Some say he's a ninja, rumor has it he's Superman Hes got the heart of a lion, still he's as gentle as old Peter Pan All you Hatfields better beware, I heard he's stronger than a Kodiak bear He's your real deal, he's no decoy, he's still his mama's little pride and joy
Chorus: Hey, when I grow up I wanna be just like Colt McCoy He's the true gun-slinging inspiration to every small town country boy Have cool friends like Jordan Shipley, have no-named singers singin' songs about me When I grow up I wanna be just like Colt McCoy
Now Everybody and their dog is doggin' on the little quarterback from Jim Ned Too short too slow and way too skinny is what the headlines read So he hit the weights, protein shakes and lord behold, he started to grow Now he's gettin' sick and tired of people getting fired up for rubbing elbows with Tim Tebow
Chorus
There's a new sheriff in town Shaking hands and kissing babies And throwing laser beam touchdowns
Like'em, Dam... but I gots to show you The Originals.
Dudes have been throwing down since the mid- 80's. Christian a capella, with soul and jazz influences. Some of the most harmonically sophisticated and finely-tuned singing you'll hear today. One listen, and you'll be able to see where Pentatonix got their inspiration from.
Here's Take 6, from their debut album Doo Be Doo Wop Bop!. Tune: "Spread Love."
(p.s. no looping, layering or auto-tune!)
...and here's an interesting large ensemble take on an old favorite Toto tune. You'll recognize it, for sure. What I love is the unique intro treatment, and the fact that someone actually thought this idea up in the first place.
A few interesting tidbits about A Capella music, then I'll post related youtube vids for each one at the bottom. Think it'll be easier to read that way. OU has, at any time, 5 to 6 A Capella groups on campus. I'm an alum of the original and oldest (Section 8).. but the other ones have some claims to fame as well!
1. My amazing fiance is a founding member of an all female a capella group called The Tempo Tantrums. They made it as far as you can get in the auditions for The Sing Off, without actually making it on the show. They were in the running right up until the end. I had to help her look over her contract where she basically signed her life over to NBC (I'll post a couple different vids of them) Doesn't hurt that they're pretty easy on the eyes too!
2. Ben Folds is a judge on The Sing Off due, in large part, to some very close friends of mine. He has said in interviews, he didn't even know the scope of a capella singing in America until he saw the OU Leading Tones covering his song "Brick." It was that video that gave him the idea to do his A Capella album, featuring the Leading Tones, and many other college groups around the country.. which then led to him being a judge on The Sing Off. I'll link the song, w/ a slide show of when Ben Folds came to OU to record them in the recital hall. It was arranged by one close friend, and the lead is another very close friend, who happens to be a Cleveland native!
3. My old A Capella group (Section 8) still whips out their version of Toto's Africa from time to time. Although they did the song after I left.. so when we have the alumni shows, as I'll show below, I just stand in the back and follow along haha!
The Tempo Tantrums. singing Jar of Hearts. (I got chills at the 4 min mark when I was in the audience.. the harmonies REALLY build and blend well)
Here is my fiance singing lead on the Dixie Chicks' Not Ready to Make Nice. (You're welcome to listen to the whole thing, but especially check out my girl at the 1:45 mark when she really starts to bring it home!
Here's a link of the Leading Tones WITH Ben Folds, recording their cover of Brick
Here's a shaky cam of our Section 8 Alumni throwing an impromptu version of Africa's Toto together after a concert.
Clemmy - I saw Acapella (the group you are referring to) in Indy in the early 90's. Loved them, have a couple of cd's, have some of the songs on my ipod, and still watch vid's of them on youtube.
