The police didn't conduct ANY investigation, that's the problem.

The guy said he felt like he was in danger so he shot the kid. Case closed to them. They didn't even question him beyond that. I'd say it was ridiculous except that it is really disgusting.

well, if that's the facts,,then that police department needs flushed.....

No way. There is an investigation if you shoot someone in your own house...

In any other situation this would be a local issue, but since it's becoming a "Stand Your Ground" case, it's getting national exposure as gun rights are increasing through many states.

Every news story I've watched has turned it into way more of a race issue then a gun issue.

It's being played up as a racial issue because that will get more people riled up than a gun rights issue, but it was the Stand Your Ground issue (gun or no gun involved) that first brought it beyond the local news outlets.

But when it hits the courts it will become more of a gun rights and defense rights case, that's when the anti-gun and the pro 2nd Amendment groups will go tow-to-toe.

I've never owned a gun and likely never will. I've had 2 cousins cut down by guns while still in their teens.

I see no reason why this should affect anyone's right to own a gun. Just because this guy has a gun and is a total idiot doesn't mean that other gun owners are.

To me, this is very much a racial issue more than a gun issue. Now, the media will love when the anti-gun and pro-gun people argue, but from someone who has had his life impacted greatly by guns, I don't see what the big deal is.

This guy was motivated by hatred (and possibly alcohol or other drugs, who knows). The fact that he had a gun is secondary to me. Yeah, if he'd just had a club or a knife, maybe this turns out differently. But the underlying problem I have is that this guy saw a black kid and immediately became suspicious to the point of, let's face it, murder.

I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

well yeah, that's the way it is supposed to work, but it appears that in this case, the investigation was quick and not complete.

I was going to comment in roughly the same way you did. I would have though that anytime there is a death, there is a complete investigation..Mandatory.

Since his tragic death on February 26, Trayvon Martin — an unarmed 17-year-old African-American shot by “neighborhood watch volunteer” George Zimmerman — has become national news. Martin, a good student with no criminal record, was killed by Zimmerman on his way home from the 7-11. Zimmerman was carrying a 9 millimeter handgun. Martin was carrying a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea. (If you are unfamilar with the story, check out our primer on what everyone should know about Trayvon Martin.)

Martin has merited coverage by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and USA Today. The story has been covered by all three broadcast networks and extensively on cable. But there is one outlet that has barely mentioned Trayvon Martin — Fox News.

Here’s a breakdown of the coverage of Trayvon Martin on the three major cable networks from the day of his death through today at noon: CHART IS IN LINK

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't understand why Fox is not reporting on this issue. It's not a Democrat vs Republican issue, it's a major news story that is worthy of reporting. Just found this odd....

OK, I just pulled up my handy dandy FoxNews app on my Roku, and there are no less than 4 in the "latest videos" section alone. (Something like the latest 25 videos)

Today at 9:56 am; Pressure to arrest shooter of unarmed teen
Mar 21 at 19:55; Million Hoody March in support of GTrayvon Martin
Mar 21 at 17:55; Florida teen shot by neighborhood watchperson
Mar 21 at 14:13; Rush to judgement in teen's shooting death? I just watched this one to see what the story was. The story wasa city commissioner saying that people should not "rush to judgement".
Supposedly the neighborhood watch guy said that he was walking back to his truck when Martin attacked him ...... However, evidently Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend at the same time, and she disputes it, and he (Martin) was taking to her and she said that his earpiece was knocked off when he was shoved from behind. By the middle of the story, they have concluded that the case not having been pursued is stupid and wrong. I didn't watch all of it though.

I don't have cable, but I have talked to friends of mine who do watch the various shows on Fox, and told me that there were segments on O'Reilly, Hannity, and Van Sustren (sp) as well.

When I had cable, I noticed that Fox News would also repeat the same stories in their news segments quite a bit.

Your right, it shouldn't this should affect anyone's right to own a gun. But for the anti-gun crowd it's great fodder because to them an innocent child is dead because this guy was allowed to carry a gun around in public.

I can only assume he had a Concealed Weapons License here in Florida, but have seen nothing of that. Because being on Neighborhood Watch does not give one the right to carry a gun.

I would like to see a further breakdown on that chart.

