Patriots | Stallworth contract update
Sun, 11 Mar 2007 09:25:40 -0800

Updating a previous item, Michael Smith and Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, report the New England Patriots have agreed to terms with free agent WR Donte' Stallworth (Eagles) on a six-year, $33.1 million contract. The deal, however, can be as short as one year or as long as six seasons. Stallworth will receive an initial signing bonus of $1 million, a roster bonus of $1.6 million and a $300,000 workout bonus, to go along with his 2007 base salary of $700,000, totaling $3.6 million for the 2007 campaign. However, for the team to retain Stallworth for the 2008 season, they must pay him an option bonus of $6 million by Feb. 25. Also, a subsequent roster bonus of $2 million would be due March 1, as well as a second roster bonus of $1.6 million based on playing time, a base salary of $1 million and a $400,000 workout bonus. Stallworth would earn $11 million for 2008, or a two-year total of $14.6 million. If the Patriots were to keep Stallworth for 2009, they would have to pay a $2 million option bonus by Feb. 25 of that year. Including terms of bonuses and base salary, Stallworth would earn $5 million in 2009, for a three-year total of $19.6 million. The final three seasons of the contract include workout bonuses of $500,000 each and base salaries of $4 million each.

Texans | Team won't trade up for Quinn
Sun, 11 Mar 2007 06:52:26 -0800

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans will not trade up from the No. 8 spot to select Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn in the NFL Draft. If Quinn were still available when the team selects they likely would not pass Quinn up, however. Team officials insist they are trying to acquire draft picks and not surrender them.

well I doubt the pats would pay stallworth 6 million dollar bonus. he's decent, but not worthy for that kind of money.

I don't think the texans trade up to get quinn. peterson might be a different story.

If I'm reading the Stallworth deal right, they have no obligation to him past this year.. and the max value of the contract is $3.6 million for 2007.. But because it's a 6 year deal, if he works well and becomes a pretty darn consistent receiver for the Pats, he's locked up for 5 additional years,

I don't know about you guys, but this is the way to sign FA's,,, No commitment beyond that first year..

That's if I read it right... There is always questions about my ability in that area

If Stallworth has a great season they'll either pay the man or be forced to cut him, it'll be interesting to see what happens... The Pats are uncharacteristically making a statement this FA... Plus they have two first round picks... Looks like they're serious about getting back to form.

As much as I ripped on the Welker signing, it makes more sense with the signing of Stallworth. Although I do still think they overpaid for Welker, both these signings give Brady two good recievers to throw the rock too. As much as I dislike the Patriots, they definately know how to run an organization. They addressed their biggest problem spot at WR, signed Adalius Thomas, and still have two first round draft picks. Once again, New England will be a serious contender for the Super Bowl next year.

Stallworth would earn $11 million for 2008

Say what now? Anyone know how much Marvin Harrison or Andre Johnson are making in 2008, cause 11 mil is a lot of cabbage for any receiver, me thinks.

Yeah... a lot... I wrote above that if he has a great season they'd either have to pay him or cut him, but they could also restructure, so who knows... we'll just have to wait and see how he does, and how thay handle his contract next off season.

Stallworth.... who cares?

How does this part of the article affect the Browns? Is this a smokescreen (probably)?
I think the Texans would be wise to not trade up and give Carr another year.

This guy I know is known for his speed, but not his hands. Yes, he is a upgrade over Reche Caldwell.......but not that big of a signing to me.

I thought the Stallworth signing was interesting in the respect that signing him is a continuation of a very uncharacteristic Free Agency period for the Pats... It's just not their style to go for all these big signings.

As far as Houston goes... I don't know, it's possible Quinn could land to them anyway, but I doubt they're a potential trade partner for us and don't really see it as a smokescreen. Definitely could see Kubiak going for more picks. Thought is was relevant to the point of not letting Carr, as you said... But hey, who knows... that's what the offseason is all about... confusion, right?

Having Brady throwing to him could help his hands.

Nice addition to the sig, btw... glad to see Brownie catching on.

good signing. Him and Wes Walker should be a good combo of WR's with Brady as QB. He makes no names to good receivers (Jabbar Gaffney)

I always thought they would spend their money elsewhere. They don't seem to be the high dollar wide receiver type team.

Pats just signed Kelly Washington as well to a 5 year deal.

Stallworth, Washington, and Welker....to go with Chad Jackson, Jabbar Gaffny, Reche Caldwell....and possibly Troy Brown if he does not retire.

I think it's safe to say the Pats won't be looking at WR's in the draft

I doubt the Reche makes the team.
