Joshua Gunter, The PDPhil Dawson will make an estimated $3.8 million in 2012.
CLEVELAND -- The Browns have franchised kicker Phil Dawson, an NFL source told the Plain Dealer today.
He'll make an estimated $3.8 million in 2012. It's the second straight year Dawson has been franchised. Last year, he made $3.25 million as the Browns franchise player.
The Browns can continue to negotiate a long-term deal with Dawson, who heads into his 14th season with the Browns.
Dawson played in all 16 games last year, converting 24 of 29 field goal attempts and all 20 PATs for a team-high 92 points. He also made seven field goals of 50 yards or more, which tied for most in the NFL.

Yep. Dawson deserves his "Thank you" contract where he gets a little overpaid.. I mean what is "overpaid" for a kicker? An extra $500K? Give the guy a sweet 4 year deal in the upper end of the range for kickers and be done with it.

He deserves every penny. Dude is clutch. I hope he gets a chance at the playoffs with us.

I like it...it's showing some respect to a long time performer and allowing him to bank some coin at the end of the career....just keep doing it until he can't kick anymore.
I don't know that Phil has ever been a party guy, but he is no doubt in my mind a guy who knows the value of the buck and is very heavily padding the retirement fund at this point.

This is/was my thoughts as well...I heard he sold his house up here and was looking forward to going back home. I hope his heart is still in it....glad to have "Phil-amatic" locked up for another year.

Phil and his family now live in Austin Texas, and he got his company Phil Dawson Edge up and running last off season (preparing for life after his NFL career is over) His company works with special teams coaches and high school and college kickers. I am thrilled that he will be back and would love to see us sign him to a three year deal, so he can finish out his career with the Browns

As I said last year, I don't think the selling of the house last year was a signal he didn't want to play for the Browns any longer. He and his family are simply preparing for the end of the career. I am not sure where his kids are in school, but you don't want to uproot them half way through high school and I don't think they ever planned on living happily ever after in Cleveland, so they made the move back to Texas at a time that worked for them.
He makes enough money that renting a apartment or condo doesn't break the budget. I am sure $1200 a month puts you in a nice apartment complex or condo unit. Toss in a few sticks of furniture and you're set. Mom and the kids can visit often enough, not to mention meet you out on the road several times during the season.
I look forward to attending his ring of honor induction 10 years from now.

Some people have read too much into the selling of his house. He's 36. He's at the very end of his career. For years people wrongly bagged on him with such things as his leg strength is poor, he isn't clutch, etc etc. When his numbers are compared to all of his piers, and when all the factors are taken into account, Dawson has been an above-average kicker. Others have had better seasons than he has had, and others have gone to pro-bowls while he hasn't. However, many of those guys have lost it and become journeymen kickers who can't stick with one team for very long. His consistency has revealed him to be an asset. A damned decade ago people said his leg wasn't strong enough. He actually gained distance as he hit his early 30's. That distance is now starting to fade, but his accuracy has not. So what if he can't hit a 58-yarder now? He's still good from 53 or 54. But as each year comes now, that leg is going to continue to lose it's snap, and there just aren't that many 40-year old kickers in the NFL. That's happened for a reason.
I think the Browns are just fine tagging him each year if it makes sense. The numbers are right in line with his production and value, and it keeps him from walking away in free agency. There's no real urgency to lock him up to a long-term deal when the tag makes sense. The landscape may change next year, but just like last year, tagging him was the smartest option.
Dawson's leg is fading. It was just a matter of time. When that happens, a kicker's usefulness can go at any second, so the smart money is to just keep using the tag as long as we don't need it for someone else. However, it's still good enough, so we're essentially taking him on a year-by-year basis. It's really the wisest thing to do.

Not only the finest PK in Browns' history; Dawson is also a threat to run the ball, with a 9.0 YPC avg and 1 rushing TD.   I'm glad he got paid.

Look at the form, GM ... eyes trained downfield, ball tucked in the outside arm, away from the pursuit (as if anyone could catch him!), while the right arm prepares a devastating stiff arm to the facemask of a foolish DB approaching from the side. The man clearly sacrificed a successful career as a RB to be our PK, is all I'm sayin'.

I'm willing to bet Groza never missed a FG over 50 yds. lol. And he also had more missed extra points because the Browns of the 60s actually scored TDs.

Kickers from Groza's era faced challenges that modern kickers don't. For one thing, almost all the kickers played another position. Imagine having to kick a 50 yard FG after playing all game long at LT. Fatigue and injury had to be factors. Then there were the field conditions; dual purpose stadiums with dirt infields for the baseball season, mud and frozen mud for late season football games. The kickers in that era had to deal with wider hash marks, which provided some difficult angles with smaller windows, especially on the shorter FGA's.
So by saying Dawson was our best PK, I sure don't mean to denigrate Groza, or Cockcroft. I just think that with the game on the line, the guy I want kicking is Dawson.

I don't think it's denigrating Groza to say that the man with the 12th highest FG percentage in NFL history is the best we've ever had.
Phil's finest moments as a Brown:
The 49 yard blizzard FG against Buffalo
Recovering his own onside kick against Baltimore
The fake FG run against the Raiders
The fake FG TD against Cincinnati
The 'Dawson Bar' FG against Baltimore
I feel there's a few I've missed, but he's been a bright spot and we're lucky to have him. I'm glad the calls to replace him have died down.

Glad to see Phil back another season. I really wish they would have locked this guy up a year or so ago and just got it over with, he is a fine man who is easily the best kicker in team history and still reliable.
He is one of the good guys.....
