No it don't... Browns sign McKinney to 1-year deal Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 03.14.2007 The Browns have signed guard/center Seth McKinney to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday. McKinney (6-3, 310) appeared in 61 games with 34 starts as a Miami Dolphin from 2002-05. He missed the entire 2006 season after having surgery to repair a disk in his neck. McKinney attended Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, where he helped win a state championship in 1996 along with teammates Drew Brees, now quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, and Chris Mihm, a center for the Los Angeles Lakers. McKinney is expected to provide depth along the interior line. http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=6573

What kind of physical does it take for these guys to sign ?
After Bently`s freak injury...the mention of a guy coming in with a neck injury ...gets me a little concerned.........

Well, you have Baxter and LCB coming to us with perfect health records and well, you know what happened......so since we get the opposite luck, maybe him being banged up already means he'll be totally healthy for us.

Not much to get excited about. My guess is by the time the season starts we won't even remember this guy's name. Hopefull he can compete for a spot on the depth chart.

I just got off the phone with my brother in law who is a huge Dolphin fan. He says this guy is nothing to right home about. He couldn't play center so they moved him to guard where he wasn't much better.
Like I said it's here say from another fan just like us but take it for what it's worth. Sounds like just another signing for depth nothing special.

Hehe and I asked my Dolphins friend when McKinney visited CLE....he said he´s a decent C/G but injury prone....I like him as the 6th OLiner backing up C and maybe emergency G....a younger Friedman who´s career is on the line, so I guess he´ll give us 100%
another depth sign...we need a backup C...he´ll compete with Smith

Don't bet on it. I'm willing to bet that you're looking at our new right guard.
Note that this scouting report was BEFORE last year's injury:
Quote:
Grade: 73 | Key Alert: None
Comment: McKinney has adequate size and good upper body strength for the position. He has the versatility to play either guard or center but seems to have found a home at the center position. He has very good agility and running ability as an offensive lineman. He takes a good position step and has a good feel for taking angles to his blocks. He has a good understanding of blocking schemes and plays with good intelligence making all the line calls and adjustments up front. He plays with good bent knees, has good balance, and plays with a good base. He is rarely off his feet. He does an outstanding job of picking up and passing on line stunts and twists in the middle of the line. He shows that he has the speed to pull and lead the toss play and is effective at finding and blocking a moving target. He plays with a high level of energy and works hard to finish his blocks. He shows good toughness and durability is not an issue with him. While he has adequate strength, he can improve both his upper and lower body strength and be better able to get movement on the line of scrimmage. He can be knocked back at times by a strong bull rush but has greatly improved his ability to handle the defender who lines up on his nose. Overall he is a very good competitor who doesn't make many mistakes.
He was the #1 linemen left that I wanted. I'm still big on Timmerman, but McKinney was the guy I was after in the "2nd tier" category.

That sounds like the same thing that would happen if you asked two people on this board about one of our players. One guy would say he sucks and the other would call him a decent player. Everyone has an opinion. Too bad some of them are wrong

What is interesting is the pulling guard aspect of the review.
I think we are spotting a trend. Mobile OL are preferred over road graders.
Welcome back, Joe, we missed you!

Especially with the Defenses and one down players.....
I remeber in the old days when everyone played the whole game....nose to nose....that was road graders....

"Overall he is a very good competitor who doesn't make many mistakes"
Overall sounds like a 2nd Fraley....hey and a 73 rating makes him the our 2nd best FA signing according to this scouting group, right?
I totally forgot about him eying the DLiners Smith....but I remember when he visited a week ago I wanted him over Mahan (more of a sleeper sign since he´s coming off injury and cheaper of course)
I also was pimping Timmerman...he´s the better G but doesn´t offer McKinney´s versatility...you never know if a stop gap like Timmerman gives 100% or just plays for his last mil....for McKinney there still is something to play for
Is he our RG? Maybe....for now....and look for Andruzzi getting cut (after we picked up a 2nd to 4th round G)
and yeah....we are moving to an athletic OL for sure

McKinney better not be starting - he's a guy that is a good backup, and might be a decent starter on a better o-line, but overall, he's nothing to write home about. I remember seeing an ESPN clip when he was with Miami and the DT simply bowled him over to get to Harrington.
This signing reminds me of Kelly Butler's last year - a guy with starting experience who we are signing to be a backup.

Okay so lets take a look at weight on our OL, I think the road grader trend is out the door
Sowells 324 Druzzi 315 Matua 305 Fraley 300 Steinbach 298 Mc Kinney 310 Smith 306 Is it just me, that our OL seems light compared to the rest of the league except for DEN. I thought a smash mouth football team need to have more weight in their arse. I tend to believe we will see more speed on the OL as well.

I don't have a problem with picking a QB.
I do have a problem if it's Lerner picking the QB, however.

I think Phil signed him because of his versatility where he can fill in both at center and at guard positions. If we are lucky enough to position ourselves into a position of drafting Ben Grubbs, G, in the draft by making a trade; then Seth will be a valuable back-up with experience. JMHO

I freakin' hope so. The only problem here? The contradictions that are Tucker and Shaffer.
Neither guy is very mobile, Shaffer an absolute plodder as a left tackle. He's just a tick faster than LJ Shelton and Leonard Davis (which isn't a compliment ).
Now if I were the kind of guy that was known to severely spin things to suit an agenda, I'd suggest that we've now signed a couple of guards who are more in the "mobile" area of the talent pool, so this definitely means we're taking Joe "4.92 in the 40" Thomas with the first pick.

Well, I'd reemphasize that I'd stated this scouting report was prior to last year In that report, it says durablity isn't an issue.........that'd be a helluva strange thing to say about a guy when he missed the entire year with a neck injury

Throwing the penalty flag on that one.
McKinney missed the 2006 season. He couldn't have missed a block that got Harrington killed.

Weren't we looking at this guy last year after LCB went down and the whole village was playing Center?
Then we got wind of his neck problem?

What I like is that going into camp. there will be some depth to choose from. I want thomas at #3 and a Gaurd in the second. If this happens, we could very well have a good and young Oline with quality backups.