I'm just speculating, but I wonder if every time CNN or MSNBC mentions this case in any way, that counts, but they only counted one for Fox if it was mentioned during the dedicated news portion, and did NOT count if it was mentioned on O'Reilly or another such discussion show. It does specify "segments on cable News."

Reading the comments on the linked site is informational. These folks are saying all the wingnuts are on the Conservative side? One of them saying this is apparently wearing a bunny suit?

Also, I just heard Zimmerman referred to on radio as a "white hispanic". I've never heard this term before. I figure pretty soon he'll be just a "white guy".

It's going to be a racial case, and it shouldn't be. Some fanatic killed an innocent kid, most likely, we do not yet have all the facts, but he looks guilty. Race should not be the major story here. It does look like the cops screwed up, but even that may not be racially motivated. They could just be stupid. Since I have not heard the race of the investigating officers stated, wonder what the odds are that one, some, or all were black or hispanic? Betcha y'all are thinking they were all white boys, ain't ya?

If the cops WERE all white, does that automatically make them racists? Remember, they could just be stupid. Is that worse? At least racist cops would be right some of the time.

Actually, I never knew he was Hispanic until I saw a photo. News outlets were just saying White male. First thought was they were stirring that racial pot. I sure hope not but...

Now I hear he was bleeding from the face and head and that Martin didnt live in the gated community. Sad when the facts are withheld, skewed and or manipulated. We're talking peoples lives!

Like I said, I don;t have cable, so I can't say 100% for sure what Fox airs, but I do have a Fox Business News App on my Roku that also has Fox News latest videos in it, and that's where I got those timestamps from. That would seem to put lie to the contetion that they didn't cover the story, unless they are talking about a different time frame.

Interesting in that I heard "hispanic" originally on the news and then saw the photo and thought it was a white guy?

Any Hispanics on here? Ever heard of a "white hispanic"? I know black people have various terms that relate to skin tone amongst themselves, SFAIK most if not all of these relate to a degree of "whiteness". The only similar terms I have heard from or about hispanics related to their degree of "spanishness", again SFAIK.

I've just never heard "white hispanic", or "black hispanic", for that matter.

Why isn't this just a case of some security fanatic killed an innocent kid? Why does race have to be trumpeted from the hilltops? I know the answer, I just wish it weren't so.

This Zimmerman was also out of his truck, following the kid on foot, and when told to stop following him took "the long way" back to his truck according to reports.

When you add up the kid talking to his girlfriend, and then having his "headset" knocked off his head, and it seems like someone jumped him. It seems from this Zimmerman being heard crying for help right before he shot an unarmed kid who he almost certainly jumped, that he was losing this fight to the skinny kid he outweighed by 100 or more pounds. Then, of course, he did the only thing he could do at that point, after creating the entire situation, he shot him.

Perfectly reasonable for police to just let him go.

I wanted to thank you for posting the entire law.

Some time back I referred to this, and virtually everyone insisted I was wrong. They have changed the wording since I first researched it, but the key phrase "forcible and illegal entry" is still there. Use of lethal force is authorized, no direct physical threat required, the threat is presumed by the nature of the entry.

It says exactly what I said it did.

As has been said before in the thread, it sounds a lot like the guy says 'f------ coons' shortly before killing the kid.

As has been said before on this thread, that's not confirmed, maybe he said it, maybe he didn't, but listen to the tape and tell me what you hear.

Anytime something is perceived as racial, you will always have two immediate groups - those who are convinced that it's race-driven, and those who will argue that race is irrelevant in the situation.

Based on the evidence presented thus far in this case, I do think race is certainly a motivating factor in what happened. Would Zimmerman have done this if it were a white person? Sure, It's entirely possible that he was just a ticking time bomb cowboy and this was inevitable. But the possible racial slur coupled with the belief of 'suspicious behavior' when, to date, it seems like there was none, leads me to believe that race was certainly a factor in the incident.

Racially motivated or not, I can't wait for the grand jury to tack this loser's pelt on the wall.

So, even though you don't know if he said it or not - you're still saying he might have said it. Got it.

Well, you also have those that want to call a hispanic person a "white hispanic"..........and of course if something happens to a black person and it isn't done by a black person - then it's racist.

