel" . Not exactly his comment but the jist is the same. As if we did get Griffin it would be wise to sign better lineman, but since we didn't just stick with what we got since it is only Colt and Seneca at QB. Geesh.....what a stupid comment.

Anyway, IMO you should just stay in the QB threads and continue to whine about the position and cry because they didn't get the saviour...RGIII. Because all you do now is clutter up any post with the same regurgitated crap.

Now to return to the theme of the thread, sorry I wasted time commenting on this.

The point for me saying that was that I think only teams whose main problem is the O-Line should be looking at a 34 year old talented guard on the downside of his career.

I said that "talent and continuity" are the two most important things. I think the Hutchinson would upgrade the talent now, but shake up the long term continuity as he'll be out of here in two years if we sign him. If we had a strong QB it might make sense to go for an immediate significant talent upgrade on the O-Line, whereas with less talent at the QB position, I think we'll have to rely on continuity (at both QB and OL)... which is a long-term proposition.

I also advocated drafting a RT for the purposes I laid out, in that Pashos brings us neither talent nor continuity. Previously I was thinking we pick up either Datko or Adcock in the 4th or 5th after having the other skill positions settled. Since I don't think using a pick earlier than that on a QB makes sense now, I think we can bring up that pick to earlier in the draft... maybe even Glenn at 22 if he's there.

Why is that a stupid comment?

How many guys has Holmgren now tried to trade up for?

Well, there were statements from Holmgren himself that he tried like hell to trade up for Bradford.

There have been numerous reports that the Browns tried to trade up for RG3.

You make it sound like it's a piece of cake not only to find a franchise QB, but to trade for him as well. Well, so far H&H are 0-2 in 3 years. I don't think that they tried to trade up for Newton. I also don't think that anyone expected him to take off like he did.

As far as the OL, I have said that not only should we leave LT to RG alone, I fully expect that this is what will happen. I expected it no matter who the QB is. Hell, there's no guarantee who the QB is going to be yet. No one can say with 100% certainty. I think that the odds are that it will be McCoy, because I don't see us signing a free agent savior ...... but you never know if we draft a guy like Weeden, who Heckert seem really and truly impressed with. (and I think that it's more likely we draft him than Tannehill, just judging from how Heckert gushes about Weeden, and how he has a buddy on staff at OK State who has told him all kinds of good stuff about him ......

Anyway ..... until and unless we get the QB position repaired, we will stay in spinning wheels mode. I have outlined my reasons why I think that RG3 will be a star ,,,, and I don't believe that I mentioned Newton even once. They are 2 different guys.

As far as McCoy, the point is that there almost always is a team that wins 1 or 2 games ...... and I think that we are capable of winning 4-6 with McCoy. That takes us out of contention for that true franchise type QB. We saw 2 years ago and this year how hard it is to trade up for "the guy". Even if it turns out to be possible, it's expensive as hell. We were in our best position in a long time to actually make a trade. Hopefully the team will improve, and we'll not be back at #4, even if McCoy isn't the answer. However, that's a double edged sword as well. It's harder to move up from further down in the draft, and far more expensive the further down you go.

I knew that it wouldn't be cheap to get the #2. Hell, we got a pair of 1s, a 2, and a pair of 4ths last year to trade down in the draft. Now that wasn't trading down just a couple of spots, but regardless, there is a new paradigm in the NFL as far as trading high picks. It is far more expensive than it's ever been, and it's going to get even more expensive. The rookie salary cap eliminates the $60 million risk, so that risk is now transferred to the draft pick compensation side. It's not going to get cheaper. In fact, now that high draft picks are so inexpensive monetarily, I would expect the draft pick side of a trade to go much higher. Less risk on a salary standpoint means more cost to move up.

Now, I am sorry if you don't care for my opinion on things. I'll try really hard to care about that.

The bottom line is that we have the 4th best team, and the 4th best QB in a 4 team division. We scored a whopping 219 points last year. The other teams in our division scored 325, 344, and 378. Now you may think that drafting a WR is going to change that ..... but I don't. Right now the other teams all have far, far better QBs than we do. Until that changes, we're still a 4th place team, who might battle for 3rd in a good year.

Also, let me ask you one other question. If the QB position is so easy to fill, then why have Holmgren and Heckert tried so hard to trade up twice in 3 drafts, even, as Heckert said, being willing to give up "a lot" to try and trade up for Bradford?

Now, I guess I'll let you get back to your "Colt Love". I mean, that is how you're supposed to disparage someone with a different viewpoint, right?

How many guys has Holmgren now tried to trade up for?

YT...so you are saying Holmgren should have given up 4 first round picks for RGIII?

I don't know that anyone said he would cost 4 first round picks. Can you show me where it has been said that this is what it would have cost us?

Holmgren has been here for 3 (counting this year) drafts. In 2 of them, he has tried desperately to trade up for a QB. That should tell everyone paying attention how much he values the position.

I haven't heard anyone dispute that Holmgren places a high value on the QB position. (Perhaps I missed it somewhere, just don't remember that being said).

However the fact that he hasn't gone all snydery on us and traded draft picks like a crack-head trades his mommas jewelry, tells me he values having those draft picks a lot as well.

Really it's Heckert in charge of the draft so its him trying to trade up or not doing so, as the case may be. Holmy is of course involved, but Heck is the man with the title that is beholden to him to make, or not, these moves.

Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital.
Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).
