RG3 is highly coveted by the fans, sports radio guys, perhaps by the front office in Berea..but what if the Browns don't land RG3 in the draft?
What do you think their next plan of action will be?

if they go after Flynn in FA (or trade) then RGIII is technically their planB

other possible options:

keep McCoy starting another year (with or w/o a mid-round QB drafted)
draft Tannehill (though likely that will still have Colt starting)
sign a veteran retread (Campbell really only WCO guy out there besides Flynn)

I have to think Colt is the plan A and RGIII is the plan B. Only because right now Colt is on the roster and under team control. Hard to make RGIII plan A when you don't even know if you can get him.

I would think that plan A is to add to the offensive talent pool - because we're lacking talent across the offensive side of the ball.

So we will probably get a #1 receiver(or a receiver with #1 potential)
I think we will get a RT
I think we might get another starting guard
we will either resign hillis, or will bring in a starting RB.

Regardless of the QB - with new talent and a year to grow, our offensive should look much better next year (couldn't be much worse).

I believe this administration is the type that has multiple plans but we really won't know until free agency has hit.

As of right now, I see Flynn being targeted by 3 teams: Miami, Seattle, and Cleveland. I don't think Washington is that interested as they'll focus more on RG3 or Manning. For Flynns likely destination I put Miami at 60%, Seattle at 25%, and CLeveland 15%.

Im really hoping the Redskins get Manning and Miami signs Flynn. In that scenerio we would probably be able to stand pat at #4 and still grab RG3. St. Louis does not want to fall down to #12 where it can't grab Blackmon, Kalil, or Claiborne.

If for whatever reason we don't get RG3, Flynn, or Tannehill (he won't be there at #22, look at Ponder and Locker last year) then get a Vince Young, Jason Campbell, or someone to challenge McCoy. If they don't work out then chances are we'll have another high pick next year for Barkley, Jones, Wilson or Bray. Plus that incoming QB would have 2 more 1st round pieces on the team.

The only reason people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

I think it's more sports radio guys and "so-called" expertss more than fans and the front office. I know some fans want him, but I think it's the normal we want this guy mentality. The media is hyping it up more than anything. It's non-season so they need something to talk about.

That's funny, I feel the exact same way except about us drafting RG3. Needless to say I'm prepared for the worst.

If the Browns don't get Griffin, it is because they didn't want him. If we want him, he is ours. Other teams can't touch what we can offer.

No doubt about it...

I don't even care if I LIKE EM'...

If WE do???...Go get em'...

I don't care if it takes 4 and 22 and a 4th rounder...I don't even care if it takes 4 and 37 and our 2013 1st rounder...It is what it is...If we like this kid go get em' and ask questions later...

I can build one helluva football team with RGIII at #2...The 22 pick and 3 picks in 3 and 4...PLUS FA...

RGIII QB---2
Cordy Glenn RT---22

And if this front office doesn't get him ..... they had better be right. If we either pass on him, or go get someone else entirely, they had better make the right decision, because whoever they pick will always be linked to, and compared to, RG3.

I cannot imagine that there is anyone else available, other than Luck if you want to consider him available, who they could take a look at and say "We really like him better than RG3". (especially now that the height thing has been laid to rest)

I always laugh when guys say something like this. "They better be right"....or what?

Will there never be another good QB in the Draft? Doubt that.

Will all the fans stop coming to the games if RG3 goes to Washington or Miami or wherever? Nope, never happen.

Will YOU stop watching? You may say you will....but you won't. Face it, we're all hooked or we wouldn't be on here.

All anybody should want is for the Browns to start winning. And when they do, not one of us should care who is doing the winning for us.

I can't help but notice, an explosion of RGIII posts, with many declaring the Browns must draft him.

So what happened to warrant the sudden interest?

Did Griffin put up a killer 40 time?

Did Griffin throw the ball through a donut hole at 70 yds proving he has the most accurate arm?

Did Griffin ace the wonderlic?

No, none of the above...all Griffin did is speak to the media after weighing in.

Talk about buying in to the "hype".

Both the media and some Browns fans have fallen in love, with stars in their eyes...they must have Griffin.

All Griffin has to do is march up to a podium and speak...and some, go wild.

I think that RG3 will be one of those special QBs that comes along only so often.

Given that we will be relegated to 3rd-4th place in our division until we get the QB position right, and if we pass up a premium type QB, then we'll also most likely be relegated to another front office change, another change in direction, and another tear down/rebuild.

Yeah, I think it's that important.

Overall the talent on this team is good enough to be a 6-7 win team (with maybe 1 coming against our division) most years. That's usually not good enough to draft at the top of the draft, and it's not usually good enough to go get a QB from the top of a draft. We can't just say "Oh, there will be other QBs", because we probably won't, and shouldn't be back in this type of position anytime soon. That means that we will have to pay far more if another guy comes along later who we might like at the top of a draft ...... if we can even get him.

Not to mention that the only reason this particular front office is in place is because they can supposedly identify offensive talent ..... and if they get this one wrong, it would be a massive blow to their credibility.

