I liked him when he was here.. I sometimes think that there are those detractors that felt "this is what we passed on Ngata for" and that's a pretty unfair feeling.
Had a heck of a rookie season.. Fell off after that. I wonder, was it him, or the way we used him?
Good guy, kept his life clean,, no issues no problems.. Yeah, I'd have no problem with it at all.

I have said it in the past Kam would be great in this D, we shouldnt of got rid of him. I think the FO pretty much washed their hands of him because he was a Savage pick, and they wanted their own brand out there. That being said I doubt they would bring him back....but I would love to see Wimbley lined up on the other end, and watch him and Sheard cause havoc!

No, they got rid of him because we were playing a 3-4, and he was pretty much horrible at that. He's an edge rusher, not a LB. Let's not make him out to be some underappreciated defensive maestro.

Holmgren knew he was going to be changing to a 4-3.....IMO he should of just axed Mangini, and changed the D sooner. But that is a convo for another day.
Point is Wimbley as a DE would be a monster!

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I've thought about mentioning it to the board. He was always more successful here with his hand down (his rookie season)
It's definitely an option and won't break the bank ALA Mario Williams
My issue with Williams is, we get him, and we won't be able to afford Sheard or Taylor in a few years. I'd like both of those guys to be on the team for awhile, but both look like legit players. Therefore, planning long-term an 80 million dollar contract with Mario Williams might not be the best call.
Then again, I have no idea what Kam would be looking for

Wasn't he playing DE for Oakland? Because he wasn't a "monster" there...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

He did have 4 sacks against ... who .... the Bears backup, backup LT or something. I thought that he played mostly as a pass rush end on passing downs .... not really a DE, not really a LB ..... but kind of a cross. I could be wrong though. He had 3 tackles and no sacks in our game against the Raiders, by the way. *Edit* Sorry, it was against the Chargers that he had 4 sacks.

Some interesting theories, but my version of the truth is that Wimbley is just an older version of what he was here, which is a guy who has occasional rush ability and zero run-stopping ability, which equates to a below-average DE. He was a one-trick pony here which got him shipped to Oakland. He's been a one-trick pony in Oakland, which is why he's a candidate to be cut. Now, it appears that half of his contract is guaranteed no matter what they do with him, so he may survive the process. However, there isn't this magical upside with Wimbley. If we sign him, the overwhelming odds are that we're just going to get what we got, and that simply isn't good enough. We need a fix at DE, not a marginal upgrade over the backups sitting over there these last couple of years. I'd also ask what difference his clean character makes when the guy produces at an inferior level.
If we're going to go after a guy who only rushes the passer, might as well go after Robert Mathis. At least he's proven he can get to the QB on a regular basis, even if stopping the run no longer matters. Just in case anyone is wondering, I think that'd be an idiotic idea as well.
Wimbley isn't a fix. He's an expensive band-aid that doesn't make us markedly better.

But as was already alluded to by YTown. They used him at DE with hand on the ground in pass rushing situations.

I liked Wimbly ok when he was here, but we have already been down that road. I doubt revisiting that is going to be much help.

I keep getting this picture in my head of Sheard on one side, Wimbley on the other and Rubin and Taylor inside..
Honestly, I think that couild be a scary line to face.
But hey,, I know, we can probably get one in the draft.

Bringing guys back usually doesn't work.
It hasn't happened that many times here that I can recall, but here i am even trying to recall league wide.
He we brought Warfield back, but that was more ceremonial then anything else. We did bring Jack Gregory back and he had a farily productive 2nd stay.
I say go for Mario Williams. We have done something like that twice that seemed to boost our team when we picked up Alzado, then a little later brought in Harriston.

I'm not sure it happens much so there probably isn't much of a track record.. Either way, I'd love to see Williams here but wow, thats a boat load of cash he's gonna want. Still, it would probably be worth it.
I met Lyle Alzado once.. Dude was massive.. There was a donut shop on the west side of cleveland (near Brookpark) called Amy Joy Donuts.
I went in there with my dad once. We met him and I swear to you, he actually had to take up two of the counter stools because his arse was so big
He did bring a fire to the team back then.. That's for darn sure.

We can get whatever we want in the draft, we just can't get it all this year... We can get a QB, WR, RT, DE, CB, RB, OG, OLB.. all in the draft... but odds are that only 3, maybe 4, of them are going to be good enough to contribute this year depending on where we draft them.. So if we want to improve the other 4 or 5 areas, it's going to have to be in FA... And not all of them (probably none of them) are going to be superstars... so why not consider a guy like Wimbley?

