How can you be disappointed getting more head ....sorry had to do it.

Really though, I nothing about Moorehead, got any info?

I for one would love more head.

You really need to watch South Park when it re-airs at midnight

I watched it and it was funny but last weeks was one of the best I've seen in a long time. LOL

OK, the Browns filled a real position of need for 2007. But Robaire will be 30 in November. They still need to address the DL in this and coming drafts so the pipeline of quality players continues to be filled.

But for now, good move Phil. The DL is better today than it was yesterday. And on Friday, I hope to say it's better still.

That's about how I feel about it. Another stopgap player who's here so we can draft/develope someone. He's an upgrade over McKinley and he's been damned durable. Don't buy too much into his pass-rush stuff, as he doesn't own any moves, hehe. He's a run-stuffing DT who's played some run-stuffing DE in the 3-4. All things considered, it was important to land this guy, as there weren't hardly any other options left.

My opinion of Savage's offseason just went up today.

We pretty much HAD to sign this guy. Who else is there, honestly. Our DL is very thin, but just got a bit thicker after Smith signed tonight.

This is a great signing. I would be surprised if we sign one more D-lineman in Free Agency or draft one. This is a good signing. I like what I have been seeing in free agency. I hope we find a corner soon.

I don't know, man...I'm just not too excited about this one. I look at some of the great 3-4s around the league and I see a lot of day-one picks, if not first rounders. Hell, England has 3 first rounders on their D Line. It's amazing what 3 great DLinemen can do for an aging linebacking corp.

I'm just not feeling it with this guy. I feel like it's going to be more of the same.

I suppose that's understandable, especially if one doesn't know much about the guy.

Consider that McKinley was a never-was who was playing out of position in the 3-4, and that Roye, while competent, was allready on the downside of his career.

Smith is a known quantity who is still young enough to have a couple of seasons in his tank.

Aaron Smith and Brett Keisel of the Steelers are pretty good. Smith a 4th rounder and Keisel a 7th.

Marques Douglas who's now with the Niners via free agency was an undrafted free agent by the Ravens.

Yes, some players were taken in the 1st round, some not. At this point in their career's, it's far better to know what a player is than to look back at where he was drafted.

What we know about 3-4 DE's is that their primary responsibility is to eat two blockers and not give up ground. That's something that Smith does rather well. In that regard, he's an adequate player who's only downside is his age.

He's no pro-bowler, but in this defense, he doesn't have to be.

Doesn't stop us from drafting a DE day 1, (this draft is loaded with them and would be surprised if we didn't come away with one at some point,) IMO his FA selections in general this year put Phil in a better position to be able draft BPA in every round. And he's definitely an upgrade over McKinley.

Didn't we try that before and it failed?

We only get so many #1 picks. I know FA isn't the best way to build a team but it can help. I don't think anyone will contend that this isn't an improvment from last year. And that is all we can ask for...improve at as many positions as possible and draft BPA...we will get better fast!!!

"Figuring to draft an offensive player with the third pick in the draft, the Browns helped their defense Wednesday night by reaching a four-year, $12 million deal with Titans defensive tackle Robaire Smith.
Smith, 30, received a $4 million signing bonus and will be paid a total of $5 million in the first year of the contract. Over the first two years, he will make $7 million"

Wow, that´s pretty cheap overall....just 4mil SB over 4 years. That´s what about he´s worth but considering the market with the new cap and being thin at DL, this is a pretty good deal...

Sounds good,,, he's a good quality guy,.. does he fit,,, time will tell..

Sorry, can't get as excited him as I did about Stienbach... Big difference in the level of talent there. But I'm not unhappy at all.

That would be good news, but, also it could mean the retirement of Ted Washington. JMHO.

Getting a starting NT won't automatically mean The State Of Washington will retire but it should put him on the bench ..to come in on short yardage and to spell the starter not the other way around.
Ted should only see about 10-20 plays a game..

