The NFL is taking away millions of dollars of salary-cap space belonging to the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins for front-loading contracts during the uncapped 2010 season, according to league sources. The salary cap is projected to be $120.6 million in 2012, but the Cowboys will lose $10 million, while the Redskins will be docked $36 million in cap space, sources said. Dallas and Washington can split the cap loss over the 2012 and '13 seasons in whatever form they prefer, with $1.6 million each going to 28 other NFL teams, the sources said. The New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders are the only two teams that will not receive a portion of the money. During the pre-lockout 2010 season, the collective bargaining agreement expired and the league operated without a salary cap. According to sources, the Cowboys and Redskins took immediate cap hits during the 2010 season that normally would have been spread out over the length of the contracts, giving them an advantage that other NFL owners found unfair. The league took an abnormally long time to release the 2012 cap number, due in part to the fact that the league was trying to decide how to handle the issues, the sources said. According to the sources, the deductions are not termed as violations, but are part of a recent agreement the NFL and the Players Association made to raise the salary cap number while preserving benefit increases and the performance pool. link

OK ..... why would a team be docked salary cap space for doing something that wasn't illegal to start with, in a year where there was no cap?
To me that would be smart cap management. (Not that I think that it will make much of a difference, given the huge cap space Washington already had anyway)

Because of this: Quote:
the NFL instructed teams not to use the uncapped years as a way to dump money in order to ensure that cap numbers in years with a salary cap would be lower.

The only thing I care about coming out of this is that we get an extra $1.6 million in cap space.

PFT:
Well, it wasn’t just a rumor.
We explained an hour ago that there has been talk of the NFL taking action against teams that deliberately dumped salaries into the uncapped year of 2010.
The two primary violators were the Cowboys and Redskins, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Per Schefter, the league will punish the teams by removing millions in cap dollars?
How many millions? Schefter reports that the Cowboys will lose more than $10 million — and that the Redskins will lose $36 million. (And now we know why the Redskins got the Griffin deal done last week; the Rams likely would have wanted even more for the second overall pick now.)
The teams can divide the cap losses between 2012 and 2013 in any portion they want. As of Sunday, the Redskins more than $30 million in cap space in 2012. The Cowboys had less than $5 million.
The money will be reallocated to the other teams, with every franchise except the Saints and Raiders picking up $1.6 million in extra cap space. (The Saints and Raiders presumably don’t get the extra money as their own punishment for engaging in similar tactics in 2010.)
So, for the second time in 10 days, the NFL has acknowledged cheating. Though this isn’t as serious as the Saints’ bounty system, it’s still cheating. And the consequence demonstrates what the league thinks of it.

So why don't NO and OAK lose money? That doesn't make sense...
And why would Washington losing cap money make the 2nd pick price go up?
Maybe it's because I've been up since 1pm Sunday... But those don't really make sense...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

I assume it would be because if Washington had no cap space then they wouldn't have had a backup plan at QB. Can't buy one in FA with no money. So StL could have demanded more (or more likely Washington would have been all in with NO backup plan...)

But the Rams would never do that because they're such nice guys and always play fair.

well, Vincent Jackson can now sign with the Redskins knowing he will be the #1 WR for the forseeable future because they have no $$$ to sign someone else and no draft picks to get one either

Dang,, That's a hit for sure... I'm guessing that Snyder won't be able to spend like crazy to add pieces around Griffin now....

Why?
Their draft will probably be around $6-7 million total, given that they have no 2nd wound pick.
Cam Newton got about $5.5 million per year on average last year, IIRC.
They can add a couple of WRs, and they really probably only need one real big impact guy, and get that done probably for $10-11 million.
I believe I heard that they have something like $40 million before this happened available in cap space. They take at least half this year, add a few pieces, look at their roster and decide what they have to chop next year. They can also go over next year by borrowing cap space if they have to.
It's not like they are going to be badly hurt by this, Instead of cap space that would have been used this year and next being used this year and next, it will be used this year and next. lol Nothing to see here.

they current have/had $30mil in cap space (PFT). so, take $7 mil out for draft picks they still own and it's $23mil. if they sign Vincent Jackson, then they'd be somewhere in the lower teens. that would leave a hefty bill to pay next offseason (and likely they would do more cutting now too)

According to this site (and I don't know if its accurate) They had 31 million prior to this hit. http://nfltraderumors.co/nfl-team-cap-space/They are losing 36 million over two years,, so they could shoehorn some guys in, but not the big guys like Jackson (if he's still available, I thought I read where he was close to signing) I don't know what thier projected space is for 2013. They are gonna have to get lucky with the dollars to land something of value. Maybe a hines ward would work out? lol MoMass may be available or how about Robiskie.. Just kidding. And given they don't have a first round pick for the next two seasons, they better get lucky with a 3rd rounder this year or a second rounder next if they are looking for help from the draft..

wow, losing 36 million in cap space is a huge hit. The skins were way under the cap, with an owner that really doesn't care about breaking the bank to get who he wants. Building a team around RGiii just became a bit tougher with this hit. Sure, they are still under the cap- but about half as much as they were prior depending how they plan to spread the 36 million over the two years.
Don't really by into this affecting the trade any though- i think that is reaching for a story that doesn't exist.

I think this may finally put the Browns into the Manning race. $20 Million available would allow them to sign Garcon Wayne and Manning and hopefully retain Hillis. Could be an interesting free agency boys.

You is crazy. Peyton Manning is more likely to sign as a backup to his brother in NY than sign in Cleveland. We'll have McCoy, Kolb, Flynn, Hasselbeck or someone via the draft under center this year. Heck, I'm more likely to be the QB of the Browns this upcoming season than Manning is (I have been playing in two rec soccer leagues recently....so my legs and lungs are in shape. I'd take the league minimum ).

Cheaters ... So let me get this correct the Redskins are being docked 36 million in cap space the next two seasons. And no 1st round picks. Ha! Maybe now Griffen will demand a trade, wouldn't that be befitting I'm loving this.

And why would Washington losing cap money make the 2nd pick price go up?
Maybe it's because I've been up since 1pm Sunday... But those don't really make sense...
It's due to the amount that these teams dumped into that year. Here's a Sept 2010 listing regarding team cap hits. The top 10 or so:
Redskins: $178.2 million.
Cowboys: $166.5 million.
Saints: $145.0 million.
Vikings: $143.4 million.
Seahawks: $138.8 million.
Jets: $135.7 million.
Packers: $135.3 million.
Raiders: $135.2 million.
Colts: $133.1 million.
Bears: $131.9 million.
Eagles: $131.0 million.
Patriots: $128.8 million.
Giants: $128.6 million.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...e-a-salary-cap/
I'm guessing 145 was the cutoff, but the Skins and Boys were the outliers here. Since there were all sorts of things going on in the "uncapped" year, who knows what the cap would have been. If you take out the player benefits allotment, then 145 sounds about right. This year the cap was right around 145, but benefits eat up about 20-25 million of that. I'm not sure what the Raiders did to add 10 million to their roster though.

Thanks for that information.
If I had to 'speculate' why Oakland will not receive any extra cap space, along with NO, it would perhaps be player benefits allotment with held payments. Al Davis though he was a maverick and was always going against the grain.
Just an educated guess on my behalf though.

Looks like all that anticipated FA help for RG3 just hit the crapper. I hope he can survive till he gets some help in his 3rd (if he's lucky) or 4th season or that winds up being a whole lotta nothing.
