Green Bay not expected to tag Flynn Report: Packers won't use tag to set up trade of Flynn NFL.com Published: Feb. 25, 2012 at 07:16 p.m. Updated: Feb. 26, 2012 at 12:23 a.m. The Green Bay Packers are not likely to use the franchise tag on backup quarterback Matt Flynn in order to engineer a sign-and-trade scenario, according to a report by ESPN Milwaukee. The report did not cite any sources. Theoretically, Green Bay could apply the franchise tag to Flynn and then trade him rather than simply letting him become a free agent. That would be allowed by the league, though not encouraged. Teams have until March 5 to use the franchise tag. "(The Packers) don't do business that way," a league source told the website. It's prohibited for teams to agree to such a deal before the franchise tag deadline, and one unnamed NFL team executive told the website that would be farther than Thompson is willing to go. "(Thompson) doesn't bend the rules," the executive said. The franchise tag for quarterbacks is expected to be valued at $14.4 million for the 2012 season. The Packers would have to maneuver to fit that contract under the salary cap, according to the report, a number which would also be significantly more than the contract of starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers (whose base salary is $8 million). Speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, Packers coach Mike McCarthy talked up Flynn's prospects as a starter, saying that "it's his time to play." Flynn, a seventh-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, has started just two games in his career, but dazzled in his last significant action, throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a 45-41 victory over the Lions in the Packers' regular-season finale. It was thought to be more of a possibility to use the tag on Flynn after the Packers reached an agreement with tight end Jermichael Finley on a two-year deal. Finley was scheduled to become a free agent, and the Packers might have been forced to use the tag on him.

Personally a much better option than trading up in the draft for Griffin. We want wins, and between Flynn who has experience in the system and McCoy in year two of it, we will have a much better shot at putting together a solid season of improvement while still being able to "build through the draft" and keeping our draft picks. This is realistic in my opinion just for sake of growth. I don't believe at this point that Shurmer or Holmgren want to go back to holding a QB's hand and going through the process of coaching up a green QB. I think they would much rather sign a Young Vet such as a Flynn or Henne and draft one to groom or draft a guy like Tannenhill who will sit for a year and not be rushed into action but talented and familiar enough to Compete and step in if needed.

Not really a surprise,, I never thought they would tag him anyway.
I kinda wonder if there was a wink and a nod kinda deal between Philbin, Flynn and the Packers to allow Flynn to go to Miami as a FA.. not that we'll ever know that for sure..

Majorly disagree...
That's EXACTLY what they wanna do until they find that QB...
And it won't be Flynn...U wanna talk about a WASTE...Sign this chump for 5 and 50+M...And watch as he falls on his physically challenged ass as soon as NFL D's get to reviewing film on him...
U fail to realize this for some reason...This is Holcomb Part Duece...WATCH...

Why would that make sense at all?
He could go to Miami, or Cleveland, (ugh) or Washington, or Seattle ...... what does it benefit the Packers for him to go to Miami above all other teams?
Flynn will be a free agent. That means that he is free to select his next team. (as long as they want him, anyway) Why would the Packers have to give him any kind of deal at all about anything?

First it won't take 5 and 50. Rogers is slated to make 8 and you tell me he will demand more than Rogers. So you disagree with Holmgren saying it takes three years for a QB to get it? You think that when he says that, he subliminally means that we should take a QB every year and start the process over? So you disagree with Me when I agree with Holmgren? I think you fail to realize a lot more than I, just in the fact that you think Griffin is some sort of Savior or end all be all. He's not, and you can't say Colt or Flynn or Tannenhill will be a Chump or a waste with any more certainty than I can say Griffin will be a bust. You same people sat here and told me I had no idea what I was talking about when I said Quinn would suck and Jamarcus would bust. I called it the weakest QB class in history and people laughed at me. Some of you wanted to draft him at 3..LOL Can you imagine no Thomas and a busted Quinn. So when you tell me I don't get it or other's they are Nutz, I laugh. I do get it and if I'm right the Brown's get it too. I agree with bringing in Competition and hopefully they are able to beat McCoy out because that would mean that we have a potentially better QB and were still able to build through the draft. If not than that means that Colt improved and refined the things they wanted him to and we are a step further in the process.

I think it is a lock with Flynn reuniting with Philbin. Manning to Seattle and Flynn to Miami would make me a very happy camper.

I'd rather see Manning in DC. That would end the talk of trading up for RG3.

There really isn't any real value to it,, I just said I wondered.. Are you ok with me wondering if that happened? Or do you just prefer to argue with me because I think your anal about the RG3 lovefest you have going on

LMAO...Keep tryin'...It's hilarious...
It DOES take a good 3 years...Especially in this type of offense...Ask noone other than Young...He gets it...
Young also GETS the fact that u don't just grab any swingin' *ick off the streets and give em' 3 years...Which is exactly what the Browns did with McCoy...Holmgren shoulda shut his pie hole in that draft room and let Heckert do his job...
Give me someone with all the Intangibles...THEN give em' 3 years and a supporting cast...
We've got a phsically challenged QB runnin' this show right now...And NO supporting cast is gonna hide what he physically lacks...
U guys think some "Deep Threat" is gonna magically make McCoy a better QB...Newsflash...HE CAN'T THROW DEEP...Never has and never will...
Go get RGIII and END this damn merry go round at QB for once...