I suppose I fit into your neat little compartmentalized definition when I say color doesn't matter. But, to me, color doesn't matter. I guess to the law it does - as a white person killing a black person is apparently worse than a white killing a white, or a black killing a black.

Murder is murder - is it not? Somehow we have these "hate crime" laws that make it "worse"???

Re read this.

You say "based on the evidence we have so far, race is certainly a motivating factor." (the evidence so far). You also ask if Zimmerman would have done this if it were a white person. Who the HELL knows?

" The POSSIBLE racial slur", coupled with the suspicious behavior claim............and you have him hung?

At least you're back to having some sense. Racially motivated or not - Zimmerman killed someone. His color does not matter. His age does not matter (aside from the sentimental "he was too young...." feeling)

He killed someone that was not armed.

He admitted to following this "suspicious" person.

Stand your ground does not allow "following" someone.

Stand your ground means just that: You are allowed to stand your ground if threatened. You do not have to retreat.

Zimmerman screwed up.

I've also heard Zimmerman claims he was checking a street sign when this happened. Last I knew - street signs were near streets, not in someones back yard. Kid was killed in a back yard, wasn't he?

There's plenty to send Zimmerman to prison - race shouldn't matter.

He did not follow the s.y.g. law. He killed someone. He did not kill a black person, or white person, or whatever race person - he killed a person.

I have him hung in terms of what happened. He followed the kid when he was told not to by law enforcement, and then killed him.

As far as racial motivation go, it certainly appears to me that it was a factor, yes.

Couple things here that need clarification.

Zimmerman was NOT, repeat NOT, told by law enforcement not to follow the kid.

First, not everything that comes out of a cop's mouth is a lawful order. In fact, if you listen carefully and know what to listen for, they rarely do that, they make polite requests. "Do you want to open the glovebox for me?" is not a lawful order, it is, in fact, a polite request which may very well have no basis in law. I can personally attest to this and have given examples in the past of exactly this behavior.

Second, he was not talking to a cop, or law enforcement, he was talking to a 911 dispatcher; people who usually have minimal training.

Third, he was not told "not to follow the kid". He was told "we don't need you to do that". In short, someone with no legal authority, minimal training, and no knowledge of the situation.

If you were swimming in the deep ocean, and called 911 to ask if you can untie the anchor from your foot, and they say "we don't need you to do that", are you going to drown in order to comply with that opinion? "There's an intruder in my home, should I run out the front door? No, stay right where you are. Was that a gunshot? Hello? Hello?"

This concept that someone else should dictate to you actions on which your safety depends is just completely insane.

Finally, he could very well have referred to "loons" or "goons", still derogatory terms but not racially offensive.

The man is no more guilty if he is a white hispanic as compared to a hispanic, and the kid is no more dead because he is black.

And if you are on the jury - IF the guy goes to trial - that will matter. Until then?

And how will we ever find that out? Here's the short answer: We won't.

Here's the long answer: From what we know - Zimmerman followed this person. He then killed him. Everything in between is inconsequential. HE followed someone - HE put himself in danger. Stand your ground does not apply. Race - in fear for his life, even if the kid DID assault him - Zimmerman put himself in that position when he did not have to. (I should add, "from what we know")

As another poster pointed out - law "enforcement" did not tell Zimmerman to not follow the guy. A 911 dispatcher said "we don't need you to do that".

Regardless - Zimmerman, by following the kid - has no law backing him. Not castle doctrine, not "stand your ground"....nothing. Even IF the kid was up to no good - Zimmerman forfeited his legal rights by following the kid. Period.

I'm glad it appears to you to be that way.

My question would be: "Why does it matter?" Murder is murder. Is it MORE of a murder if race was involved? (something that cannot be proven). Isn't dead...just that? Dead?

the cops are in no fault in my eyes.. this guy was gonna do what he wanted to do regardless..

but please.. if Trayvon was white.. he'd still be alive. Let's just be honest here. That's why its seen as a racial story.

The fault on the part of the cops, if there was one, happened AFTER the incident. They in no way were responsible for preventing this action, but they probably should have investigated a bit better.

As for the boy being white, you are making a HUGE assumption. OR, are you one of those that believes hating white people is not a "hate crime", or that it is justified? I know there are many such, "black rage", or hatred of white people, has been tried as a defense for mass murder.

