Update: Trent Richardson impostor flirts with idea of playing for Browns

Someone posing as Alabama running back Trent Richardson has been using Twitter this week to make it seem as if the real draft prospect has been flirting with the possibility of playing for the Browns.

The account -- @trentrich03 -- has more than 16,000 followers, but is fake, according to Josh Maxson, an associate communications director for the University of Alabama's athletic department.

"It is not real," Maxson wrote in an e-mail to the Beacon Journal. "Trent does not have a Twitter (account) and isn't planning on getting one."

The tweets from the impostor have become topics of conversation on Cleveland sports talk radio and the blogosphere.

I was a victim of this prank, too, because I posted messages from the fake account on this blog earlier today. After some of my Twitter followers mentioned they thought it might be a fraud, I sought a definitive answer. I apologize to all of my readers for creating any confusion.

The real Richardson, a candidate to be picked fourth overall by the Browns on April 26, reportedly visited the team earlier this week.

Unless his account was confirmed people are stupid for falling for it.

There are several people who aren't verified, but I'm about 99% sure it's their account.

I have to say I feel for Richardson's fake account, though I didn't put a shred of stock into what he was saying.

I think it is genius and Hilarious.

The people that fell for it are the same people who willingly give out their social security number and bank account to the Nigerian lottery council who just emailed them saying "You have won a sum of $10,000,000 USD!!!"

Twitter not being allowed is a rule and it is one that I respect. That being said, don't blame the technology for being flawed, blame the users for not knowing how to use it.

It's like Bill Belly not letting his players use MyFace or the SpaceBook....

As I said, I fell for it, but I'm not really in a position to do much with it. If I'm a reporter and I'm going to maybe talk about it in my article, then, yeah, I'm going to check up to make sure it's real.

I know that Josh Cribbs's account isn't verified. Neither is TJ Ward's, Peter King's, Adam Schefter's or Jason LaCanfora's. But, those all seem legit.

And to be fair ... there are a lot of people today who are just lazy.

Someone on Twitter had created a fake Adam Schefter account about 2 weeks ago (roughly).

Instead of being spelled Adam Schefter ... it was spelled Aclam Schefter ... the first "D" being replaced by a lowercase "c" and "l." BUT a TON of people fell for it ... even the official ESPN account.

And for a few hours that night a whole bunch of people (me included) were in an uproar when a few ESPN personalities were retweeting and "reporting" news that the fake and unverified Aclam Schefter account were pointing out.

It's not that the technology is bad ... just know how to use it lol
