You know what the NBA should do to avoid tanking?

Have an NIT style tournament, maybe just single elimination, and the winner gets #1 pick, and then everyone else gets slotted according to record. That way Charlotte doesn't get the first pick but would be guaranteed no worse than 2nd.

and then teams are tanking for the #2 pick instead of the #1 pick. in basketball especially where 1 or 2 players can make a HUGE difference, there really is little way to avoid tanking without killing the teams that are just bad (giving them very little hope to get better)

i guess you could setup the DLeague to have better teams/players and have the bottom few teams relegated to Dleague like they do in Euroleague, but I think that's silly.

Honestly, I kind of love tanking. It makes the end of the season for crappy teams entertaining. I think we should encourage it and get rid of the lottery. Teams could start tanking from day one.

I still like my idea of a tournament with all the lottery teams. They could do it consecutive weeks on Sunday mornings like a rec league. It'd be hilarious. I'd watch.

How about this:

Winner of the NIT NBA tournament gets overall number 1. Runner up gets number 2. 3 and 4 are decided by the worse record of the final four runners up.

Washington and Charlotte get first round byes.

then we end up in the situation nearly every year where the Chicago "no-Rose" and Orlando "no-Penny" teams that barely missed the playoffs end up getting that superstar and the worst teams are out of the running before the season even starts.

or even worse, you end up with the Knicks, 76ers, Suns, and Jazz all tanking out of the playoffs because they know they have a good shot at Anthony Davis if they do.

imagine being a King or Bobcat fan (or Cavs fan for that matter) and know that your team has no shot at the best player in the draft despite being one of the worst teams. that is what such a system does.

hope drives attendance and viewing of the bad teams. less hope = less fans

I don't think you are ever going to come up with a fair way to do this because it really requires the teams to play with integrity and try to win meaningless games at the end..

well, if we lose out we tie with them. not sure what the tiebreakers are with Sac and NO for the lottery (i do remember that it's different than the playoff tiebreakers)

I think the NBA tie-breaker is simply a coin toss. Or some sort of pre-lottery type drawing to determine the order in the event of a three-way/4-way tie.

I would actually love that idea ... really punish the terrible teams, and then the season becomes fun for the really bad teams. (Will Sacramento win out this last week of the season and avoid relegation??? Stay tuned!). But then the problem becomes, what do you do with the three or so teams that get promoted? Where do they fall in the draft order?

The other problem with the NBA isn't so much the way teams tank to get ping pong balls, the real problem remains free agency and players colluding to go play with their buddies in bigger markets... I'm not sure how you can fix that either since 1 or 2 guys can literally make or break an NBA team unlike other sports...

You KNOW he'll be in the same seat in a few weeks (right, they do the lottery near the end of the first round?).

I know it sucks guys, but this really is for the best.

Just look at how great Kyrie is and we have a chance to add another franchise changer.

somebody named kennedy is our new lester hudson. Welcome to your fifteen minutes, Mr. Kennedy!

Still bummed we beat Washington last time. We'd be tied for second right now had we properly tanked that game.

In the event that teams finish with the same record, each tied team receives the average of the total number of combinations for the positions that they occupy. In 2007, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Portland Trail Blazers tied for the sixth worst record. The average of the 6th and 7th positions in the lottery was taken, resulting in each team getting 53 combinations (the average of 63 and 43). Should the average number not be an integer, a coin flip is then used to determine which team or teams receive the extra combination(s). The result of the coin flip is also used to determine who receives the earlier pick in the event that neither of the tied teams wins one of the first three picks via the lottery.

If there's a 3 way tie for 3rd each team will end up with 121 chances, as opposed to the 156 #3 would usually get...

Ugh I hate revisionist history...

People selected after(and before) the Cavaliers picked Luke Jackson 10th in the 2004 NBA Draft (The year after we got LeBron)

7 Luol Deng SF
9 Andre Iguodala G/F
10 LUKE FRICKEN JACKSON SF
11 Andris Biedris F/C
15 Al Jefferson PF
17 Josh Smith SF
18 J. R. Smith SG
19 Dorell Wright SF
20 Jameer Nelson PG
24 Delonte West PG
25 Tony Allen SG
26 Kevin Martin SG
27 Sasa Vujacic SG
28 Beno Udrih PG

Editors Note: Even Better, 2002 we took Dajuan FREAKING Wagner at 6 with Amare Stoudamire going 9th...

Tied teams get an equal number of combinations in the draft lottery.

i just found this too

In the event of a tie, a simple tiebreaker (usually a coin flip) is performed to determine which team gets the better position. The combinations for the spots in question are split evenly among the tied teams with any extra pick given to the winner of the tiebreaker.

Yep, was just about to post something similar. So we get a 10.4-ish% chance of winning the lottery, just like Sacramento ... and in the event neither of us land in the top 3, we'd have a coin-flip to determine who picks before the other. Actually, the coin-flip will happen anyway, to figure out the 2nd round picking order. So now we have "two" lotteries to win.

oops, should have read ahead.

anyways, feeling moderately good about the Cavs drafting Anthony Davis, MKG, or Beal at this point (top4 pick should be good enough to land one of them).

but, I keep having this fear that they'll find a 28yo prospect who spent a few years in Europe and came back and put up good numbers in a silly offensive system instead.

New Orleans is awesome. They're up 10 at the start of the fourth quarter and score 6 total points in the fourth, making only 1 bucket. That is some quality tanking, right there. At least we had the decency to be blown out from start to finish.

Jamison likely to have new team next season

--F Antawn Jamison has played his final game with the Cavs. Some thought there was a chance he'd return next season, but he closed the door on that thinking after the final home game on April 25. "I thank the organization," he said. "I enjoyed playing for Mr. (Dan) Gilbert, the training staff and the coaching staff. It was fun. I've enjoyed it. I think we both have (made up our mind). It's time for me to move on. I don't know what the future holds. I have a good feeling this is my last (game with the Cavs), in general. I think (the writing is) on the wall. I wish these guys great luck." He'll be an unrestricted free agent after this season and he wants to play for a contender next year. "The only thing left for me to do is have my last name associated with a champion," he said.

The absolute worst that could happen is that we pick 7th. We will get a really good player in the draft.

1. Anthony Davis
2. MKG
3. Bradley Beal
4. Andre Drummond
5. Thomas Robinson
6. Jeremy Lamb
7. Harrison Barnes

pick 1 .137
pick 2 .142
pick 3 .145
pick 4 .085
pick 5 .323^
pick 6 .156
pick 7 .013

Cleveland won the coin toss today for the # 3 slot (over New Orleans).

Worst case is now #6 and something like a 96% chance of a top 5 selection.
