News that we already knew, but is now kind of official.

Quote:

Browns linebacker D’Qwell Jackson won’t be going anywhere.

The Browns have already decided that they’ll place the franchise tag on Jackson if they’re unable to sign him to a long-term contract, Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

That’s a sign of just how important Jackson was to the Browns’ defense last season, and that’s an extraordinary accomplishment: In 2009, Jackson suffered a torn left pectoral muscle, causing him to miss the final 10 games of the season, and in training camp in 2010, Jackson suffered a torn right pectoral muscle, causing him to miss the entire season. At that point, people didn’t know if Jackson would be able to make it back in 2012 at all, let alone make it back and be one of the best linebackers in the league.

Jackson came in second to Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in comeback player of the year voting.

So, that eliminates the possibility that they'd use the tag on Hillis. Not that I thought they would anyway..

When do teams have to use the tag? I know FA starts next month, just wondering if there was a certain date they had to use the tag. Also are we still able to re-sign our own guys before FA starts?

Too bad Mary Kay wont press for those stories, I suppose its easier to copy and paste articles about RG3 and the draft then get out there and actually get the inside scoop.

if we come to terms with DQ before the franchise tender has to be offered, then we could still use it on someone else.

If they get a deal done with Jackson they can still use the franchise tag on whoever they want.

LOL For those that answered,, I kiinda figured that if we reached an agreement with DQ, we'd still have it available for Hillis.. But I don't believe we'd do that..

Dawson. The RB franchise tag is huge now with Chris Johnson and Peterson's deals.

As far as when teams can place franchise tag...

Teams can apply the tag from Feb. 20 through Mar. 5 at 4 p.m. ET as a method of preventing a player from exploring the open market

Finally, yes, we can re-sign our FAs before free agency begins.

Personally, I like them both.. I don't know who I'd chose.. really,,

Dawson has been so good for so long.. Hillis is a needed component of the offense.

At this point, I'd have to believe it would be easier to find a kicker than it would be to find a RB..

But, the problem with that is, Hillis can't seem to stay healthy for a whole season. do you franchise a guy that you maybe get 13 games out of if you are lucky?

Man, I don't know. I just don't know.

the answer might just be,, neither.

Tolbert might be a nice add if we lose Hillis. Michael Bush is another one. There are RBs to be had out there.

what kicker do you trust kicking in our stadium more than Dawson? plus, the "been here since '99" angle works well with me. I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

I'm pretty conflicted about that question. As you can probably tell by my other response.. But they really don't get much better in this weather than Dawson.. I could live with your decision on this one.

If we don't use it on DQ, then Dawson gets tagged again or nobody I think.

That would be my choice. Kickers are relatively cheap to tag and if someone would tie Mack's feet together we'd have a can't hardly miss kicker again next season.

It's a shame she didn't account for a reader's laziness ...... I mean google is pretty damn hard to use .......

Before anyone whines about her not also reporting the dollar amount of the tag ..... it's $8.8 million, down from 10.1 million in 2011, and 9.7 million in 2010.

Also, just in case anyone wants to know how they figure out when you can place a tag on a player, it's in the CBA, which is in the Information forum.

Kind of interesting. I suppose in a broad brush, you can use the numbers to see how teams value the different positions.

$ millions Position(s)

14.4 QB
10.6 DE, CB
9.4 OL, WR
8.8 LB
7.9 DT
7.7 RB
6.2 S
5.4 TE

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

Yep .... although "OL" money is probably skewed somewhat by left tackle contracts.

I'm treally not that surprised that the bottom 3 spots are RB, S, and TE. Teams are going more to RB by committee, there are very few really outstanding Safeties in the NFL today ..... lost of starters, but few irreplaceable types ..... and every team seems to have 2 or 3 decent TEs. That seems like the easiest position overall to fill.

D'Qwell Jackson's agent had "very positive meeting'' with Cleveland Browns at Combine about multi-year deal | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/02/dqwell_jacksons_agent_had_very.html

INDIANAPOLIS -- The agent for Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson said today he had a "very positive meeting'' with the Browns here at the NFL Combine regarding a multi-year contract for Jackson.

"We're working really hard on this and hopefully we can get something done,'' said agent Brian Mackler. "We're working hard on it every day.''

Mackler, who met with Browns chief negotiator Matt Thomas here on Friday, has until Mar. 5 to hammer out a multi-year deal with the Browns. If nothing gets done by then, the Browns will franchise Jackson, a source has said.

"After the season was over, D'Qwell and I met and he instructed me to do everything in my power to get a long-term deal done with the Browns,'' said Mackler. "He wants to retire as a Cleveland Brown and likes the direction the team is going in. He thinks (coach) Pat Shurmur and (defensive coordinator) Dick Jauron are tremendous.

"The Browns have made it clear how much they'd like to have D'Qwell back. Now it's up to Matt and I to accomplish the goal for both parties.''

If the Browns can reach an agreement with Jackson, they might use the franchise tag on another player. Two possible candidates are kicker Phil Dawson and running back Peyton Hillis. Jackson is seeking a five-year deal, a source said.

I see no way that they franchise Hillis at $7.7 million.

I do think that Dawson could be in for a nice raise if we sign DQ before the deadline.

I could see it. How much would he get if we signed him to a three year deal? $5 million a year? With the franchise tag he gets $7.7 and a chance to prove he deserves a multi-year extension.

But like you said Dawson is more likely to get it, although I would not be shocked if we franchised neither and replaced both.

Why can't they just do a deal w/ Dawson? I mean he is a kicker for crying out loud!! lol. It can't be that hard. His leg is only getting stronger even with him being a very seasoned vet.

Phil is way to smart to say it out loud, But honestly, I think he wants out of here. I don't think he'll make it easy to resign him. JMO

There is a press conference with Jackson and Holmgren today at 3pm.

Jackson wanted five years. Let's see what he got.

Also, does this mean we franchise Dawson or Hillis?

Yeah, I'll be curious to see what it is. Needless to say, this helps because now the franchise tag is available for a guy like Hillis or Dawson (if we even want to use it on either of those guys). Just gives us options.

The FO are a bunch of idiots if they franchise Hillis.

Dawson would make more sense.