I don't think I'm making a huge assumption at all.. I've dealt with this kind of stuff personally,so maybe I see it differently than you.

and no.. I'm not one of those people.

Nelson,
First, the cops more than a "bit" messed up the investigation. The Sanford cops in no shape, form or fashion made a proper investigation of this murder. As a matter of fact, the detective on this case was not a homicide detective AND was previously in trouble for not arresting a cop who beat a homeless man. SO the fix was in from the time the police came onto the scene.

As far as if the boy was white, he would have been alive is a pretty good assumption since listening to the 911 tape, Zimmerman says" these assholes always get away" -- who is the "they" Zimmerman is referring too?? Also, Zimmerman would have thought the white kids were not suspicious, hoodie or not!

The only rage is that the police allowed a murderer to come up with a flimsy reason for shooting a 17 year old kid, when Zimmerman was the one who initiated the contact.

WOW! I just read that law (the section highlighted) and I can't believe how open it is.

Basically, if you are anywhere public or private (and you have a right to be there) you can use any amount of force you deem necessary to protect yourself, others or prevent the commission of a felony.

You would be within the law if you said you thought the person you just gunned down intended to commit a felony... THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY TO PROVE YOU WRONG.

"They" would most likely be whoever had committed the recent break-ins in the area and not been caught, having "got away". Or are you making the assumption that all assholes are black, or that all black people are assholes? Likely they were teenagers, possibly Martin's age. Maybe he hates teenagers?

As for what Zimmerman was thinking, can I borrow your crystal ball? That's an amazing skill you have there, have you considered taking your act on stage?

Usually your statement is right, dead is dead, wether you are black, white, green or blue. The reason race comes into this is because you have a police force that botched the investigation with a HISTORY of bad treatment of blacks, plus a over zealous Neighborhood Watch Captain who is basically profiling young teenagers down a street. Mind you, Paul Blart has no training in this nor is not a real cop, just plays one! Now add in that the cops let him go under 3 hours, and there you have it!!..

Well apparently you and Zimmerman need a crystal ball because he would not have known WHO broke into those homes in that area because Zimmerman did not catch them, nor see them..etc. His language did show that he had some type of negative feeling for whoever "they" are in ZImmerman's mind.

But then again, I guess assholes look alike!!.hahaha!

You are incorrect, read it AGAIN.

Pay careful attention to the first instance, in the highlighted section, of the word "and".

I have, in the past, had good and direct reason to study this law very carefully. I have put my understanding of it to numerous police officers, social workers, two attorneys, and an extremely biased domestic violence counselor. At one time I had parts of it laminated and posted on my front door, complete with the mug shot of my ex-wife's ex-husband with a bulls-eye superimposed. Several of them were unaware of the law itself, none of them challenged my understanding of it. Unlike several posters here, who while being apparently unaware of the law, chose to challenge my understanding of it.

She actually complained to an officer that I had "altered" his mug shot, which incidentally came from the state sex offender's web site. Talk about stunned incredulity.

My ex's claim of domestic violence was based on her saying that I was going to kill her ex-husband. The exact quote, repeated several times, was this :

"If that SOB, or anybody else, AGAIN, FOR A SECOND TIME, forcibly and illegally enters my home, and AGAIN, for a SECOND TIME, poses a clear threat to myself or any member of my family, IN MY OWN LIVING ROOM, (not necessary for the law), it will be my intention to slit his throat, crush his skull, or cut his "GOSH DARN" heart out. It is my understanding that the only question the police will have for ME is how I want the BODY disposed of. My instructions will be to have it rendered into DOG FOOD, in order to pay the cost of cleaning his BLOOD and BRAIN MATTER off my floor and walls."

Still ticks me off a bit, can you tell?

I know nothing of the Sanford Police Departments history.

I agree. At least it SEEMS that way.

I don't know who Paul Blart is - so I won't comment on that.

As to the police letting Zimmerman go.......hey, I live in Ohio. I have a concealed carry license. Ohio has a castle doctrine law.

If someone breaks into my house - and I fear for my life or the life/lives of my loved ones, and I plug the guy - after the cops come to take the report, I am fully aware that I will spend at least one night in jail until things get "sorted out." It really is that simple.

