Chiefs sign Brady Quinn Posted by Michael David Smith on March 17, 2012, 7:22 PM EDT AP
Brady Quinn is going to Kansas City.
The Chiefs announced the signing of Quinn, a free agent quarterback who spent the last two seasons with the Broncos. In Kansas City he’ll back up Matt Cassel.
Quinn entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick of the Browns in 2007, when Romeo Crennel was Cleveland’s head coach. This move reunites Quinn and Crennel, who’s now the head coach of the Chiefs.
Although some analysts thought Quinn was poised for NFL stardom when he was at Notre Dame, things have not panned out for him professionally. In three years in Cleveland he started just 12 games and never distinguished himself, and in two years in Denver he never even got on the field for a regular-season game.
The 27-year-old Quinn has a career stat line of 184-for-353 for 1,902 yards, with 10 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a passer rating of 66.8.

Quinn knows what he's doing, now he's only the flip of a coin away from being the starter again.

Manningham signed a two year deal with the 49ers.. LINK
He was never coming here anyway.
In his interview he made it seem like even asking if he was considering Cleveland was absolutely ridiculous.
The Niners still haven't signed Alex Smith. Maybe we can swoop in and grab him away from them? lol

Wow, that's stunning.
Who the hell would the 49'ers plug in at QB? They drafted a guy last year, but is he ready?
I don't know if I would throw big money at Smith, but he would be an upgrade at the position.

Smith is terrible. Harbaugh knows it. But not signing him at all is a terrible lack of a hedge.
Because Kapaernick is even worse than terrible...whatever the word for that is.

Smith can be effective if you limit what he has to do. Occasionally he can be a little bit better than he really is, like he was in the playoffs.
However, overall he's a very average QB.
I just looked, and Kapaernick went 24-50 for 257 yards, 0 TD and 5 INT in the pre-season last year. Not exactly awe inspiring, but then again we don;t get to see them practice every week either.

I watched every 9ers preseason game last year.
I thought Harbaugh was going to get fired before the season started for moving up and taking Kaepernick. It was painful to watch.
Mourg, Smith throws that TE seam pass really well, and him and Davis have some good chemistry. But I've watched a lot of Smith over his career. If you're looking at the totality of his work, you could argue he's the worst starter in the league. Last year certainly helps bump him up a couple of notches, however.

I hardly ever watched Smith, but the thing that stands out to me is the NFC Championship game last year. He did some good things, but it seemed like he simply disappeared for most of that game. Now, maybe the Giants D has something to do with that, but a good QB, a QB that's going to lead his team to the Super Bowl, has to beat that.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

How does a team so unsettled at QB nab two free agent WRs?
How can that be possible?
Colin Kaepernick? Throwing to Randy Moss and the Super Bowl hero?
How can that be?
(I refuse to use purple as it hurts my eyes.)

While I know what you are trying to do - and to an extent I agree with it - you are talking about a team that just went to the NFC championship, looks to have a solid D, and is located in one of the top 10 cities in the country. Settled or not at QB, I'm sure those factors helped as well.
So it's not just that Cleveland has a QB issue, no one really wants to live there, and they average 4-6 wins a year.
Changing gears, any insight on the board into why there were no reports of us going after Winston? Was it "fit" or is there a belief that Cleveland reached out to his agent and was told "don't bother"? I think just about everything that has happened with FA and Cleveland so far can be somewhat explained ... this one is a complete head scratcher to me.

Inquired and maybe told "don't bother" would be my guess.
It's like a catch-22. No one wants to come to Cleveland because they suck, and they can't stop sucking until they get people to come.
Welcome to Browns football!
Come on McCoy ......... pull a Brees!!!!!

Marcus McNeil is still out there. Man if he could check out physically, McNeil and Thomas with those big hosses in the middle, that would be a devastating offensive line.

And located in a city within a state with one of the highest - if not THE highest - state income tax rates in the country...AND Colin Kaepernick as their possible starter...that's a little more than un-settled. (Yet I agree with your comments.)

I think that living is Cleveland is a non-issue...not a benefit by any stretch...but not likely to keep a guy away on it's own.
I'm not losing sleep over any of the FA WRs we did not get...there are many I would have liked...but their asking price didn't make sense to OUR team at THIS time.
We will get one early and one late that will help.

If he could check out physically the Chargers would have kept him.
I'm just sayin'.
People knew he had "the stenosis" when he was drafted. i think he's played about as many years as people thought he would be able to.

Yes and no -- players with talent don't usually get 1yr deals from their own teams, usually too much for the player to accept.
Given that he has not retired, I assume there are doctors telling him he can keep playing. But I don't expect a team to take more than a 1yr flyer.
That means it should be a team trying to compete this year - that's not the Browns.

Maybe.
However, if they go all in on Manning and he goes elsewhere, they could find themselves starting their rook of a year ago.
That's the problem with playing musical QB chairs. Hell, we did it in a 2 team race for 1 guy, and found out really early that we lost. These teams locked in the manning sweeps could find themselves on the outside looking in.
I could see this .....
Manning to the Donks.
Seattle signs Flynn.
Smith signs with the Fins.
Who's the next best guy? Is there a next best guy?
I also don't know how Manning would see having Randy Moss as one of his top receivers. I doubt that Manning tolerates fools very long, and Moss has been a fool for much of his career.

I bet Smith is regretting not accepting the 49ers contract offer earlier in the off-season. Smith has waited this long, he might as well just wait and see if Manning goes to the 49ers. If he goes to the Titans or Broncos, Smith goes back to San Francisco. Maybe Harbaugh can go after Tebow.

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms on a contract with former Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, the team announced Sunday.
The contract is for three years and $26 million with $10 million guaranteed, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Flynn agreed to a deal with Seattle after visiting both the Seahawks and the Miami Dolphins over the past week.

Our best case scenario is now this:
Manning goes to Titans/Broncos.
Smith goes back to 49ers.
Dolphins trade up to three or four to get Tannehill.

I think they could very well sign smith and then look to trade up to get their shinny new toy a weapon since Marshall was traded. 2nd and 3rd sounds pretty damn good. Holmgren discouraging Heckert from trading down just means, It is really gonna cost if you want to come up.

I do, because Miami picks 8.
This is where I figured he would go, especially with Miami's supposed 'low-ball' offer.
Now if Manning goes Tenn or donks, and Smith back to SanFran, I think that sets up a 'best-case' for us.
With the top 2 QB's drafted already (for all intents and purposes) the media will focus on the 'next QB' and keep pushing Tannehill to go higher, especially if he shows up at his pro day healthy (foot) and throws well. Hopefully we don't buy into the 'hype-machine', but rather act like we do and sell it good so that the fins want our pick. I don't expect that, but can be ever hopeful they will overpay for our pick.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

Just as good as the Dolphins wanting our pick is the Dolphins wanting the Vikings pick. Maybe they give up a boatload to move up to pick three, allowing Kalil to drop to us and then we get a chance to move down.
