Not sure if this was posted anywhere ? I like it though. With the draft a week away, the question of whether and to what extent NFL Network and ESPN will create a true “and the winner is . . . ” moment for the 32 selections in round one has emerged, with unprecedented strength. NFLN draft host Rich Eisen joined The Dan Patrick Show on Thursday to discuss the league’s move toward blocking the networks from televising images of players at Radio City Music Hall talking on the phone. It may go even farther than dropping camera shots that drop hints. “It’s possible that we’ll go even further and ban our information men from saying ‘I’m hearing this is what the pick is,’” Eisen said. He also added that the staff in the production truck knows the pick, since they have to get graphics ready to show once the player’s name is announced. Per Eisen, the folks at NFL Network are told the pick; anyone who watches ESPN’s coverage knows that Chris Berman knows the picks. And that he has no qualms about stepping on the Commissioner’s thunder. “The first-round process has been cannibalized by television,” Eisen said. “And the teams, by the way. A lot of teams what their Twitter accounts to be beefed up. So as soon as they’re making the pick . . . a lot of teams have been tweeting it out. So the teams need to rein it in a little bit, too. That’s the next part of this process.” The real question, as Dan pointed out, is whether the draft is a TV show or a news show. If it’s a TV show, then the people involved in producing it need to help perpetuate the mystery. And if it’s a news show, then ABC needs to assign a crew of reporters to the Oscars in the hopes of letting us know ahead of time what’s on the card inside the envelope. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...rting-on-picks/

They should tell the teams not to contact the player on draft day until they pick him.

Or let the player hear it for the first time from Goodell's announcement.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Thats what I mean, teams should not be allowed to contact players from 12:01am Thursday until the end of the draft until the selection is made and announced. It would add some drama with the players listening intently to the announcements instead of talking on their phones.

I do kinda like seeing the players reactions ... Tape it, show it after the pick is made.

I agree. It's all about whoever's broadcasting it. They can keep the suspense for the viewers by not letting us know who's picked til it's announced at the podium. THEN they can show us the player getting the call and all that.

Hold the information the 12 seconds it takes to hand the card to Roger and wait for his announcement on stage. Does ESPN always have to scoop EVERY story?

Personally, I don't care. We all want to know ASAP ....... but if the teams don't want us to know, either don't invite the players, or don't call them in advance of their selection. Simple solution to a simple, and really non-existent, problem.

They are also forgetting agents that are Twitting picks as teams call them. I do like the idea of how it used to be with not knowing until the commish told the whole world. Sorry, it is the old fashion in me coming out. I used to have draft parties with everyone doing their own 1 round mock with money paid into a pot. Guy with the most picks right (guy in that slot not the trades) won the money and it was loud with everyone talking until we heard, "the pick is in" and everyone was on the edge of their seats to hear who it was. Sorry, but seeing the player or hearing it from someone at the NFL Network or ESPN didn't carry the same weight.
Also miss the draft being on a weekend instead of the way it is now. We would grill/smoke and drink beer all day and debate picks. If I still did this I would have love to invite Fl Dawg as he lives close and I would love to see if he could have taken the pot.

I like the Thursday night 1st round.
I work weekends, so at least I can watch the first round after work now.

Ya, I do also but would make sure I had this weekend off at work months in advance and my bosses laughed calling it a holiday for me.

See, I like the draft, but it's not worth missing work for, in my opinion. Especially because I take off work for March Madness the month before, so I can't really do both

I am happy they are doing this. I like seeing the emotion from the player but let Goodell announce the pick and then they can show the kid getting the call from the coach and his initial reaction from a few minuets earlier.

j/c good I'm glad. I don't like all of the leaks happening before the pick and it does ruin Goodell's thunder and makes the commentators look unjustly intelligent.

I think the players need to relish the opportunity when they are sliding down the boards. They could easily get themselves an endorsement deal.
Write on a sign: "Wanna Get Away" - Southwest "Gonna Be Awhile?" - Snickers
Or have a pizza delivered from Dominos, Pizza Hut, or Papa Johns (find out who the official NFL pizza is first to not get in trouble).
You could talk on your phone and have an advertisement for unlimited minutes from a carrier.
I mean, have fun with it. And, when the talking heads lambast you afterwards, just tell them that you are going to work hard and make everyone regret not taking you, but at the time the choice was to either sit there uncomfortably or enjoy the process.