JMHO ..... but I think that it's a sound one.

As far as not watching the Browns ..... nope ..... that's not an option for me. Unfortunately, I'm hooked for life. However, the worst thing I could imagine happening is us struggling along for the next 2 or 3 years with a different QB, while RG3 takes his new team to a Super Bowl ..... and knowing that it didn't have to be that way.

That would be damn near impossible to take ..... and would, literally, have me banging my head against the wall.

I'm going to add something here ...... just because:

I have made a lot of mistakes in my life .... and I have a lot of regrets ....... but very, very few of mt regrets are about things I have done, or mistakes I have made because I did something. Those are part of life, and part of learning. For me, my biggest regrets are when I didn't make the big move when I had a chance ..... when I played it safe rather than swinging for the fences ....... (and I rarely play it safe as it is)

It drives me crazy when my team(s) have a chance to make a bold, hugely impactful move and fail to do so. I don't hold Quinn against Savage ..... that was a bold move that, unfortunately, didn't work out. People thought that he would be a really good player, and he took a chance. Stuff happens, and he did wind up bringing us Hillis eventually. However, it drives me up the wall when we have a chance to make a big move, and we let it go by the wayside.

Imagine if we had said "Bernie Kosar is just too big a risk to take considering what the Bills want for the pick." After all, we gave up 1 first round picks, a 3rd, and a 6th for a guy without a great arm, and with funky mechanics. Imagine if we had gone through the ensuing years with a blah QB, and year after year of 2-14 to 6-10 records. We might not have a team today ..... because maybe the passion that overwhelmed the NFL wouldn't have been there without some recent history of success.

I would rather risk big, play to win, and wind up losing , than playing it safe and hoping I don't lose ......

He's ours if we want him because he'll be available at #4 if we sit pat.

The Browns aren't tipping their hand but they could give Washington a call on the day of the draft and if they want RG3, he's theirs at #4 for less than what the Rams are demanding and that the Browns would make it official if they want before the Rams are 'on the clock'.

If the Rams are demanding the #6, next years #1 and more this year, then the Browns would swap firsts this year with Washington giving up a fourth this year and that the Browns would get their first, second and fourth rounders next year. That would allow the Redskins to use this years draft to improve their team now.

While I still don't want to spend multiple picks for anyone, after watching RGIII's presser this morning its hard not to like the kid. He's intelligent, quick witted and over all pretty impressive.

Was Sam Bradford one of those special QBs? If so, then why are the Rams in the position to draft #2? If not, why are the media and lots of Browns fans, like yourself, talking about trading up to get him?

If the reason why the Rams won't take RG3 is because Sam Bradford was taken #1 and because of the contract size making it nearly impossible to move him, that's hardly the argument to not draft RG3 if he's that 'special QB that comes along only so often.' That statement would indicate that RG3 would be an improvement at the QB position for the Rams. If that's so, why wouldn't the Rams take him?

Let's get real about this. We need lots of quality players and giving up picks for one player that could be special or just another player (screw the measurables and 'meets the eye tests' comments) because we have a high percentage chance of getting a high quality player (or more of them) with the picks we have or trading back to acquire more picks to increase our odds.

Well, I think it's easy..... stay the course. Build up the other areas of the team.
Finish the defense and fix the right side of the OLine and add a WR.

Besides that, I don't think that this is Plan 'B', anyway.

Maybe so. Maybe he will stay at #4.

We'll know if not, and if we want him, we can get him. It's not like the Rams are going to field offers and not let us know.

All we have to do is ask the Rams to call us if they get offers....we might better it.

They will call

I was listening to WKNR's "Hooligans" driving home last night and Bruce Hooley made what I thought was an interesting comment. He said he was torn on taking Griffin because while he can see how Griffin might be the answer for the Browns at QB, he doesn't think he alone offsets the potential of getting Flynn as a FA, drafting Richardson at RB, and either Malcolm Floyd or Kendall Wright as your WR. Fill one hole or fill three?

To trade up to get Griffin, the Browns must be convinced that he is not only capable of playing QB well in the NFL - and there is always doubt with QB's in the first round - but that he will be a special QB, a true franchise QB.

You always say stuff like that, but i think you miss the point.

It's not so much a ultimatum as in "be right or I quit". It's he better be right because his ass and reputation are on the line and he pinned his hopes on the wrong guy. Face it, a wrong move here keeps us stuck in the mud. It could just as easily be said he better get it right if he does take Griffin and is wrong.

You do get that, don't you?

I wasn't a huge Sam Bradford guy ...... but I figured that if Holmgren wanted him then he must be OK.

Bradford has also gone into a train wreck his 1st 2 years. His receivers make ours look like All Pros. He has to be envious of the Steelers OL. He's been hurt .... and frankly I haven't watched him a whole lot. When I have seen him play I haven't been blown away.

As far as special players not being worth the price ... I say Bull. If you can get a special player, then you do it. You need competent players on a team, but if you don't have a couple of really special ones at impact positions, then you might as well give up.

