Bears | Briggs says he's done in Chicago
Mon, 12 Mar 2007 15:12:20 -0800

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs, who is the team's franchise player, said he is prepared to sit out the 2007 season if the Bears do not trade or release him. He went on to say he's played his last down for the team and will never play in Chicago again.

Patriots | Samuel will not report to team's offseason program
Mon, 12 Mar 2007 06:02:56 -0800

Albert Breer, of the MetroWest Daily News, reports New England Patriots CB Asante Samuel will not report to the team's offseason program without a new deal in place, according to his agent, Alonzo Shavers. Although franchise-tagged free agents are allowed to participate, most players do not in order to protect their financial interests. Samuel is scheduled to earn $7.79 million in 2007 as the team's franchise player.

This is BS, the NFL better step in here. Teams build their teams around this tag. If players don't honor it something needs to be done.

Well you can't force someone to play for you. Eventually they'll both give in. It's just posturing for a better deal which they will eventually get. None are dumb enough to lose out on that much money.

I think it was around $7.5 million in base. While that's retirement money for most anyone on the planet, he wants a long term deal and out of Chicago. I don't blame Briggs, he has a right to want more for his family (as ridiculous as that sounds).

The franchise tag should be changed to some kind of "long term deal franchise tag". Like you can tag him for 5 years and have his yearly salary an average of the top 5 players of your position. The team keeps him and he still gets his long term type of deal (and somehow part is guaranteed).

As for Asante, he'll end up playing for NE this year. He's just going to skip training camp. The Briggs situation is the one to watch....

Let him sit at home and miss out on a big fat paycheck. I hope he takes a pay cut in 2008

If he sits, I don't think he should get paid, and I don't think it should go against their cap until he reports to practice or plays a down.

Let them sit.....but the NFL needs to step in and say if they voluntarily walk away...that the teams still own them if they come back for the year or years they sat out.

Nah, This is part of the collective bargaining agreement . If the players don't like it they should bring it up at the next contract bargaining sessions. IMO In fairness to these guys I'd like to see a team have the ability to match a salary for a tagged player. If I'm an owner no way I give up the agreement on my own.

I disagree - why not play it tough and potentially get 20 million or more (based on what is being thrown around out there) guaranteed instead of 7 or 8? He may be looking at it as he's giving up more if he gives in.

This is nothing new. Players say the same thing (at the urging of their agents no doubt) every year when they are tagged. In fact, I'm pretty sure that no tagged player has ever sat out. They have all at the least signed the one year tender and played for the average of the Top 5 salaries at their position (poor babies ).

Don't mistake it for anything other than what it is... a negotiating tactic.

samuel is doing what all of them do for good reason and you would do it too. that tag isn't guarenteed, so if samuel works out and blows out an ACL, he doesn't get that 8 million bucks/long term deal he wants. So instead he doesn't risk injury and for sure he gets the franchise tender. You would do the same thing, Samuel is a stand guy. As for Briggs, he is just mad at their front office, two diff situations.

If the NFL could do that, they would have.

And to answer a question.....No....if a player sits, teams don't have to pay.

How that reflects on a teams cap, I don't know, but I suspect it counts.

Didn't Branch sit out 3-5 games last year before being traded to Seattle?

The real catch here is that they can sit out 10-12 games but participate in just 4 and consider it a "fulfilled year" which I "think" means they get paid for the full year and definitely retires a year of their contract.

It used to be four games counted as a season but the revised agreement may have altered that to six games. Either way, the player has the power to screw over their team and still make their mortgage payment just fine.

Most of you must of missed this. Its a tag...they don't have a signed contract even for one year 2007 at 7.79 million - if he gets injured...they can pull the tag away and say...NEVER MIND

Once the contract is signed sealed and delivered then he is protected if he gets an IR injury and he gets the 7.79 in full.

Samuel is not being selfish nor does this action denotes Cancer activity or disdain in playing for the Pats in 07. Now Briggs thats another case all together.
