They're having their annual (?) conference call today with Holmgren & Heckert. I got notice of it as a season ticket holder. I'll try to post updates as I go, though I doubt it won't be much of consequence.

Heckert: Way to get good and stay good is through the draft, so not going to make big moves in FA.

Question: Why not get one of the WRs available in FA?

Heckert: Just because not going to get guys doesn't mean not attempt to. Knows we have needs. Hoping to add a few more guys in FA. Still looking more to draft.

Question: Still looking at FA QBs or just go through draft?

Holmgren: Just talking w/ Heckert about it today. Committed to who's playing at the particular time. Always look for young guy in draft. Will talk to "attractive" FAs. "Not bringing in Peyton Manning."

Question: OL?

Heckert: Feel good about Pinkston and Lauvao. Greco will compete. Do need to add to OL, though.

Question: Hillis. Why not "max offer"?

Holmgren: Happy for Peyton. Sometimes fresh start is best thing for both sides. Some economic considerations.

I called it..Greco will be a starting guard next year with Pinky moving to RT. We'll see but thinking that is what their thought process is at this time.

Question: Feelings on RB?

Heckert: Where we were last year b/c Hillis was out for so many games. RBs have to prove they can stay healthy. "Excited" about who we have. [What the hell else is he going to say?]

Question: Going to trade no. 4 to trade down?

Holmgren: Discourage trade down, but IF choose to use it, have confidence will get good player. But, have talked about a trade down [again, shouldn't surprise anyone].

Question: Childress

Heckert: "Excited" [seems to be the buzzword]. Shurmur and Childress worked together a long time.

Question: A lot of Steeler fans around. What is plan going forward? What gets us closer to "warm and fuzzy" feeling? Offense is "dismal".

Holmgren: Have to tip hat to what Steelers have been able to do. Hoping to keep "core" players here and then add to it w/ draft. "A lot of improvement needed on offense"

Question: Browns poor at "recruiting from own backyard"? [stupidest question ever, IMO, as it ignores the fact that there are other teams that could draft or sign these guys].

Heckert: Cover Ohio more than other places.

Question: Sorry what put up with from media. I believe in this FO.

Holmgren: Thank you. [answer should have been "That wasn't a question."] Hard part is fans have heard this all before. But, feels it's getting there now. Not going to blow things up every 2 years.

Question: Would have better offensive unit w/ offensive line depth. lol. "My question is, hopefully we can draft some good offensive linemen."

Bull.. Other teams have the same cap as us. How do they continue to do it while we shop at the dollar store? I'm not saying pull a Redskins shopping spree but we should be able to afford ONE stud FA once in awhile.

Question: Concerned with inactivity in FA. Specifically WR and RT. Need to see "sense of urgency".

Heckert: Not happy about record. Only so many guys available. Tried to upgrade positions. "Easier said than done."

Mike Snyder: sense of urgency?

Holmgren: Understand business side a little more. Can't plug all holes at the same time. Feel can make a big jump.

Question: "I don't think Hardesty or Brandon Jacobs [yes, that's what he said] are no. 1 RBs." Going to bring someone else in?

Heckert: Always looking.

how many teams signed a stud FA this offseason?

Bills - Mario Williams
TB - Vincent Jackson & Carl Nicks
NO - maybe w/ Grubbs
and whoever gets Peyton (obviously)

I don't think we should have spent that money on OGs, so take out those guys. Peyton doesn't fit our plans. I like Vincent Jackson, but wow did he take a big contract. Still, better to pay him than to pay Garcon what he got.

I would have gladly paid Mario Williams $15mil/season or so, but that's just me.

Question: Offensive needs and ability to get Richardson or Blackmon, willing to part w/ no. 22 to get franchise QB?

Holmgren: Not sure exactly what going to do right now [BS]. Have flexibility in this year's draft. Last year, running game was poor, OL was young, QBs got beat up. Unfair to write those guys off. If wheel and deal this year, no guarantees anyone available in 2013. If player we want there for us, we'll take him, but open to moving around.

Snyder: how find that QB?

Holmgren: Not easy, need continuity.

Question: How many wins we "need" this year?

Holmgren: "Should" win more games. Goofy things happened last year. Have made expectations very clear to coaches and players.

Question: Going from 4-12 to 6-10 isn't progress. Why should I get season tickets?

Holmgren: I agree. 4-12 to 6-10 isn't good enough. Believe we will be much better than that [what else is he going to say?].

Question: McCoy has limits. Attempted to get up to no. 2. What happened with trade?

Holmgren: Involved, yes. Most stories, actually, all stories, were incorrect as to what offer was, when entered in process, and what happened. We offered "every bit of the offer that was chosen." "Very close relationship" between parties. Not sure any offer we made was going to be accepted. Some teams are "kind of out there" in what they offer. Very aggressive in the deal, but didn't work.

So now what? "Take ball and go home?" Next step is to use draft picks to make team better immediately and to help QBs. Takes 3 or 4 years to see what kind of draft you had.

Aggressively pursued trade, didn't happen, so on to next thing.

Question: Heckert's drafts have gotten starters. 3 1st round picks was "too much" for RGIII. Blah blah blah I'm the greatest fan in the world and I'm not going to ask a question because I'm just going to use this opportunity to show everyone how much I know and how cool I am.

Answer: Ok.

I was on the call and that was the biggest bombshell to me.

He said that the offer was every bit the offer that was chosen. He said that he didn't want to get too far into it but there were reasons why they made the trade with Washington due to personal relationships.

You could tell that he was upset and shocked that they took Washington's offer. I truly believe that he believed the offer they made was superior but a buddy did another buddy a favor

The other big thing of note was that a caller asked about trading back this year to secure additional picks in 2013 to pick a QB then. And holmgren said that he wasnt sure that there was a good enough QB in that draft class.

My personal take from that is he's pulling the trigger on a QB this year and moving forward.

Yeah, but at the same time, I kind of took it as a "we can't be betting things will be available next year. Let's look at exactly what we know." But, your take is logical.

Yeah, unless you were on the call, you can't tell what his voice sounded like. He sounded like he was either really disappointed or still fuming over it. Or both.

If true...insane on Ram's part. That means: 1. They didn't take the best offer for their organization. 2.They kept Rg3 in their own conference.

If true...dereliction of duty by the Rams FO. Just my $0.02
