just clicking, but I am sorta lost on this. if Tom Heckert is/has been sick and laid up after his surgery who did this deal? I am more than happy it got done, and look forward to watching DQ finish his career as a Brown. My only concern is who pulled the strings on this deal.

Holmgren mentioned some guys name in the presser and thanked him for getting the deal done on the Browns side...

Can't remember his name.. but listen to the beginning of the presser.. you'll hear it.

just watched it........I am so glad that DQ gets to finish his career here. You could tell and feel the love he has for this team, city, and fans! Its nice to see someone who actually wants to be here, and not just for a paycheck!

We got DQ down, now they need to put their sights on HIllis and get something done there! get him signed to a 3-4yr deal, and tag Dawson.

Heckert doesn't negotiate contracts. They have a cap expert who negotiates player deals.

Good call on that one, YTown.

Even if he did, as a previous poster pointed out, they've probably had the deal "done" for a little while now. I imagine finishing up all the finer points and editing all the legaleese takes time. Kinda' like agreeing to a price with a car salesman, and then spending another hour with the paperwork guy at a car dealership (except way worse, I imagine).

Regardless, congrats to D'Qwell. Build and improve on this previous season.

We have been trying to get a deal done for weeks. Heck is a big part of the decision but I doubt he gets all that involved with the negotiations. That would be more in the area Weidmeyer and Nance oversee.

As for Hillis, I tag him for many of the reasons Luke expressed. If we let Hillis work out a deal elsewhere, no doubt we might be able to live with the cap amount and make a better offer, but the terms might not be favorable.

I don't as of yet consider Hills a injury risk, but hamstrings are funny. Once some players start pulling them, they keep pulling them. Others, it's a one and done deal never to be a problem again. I like the idea of one year to see if it is a real problem or just a freak thing. Money isn't the issue here. We have the money so people need to quit worrying about the money and ROI like it is their cash being spent. I view it as a bit of an insurance policy. You pay a little more now but might save a bunch over time.

I also don't worry about his running style other than the jumping part. I'd make him quit doing that unless jumping over a guy is what it takes to win the conference crown. The league has plenty of backs who play the way he does...Steven Jackson is one who comes to mind...who play for many years. My attitude is 6 years is the most you can realistically expect out of any load carrying back. If you are worrying about a back getting injured other than the chronic stuff, like hammy pulls, you might as well not carry any backs because any of them can get hurt on any given play.

If you have a big horse like Hillis, I say ride it as long as you can.

Actually Matt Thomas is the Browns chief negotiator according to the Plain Dealer. (From an article prior to DQ's signing)

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss..._medium=twitter

"We're working really hard on this and hopefully we can get something done,'' said agent Brian Mackler. "We're working hard on it every day.''

Mackler, who met with Browns chief negotiator Matt Thomas here on Friday, has until March 5 to hammer out a deal with the Browns. If nothing gets done by then, the Browns will franchise Jackson, a source has said.

Any manager worth a plug nickle has back up plans in place... In this case, Tom had the guy in place to help make it happen. If you will note, Holmgren referred to that person (don't remember his name) during the presser.

Besides, if Tom was able to do skype interviews from his laptop computer during the Combine, I can't see why he didn't have at least a say in the DQ thing.

On top of which, they didn't just start talking about his a couple of days ago,, no doubt this was in discussion for weeks..

I don't see any need to question who did what. It got done and that's really all that matters.

Heckert doesn't negotiate contracts for the team, as noted above, Matt Thomas does.

If it's like most recent administrations, the GM may help handle a 1st round pick, (and with the rookie cap, probably not even those anymore) or a highly prized free agent, but for the most part, the team has a negotiator who also handles cap compliance. For the Browns, that's Matt Thomas as far as I can tell.

definitely. otherwise you have agents whose only real job it is to negotiate going against GMs who have a multitude of jobs. not a fair fight. GMs have to have cap specialists who figure out how much a position/player is worth and help prove/negotiate that with agents.

Cool....I didn't know who it was and just figured it came out of business operations/legal.

I was just pretty darn sure Heckert wasn't the guy sitting down or throwing contract proposals back and forth.

Yeah, that's the guy that Holmgren referred too.. Thanks

I didn't think that Heckert did the negotiations himself, I thought he made the decision as to who to go for.. But left the money/contract end to someone else.

I'm sure he was around to give the OK to whatever was decided..

We have a Head Negotiator (his name showed up on here somewhere, recently) who replaced Trip MacCracken when he left to go to the Chiefs.
There are also a number of other people in the front office that could probably have signed off on the deal once the negotiator guy got the numbers approved by the Cap and Finance folks.

Thanks guys, I guess in my ignorance of how a FO is ran I just assumed that was part of the GM's job. I know there are other people who crunch numbers but I thought it was the GM's job to get deals done. Thanks for clearing that up gang!

That's understandable, because, in general, it used to be that way. Once the salary cap hit, teams started going towards having a specialized person who had all of the team info available, who is responsible for handling the team's salary structure, and meeting the team goals as far as signing players to properly sized deals. (from a team perspective)

The GM may get involved in the case of a 1st round pick. although with the rookie cap, this is less likely that it used to be. He may also get involved in the case of a really prized free agent.

I guess I've always looked at the GM's role more as a player acquisition guy. He's the one responsible for getting the players. Then, it's handed off to a specialist to get the contracts together.

huh!
I think it was thought by many on this board myself included that DQ would excel in our 43.

I never doubted he wasn't our best LBer either.

The pec injuries where not as if he had an ACL's ... I wasn't too concerned about that .

Here’s a breakdown of the five-year extension LB D’Qwell Jackson signed with the Browns that includes roughly $19 million in guarantees.

The deal averages $7.7 million per season, with a $7 million signing bonus. Jackson will make a fully guaranteed base salary of $3.4 million in 2012 and can earn another $1.3 million in roster bonuses and a $100,000 workout bonus.

Jackson will make a $3.6 million base salary in 2013 that is guaranteed for injury, and becomes guaranteed for skill and capabilities if he’s on the roster the third day after the waiver period. He has the same roster and workout bonuses in 2013 as he did in 2012.

In 2014, he has a base of $2.6 million with $1 million of that guaranteed for injury if he plays in 95 percent of snaps in Weeks 12-13 (Jackson has been injured often). There is a $4 million roster bonus due on the fifth day of the league year as well as $100,000 roster bonus.

Jackson has a $6.4 million base salary in 2015 with a $500,000 roster bonus due the on the fifth day of the league year and a $300,000 workout bonus. In 2016, his base salary is $7 million with the same roster and workout bonuses. The back years of the contract include a $1.3 million escalator clause based on playing time and performance.

I translate: it's a 2year contract that becomes a year to year contract beginning 2014