Would the Browns have been better without Bernie Kosar? We have up 2 first round picks, a 3rd and a 6th to get him. Should we have stayed with Don Strock while we looked for an Eric Zeier?

Imagine going into 1986 with Don Strock and Paul McDonald as our QBs. We probably would have re-signed McDonald if we hadn't drafted Kosar in the supplemental draft. Ugh.

Kosar cost us picks ..... and even though he never took us to a Super Bowl, I don't think that anyone can say that he wasn't worth it. We were "rebuilding" then as well. IIRC, we gave up the 7th overall pick in that trade, along with a mid 1st round the next year. (although I could be wrong) Was that too much? Should we have drafted other guys? We needed help at several positions on that team. Boyce Green was our leading rusher the year before for goodness sake.

We did get help from the USFL supplemental draft as well.

As far as mac's question, I don't know how many games we'll win with Rg3 in the first year or 2. I will say that it would be more than we would win with Colt McCoy ..... even with RG3 coming in as a rookie.

dave...that is the basic dilema facing the Browns in this draft

...filling one "possible" position of need (qb) with someone who may not even start this season...

...OR, fill two positions of need with players who will very likely be starting in 2012.

We must not forget, the defense has needs too.

What if Flynn is as overrated as I think he is?

Then what do we do?

What if the team is just good enough to steal one win per year from our divisional opponents, and maybe wind 5-7 games per year for the next 3 years?

Start over?

Try to find a QB from lower in the draft, or maybe have to give up even more at that point ..... if we can find a trading partner?

Sometimes you have the right player, and the right opportunity, and everything aligns for you ... and the universe just waits to see what you'll do .....

I heard them say that and I also heard Rizzo say something similar earlier in the day. (Yeah, I listen online while at work.) I can't say that I'd be opposed to the Flynn, Richardson, Floyd/Wright route but it would depend upon what it took to get Flynn. I'd prefer an OL in the first round though. I'd really like to trade back and get DeCastro between 11 and 15 and get another 2nd this year and additional picks next year.

I hope you're wrong.

I could even see if the new coach in Miami said "I've seen him practice every day and I an convinced that he'll be the right QB for the Dolphins." .... but for the Browns to go on faith and guesses is absolutely ridiculous IMHO.

Bernie and the Browns manipulated the Supplemental Draft so that he could land in Cleveland and play here. He wanted to play for the Browns and made it happen. And are you comparing RG3 to Kosar? RG3 couldn't play in the game that Bernie did. He'd end up with a dislocated skull if he had.

I think you overstate that our receivers are better than bradfords.. both suck and you can see the results are not favorable for the QB.

I don't think the steelers OL has been all that and a bag of chips this last year. in the past,, yeah,, but nothing to be envious of.

And Colts been hurt also,,

But Bradford is a 1st pick in the draft.. so he gets more time I guess.

I make a list of the top 7 players in the draft and then ask myself if the rams who can have any player in the draft besides Luck would want to move below that.
Then I know the Browns hold all the Cards if they want RG3. We just stand pat at 4 if the Rams trade out of 2 fine they have to drop and miss out on some elite talent.
I agree with others its all media hype trying to say we have to move up. Alls the Browns have to do is say they dont want RG3 and all this trade up talk dies and everyone is talking to us about trading down.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Somewhat of a general reply here ........

The Rams OL, just for information here, allowed 55 sacks and 114 QB hits last year.

Our guys are all world from left to right by comparison. (with 39 sacks and 83 hits) The Packers, for comparison sake .... since we're supposedly getting McCoy killed, not like good teams ..... like say the Packers ...... well, the Packers allowed 41 sacks and 73 QB hits. So we allowed our QB to be hit/sacked 122 times total for the year, and the Packers allowed their QBs to be hit/sacked 114 times.

That's a difference of 1/2 hit/sack per game.

Maybe we can out the "Our OL is just terrible, they get our QBs killed, and no QB could ever win behind an OL that gives up hits like that." crap to rest now?

Bradford has a horrible OL .... worst in the NFL in getting their QBs hit and sacked. They also were down to their 4th string WR because 1-3 wound up on IR. I don't necessarily like him ..... but he definitely had major problems on his team .... that make ours pale by comparison.

And the Packers receivers vs. our receivers? Hell, our receivers wouldn't compare with the top college teams.

I'm not here promoting Flynn. I don't know how anyone can look at his limited body of work and say with assurance that he is the guy. Everywhere you look there are doubts ... stand pat with McCoy and build the team around him; draft Griffin, sign Flynn, sign Campbell, etc. And after all that, consider the Shurmur WCO, whatever that is, and how the individual will fit into it. Given that, and Holmgren's propensity for employing other teams' leftovers at QB, my guess is it will be Flynn they choose.

As much hype as the Browns get in regards to trading up for Griffin.. I could easily see Holmgren telling Heckert/Shurmur that he is sure that Colt McCoy is the guy.. "now go get him some talent to help him out"
