Will this thing ever get ran? Horrible for the fans that went there. looks like a 7 PM start....well at least now I get to see it live instead of DVR. web page DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. NASCAR officials have announced that they will attempt to run the Daytona 500 at 7 p.m. ET Monday. Originally, the planned restart of the rain-postponed race was at noon Monday. NASCAR president Mike Helton said that officials would be drying the track all day long and would be working on preparing it for the start "whenever feasible." Rain has continued to be an issue at Daytona International Speedway, where track and NASCAR officials have been working valiantly to run the Daytona 500 since Sunday afternoon. Rain caused the first postponement of the race in its 54-year history on Sunday. The weather forecast calls for rain throughout today. According to weather.com, there is an 80 percent chance of rain throughout the morning. That chance dips slightly to 55 percent at 1 p.m., then to 30 percent starting at 4 p.m. However, the forecast does call for some degree of rain until around 7 p.m. ET, the changed start time. Time to put a dome over the place.

That would REALLY stink for the fans. How many were planning on getting home today, and working tomorrow! Gonna be a lot of empty seats tonight. (track doesn't care really, since the tickets are already sold and I can almost guarantee they don't refund any money).

What are they supposed to do though? Can they run in the rain? (I don't follow racing, so I don't know)

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that those speeds with slick tires plus rain would be a recipe for absolute disaster.
If it is going to rain again all day, this may get pushed yet another day.

Just pretend it's the last lap, put everyone in a big old knot 4 wide and have a green/white flag race because thats how it'll end up anyway!

Oh, they HAVE to postpone it - no doubt. It just stinks for the fans.
No, the tires they use are 100% for ONLY a dry track. Shoot, even a "weeper" can cause accidents. (weeper is a crack in the pavement that water seeps out of).
Other series can and will run in the rain - formula 1 is one example. But, they have rain tires.
In nascar - the tire manufacturer basically builds specific tires for almost each track. Compounds are different, etc.
Running those cars on a damp track even would be like driving your remote control car on a smooth (think garage floor) surface after putting oil on the floor. Fun for doing donuts - and that's it.

Yep....even a drizzle is dangerous for racing. The tires are slicks, so there is nowhere to displace the water. Rain tires have grooves and also channels that take the water and "funnel" it out the sides. Racing tires need maximum grip so they need a to have the largest "footprint" on the pavement which means no grooves.
There was one time they tried to run in the rain about 12 years ago on a road course (Japan or in Canada?) for an exhibition race. I don't recall how it turned out, but it must not have been very good otherwise they would use rain tires and wipers for road course races.

They can't push it one more day....it won't leave the teams enough time to get to the next venue this weekend.
I think this is one of those "the last time two MLB teams play each other in the season and it's raining with no possible makeup dates available", they'll wait until midnight to start the race if they have to. It HAS to get done today.
If it's still raining too hard.......ditch the cars and let the drivers run around the track three times. GO!

OH! And DW talking about Danica taking her hands off the wheel like she's the first race car driver to ever do that and the NASCAR boys are learning it from her...  At least at the amateur racing level, drivers are trained from the start to take their hands off the wheel when spinning like that. That training has been going on for decades - my husband learned it as a rookie racer when he was 16 - and he's in his 40's now. I know a few of those boys raced at the club level (amateur, non-pro racing). I just want to reach through the tv and smack the crap out of DW he's been kissing Danica's butt so much for the past few weeks.
I don't blame Danica. In this biz, you take the publicity whenever, wherever you can. There's only a limited amount of time to get your name out there before your popularity, and dollars, fade away.

What a whacky weekend...now crashing into a jet dryer? Are you kidding me? My gut says the track is damaged from the jet fuel fire. Video

They actually are equipped to race in the rain on the road courses if need be. Basically rain tires and wipers.
For the person who said that F1 and others race in the rain, true they do, but not on a speedway.

I was the one that said that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, does F1 ever race on speedways? I'm not an F-1 fan, so maybe I just don't know.
Also - nascar - I know that the nationwide series ran a race in the rain - in Canada, if I"m not mistaken, with rain tires. But are you telling me the top series has? And with wipers - wipers and rain tires? I was not aware of that.

The biggest issue is speed/safety. Road courses, are naturally going to keep a driver from getting to speeds where they might lose control. They will brake sooner, accellerate slower, and rarely hit top speed, if at all. If they lose control, they will usually slide off into some sand or grass away from others.
On an oval, most tracks are made to run at all-out speeds. It's going to be difficult for drivers to reign themselves in if there isn't some sort of built-in breaking/cornering to deal with. They're going to spend then entire race at near top-speeds and pushing the envelope of traction. You also have to think the spray/mist of cars running like this would also be pretty bad to drive through. Plus if there's a crash ... they're going to hit a wall and slide back in front of other drivers who have little-to-no grip and can't see.

Dont think one ever has except for an exhibition race in Japan. NASCAR has told teams that there is a possibility to run a road race in light rain and they should be prepared in case they are called to do so.

I'm certainly no expert here but isn't the Indianapolis 500 a speedway? Those aren't stock cars out there.

Interesting. At about the half way mark - maybe just before - I wonder what kind of vehicle was in front of him filming. Because there was a vehicle, in front of him, filming.
Also, from the on car camera - did you see his hands sawing? How'd you like to run beside him - even if it was only 50 mph or so?
Looked more like dirt track racing to me. Although "racing" is kind of pushing it. He wasn't going very fast.

The indy 500 does not consist of stock cars. The brick yard race does though. (Indy Motor Speedway has more than just the Indy 500 is what I'm saying.)