I am not a lawyer. I am a citizen of Ohio. I do not profess to know the laws in Florida. With that said, and with what I have read, Zimmerman did NOT abide with the "stand your ground" law. Anything and everything he did after not abiding that law can, and should be, used against him in the court of law. Not the court of public opinion - but the court of law.

Even if Trayvon had been guilty of something - which he wasn't - but even if he had been - stand your ground does NOT imply "follow suspect and kill"

The cops appear to have messed up. Their messing up does not bring Trayvon back to life - nothing will. But, justice should be served.....and, I have a feeling it will be.

So you are saying he should have POSITIVE feelings about people who robbed houses and got away? Interesting concept, but I don't happen to agree with it.

Are you assuming that the homeless person beaten by a cop, who was not charged, was black and that this one incident constitutes a History? First, how racist of you, and second, how fundamentally logically unsound.

I just heard Zimmerman referred to on radio as a "white hispanic". I've never heard this term before. I figure pretty soon he'll be just a "white guy".

I take this to mean he is of mixed ethnicity. I may be wrong.

According to Geraldo Rivera: (just a sample to illustrate)

trayvon-martins-hoodie-and-george-zimmerman-share-blame/

His hoodie killed Trayvon Martin as surely as George Zimmerman did.

Remember when my friend and colleague the estimable Juan Williams got fired from NPR for saying that Muslims formally garbed freaked him out at airports? Juan is among America's sharpest commentators. He wasn't justifying his reaction, he was copping to it. Maybe shock therapy or a semester of sensitivity training could change it, otherwise It is what it is.

No one black, brown or white can honestly tell me that seeing a kid of color with a hood pulled over his head doesn’t generate a certain reaction, sometimes scorn, often menace.

When you see that kid coming your way, unless you specifically recognize him you are thinking ghetto or ghetto wannabe high-style or low-brow wise-ass. Pedestrians cross the street to avoid black or brown hoodie wearers coming their way.

Because this is a teachable moment let me speak plainly.

Whatever Reverends Sharpton and Jackson say in Florida Friday, after listening to the 911 tapes and hearing the witness’ testimonials, I believe Trayvon Martin would be alive today but for his hoodie.

-------------------

Geraldo is saying that the manner in which he was dressed (hoodie up over his head) is just as guilty as Zimmerman because the hoodie helped to perpetuate a stereotype that meant: violent young black thug.

This is akin to saying that the short skirt a woman wears is just as guilty for her being raped as is the rapist because wearing short skirts means promiscuous slut.

Trayvon was murdered not for who he was rather for what he appeared to be to Zimmerman. His actions speak of a man who saw what he chose to see and reacted violently because that is who HE is, not because of who Trayvon is.

Nelson,
Maybe if you know what you were talking about:

For one thing, I don not assume anything:
http://www.wftv.com/news/news/family-slain-teen-hold-press-conference/nLTxw/

WFTV learned that the first Sanford officer in charge of the scene that Sunday night when Martin was killed was also involved in another controversial case.

In 2010, a Sanford police officer's son punched a man, but he was not arrested. Only after WFTV broke the story and asked questions was Justin Collison arrested.

WFTV learned that the patrol sergeant in charge the night of Collison's attack, Anthony Raimondo, was also the patrol sergeant who initially supervised Martin's shooting scene.

Raimondo has three validated complaints and another one pending.

OR this description of the incident:
7:59 PM – 03/20/2012
Report: Lead officer at scene of Martin incident had several complaints, was involved in controversial 2010 case.

A few days ago, WFTV in Orlando reported that Anthony Raimondo, the first officer in charge of the scene the night Trayvon Martin was killed, had three validated complaints during his career and another pending complaint.

He was also involved in another local controversy two years ago. In 2010, Justin Collison, the son of a local police officer, sucker punched a homeless man and broke his nose. Raimondo declined to arrest Collison, and no charges were pressed until WFTV picked up the YouTube video of the incident. Collison, who is white, is the son of a local police lieutenant and the grandson of a former Florida judge. Collison was later ordered to pay the man's medical bills and to donate money to several nonprofit groups.