Yup. As has probably already been noted, he's only 27, which probably equates to five prime years. Contracts that are unbelievable now have a nasty habit of being passe in five years. It's debatable, but Williams IMHO is the best DE in the league. I'd throw down the cash just so we could say we don't have to worry about the DE position for years to come. While he's unspectacular, Rubin is a good player, and while I feel Taylor underwhelmed his rookie season, he's there for at least another year or two.
It'd be nice knowing that for the first time in....sheesh...well, since the Michael Dean Perry days, we could say we don't even have to think about the defensive line. It's locked down and we can focus on other things.
If signing Williams meant not acquiring a high-dollar free agent receiver, I'd do it 100 times out of 100 times.
The old cliche that defense wins championships still rings true, even if offenses have closed the gap in recent years, and any good defense begins with a good defensive line. Ours has sucked for an entire generation. It'd be nice not to worry about it for once.

yeah, I wouldn't mind having quite possibly the best DL in the AFC.
and, if they clicked as well as they could, possibly right up there in the NFL (w/ Giants, 49ers, and possibly Lions if their youngsters continue to improve).

Ugh, don't remind me. I still remember him on the cover of SI wearing Browns' pants while he was a FA. I thought for sure we were going to get him.

I agree 100%. Think 5 years, $70 mil ($40 guaranteed) gets it done? 6 years, $80 mil? Charles Johnson got 6 years, $72 mil last year with $32 guaranteed.

In these desperate times, with this many desperate teams, and regarding a player who otherwise would NEVER be allowed to hit the open market except for a major screwup by the team rep who inked Williams' last deal...he could get max years. I'm too far out of date with any rules that may or may not limit the amount of years a player can sign for, but guys who are as gifted as Williams can still get it done at 34. If it's possible, it wouldn't surprise me to see him get a 7-year deal, just so a team can spread out the cap hit. It's probably more likely that it's a semantics thing, where the effective contract locks him in for 5 with some mechanism which allows him to leave or get cut early due to some ridiculous bonus or something. Is $50 million guaranteed for him impossible? Scarily, no it isn't.
I'm rather certain it was Haynesworth that inked a 7-year $100 million dollar deal. Truth was it wasn't close to that. We could see Williams do the same number with actual money being far more meaningful.

No doubt.
Time to grab a stalwart FA....and Williams is one of them....and as has been noted, barring injury, he should be pretty much prime for 5 years, if not more.

I wouldn't say there is no chance, but you are probably right. Our front office doesn't seem overly concerned with improving the product in FA, so if we go with a half ass offer, he won't play here.
My attitude is we need to go all in.

I don't even think if we offered a 7 year 100 mil offer he would come here to be honest. Especially if another team offers anything close to that.

As for guys not wanting to come here, I think that type of thinking could start to change. These players know each other. They also enjoy the opportunity to make big stats. Their is a nice base being built on the defensive side. I would think that Williams would love to play opposite Sheard. The two of them could turn this defense into a very good one. IMO the CBs and Safeties would look like beasts with the havoc these guys could cause. If Taylor blossoms, and Rubin continues to play at the same level he has, All you need would be that thumper at LB. These guys love the accolades. I would think that players look at it the same way we do. If they have a chance to contribute to building of a great defense, I don't think, it being in Cleveland, would matter. It is about winning, and if they see what we see, they would know that by them joining a talented young group, their careers could benefit.
They are not living the grief most of us fans feel about this team. Money and fame is what it is all about, no matter what city it is in.

True. But there would be a major difference between playing for the Browns (at least at this point) and maybe playing for the Patriots. Maybe he wants to head home to the Carolina area and play for them? Or maybe he can just step right back into the Houston lineup where he is comfortable?
I think we may be moving away from that "bottom of the barrel" team that appears hopeless ... but I don't think we have gotten to the point where we are 'attractive' yet. Maybe average but that won't bring in a top free agent unless we pay more than a team who can compete for the playoffs and superbowl now instead of in 2 to 3 years best case scenario.

This ship sailed. Weak run stopper (which we need), and only occasionally effective at sacks; I remember him having a good speed rush edge move his rookie year, but it is almost the only move he ever had and added little variety to it. Liked him, but not the full boat DE we need. I would pass unless he turned into something better.

I'm not so sure that he's an upgrade at all.
He never developed as a pass rusher and he was kinda terrible against the run.