I know Big Ted can take up two blockers.. i'm hoping Smith can demand two blockers as well... that would leave Roye taking up one guy, with Wimbley coming off the edge for the sack!!

and imagine if Quentin Moses was coming off the other side

Nice upgrade.

Smith isn't all-pro quality, but he is NFL quality. He plays solid and makes the plays he is supposed to make. He also plays alot of downs....all at the same level.

I agree, he is indeed a stop gap....but he still has enough gas to play out his contract. We won't be forced to replace him for 4 years unless we elect to do so, so we have the time to find a replacement via the draft....and it doesn't have to be this year.

If we get the kid from Cincy tomorrow, the line is pretty much set for this year. The only other position on D that needs upgrade is at corner. I am now beginning to think we are going to be open to selecting a corner early in the draft process.

If we trade down in round one, corner might be our pick..Hall possibly.....if not, round 2 will still offer some good prospects that can step in.

If you are looking for immediate impact, corners offer that. It is a position where either you have it by this point or you don't. There isn't alot you can teach a kid to make him that much better. Either you can cover or you can't.

This is a need signing, and makes it so we can draft D-linemen a little later. Thank the lord I won't have to see Mckinley anymore.

this is the biggest move of the three yesterday. I'm nervous as to why it's not on the official website like the other two are.?

absolutely love this signing by the way. HUGE need.

Just clicking.

I don't know anything about Robaire other than what's been written in this thread, but since everyone's happy about this signing, I am too!

I do know we had to upgrade the DL, and free agency helps. Still probably have to draft one, though, IMO. But at least it's not as urgent as it was before signing Smith.

man, i just got done listening to the Phil radio post. There is no signature yet

I really hope this signing does not fall throught.

Didn't we have some guy agreed to terms last year but he bailed at the last minute?

Kalimba Edwards came in , they had the contract there for him..he left ,went home, Phil was expecting him to sign..Edwards talked to his dad WHO CONVINCED him to stay in Detroit..that move made Rac push for Wimbley, not Ngata.

This is a need signing,

All FA signings are "need" signings.

What we did in FA isn't going to alter much in the draft....drafting is more about drafting the best player and less about needs.

Good signing. Progress is being made on both sides of the ball. RAC is getting the benefit of these upgrades let's hope he improves himself as a HC as well.

Browns sign Titans DL Robaire Smith
Posted by Tony Grossi March 15, 2007 12:56PM

The Browns have reached a four-year contract agreement with veteran defensive lineman Robaire Smith. The $12 million deal includes a $4 million signing bonus, according to ESPN. com.

Smith, 29, played five of his seven NFL seasons with Tennessee. The other two were spent with the Houston Texans, and in 2004 his position coach was Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.

Smith's best two seasons were at right end in Houston's 3-4 defense. In Cleveland, he will replace Alvin McKinley, who is a free agent and not expected to return.

Smith, 6-4 and 310 pounds, is the third defensive player signed in free agency by the Browns this year, and all three have a past association with Grantham. The others are outside linebacker Antwan Peek and cornerback Kenny Wright.

Just clicking...solid 3-4 DE

Not a superstar but then 3-4 DE there really aren't any...even Seymour the stud he is doesn't eek stats. Its a grunt position and Robaire is a GRUNT

We just upgraded our running game tremendously...this will also help our LBs.

Very nice.

Savage has made some excellent pickups this FA period. We have improved so much this off season. I can't wait for the draft.

I know you mean our run defense. We still need to find someone to replace Roye and depth is still a big issue.

I think he was referring to Steinbacch and Robaire. Steiny is the only one we signed that qualifies as a tremendous upgrade.

Now that we've signed Robaire Smith, I wouldn't mind bringing Alvin McKinley in as a backup at the right price. I loved the guy before he was a starter - lots of enthusiasm and energy (although that admittedly was in the 4-3). I think Alvin's a guy that wears down quickly, and therefore, would a good player to give one of the starters a blow.

And of course I had him on our team on Madden already. Right now I'm 3 out of 4 on free agents.