Apparently, you and the Stanford Police dept have things in common.. you both do not know what your doing or talking about!

You stated there was a history, of mistreatment, of BLACK PEOPLE. There is NO MENTION of ANY SUCH THING in your post, the link, or anything else I have read, or heard.

A History, of Possible screw-ups, performed by at least one or two white people, is NOT a history of mistreatment of black people.

There is either a font or typestyle that I can't see, you are quoting something not referenced or linked anywhere, or you are simply unable to correctly comprehend the printed english language. It's a common problem, and one I might be able to help you with. It sometimes helps to sound out the words.

J/C...sorta

It's ridiculous these ghosts of racial lines continue to haunt us today. I really hope the man responsible for gunning down this young man gets charged for something. I'm not one for killing one man because he killed a young boy, though.

If you have another explanation for his statements compared to the listed information, I would be genuinely interested in hearing it.

You don't like the ghosts, inaccurate assumptions like these are one reason they are still around.

I am not saying this to be smarmy or condescending or rude, but if you are not in therapy, please seek it.

You are mentally ill.

Again, I mean that with sincerity, not as a dig. We all have problems. Seek help.

Loved this development on Geraldo. Just shows how stupid journalists can be sometimes.

I think he doesn't realize that the hoodie, while it may be seen as part of "Gangster" Culture, is also a part of all young people's culture. I own about 5 hooded sweatshirts. (And being 26 I still call myself in young culture). Heck, my regimental college that I go to graduate school at requires everyone buy a hooded sweatshirt (that has the college's name on it with your name stenciled on the back)

Kind of like the idea that may be I should stop wearing jeans because gangbangers wear jeans?

Good point on the girls with mini-skirts thing though. Whatever he was wearing doesn't change anything.

But the idea that a hoodie is somehow associated with being a thug is just ridiculous. Geraldo is quite out of touch with real society if that's what he thinks. Although, it could be the case (him being out of touch), Zimmerman might be just as out of touch with the regular world as Geraldo.

Either way, Zimmerman has gotta go. Hope he gets executed

Here's my thoughts.

I do think this was racially motivated based solely on Zimmerman profiling Trayvon solely on the basis of his skin. Traylon was deemed suspicious IMO because he happened to be black and there have been a string a robberies in the area committed by suspected black members of society. Even if Traylon was the responsible for the robberies, it still doesn't not give Zimmerman right to suspect him soley because he was black since he did not physically see Traylon doing anything illegal. It's not illegal to be walking down the street and even if it was in a gated community, it gives Zimmerman no right to accuse him of being somewhere he doesn't belong.

I think Zimmerman has a big hero complex and has the need to feel like he is a hero and has to act out on it, so he pretends and acts like the neighborhood police officer. He deputized himself as a neighborhood watchman on pretty much his own accord and was acting out his own hero fantasy.

I do not think he should have been patrolling out there on his own with a loaded gun to begin with. His action of doing so was begging for what happened to happen. It was only a matter of time before he ended up in some scuffle and unfortunately a seemingly innocent bystander got the blunt of the hurt. If he felt the need to patrol the neighbor, he should have stuck with just keeping his eyes open and alerting the police and let them do their job.

Also, those backing Traylon Martin along with his family have some issues as well. I've heard reports of them requesting an arrest, which I agree with but then they take it too far themselves. They are also requesting a conviction. They need to realize that our system does not work that way. I do think that Zimmerman should have been arrested and investigated further. I think he went beyond what Stand Your Own Ground was intended for. He sought his "attacker" and it wasn't a case where he was the supposed victim. Now whether or not he gets convicted or not, that is up to the courts to decide and to demand a conviction is foolhardy.

One thing I do see coming from this case is a rewrite of Florida's Stand Your Ground law. I do agree with it at face value, but not in its broad definition and that it should not allow a person to pursue the person who they feel is threatening them.

As for the "white hispanic," there is white of hispanic descent. A lot of hispanics do appear to look white as well as a lot do look darker. With a name like Zimmerman, I would be hard pressed to call him hispanic. From reports, his father was white and his mother is Peruvian. But being hispanic or white doesn't matter in terms of being "racist" against blacks, because you do not need to be white to be racist. You can be white, hispanic, asian and even black and be a racist.