There's 26 people invited this year, so the whole "Last guy in the green room" thing is null and void...
Mark Herzlich was invited last year and didn't even get drafted...
The point is, When Suzy Colbert is interviewing Ben Rothlisberger about how Eli and Rivers have gone and he's waiting his turn, and he gets a call from Cowher, it kind of defeats the purpose of the Draft spectacle completely..
Might as well hold the draft privately and post the results online afterwards...
Side Note: I DO enjoy the cuts to players at home draft parties when they get selected and the room goes crazy for them.
Just keep them after the pick is announced.

I love the new draft format. That All day Saturday and Sunday got old.
Thursday, 3 hours. Friday, 3 hours Saturday, 3-4 hours.
Perfect.
Plus, this allows teams a breather to discuss some trade options....I like that. I think a lot of potential trades died on the vine because there just wasn't time to think about it long enough.

My lady friend at the time used to HATE draft weekends...
I apparently "Made her" watch the entire draft in 2007 or something...
Ironically we broke up in 2008....
Hmmmm... Can I blame Brady Quinn for this?

I agree... it takes away from the excitment I think... in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but if they want to make it more of a TV show then this is a great idea.

That's almost exactly how I feel too.
Just to put everyone aside, it would be really cool. In the Iraq goverment changeover they just came out and said oops it happened yesterday. Back in the early 1980's they had the draft like on a tuesday night at 3 am.
It would be super cool if they just had it on a Tuesday morning at 3-11 am and came out and said oops Y'all missed it, here's your teams picks. It wouldn't change the picks just all the hype.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

changing it to thurday /friday/saturday did for sure ruin many many a draft party tradition for day 1.
That being something that will probably not change at this point, I do wish they would at least start Friday instead of thurday for day one. that way some of us could still have adult beverage parties for the top of the draft. Just drop Thur & add Sunday again.

I couldn't agree more Roc. I have to get up at 4:45 am myself on Friday Morning.

Ballpeen, I liked the old format better for the Browns Backers club here. Had good turnout and participation in the old format. But the new way takes a bunch of time from a number of days. Just pick winners! I am already getting crazy over football. Too early. Here we go, Brownies, here we go!

I agree, I like the new format.. 8 hours on Saturday or whatever it was, was just too much. Your team would have 4 or 5 picks so unless you were really interested in who the Seahawks and Lions selected, you had maybe 45 decent minutes of your team picking and you had to watch for 8 hours to see it... so then you watch your pick, estimate it will be 2 hours before you pick again so you go do something.. then your team trades up and you miss a pick. And I'll be honest, you get into Sunday, 5th and 6th round players I've never heard of.. I'm not all that interested, I'll read about who they selected but it's not like I have a big preference on who we take in the 6th round. I can give up a Thursday evening and Friday evening a heck of a lot easier than I can give up an entire Saturday.

I liked the old format better before, but now that I coach my kid's Little League team, I am happy to only have the later rounds conflict with their games.

This new format is brilliant from the perspective of the NFL, marketing the NFL, and getting huge ratings. The only other guy smart enough to pull off a move like this would be Vince McMahon

NFL reminds teams not to leak picks before podium announcement Posted by Josh Alper on April 24, 2012, 2:13 PM EDT On the heels of the announcement that there will no longer be camera shots of players on the phone with teams in the green room just before they are picked and hints that analysts on the networks covering the event will not report picks before they are announced comes word that the league is reminding teams to keep the wraps on things. Darren Rovell of CNBC reports that the league recently reminded teams to withhold announcements of their picks via any medium before they are officially made on the stage at Radio City Music Hall. The Colts obviously didn’t get the memo. It’s become a trend in recent years for teams to leak their picks out on Twitter before they get officially announced on telecasts. The league obviously wants to keep people watching the draft as opposed to simply following it via other modes of communication. Last week, Rich Eisen of the NFL Network said that the teams have to be part of that in addition to the networks. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...m-announcement/

I think it's pretty cool that they will allow the fans to be surprised when Goodell announces the pick. I wouldn't have much of a problem with it anyways, but it's still pretty cool.
How far down does it go though. There are so many reporters and wanna-be reporters nowadays?