JC: I'm not really a fan of Flynn. If the FO is convinced he's the guy, then i'm sure i'll feel better about him. But I think that "Holcomb Part Deux" Comment makes a lot of sense. It's kind of like pitchers in baseball. Sometimes a guy looks very good but as batters get more looks at him throughout a season, they figure him out. This is even the case in a baseball game (at least with the Yankees), where I feel like the more pitches the batters get to see against a pitcher during a game, the better they do Personally, I always like Timmy C over Holcomb But yeah, that's a fear of mine with Flynn. There's just not enough on the guy. Even in college, you only had one season of film (from what I remember), although I did like him in college. I just never thought he was an NFL QB. Personally I either want to: Hold the course and stick with Colt or draft RG3 (unless we can possibly trade up for Andrew Luck). But most of all, I want to do whatever the FO wants to do. It's on them to get it right, and they're the ones most qualified to figure it out

And as much as you will Griff to be your Hero, he isn't going to magically come in and be the Savior/end all be all. Happens all the time, ala Quinn and the countless others before him. He can throw deep, and has. If he couldn't do the things you say he could he wouldn't be in the NFL, it's that simple. Holmgren has seen enough QB's to know what he is talking about, so for you to tell him to shut up in the draft room show's your anxiety and fixation on you thinking you are right and going out of your way to exagerate claims to fit your reality. Having Griff bouncing around the pocket and running after he can't go through progressions is not a long term fix.

Yeah, 11 starts in college, 2 starts in the NFL, less than 600 pass attempts over the past 8 years ........
Way, way too big a risk for me. He wasn't that highly thought of coming into the league from a talent standpoint ....... and I doubt that his talent has improved since then. He hasn't gained experience on the field. He is a guy who has started 13 games, and played in 14 or 15 in the 8 years since he graduated High School.
That's one helluva Hail Mary there.

I agree, Flynn is too big of a risk. The fact that he threw for 400 yards is a testament to how good the Packers team and coaches are. Matt Cassel was able to get the job done in NE when Brady was hurt. Now, KC is looking to replace him. Kolb was supposedly ready in Philly, and now Arizona might be in the market for a new QB.
To address the topic of the thread: I cannot believe for one second that GB would actually franchise Flynn.

Nice to hear someone following the spirit of the rules. Especially in the light of Jerry Jones just admitting tampering live on NFLN coverage of the combine.

Basically said "we like when the free agents come here because we talk to their agents in the meantime to plan for free agency..." basically saying that they're talking contracts with pending free agents at the combine. Mayock and Eisen kept looking at each other uncomfortably while he was talking. *edit* sorry, guess it was yesterday. http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/09000d5d82732094/Jerry-Jones-all-for-all-accessaround 7:05.

Packers won't use tag to set up trade of Flynn
jc..
IF, Green Bay does not tag Flynn, it is "great news" for the Browns.
This would give the Browns another QB option to consider if they are looking to add a QB this off season and it does not sacrifice their much needed first round picks.
Hypothetically, the Browns could add... ...a QB in FA ...draft a WR or RB with the #4 pick ...draft a DE, LB or CB at #22 ...draft a RT at #37.
Talk about maximizing your opportunities...the Browns would be addressing 4 positions with this scenario...and still have 6 more draft picks to address additional needs.

Ya know,, I once thought as you do on Flynn, But one thing that has come out of all the deadbates about RG3, is that Flynn hasn't shown anything other than he can win with an OUTSTANDING supporting cast.. that's something that he won't have here for a few years. and by that time, fans will be calling for his head..
No.., I just don't see him as a viable solution.
What he is however, is a FA that some team will take hoping as you do, that he's the fix.. I'd just rather it not be us at this point.

BUTTTT ... He is one more marble in the jar. Even if WE don't want him then if Miami takes him or Washington snags him up then it's one less team to bid against if we want Griffin ...

I don't know where the FA QB's this year will eventually land, but Philbin [Miami] would know from his experience in GB with Flynn, how to best use his talents and maximize his effectiveness. Flynn might not have a great body of work for the rest of the football world, but Philbin will know from having him in training camps and practices over the years, just how Flynn can be used effectively. Seattle will probably not go down without a fight. It's conceivable that Flynn could chose a lesser offer in exchange for what he might consider a better opportunity to excel and be successful going forward.
The Redskins I think are the key to whether or not a trade for Griffen will be made.
There could be a team not on the radar that could be a surprise player, but I think it could come down to how much they are willing to offer.
We don't need to act, but we can react if we so wish.

daman...is RGIII going to win anywhere WITHOUT an outstanding supporting cast?
Is Tom Brady going to win without an outstanding supporting cast?
Is Eli Manning going to win without an outstanding supporting cast?
Draft RGIII and I can assure you, the Browns will not have the needed supporting cast you speak of.
Matter of fact, the best way for the Browns to address their QBs supporting cast is NOT to draft RGIII !
The best option to insure that the Browns address as many of their needs as possible, is to sign a free agent QB and save their draft picks to address their supporting cast needs.
My second option for plan B...go with the QBs we have and improve the QBs supporting cast via free agency and the draft.

