so, the Rockies are running out a guy who broke his neck last August and Jamie "my rookie year was the same as Will Clark's" Moyer, but Alex White and Drew Pomeranz can't break into it?
really thought they'd give Pomeranz the 5th slot, just surprised on it I guess

Yeah they definitely failed to improve the lineup and get a big bat.

Ozzie Guillen is really screwed right now. He poorly phrased a statement involving Fidel Castro and the Miami community is pissed.

I read something on cleveland.com that said the rockies didn't need a 5th starter until the 15th. I guess that's when Pomeranz will start.

ok, I figured since he didn't make the roster he wasn't in line to pitch. with all the weird scheduling early on that makes sense. thanks.

That's not true. Miami fans were ecstatic at the championship parade when they won their first title with Lebron. It's just they didn't show up for games after that.

Am I missing the sarcasm in that or something ......?

If you remember the night after the decision, they threw a giant party at AA arena, which looked more like a rock concert/wwe event. They went nuts, Lebron guaranteed more than 7 titles, and they followed that with poor attendance for such a star studded team all year.

Yeah, I get that part, I just don't get the sarcasm in the original poster's post.
If he'd said something like "Look at their attendance this year .... and after Lebron delivered the first of 5 or 6 or 7 Championships last year too .....", that I would have got.
Maybe I'm just not reading it right.

Carlos Santana to get multiyear deal
Associated Press
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians are building for their future up the middle.
One week after locking up their All-Star shortstop, the club has reached an agreement with catcher Carlos Santana on a multiyear contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday night.
Santana, who hit 27 homers in his first full season in 2011, is expected to sign his new contract on Tuesday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Indians have not yet announced the deal. Terms of the contract were not yet known.
On Sunday, Santana celebrated his 26th birthday by hitting two homers in a 4-3 win over Toronto. The Indians regard him as one of their core players and wanted to ensure they would have him beyond 2016, when they lose contractual control of the talented switch-hitter.
Last week, the Indians gave All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera a three-year contract that will keep him with the club through the 2014 season.
The two new contracts are about all that has gone right for the Indians in the early stages of the 2012 season. They dropped to 1-3 on Monday night with a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Cleveland is batting just .153 as a team and scored 14 runs.
Last season, Santana batted .239 with 35 doubles and 79 RBIs in 155 games. He was one of just four players to hit 25 homers with 35 doubles and 90 walks, joining Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Joey Votto.
Santana was acquired in a 2008 trade from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for third baseman Casey Blake.

Radio reports say they locked up Santana through 2017.

so we don't have to hear about arbitration negotations every winter and locked up at least 1 year beyond our team control. good news all around.

It is good news, but I love that Dolan supporters are going "SEE SEE, THEY SPEND GUYS!"
This deal was inevitable. It's nice that they got the extra year, but you just knew he as going to be there through 2016 anyway. It's kind of a non-story if you ask me.

people that use this deal to say that they spend are as short-sighted as the ones that complain we didn't get Carlos Pena (who signed for less money with TB)

bullpen hasn't been bad (just not dominant like last year and Perez is always an adventure). they have been used more than I would like to see them though.
the starters have been phenomenal so far though. couldn't have asked for a better opening 3day start against a good hitting Blue Jay team and Tomlin did what he does against the White Sox (gave up a couple HRs but they were solo shots and kept the score down).
the hitting just has been atrocious. if we can just get below average hitting instead of league worst, then we'll have a competitive team here.

I know it's early, but it's starting to look like 2 straight years of good pitching gone to waste.
They did nothing to make this lineup better when they knew it wasn't good enough to compete.
Some of these guys can and probably will do better, but a lot of these guys are just plain stiffs.

Well, I 'm ready to press the panic button just yet, but any time you have guys like Aaron Cunningham on your active roster there is reason for concern. We'll see...

I honestly don't have any idea, because I no longer follow baseball outside of the Tribe.
I understand the economics, and Prince Fielder just wasn't coming to Cleveland, but they literally sat on their hands again.
This lineup is awful, and even Dolan's biggest supporters can't deny that. It's a joke.
They put out a minor league product, therefore they are getting minor league crowds. Only problem is, they're ok with that, because for them, it's better for their bottom line versus spending money and trying to win and getting better crowds.

they also have one of the better pitching staffs.
they offered more money to Carlos Pena, but he wanted to go back to the Rays. they tried to offer money to Beltran but he refused to listen.
there weren't many hitters out there this offseason after the "splurge" guys. Willingham hasn't been any better than Hafner the past 3 years and he got a big deal (and I mean games played too).
I agree on it's frustrating to watch this team hit (I mean it'll be better than it has been, but it's not like we're even expecting top10 in the AL here).

Two moves by Acta annoyed me last night. One was playing Cunningham in CF instead of Brantley. Brantley needs to be an everyday player, especially with Sizemore on the DL, and Chris Sales is not exactly Randy Johnson. I think it was his first ever ML start. Second was playing Donald at 3B instead of Hannahan, who has been getting good swings in his AB's, and who hits lefties better than righties. I was glad to see Jose Lopez get a start and he did hit a HR. As time goes on, if the offense continues to struggle, I would not mind seeing Lopez get more AB's at 2B and letting Kipnis play LF, which is his original position. I know people will say that they would be messing with Kipnis' development if they did that, but I'd call BS on that. They're ballplayers, not hot-house orchids.

They offered Pena only $725k more than Tampa. IF you really wanted him in Cleveland, you would've had to offer at least 2-4 million more. Same with Beltran. I don't think they even matched St Louis offer. Since Cleveland is such an unattractive destination, you have to overpay by a lot to get your guy.. I would've in both cases.. It's not like Fielder where you're committing 200 million+ over 10 years. With all the money we wasted on Sizemore, Carmona, and even Kotchman, I would've made the serious push for those 2 players.. Just imagine if we had Pena at first, and Beltran in left field, or center?? Our lineup would be pretty formidable, to go along with the starting pitching.

Beltran wouldn't even talk with the Indians according to reports, so unless we told his agent soemthing crazy like "Jose Reyes $$$" we weren't getting his attention.
And, you are saying that a team with a ton of financial constraints as it is needs to go into the FA marketplace where players are already over-priced (due to team-control on early years, but FA is much, much higher per "winshare") and then go and pay 20-30% above and beyond that worth?

4-1 in the middle of the 3rd. I would like to think that the offense will steal this game to make up for how they treated Masterson his first time out, but I'm not feeling too good on that.

I just want to see a picture of the ballpark. They're saying there's about 500 people there. I wonder if I go down there and tell them that if they let me in for free I'll drop $20 on food and beer, would they do it?

if this season goes south early instead of late, then I wonder how long we'll have to wait before doing a "countdown to 2015" (which is when the lease is up and the team can leave - more likely, it's when the team would be sold by and then moved in 2018 after the 3year lease extension that is in the contract)

These guys have no plate discipline. Bases loaded, two on from walks. The pitcher has not thrown a stike the ENTIRE inning. Every strike was on a swing. Every pitch that a player didn't swing on was a ball. Ball to Santana, then swing on next pitch to ground out end the inning. Seriously. Do they have a manager?

I dunno. Because its lunchtime? Well, that and to see if they'd be willing to give up $5 to make $20 (or whatever amount they get from concession sales).
