good, hope it´s not more than 8mil SB but probably more since he had the leverage on us....I expect us to overpay a bit but it´s necessary....he´s the only McKinley upgrade out there and since Roye isn´t getting any younger Robaire was a must sign...still need to draft a DE

Oh, I believe it, but the bottom line is there needs to be some proof for this topic to stay around.

Getting to the actual signing, it will all depend on how much we overpaid him. I don't mind overpaying for Robaire, but the terms of the contract will tell me how good of a negotiator Savage is.

Robaire Smith-DL-Browns Mar. 14 - 10:30 pm et

Browns signed DE Robaire Smith to a four-year contract.

Smith, who played defensive tackle in Tennessee last year, will kick outside in Cleveland's 3-4, where he'll likely be part of a rotation with Orpheus Roye, Simon Fraser, and possibly Orien Harris. He accumulated 77 stops and four sacks at end in Dom Capers' 3-4 from 2004-2005 with Houston.

Great signing. This just might be the best off-season we have had yet. If Bentley hadn't of went down last year I would have to disagree with myself.

Wish we could have got a better corner but with all the holes we are filling in FA one in the 2nd round of the draft might not be too far off.

has anybody seen him play? I´m concerned since TEN had 1 of the worst run defenses last year, at least they reportedly wanted him back...any in depth info on Robaire?

Week-end we have our new NT??? That would be good news, but, also it could mean the retirement of Ted Washington. JMHO.

Phil is doing everything in his power to help RAC stay in Cleveland. If Shaun Smith does sign, we still need in MHO that big cover corner and I'm not too high on Andra Davis as an impact leader of our LB corps. I hope as the DL strengthens and lets keep our fingers cross re our bad luck with injury bug, that his presence will be a more domineering one. JMHO

I don't think you have to fear that, I believe Leon took care of that situation. I remember him making the calls while filling in for Davis. Not bad for a rookie.

I personally think Davis wouldn't start for many teams, and is part of the reason our run defense sucked. He is praised on these boards, but when I watch the games IMO he has little impact.

Comment:
Smith has good size, strength and versatile. He can play end or tackle and has played in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes. He is hard-nosed, durable and experienced. He is tough and competitive. He has good play recognition and understands his assignments. He can lock out and control the point of attack against the run. He can penetrate and is an active attacking upfield gaps. He can move laterally down the line and get over trash in the box. He is best suited to playing in a confined area against the run but shows good effort in pursuit. He can create a pass-rush surge to push the inside pocket. But Smith lacks ideal quickness and closing speed. He is upright off the ball and needs to play with better pad level at the point of contact. He has limited pass-rush countermoves and doesn't finish well. He lacks good lateral quickness off stunts to get on the edge of linemen.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds to me like he's a better fit for the 3-4 than the 4-3.

OK, the Browns filled a real position of need for 2007. But Robaire will be 30 in November. They still need to address the DL in this and coming drafts so the pipeline of quality players continues to be filled.

But for now, good move Phil. The DL is better today than it was yesterday. And on Friday, I hope to say it's better still.

Good signing. Should have Shaun on Friday. Nice upgrades on the DL considering who's been available this FA.

That whole thing about stunts shouldn't matter since we never do it anyway.

These two comments are great to hear.

They are the two things our Dline doesn,t do.

I get sick of seeing both our Oline and Dline being pushed backwards at the snap of the ball. Hopefully with Robaire and the other Smith in rotation with Ted, this will end that happening.

Now get another DE in the draft and things should improve