Is Tom Brady going to win without an outstanding supporting cast? same answer as above
Is Eli Manning going to win without an outstanding supporting cast? No,, same as above
Draft RGIII and I can assure you, the Browns will not have the needed supporting cast you speak of. Yes and no. If he falls to us at 4, we still have the picks to add and improve the team, if we have to use a bunch to get him, then no, we won't have anything to put around him
Matter of fact, the best way for the Browns to address their QBs supporting cast is NOT to draft RGIII ! I won't go that far. If he's there at 4 and we really like him, then ya gotta do it.
The best option to insure that the Browns address as many of their needs as possible, is to sign a free agent QB and save their draft picks to address their supporting cast needs. No, the best option to insure that the browns address as many needs as possible is to stay with McCoy which I see is your second choice
My second option for plan B...go with the QBs we have and improve the QBs supporting cast via free agency and the draft. Not sure McCoy is the right guy,, but I'm pretty sure they think he could be and they know way more than any of us.

Welker certainly wasn't, until he started catching passes from Brady. He was mainly a return man in the 4 years (and with 2 teams, on the practice squad) before he went to the Pats. He was a free agent, after being an UDFA. he's outstanding today, but is that because of Brady, or did he somehow "make" Brady?
Who are the weapons the Patriots have at RB?
They did draft Gronkowski in the 2nd round. (42nd overall) That's not a first rounder ....... but he is an outstanding player nonetheless.
What about their other WRs?
Are Edleman or Ochocinco of any consequence? How about Slater and UNderwood? (Who?)
What about Deion Branch? Surely he must have been a high draft pick for them, right? Well, he was a 2nd round pick ....... 10 or so years ago ..... signed elsewhere as a free agent, and then traded back to the Patriots.
Is he "outstanding?
Who are the outstanding players on the Patriots? Are they on defense?
The Patriots have an All Pro caliber QB, and he helps them develop weapons. Same thing with the Giants.
If you took Brady off the Patriots, what would you have?
If you took Manning off the Giants, what would you have?
Well, when you took the other Manning off the Colts, what kind of pile of crap did they have?
This is 2012, and in the NFL of 2012, you better have a QB if you want to win it all.

This may be in the wrong place,, But at what point does the price for RG3 go beyond what you'd pay.. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/02/post_122.htmlExcerpt from this article: Quote:
At least one NFL analyst heard rumblings at the NFL Combine that it might take as much as three No. 1s to trade up to No. 2 with the Rams to select Baylor's Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.

I might do that.
I don't think it will come to that though. I bet that our 2 firsts this year plus our 2nd next year could trump just about any other offer.

yt...yep..2012
Same as 1967...successful QBs are supported by... ...offensive lineman who provide a QB time to complete passes ...receivers and tight ends who can block and catch ...running backs who can run, catch and block.
QBs who do not have the necessary support, do not win Super Bowls.
There are 13 QBs who WERE NOT 1st round picks and 14 QBs who WERE 1st round picks who have lead their teams to victory in the Super Bowl...
...PROVING, it not necessary that a QB be a 1st round pick, to win it all.
But all of the QBs who lead their teams to victory in the Super Bowl had to have help from their supporting cast.
The Browns know they need to address their supporting cast if the offense is to improve. If the Browns feel it is necessary to add a QB, the best way to address the supporting cast and QB is to utilize free agency to find a QB and NOT waste two first round picks on a rookie QB.

No thanks. I don't want to give up three. Maybe #4 and next years. Maybe both of this years.....but not all three. The Redskins don't have two this year so they can't beat us (NO WAY they offer a 2014 first rounder).
I think Washington is worried we'll outbid them so I expect they'll push for Flynn, Manning or make a move for Tannehill.
I do expect us to push for a new QB this year. Shurmur and H/H don't have time to keep waiting. Holmgren is in his 3rd year here, I don't see him pinning his future on McCoy, again.

NY Giants.
Super Bowl Champions.
32nd in rushing. They averaged only 3.5 yards/rush last year.
#1 receiver was an UDFA last year.
The Giants were 27th in total defense. They were 25th in scoring defense.
They have their QB right though. Put a lesser QB on that team and they don't even make the playoffs. Put a lesser RB on that team ...... and they might be ...... 32nd (still?) in rushing ........

I don't think that would be enough but yeah, if your that willing to do that, might as well go to the top and give a little more right?
If the hype is true, maybe, just maybe RG3 is gonna be the first pick, not Luck.
